Justice at Nuremberg: Leo Alexander and the Nazi doctors' trial.Ulf Schmidt - 2004 - New York: Palgrave-Macmillan.
Justice at Nuremberg traces the history of the Nuremberg Doctors' Trial held in 1946-47, as seen through the eyes of the Austrian bliogemigrbliogé psychiatrist Leo Alexander. His investigations helped the United States to prosecute twenty German doctors and three administrators for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The legacy of Nuremberg was profound. In the Nuremberg code--a landmark in the history of modern medical ethics--the judges laid down, for the first time, international guidelines for permissible experiments on humans. One of (...)

Minds at rest? Social cognition as the default mode of cognizing and its putative relationship to the "default system" of the brain.Leo Schilbach, Simon B. Eickhoff, Anna Rotarska-Jagiela, Gereon R. Fink & Kai Vogeley - 2008 - Consciousness and Cognition 17 (2):457--467.
The “default system” of the brain has been described as a set of regions which are ‘activated’ during rest and ‘deactivated’ during cognitively effortful tasks. To investigate the reliability of task-related deactivations, we performed a meta-analysis across 12 fMRI studies. Our results replicate previous findings by implicating medial frontal and parietal brain regions as part of the “default system”.However, the cognitive correlates of these deactivations remain unclear. In light of the importance of social cognitive abilities for human beings and their (...)

Ecclesia reformata semper reformanda’ Church renewal from a Reformed perspective.Leo J. Koffeman - 2015 - HTS Theological Studies 71 (3).
With a view to the theme of church renewal, this article explores the role of a well-known and popular phrase in the Reformed tradition within Protestantism, that is, ecclesia reformata semper reformanda [‘the reformed church should always be reformed’]. Is this a helpful slogan when considering the possibilities and the limitations of church renewal? Firstly, the historical background of this phrase is described: it is rooted in the Dutch Reformed tradition, and only in the 20th century it was widely recognised (...)

Ethics of college vaccine mandates, using reasonable comparisons.Leo L. Lam & Taylor Nichols - 2024 - Journal of Medical Ethics 50 (2):140-142.
In the paper ‘COVID-19 vaccine boosters for young adults: a risk–benefit assessment and ethical analysis of mandate policies at universities,’ Bardoshet alargued that college mandates of the COVID-19 booster vaccine are unethical. The authors came to this conclusion by performing three different sets of comparisons of benefits versus risks using referenced data and argued that the harm outweighs the risk in all three cases. In this response article, we argue that the authors frame their arguments by comparing values that are (...)

Intuitionistic logic and modality via topology.Leo Esakia - 2004 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 127 (1-3):155-170.
In the pioneering article and two papers, written jointly with McKinsey, Tarski developed the so-called algebraic and topological frameworks for the Intuitionistic Logic and the Lewis modal system. In this paper, we present an outline of modern systems with a topological tinge. We consider topological interpretation of basic systems GL and G of the provability logic in terms of the Cantor derivative and the Hausdorff residue.

    The identity of argument-places.Joop Leo - 2008 - Review of Symbolic Logic 1 (3):335-354.
Argument-places play an important role in our dealing with relations. However, that does not mean that argument-places should be taken as primitive entities. It is possible to give an account of relations in which argument-places play no role. But if argument-places are not basic, then what can we say about their identity? Can they, for example, be reconstructed in set theory with appropriate urelements? In this article, we show that for some relations, argument-places cannot be modeled in a neutral way (...)

    Current Ethical Issues in Polish HRM.Leo V. Ryan - 2006 - Journal of Business Ethics 66 (2-3):273-290.
Contemporary HRM was introduced into Poland by the arrival of international corporations with their professional systems of Human Resource Management, which emphasizes ethical personnel management. This research is based on data collected from a questionnaire and interview of 40 women and men professional graduates of the 2004 Weekend MBA Program at Poznan University of Economics eliciting their perceptions of ethical issues in Polish HRM. The present Polish economic situation, with 19% unemployment, precipitates many ethical challenges. The questionnaire and interviews resulted (...)

    Coordinate-free logic.Joop Leo - 2016 - Review of Symbolic Logic 9 (3):522-555.
A new logic is presented without predicates—except equality. Yet its expressive power is the same as that of predicate logic, and relations can faithfully be represented in it. In this logic we also develop an alternative for set theory. There is a need for such a new approach, since we do not live in a world of sets and predicates, but rather in a world of things with relations between them.

    On Larry Temkin’s Rethinking the Good.Leo Katz - 2015 - Journal of Moral Philosophy 12 (4):414-427.
This essay offers a critique of Larry Temkin’s seminal new book, Rethinking the Good, at the heart of which is the highly counterintuitive claim that all things considered judgments are not transitive. I evaluate Temkin’s claims through the lens of social choice theory, pursue some of its larger implications and applications, and conclude with a very general worry having to do with the intimate connection between transitivity and logical consistency, namely whether, if Temkin is right, this would not bring all (...)

The Emergence of Lying for Reputational Concerns in 5-Year-Olds.Mareike Klafka & Ulf Liszkowski - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Research suggests that even young children engage in strategic behaviors to manipulate the impressions others form of them and that they manage their reputation in order to cooperate with others. The current study investigated whether young children also lie in order to manage their, or their group’s, reputation in front of ingroup and outgroup members. Five-year old children were randomly assigned to an individual reputation condition or a group reputation condition. Then, they played a mini dictator game in which they (...)

We also present a short review of relational and topological semantics for these systems, and describe the dual category of algebraic models of our main modal system.

On the Compatibility Between Confucianism and Modern Olympism.Leo Hsu & Jesùs Ilundáin-Agurruza - 2016 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 43 (1-2):103-123.
At the confluence between Modern Olympism and Confucian teachings—nowadays embodied and expressed in East Asian Confucianisms—there are meaningful overlaps, significant challenges, and opportunities. This paper examines these. Despite radically different origins and apparently incommensurate tenets, we should not assume that the underlying ideals of Modern Olympism and East Asian Confucianisms cannot benefit mutually. It is precisely when considering their putative weak points, such as Modern Olympism's soft metaphysics or vague ethics or Confucianism's bias against physical activity or gender, that we (...)

Zionist Internationalism through Number Theory: Edmund Landau at the Opening of the Hebrew University in 1925.Leo Corry & Norbert Schappacher - 2010 - Science in Context 23 (4):427-471.
ArgumentThis article gives the background to a public lecture delivered in Hebrew by Edmund Landau at the opening ceremony of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1925. On the surface, the lecture appears to be a slightly awkward attempt by a distinguished German-Jewish mathematician to popularize a few number-theoretical tidbits. However, quite unexpectedly, what emerges here is Landau's personal blend of Zionism, German nationalism, and the proud ethos of pure, rigorous mathematics – against the backdrop of the situation of Germany (...)

Religion, that globalising influence par excellence, constitutes the most powerful known factor of political, economic, social, and national integration. However, religion can also at times be a factor of disintegration ornon-integration, because of its historic vision. The lesions of millenarianisms prefigure the hopes, problems, failures and the illusions of society.Time has, in itself, an ideological dimension that varies according to the perception that one has of it : positive or negative, turned toward the past of the future, inevitably neutral or (...)
