The biogeographic contributions of Léon Croizat (1894–1982) and the conflictive relationships with his intellectual descendants and critics are analysed. Croizat’s panbiogeography assumed that vicariance is the most important biogeographic process and that dispersal does not contribute to biogeographic patterns. Dispersalist biogeographers criticized or avoided mentioning panbiogeography, especially in the context of the “hardening” of the Modern Synthesis. Researchers at the American Museum of Natural History associated panbiogeography with Hennig’s phylogenetic systematics, creating cladistic biogeography. On the other hand, a group of (...) New Zealand biologists formalized Croizat’s original concepts and soon began arguing with cladistic biogeographers over the relative merits of their approaches. In Latin America, panbiogeography and cladistic biogeography were incorporated as parts of an integrative approach. A recent development, molecular panbiogeography, is based on the use of molecular phylogenetic data. The current practice shows that some authors insist on considering panbiogeography as the only appropriate approach and vicariance as the only relevant process, whereas others accept Croizat’s dictum “Earth and life evolve together” as a useful guide to understanding broad, general patterns, but recognize that dispersal also contributes substantially to biotic assembly. The framework of integrative pluralism allows to explain the complexities of the biogeographic processes involved in biotic assembly without the need of unification on a large scale. This historical analysis intersects with the existing historiography of the Modern Synthesis and may provide some insights on the dynamics of integrative pluralism, which may be especially relevant in the current development of the Extended Synthesis. A partir de nuestra interpretación de la obra de Simone Weil proponemos dos líneas de lectura para entender su concepción de la identidad individual: primero, mostramos que para la filósofa el hombre construye, a través de su trabajo, la imagen de sí mismo que él busca ser. Mostraremos que esta búsqueda está habitada por un problema fundamental: la repetición de un mecanismo ligado al deseo de expansión del yo, en el que apenas se alcanza el instante de contacto con la (...) imagen proyectada, esta se ve remodelada y vuelta a lanzar al horizonte inalcanzable del deseo. Así, veremos en segundo lugar que en oposición a ese camino de construcción de la identidad que emana de la labor, aparece en la última época weiliana una búsqueda de destrucción del impulso de identificación, que implica una disciplina consciente de control de la expansión del yo y del deseo de poder que le es inherente. From our interpretation of Simone Weil's works, we propose two lecture lines to understand her conception of individual identity: first, we show that, according to Weil, man builds, through his work, the image of himself that he attempts to be. We will show that, behind this search, there is a structural problem: the repetition of an mechanism related to the self's desire of expansion, where, as soon as the instant of contact with the projected image is reached, this image is remodeled and launched forward until the unreachable horizon of desire. And secondly, we will see that in opposition to this path of identity's construction which arises from work, in the last weilian period it appears a search of destruction of the identification momentum, that implies a conscious discipline of control of the self's expansion and the desire of power which is related. The radical Islamist regime of the Taliban affords an extensive view of the logic of Muslim fundamentalism regarding the public and private spheres. I argue that the Taliban de-privatized several life-spheres, "publicizing" religion and the body. The Taliban performed power as public spectacle, employing public executions, amputations and whippings. Religion, too, was to be completely public, as Habermas argues it was in Europe before the 18th century. As soon as they took Kabul, the Taliban insisted that all residents had (...) to say their five daily prayers, the men in mosques. Likewise, men were given six weeks to grow out their beards to a hand's length and to trim their moustaches in accordance with a literal reading of sayings about the Prophet Muhammad's appearance. The young female memoirist of life in Taliban Kabul, Latifa, reported that her middle class father complied with the new rule, but insisted, "My beard belongs to the Taliban, not to me!" The rendering public of religion made public property of every religious act. His body had a choice, of being conformed to the movements and shaping of religion, or of being tortured because of lack of compliance. This publicization of the believer's body resulted in an alienation from individuals of parts of themselves. Likewise, the gendered character of the public and private spheres, with women being confined to the private, is as visible in Taliban thinking as it is in Hegel. The expansion of the public realm of religion and morality by the Taliban had the effect of shrinking the private sphere and so constraining women further. Girls' schools were shuttered and many war widows were reduced to begging and risking sanctions for being in the street without a male guardian. Posters of Bollywood actresses were forbidden, and Kate Winslet was condemned to death in absentia for portraying a fornicator in The Titanic. It is argued that the goal of perfectly privatizing the female body lay behind these Draconian measures. (shrink)

Los versos 990-1008 de Suplicantes de Eurípides constituyen un verdadero locus desperatus: allí Evadne se presenta sobre la escena y expresa en versos líricos los sentimientos previos a su suicidio final. Ni la métrica sin responsio del pasaje, ni el texto evidentemente corrupto, ni la gramática inadecuada ayudan a comprender el sentido del pasaje. Tan así es que la mayoría de los editores ha renunciado a tratar de comprender el sentido de sus palabras. Sin embargo, creemos que la adecuada interpretación (...) de la metáfora utilizada por la esposa de Capaneo ayudará a la comprensión del pasaje: se trata de un priamel que se constituye en patético recordatorio del día de la boda por parte de una mujer que está a punto de suicidarse sobre la tumba de su esposo ya muerto. El fuego del rayo que mató a Capaneo, así como el fuego de la pira en donde arde ahora su cadáver (y en la que ella misma se arrojará muy pronto), le suscitan una serie de recuerdos de días mejores, vinculados todos ellos con el fuego y con la luz. La mención del carro del sol y de la luna, que constituye una metáfora casi cristalizada en la literatura griega, permite desarrollar de manera novedosa otra metáfora: las muchachas que, también ellas, cabalgan sobre la oscuridad portando sus antorchas. Evadne destaca la alegría que reinó el día de su boda, para que sea más agudo el contraste con el momento presente. The verses 990-1008 of Euripides’ Suppliants are a locus desperatus: Evadne there appears on the scene and expresses feelings in lyrical verse before his final suicide. Neither the passage’s metric without Responsio, or text clearly corrupt or improper grammar help make sense of the passage. So much so that most publishers have given up trying to understand the meaning of his words. However, we believe that the proper interpretation of the metaphor used by the wife of Capaneus help the understanding of the passage: it is one that constitutes priamel poignant reminder of the wedding day by a woman who is about to suicide on the grave of her husband already dead. The fire of lightning that killed Capaneus and fire burning pyre where his body is now (and which will throw herself very soon), will raise a number of memories of better days, all linked with the fire and light. The mention of the chariot of the sun and moon, which is a metaphor almost crystallized in Greek literature, enables a new way to develop another metaphor: the girls that they too ride on the dark carrying torches. Evadne highlights the joy that reigned on the day of her wedding, to be sharper contrast with the present moment. (shrink)

The Navarre-Venezuelan philosopher Juan David García Bacca is one of the most notable and original figures of Spanish-speaking thought, although his work has not yet received the attention it deserves. One of the pillars of his philosophy consists of what he calls a transfinite anthropology that considers man as an entity that strives to enhance his being. This anthropological approach is based on a phenomenology of nature that emphasizes the becoming and the transformations that man effects in the world. (...) In this philosophical context, García Bacca soon became interested in the work of Husserl, Scheler y Heidegger. This article deals with the way in which García Bacca describes and values Husserl’s descriptions of intentional consciousness. The problem that García Bacca poses to transcendental phenomenology concerns neither the reality of pure consciousness nor its objective scope. García Bacca is interested in finding out if there is a potentiation of the being of consciousness superior to or deeper than the self-reflection proper to the transcendental attitude. He discovers this potentiation in the notion of an “agonic consciousness” that resists the representation of its annihilation, and whose philosophical antecedent is found in the work of Miguel de Unamuno. Without sharing all of García Bacca’s interpretation of Husserlian phenomenology, the author of the article considers that it nevertheless raises relevant questions concerning the facticity and necessity proper to the transcendental subject. Juan de Vera’s El Enbaxador (1620) was one of the main treatises on the role of the ambassador in Early Modern Europe and the first one published in Spanish. At the time, Spain was no exception to the influence of Tacitus as a significant ancient author to inspire the political practice of the age. Juan de Vera, a nobleman and writer, soon an ambassador and entitled count, incorporated his own reading of Tacitus into El Enbaxador. Justus Lipsius, (...) the outstanding editor of Tacitus’ works, was also a main source for this book which was defined by John Elliott as a ‘quintessentially Lipsian handbook for diplomats’. The focus of this article is on Tacitus’ citations in El Enbaxador and their contexts within the book. My aim is to identify the specific themes for which Tacitus served as an exemplary source of guidance according to this particular text. Notably, some of such themes pertain to ambassadorial affairs, while others are common political topics in Early Modern Europe. Vera's reading of Tacitus in El Enbaxador gained wider dissemination beyond Spain as the work was subsequently translated into French and Italian. (shrink)

In this paper I argue that many scholars involved in the contemporary free will debates have underappreciated the philosophical appeal of agent causation because the resources of contemporary emergentism have not been adequately introduced into the discussion. Whereas I agree that agent causation’s main problem has to do with its intelligibility, particularly with respect to the issue of how substances can be causally relevant, I argue that the notion of substance causation can be clearly articulated from an emergentist framework. According (...) to my proposal, a free agent is _a causally powerful substance that emerges in an anomic way from her constitutive mental events_, downwardly constraining, selecting and, in this way, having control on them. As we shall see, this particular concept of agent causation not only makes sense of the deep insight behind agent libertarianism, but it also provides us with the resources to solve some of the main objections that have been raised against it. It is true that here I cannot develop a complete defense of the evidential credentials of emergentism. Still, even if the considerations that follow do not serve to convince detractors of agent causal libertarian accounts of free will, they do suggest that libertarian agent causation is more promising than is typically acknowledged. Many philosophers hold that if an agent acts intentionally, she must know what she is doing. Although the scholarly consensus for many years was to reject the thesis in light of presumed counterexamples by Donald Davidson, several scholars have recently argued that attention to aspectual distinctions and the practical nature of this knowledge shows that these counterexamples fail. In this paper I defend a new objection against the thesis, one modelled after Timothy Williamson’s anti-luminosity argument. Since this argument relies on (...) general principles about the nature of knowledge rather than on intuitions about fringe cases, the recent responses that have been given to defuse the force of Davidson’s objection are silent against it. Moreover, the argument suggests that even weaker theses connecting practical entities with knowledge are also false. Recent defenders of the thesis that there is a necessary connection between knowledge and intentional action are motivated by the insight that this connection is non-accidental. I close with a positive proposal to account for the non-accidentality of this link without appeal to necessary connections by drawing an extended analogy between practical and perceptual knowledge. Much of our know-how is acquired through practice: we learn how to cook by cooking, how to write by writing, and how to dance by dancing. As Aristotle argues, however, this kind of learning is puzzling, since engaging in it seems to require possession of the very knowledge one seeks to obtain. After showing how a version of the puzzle arises from a set of attractive principles, I argue that the best solution is to hold that knowledge-how comes in degrees, (...) and through practice a person gradually learns how to do something. However, the two standard accounts of know-how in the literature, intellectualism and anti-intellectualism, cannot properly account for the distinctive way in which know-how is gradually acquired by practice, a process in which conceptual representations and practical abilities are intimately interwoven. Drawing on Gareth Evans's work, I outline an account that may do so, and use this account to distinguish between two forms of learning to explain why skill generally cannot be learnt through testimony, and requires practice. Philosophical personalism has generated a very powerful field of study in the twentieth and twenty first centuries but has not produced a systematic exposition. This book fills this big gap by offering for the first time a full systematic personalistic vision of the human person. This ambitious volume offers a pedagogical and integrated exposition of philosophical personalism, answering vital questions about human identity and existence in a way that the reader can achieve an integrated view of the person. The book (...) points to the real life of each person so that, by partially unraveling the mystery of the personal being, it becomes a philosophical guide for life. For these reasons, the book can be used both for academic purposes, as a manual of philosophy of man or for personal enlightenment. Divided in five parts, the first part of the book works as an introduction, offering an overview of the human person and of the notion of person. The second part describes the internal structure of the human being addressing topics as corporeity as a personal fact; sensibility and the senses; affectivity; intelligence; freedom understood as choice and self-determination and, finally, the personal self. The third part analyses the person in action and some special types of action such as work and language. The fourth part deals with interpersonal relationships beginning with I-You relationship and following with the family and the social structure. Finally, part five deals with the so-called ultimate questions, that is, those that decide the final meaning of each person's life, namely, time, death, immortality, and religion. (shrink)

How do nuclear technologies become commonplace? How have the borders between the exceptional and the banal been drawn and redrawn over the last 70 years in order to make nuclear energy part of everyday life? This special issue analyzes the role of fun and display, broadly construed, in shaping the cultural representation and the material circulation (or non-circulation) of nuclear technologies. Four case studies, covering the United States, Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, and Ukraine from the 1950s to the 2000s, explore (...) how specific forms of public display and playful practices of cultural production were used as means to banalize (or de-banalize) nuclear energy. Among the many applications of artificial intelligence (AI), virtual assistants are one of the tools most likely to grow in the future. The development of these systems may play an increasingly important role in many facets of our lives. Therefore, given their potential importance and present and future weight, it is worthwhile to analyze what kind of challenges they entail. In this chapter, we will provide an overview of the ethical aspects of artificial virtual assistants. First, we provide a conceptual (...) clarification of the term ‘virtual assistant’, including different types of interfaces and recommender systems. Second, we address three ethical issues related to the deployment of these systems: their effects on human agency and autonomy and the subsequent cognitive dependence they would generate; the human obsolescence that may cause a generalized extension of the dependence problem; and the invasions of privacy that virtual assistants may cause. Finally, we outline the debates about the use of virtual assistants to improve human moral decisions and some areas in which these systems can be applied. (shrink)

Climate and evolution represents an important contribution to evolutionary biogeography, that influenced several authors, notably Karl P. Schmidt, George S. Myers, George G. Simpson, Philip J. Darlington, Ernst Mayr, Thomas Barbour, John C. Poynton, Allen Keast, Léon Croizat, Robin Craw, Michael Heads, and Osvaldo A. Reig. Authors belonging to the “New York School of Zoogeography” –a research community including Matthew, Schmidt, Myers and Simpson– accepted Matthew’s “Holarcticism” and the permanence of ocean basins and continents, whereas others, especially panbiogeographers and cladistic (...) biogeographers, were extremely critical and reacted against these ideas. “Holarcticism” has been falsified and rejected by dispersalists and the “New York School of Zoogeography” disappeared in the 1970s. Matthew, however, continues being identified by panbiogeographers and cladistic biogeographers as a key representative of classic dispersalism, helping provide some cohesion to their research communities. The present paper intends to draw the conception of language implied in the technique of word embeddings that supported the recent development of deep neural network models in computational linguistics. After a preliminary presentation of the basic functioning of elementary artificial neural networks, we introduce the motivations and capabilities of word embeddings through one of its pioneering models, word2vec. To assess the remarkable results of the latter, we inspect the nature of its underlying mechanisms, which have been characterized as the (...) implicit factorization of a word-context matrix. We then discuss the ordinary association of the “distributional hypothesis” with a “use theory of meaning,” often justifying the theoretical basis of word embeddings, and contrast them to the theory of meaning stemming from those mechanisms through the lens of matrix models (such as vector space models and distributional semantic models). Finally, we trace back the principles of their possible consistency through Harris’s original distributionalism up to the structuralist conception of language of Saussure and Hjelmslev. Other than giving access to the technical literature and state of the art in the field of natural language processing to non-specialist readers, the paper seeks to reveal the conceptual and philosophical stakes involved in the recent application of new neural network techniques to the computational treatment of language. This paper deals with the conceptual and historical-intellectual relationship that links Gilbert Simondon’s philosophy with cybernetics and information theory. For this purpose, it deploys three lines of analysis: the French reception of cybernetics and information theory, and the positioning of Simondon in that conceptual field; the transcendent meaning that Simondon assigns to them, as they express a new technological era of the twentieth century; Simondon’s criticisms of cybernetics and information theory, which tend to dismantle the nineteenth-century remains that affect them (...) from within and to think a new concept of genesis. Origins -- French personalism -- Other personalist currents -- Personalist philosophy: a proposal.

The purpose of this paper is to expose the function of the culture and thought of the Far East, expressed in Japanese Zen Buddhism and Chinese Chan (as well as, in general, in Chinese philosophy and culture), within the thought of Byung-Chul Han. This dimension of the Korean's work has not been sufficiently deepened in the analyses that are made of him. This error leads to mistakes such as stating that there is no emancipation proposal in Han or that his (...) work is limited to a pessimistic description of the world. Thus, the investigation that follows the bibliographic-documental research method is divided into three moments; the first exposes the foundations of the philosophy of Zen-chan Buddhism developed by Han; the second delineates the ontology of Hanian falsification and; the third, analyzes the theses on the East within Han's theoretical project. En el presente texto me propongo mostrar cómo puede entenderse el concepto de ‘metafísica’, no como el estudio de algo “sobrenatural” o “más allá de lo físico”, sino como un estudio de segundo orden que tendría por objeto de análisis los hipotéticos principios fundamentales y modelos de dependencia de la realidad. En este sentido, más que sostener juicios taxativos acerca de lo que las cosas son o qué tipo de entidades existen, las reflexiones de la metafísica podrían entenderse como análisis (...) acerca de las condiciones necesarias y suficientes para que una teoría de primer orden explique un aspecto de la realidad —o toda ella en su conjunto— de la mejor manera posible. Although during the last decades the philosophy of chemistry has greatly extended its thematic scope, the main difficulties appear in the attempt to link the chemical description of atoms and molecules and the description supplied by quantum mechanics. The aim of this paper is to analyze how the difficulties that threaten the continuous conceptual link between molecular chemistry and quantum mechanics can be overcome or, at least, moderated from the perspective of BM. With this purpose, in “The quantum-mechanical challenges” section (...) the foundational incompatibility between chemical and SQM descriptions will be briefly recalled. “Bohmian mechanics” section will be devoted to explain the main features of BM. In “Empirical equivalence and underdetermination” section, the consequences of the empirical equivalence between SQM and BM will be discussed. Finally, in the Conclusion, we will stress the scope of the obtained conclusions and the philosophical difficulties that still remain even after adopting BM for foundational purposes. (shrink)

Esta investigación forma parte de un Proyecto de Innovación Docente de la Universidad de Málaga (PIE19-179) que se inició en 2019 y que continuó en 2022 con el grupo de investigación PROCING de la Universidad de Huila-CORHUILA. El objetivo era tratar de desarrollar en el alumnado universitario el pensamiento crítico a través de la lectura crítica y la metodología Scrum como estrategias. La recopilación de datos se llevó a cabo con un cuestionario dividido en cuatro dimensiones y compuesto por 68 (...) ítems. Si bien los resultados del post-test en ambas universidades no son significativos, hubo un aumento en las respuestas a «siempre» en un 4% para los participantes de la Universidad de Málaga (España) y de un 6% en los estudiantes de la Universidad de Huila-CORHUILA (Colombia). En este artículo se pretende problematizar la noción de injusticia testimonial, mediante una reconstrucción históricofilosófica de algunos usos contemporáneos del testimonio. La literatura sobre el testimonio en el siglo XX no siempre considera la discusión filosófica acerca del significado epistémico del testimonio, pese a que ambos asuntos podrían articularse mejor si el testimonio se comprende desde sus usos históricos recientes, y si la interpretación de los testimonios históricos se sostiene en una concepción adecuada del dispositivo discursivo de la testificación. Se (...) realizó un análisis filosófico del discurso testimonial y una revisión histórica de sus usos en dos contextos testimoniales: los testimonios del Holocausto y la literatura del testimonio latinoamericana. Como resultado de esta reconstrucción históricofilosófica sugerimos ampliar la noción de injusticia testimonial para que, además del desconocimiento o rechazo de la palabra ajena, incorpore el enrarecimiento de la testificación que cabe reconocer en cierto paradigma contemporáneo expresivista de la memoria testimonial.AbstractIn this article we try to problematize the notion of testimonial injustice, through a historical-philosophical reconstruction of some contemporary uses of testimony. The literature on testimony in the twentieth century does not always consider the philosophical discussion of the epistemic meaning of testimony, although both issues could be articulated better if testimony is understood from its recent historical uses, and the interpretation of historic testimony is held on an adequate conception of the discursive device of witnessing. We conducted a philosophical analysis of testimonial discourse and a historical review of its use in two testimonial contexts: Holocaust Testimonies and Latin American literature of testimony. As a result of this historical-philosophical reconstruction, we suggest to expand the notion of testimonial injustice so that, apart from disregard or rejection of the word of others, it incorporates the rarefaction of witnessing, which can be recognized in a certain expressivist contemporary paradigm of testimonial memory. A central debate in philosophy of action concerns whether agential knowledge, the knowledge agents characteristically have of their own actions, is inferential. While inferentialists like Sarah Paul hold that it is inferential, others like Lucy O’Brien and Kieran Setiya argue that it is not. In this paper, I offer a novel argument for the view that agential knowledge is non-inferential, by posing a dilemma for inferentialists: on the first horn, inferentialism is committed to holding that agents have only alienated knowledge (...) of their own actions; on the second horn, inferentialism is caught in a vicious regress. Neither option is attractive, so inferentialism should be rejected. (shrink)

El artículo reflexiona en torno a las nociones de dispositivo (Foucault) y agenciamiento (Deleuze-Guattari), operando un análisis morfológico que destaca convergencias y divergencias conceptuales en el marco de una misma práctica teórica entendida como pragmática de la multiplicidad.

This paper investigates ‘authoritative knowledge’, a neglected species of practical knowledge gained on the basis of exercising practical authority. I argue that, like perceptual knowledge, authoritative knowledge is non-inferential. I then present a broadly reliabilist account of the process by which authority yields knowledge, and use this account to address certain objections.

La sección 32 del tratado De anima de Jámblico comienza con el análisis de tres posibles explicaciones acerca del modo en que el alma ingresa en el cuerpo. Las dos primeras son anónimas mientras que la tercera es atribuida por el filósofo de Calcis a los seguidores de Plotino. El tema se anuncia en la sección anterior en la que puede leerse desde el principio una referencia a “Hipócrates el Asclepíade” que conecta con una sentencia anterior que se ha perdido (...) y que marcaría el comienzo de la argumentación. Como posible fuente de Jámblico se suele citar a Porfirio, quien incluye las opiniones de Hipócrates, de un filósofo anónimo y de Numenio de Apamea sobre el momento en que comienza la vida y el alma se asocia de manera natural con el cuerpo. En el desarrollo de estas argumentaciones se aprecia un conocimiento implícito de las hipótesis embriológicas de la época. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo vamos a otear el paisaje de la fatalidad que, sin duda, representan los escritos de Cioran, con el objetivo de analizar si es posible una solución afirmativa, al estilo de la música y el arte en Schopenhauer o el vitalismo de Simmel, a la esencia problemática de la existencia humana, lo que significa tratar de dilucidar acerca de si es posible la liberación del sufrimiento en el sujeto o, en caso de no serlo, ver en qué (...) medida podemos mitigar el dolor adoptando otro tipo de filosofías de orden terapéutico frente a otro tipo de filo-sofías de carácter pesimista que abogan por la negación de la vida como es el caso de la filosofía de la redención de Mainländer. En varios de sus trabajos, Susan Sontag trató de pensar qué podían las imágenes de y ante el sufrimiento de los otros: ¿nos ayudan a comprender o nos insensibilizaban?, ¿en qué contextos y regímenes de circulación son capaces de generar solidaridad hacia la víctima?, ¿en qué condiciones fueron producidas y recepcionadas las fotografías de torturas inflingidas a prisioneros en Vietnam —en los años setenta— e Irak —en los dos mil— y hasta qué punto esas condiciones modifican la percepción social de (...) las violaciones de los derechos humanos? El presente artículo trata de localizar, analizar y poner en valor las aportaciones de Sontag sobre las fotografías de atrocidades, en general, y de tortura en particular. (shrink)

Media ecology is not the theoretical stream of communication studies and it is not limited to Marshall McLuhan´s work and thinking; however, we focus on McLuhan’s approach to media ecology for this special issue on the philosophy of Marshall McLuhan. Media ecology is a complex and systemic metadiscipline whose object of study is the changes and effects that have occurred in society as a result of the evolution of technology and media throughout history.

The Handbook of Bioethical Decisions Volume II addresses and analyzes the most important ethical concerns and moral quandaries related to scientific integrity and institutional ethics. This study proposes and tests a model that integrates culture, attitudes, subjective norms, and attributions into a theoretical framework that explains tolerance toward nepotism in a Latin American country. The participants were 202 Ecuadorian middle and upper managers. The results suggested that attitudes, subjective norms, and attributions significantly predict managerial intention to discipline those employees who favored a family member when hiring. Furthermore, subjective norms and internal attributions mediated the relationship between culture and intentions to discipline employees who engaged in (...) nepotistic acts. Our findings highlight the need to implement culture-congruent HR practices to effect mission-driven changes in talent management practices. (shrink)

RESUMEN Con frecuencia el amor y la racionalidad se ven como capacidades que fácilmente entran en conflicto, cuando no se consideran por principio opuestas. En este artículo desarrollo algunos puntos esbozados por Harry Frankfurt con el fin de proponer que la relación entre amor y racionalidad no es de simple oposición. Tras ofrecer una caracterización del amor como disposición híbrida de seguimiento múltiple, defenderé que el amor es racional en el siguiente sentido: el amor no es justificable, pero a pesar (...) de ello es una fuente de razones básicas y a veces irresistibles que en buena medida informan el campo de nuestra racionalidad. Esto no significa que el amor sea una base irracional o arracional, o que sea completamente blindado a la razón, sino que en circunstancias específicas tiene sentido someter el amor a escrutinio racional. ABSTRACT Love and rationality are often considered as capacities which easily come into conflict, or are even opposed to one another. In the paper I elaborate some points suggested by Harry Frankfurt in order to propose that the relation between love and rationality is not one of opposition. After offering a characterization of love as a hybrid multi-track disposition, I will argue that love is rational in the following sense: although love is not justifiable, it is nevertheless a source of basic and sometimes irresistible reasons which to a large extent shape the field of our rationality. This does not mean that love is an irrational or arrational foundation, or that it is impervious to reason; it only means that in certain circumstances it makes sense to subject love to rational scrutiny. This paper advances the analysis of the concept of Umwelt in Jakob von Uexküll’s work, by examining its different formulations, and highlighting the successive redefinitions of its two components: the perception world and the effect world. Considering the significant impact that the concept of Umwelt had on continental philosophy, the purpose of this study is to reconstruct its meaning through a historical-conceptual analysis, to illuminate some aspects that are not usually thematized in literature—in particular, those related to the effect world.

El artículo analiza el sentido histórico-conceptual que asume la teoría de Jacob von Uexküll sobre el fondo del problema formas/vida que se despliega en la filosofía continental de principios del siglo XX. Para ello, en primer lugar, reconstruye la configuración epistemológica que presenta el pensamiento biológico entre 1890-1920, e introduce las tesis neovitalistas de Hans Driesch. En segundo lugar, analiza la emergencia de las metafísicas vitalistas de Henri Bergson y de Georg Simmel, y plantea el problema de la contradicción entre (...) las formas y la vida. Por último, y sobre la base de dichos desarrollos, defiende la tesis según la cual la obra de Uexküll moviliza un estructuralismo vitalista para el cual “Vida igual a Forma”. (shrink)

After posing the problem of technocracy according to the debate between Marcuse and Habermas, the article situates Simondon’s perspective and, thematizing the relations between society, culture and technological development, it analyzes a series of ethical and political elements involved in his philosophy. In this vein, the paper addresses Simondon’s criticism of the technocratic utopia, introduces his conceptualization of the technique and examines the three concepts he provides to rethink political practice.

RESUMEN Este artículo analiza la operación reflexiva que Gilbert Simondon efectúa sobre la Gestaltpsychologie, buscando aportar elementos relevantes para pensar las premisas sobre las cuales el autor erige su teoría de la individuación, así como el sentido histórico-conceptual de esta última en un contexto dominado por esquemas formales sincrónicos. Para ello, y teniendo como eje la tensión entre forma e individuación, presenta un esquema general de lectura para abordar la relación de Simondon con la Gestaltpsychologie, desprendiendo de allí tres cuestiones: (...) el uso metodológico de la analogía; la crítica simondoniana a la primera etapa de la psicología de la forma y al "principio del equilibrio estable"; el análisis simondoniano de la tercera etapa de dicha escuela, y del "principio de organización estructural", desde el horizonte del problema del comportamiento. ABSTRACT The article analyzes the reflexive operation that Gilbert Simondon makes on the Gestaltpsychologie, seeking to provide relevant elements to think the premises on which the author builds his theory of individuation, as well as the historical-conceptual sense of the latter in a context dominated by synchronic formal schemes. To this end, and having as an axis the tension between form and individuation, it presents a general reading scheme to study the relation between Simondon and the Gestaltpsychologie, and derives three topics: the methodological use of analogy; the simondonian criticism of the first stage of the psychology of form and of the "principle of stable equilibrium"; the simondonian analysis of the third stage of that school, and of the "principle of structural organization", from the horizon of the problem of behavior. ABSTRACT The article analyzes and critically discusses the "analogical method" mobilized by Gilbert Simondon's philosophy of individuation. It sets forth the conditions of the problem and reconstructs the debate it has triggered among interpreters; specifies the isodynamic and genetic character of Simondon's analogical practice, as well as its specific object; analyzes the theoretical link with Bruno de Solages' Dialogue sur l'analogie ; and concludes with a reflection on the tensions cutting across the analogical method as intermediary between epistemology and metaphysics. Reading experience is viewed as ‘interactive and negotiable’ for different reading positions are created in readers’ responses to the same news report. To understand the differences between ‘preferred reading’ and actual readings, this article, drawing on the context models and the Appraisal framework, analyzes 785 readers’ comments attached to 23 hard news stories sourced from the China Daily mobile application and the People’s Daily Online website. The study combines corpus semantic tagging analysis for readers’ choices of evaluative lexis with a (...) manual analysis of Appraisal resources for reading position construction based on a whole text perspective. The results show that readers are likely to use Appraisal resources strategically to defend their own opinions against other commenters or affiliate with large numbers of potential readers without commenting. Furthermore, comments were found to be directed either at the text or at other commenters, and through this a number of different reading positions were revealed. The readers’ context models are the cognitive link between discourse properties and social strategies in the process of news understanding. (shrink)
