While we agree that the frame problem, as initially stated by McCarthy and Hayes (1969), is a problem that arises because of the use of representations, we do not accept the anti-representationalist position that the way around the problem is to eliminate representations. We believe that internal representations of the external world are a necessary, perhaps even a defining feature, of higher cognition. We explore the notion of dynamically created context-dependent representations that emerge from a continual interaction between working memory, (...) external input, and long-term memory. We claim that only this kind of representation, necessary for higher cognitive abilities such as counterfactualization, will allow the combinatorial explosion inherent in the frame problem to be avoided. Partant de la conception nietzschéenne de la morale fondée sur La généalogie de la morale, Anselme Mbemba-Mpandzou élucide les motifs d'aversion de Nietzsche pour la morale chrétienne. Il construit sa démarche à partir de trois interrogations : 1) Pourquoi Nietzsche critique-t-il la morale chrétienne? 2) La critique nietzschéenne de la morale chrétienne débouche-t-elle sur la fondation d'une nouvelle table des valeurs? 3) Si Nietzsche exalte la vie, l'instinct de vie, cette exaltation obéit-elle à une finalité? Par-delà la critique de (...) la morale chrétienne par Nietzsche, il ressort de l'analyse d'Anselme Mbemba-Mpandzou que les chrétiens, spécialement les Africains, doivent se débarrasser du "Dieu" chrétien et des valeurs qui s'y rattachent. "Car le Dieu moral, façonné par des hommes décadents, nous a assez divertis. Nous devons rompre les amarres pour qu'on se libère définitivement. Le livre veut répondre aux accusations selon lesquelles les philosophes passent leur temps dans des spéculations stériles et inutiles, se soustrayant au monde vécu. Il s'agit de montrer, à partir de l'œuvre du français Merleau-Ponty, que la philosophie ne doit pas chercher à s'évader du monde, mais encore que l'existence humaine est elle-même à vivre et à penser comme une existence "incarnée" dans le monde. Le propos s'ouvre à d'éventuels prolongements pour une pensée philosophie africaine.

Le livre s'applique à une étude brève mais saillante de la notion de narrativité telle qu'abordée par le philosophe Paul Ricoeur. Il s'agit surtout de montrer que l'auteur de Temps et Récit (1-3) a opéré une véritable traversée scientifique pour une étude fouillée et bien documentée de l'acte de raconter et de ses capacités opératoires. Le but dernier du livre est de montrer l'interdisciplinarité en oeuvre dans l'élaboration des notions philosophiques.

The development of natural theology in the Middle Ages was driven by the rebirth experienced by Western Europe beginning in the 1000s owing to the emergence of stable monarchies and reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. This expansion gave scholars access to the vast libraries of scientific and philosophical literature held in Arabic cultural centres – libraries that contained Aristotelian works on natural, ethical, and metaphysical sciences, which had for centuries been lost to the Latin West. The new texts fed the (...) growth of universities, where secular interests helped shape the curriculum, as the centre of intellectual gravity shifted from the monastery to the town. This chapter examines the figures that represent various moments in the medieval tradition, during and after these developments. Anselm and Abelard immediately predate the universities and recovery of Aristotle. Aquinas and John Duns Scotus write on either side of the Condemnations of 1277. Raymonde of Sabunde's work first applies the expression ‘natural theology’ to Christian practice, and Yves of Paris seeks late into the seventeenth century to revitalize this project. The paper builds on the stakeholder salience framework and applies a social identity approach to explain family firm dynamics and how these could impact on family firm governance and ethics. In particular, we consider the family as the main stakeholder for family firms and we refer to the recent approaches to stakeholder theory based on ‘names-and-faces’ and on social identity to focus on family members at the individual and organizational level. Family businesses offer an opportunity to study stakeholder salience in (...) settings with multiple logics. Our paper acknowledges how the attributes of legitimacy, power and status, for family business members, can derive from three different institutional settings (family, business and local community) and how these attributes are assigned and gained by family members on the basis of the stakes they put (or could put) on the business. From the analysis of these dynamics specific ethical considerations emerge. (shrink)

In this paper, we provide a macro level analysis of the visibility of philosophy of science in the sciences over the last four decades. Our quantitative analysis of publications and citations of philosophy of science papers, published in 17 main journals representing the discipline, contributes to the longstanding debate on the influence of philosophy of science on the sciences. It reveals the global structure of relationships that philosophy of science maintains with science, technology, engineering and mathematics and social sciences and (...) humanities fields. Explored at the level of disciplines, journals and authors, this analysis of the relations between philosophy of science and a large and diversified array of disciplines allows us to answer several questions: what is the degree of openness of various disciplines to the specialized knowledge produced in philosophy of science? Which STEM and SSH fields and journals have privileged ties with philosophy of science? What are the characteristics, in terms of citation and publication patterns, of authors who get their philosophy of science papers cited outside their field? Complementing existing qualitative inquiries on the influence of specific authors, concepts or topics of philosophy of science, the bibliometric approach proposed in this paper offers a comprehensive portrait of the multiple relationships that links philosophy of science to the sciences. Infants' own activities create and actively select their learning experiences. Here we review recent models of embodied information seeking and curiosity-driven learning and show that these mechanisms have deep implications for development and evolution. We discuss how these mechanisms yield self-organized epigenesis with emergent ordered behavioral and cognitive developmental stages. We describe a robotic experiment that explored the hypothesis that progress in learning, in and for itself, generates intrinsic rewards: The robot learners probabilistically selected experiences according to their potential for (...) reducing uncertainty. In these experiments, curiosity-driven learning led the robot learner to successively discover object affordances and vocal interaction with its peers. We explain how a learning curriculum adapted to the current constraints of the learning system automatically formed, constraining learning and shaping the developmental trajectory. The observed trajectories in the robot experiment share many properties with those in infant development, including a mixture of regularities and diversities in the developmental patterns. Finally, we argue that such emergent developmental structures can guide and constrain evolution, in particular with regard to the origins of language. (shrink)

Résumé. : La réflexivité constitue une thématique à la mode, qui traduit à sa façon une évolution importante dans la façon de penser les pratiques sociales. Mais pour cette même raison, sa conception est encore instable, et les sens et usages dont elle est l’objet sont pour le moins multiples. Pour effectuer un travail de conception sur la notion de réflexivité, il faut d’abord montrer en quoi elle est objet d’une inflation normative la posant comme catégorie logique si attendue qu’une (...) critique en est presque pas pensable. Or, cette aura très (trop) positive doit être dispersée pour qu’un travail théorique rigoureux puisse émerger. Le présent article propose de contribuer à une théorie de la réflexivité en décrivant l’aire de dispersion des usages de cette notion, distribués sur cinq plans logiques. Abstract: Reflectivity is a popular theme that in its own manner reflects an important evolution in the way social practices are thought about. For this very reason, however, its conception is still unstable and it has multiple senses and usages, to say the least. Undertaking conceptual work on the notion of reflectivity first requires that one show how it has undergone the normative inflation that has established it as such an expected logical category that critiquing it almost seems unthinkable. This very (overly) positive aura must be dissipated so that rigorous theoretical work can emerge. The present article proposes to contribute to a theory of reflectivity by describing the area of dispersion of the notion’s use, distributed across five logical levels. (shrink)

It is known that there exists a first-order sentence that holds in a finite group if and only if the group is soluble. Here it is shown that the corresponding statements with ‘solubility’ replaced by ‘nilpotence’ and ‘perfectness’, among others, are false.These facts present difficulties for the study of pseudofinite groups. However, a very weak form of Frattini’s theorem on the nilpotence of the Frattini subgroup of a finite group is proved for pseudofinite groups.

The article focuses on the implementation of a socio-technical device aimed at integrating services for older adults living with loss of functional autonomy in France. It unfolds in three parts. The first introduces the theories of innovation, the second presents the innovative model of integrated services, and the last part deals with the relationship that practitioners have with socio-technical devices that make up the innovation in the French context. It will be seen that this report is carried out in an (...) epistemic tension between a philic representation of these devices, which are supposed to bring about an expected renewal of professional and managerial practices, and a phobic representation, projecting on the innovation different fantasies as to their more or less explicit totalitarian character. Despite this tension, the real challenge is that of the coherence- as perceived by adopters of the innovation- between the principles underlying the innovation and the real will of its political promoters. Par-delà les effets de mode et les motifs politiques qui ont pu aider ou nuire à sa réception, l’œuvre de Gilles Deleuze semble plus que jamais mobilisée et retravaillée dans des domaines étonnamment divers de la pensée contemporaine. Notre ouvrage s’inscrit dans ce contexte vivant par une série d’études et de dialogues critiques centrés sur trois aspects fondamentaux : les propositions deleuziennes pour une philosophie de la nature, ses propositions sur le statut et le propre de la pensée et, enfin, (...) les horizons politiques d’une œuvre protéiforme. Trois aspects par lesquels cet esprit classique qu’était aussi Deleuze retrouvait peu ou prou la tripartition stoïcienne de la philosophie. L’importance de l’apport du psychologue russe Lev Vygotski est largement sous-estimée. Au-delà du dualisme qui domine toujours la psychologie et la psychanalyse, Vygotski ouvre la voie, par sa conception spinoziste des affects et de la transindividualité, à une pratique inédite de la dynamique collective dépassant l’opposition freudienne de l’individu et de la société. Un nouvel art des passions en commun serait la condition d’une régénération des individus déficients aussi bien que de la psychanalyse elle-même.

Cette revue critique embrasse trois ouvrages récents permettant une nouvelle approche de la psychologie par la philosphie : celui de Pascal Séverac sur les rapports entre Lev Vygotski et Spinoza et l’édition de traductions de La Science du développement de l’enfant et des Notebooks de Vygotski.

Attention in the 21st century is commonly perceived as being in insufficient supply. Increasing numbers of children and adults arediagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) worldwide. This article suggests that our understanding of attentional deficits could gain from a double reframing. First, the notion of “impairment” (as recently discussed by Jonathan Sterne) seems more appropriate than the category of “disorder” to unfold the stakes of attentional problems. Second, approaching attentional issues as collective and organizational questions seems more empowering (...) than as individual shortcomings—and the notion of “ferality” (as developed by Anna Tsing and the contributors to the Feral Atlas) provides an enlightening tool to account for the role played byinfrastructures in the production of attentional deficits. As a result, the article sketches two compasses designed to help us develop a “collapsonaut attention” more in tune with the challenges of the Anthropocene. (shrink)

This paper discusses the epistemological and methodological bases of a scientific theory of meaning and proposes a detailed version of a formal theory of argumentation based on Anscombre and Ducrot's conception. Argumentation is shown to be a concept which is not exclusively pragmatic, as it is usually believed, but has an important semantic body. The bridge between the semantic and pragmatic aspects of argumentation consists in a set of gradual inference rules, called topoi, on which the argumentative movement is based. (...) The content of each topos is determined at the pragmatic level, while the constraints on the forms of the topoi attached to a sentence are determined at the semantic level. Applications and possible applications toartificial intelligence and to cognitive sciences are discussed. In particular, the gradual models used to account for argumentation are shown to be extremely promising for Knowledge management, a discipline which includes knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, transmission of knowledge (communication, interfaces, etc.), knowledge production (decision help, reasoning, etc.). A first formal model is presented and discussed: it is shown in details how it accounts for most of the argumentative features of sentences containing but, little and a little, and how it can be extended to describe sentences containing other argumentative connectives. However, this model is shown to be too simple and to violate the compositionality principle, which is shown, in the first section, to bean important methodological principle for any scientific theory. After a detailed analysis of the possible reasons for this violation, an improved model is proposed and its adequacy is discussed. (shrink)

La fin du second millénaire a été marquée par un retour en force des différents discours vertueux : celui tenu par les fondamentalistes, isla-mistes et intégristes, par les populistes, par les médias dans les « affaires » de corruption et autres, par les « post-matérialistes » et par les commu-nautariens substantialistes et néo-aristotéliciens. Ce type de discours semble toutefois aujourd’hui perdre en influence, et ce, sans doute, parce qu’une éthique de la responsabilité permet de mieux faire front aux défis contemporains (...) qu’un discours vertueux ou une éthique de la vertu.The end of the second millennium was marked by the return in force of various « virtuous » discourses : that of the fundamentalists, Islamists and integrists, that of the populists, that of the mass media in the cases of corruption, that of the « post-materialists » and that of the neo-Aristotelian communitarians. However, this kind of discourse seems to lose a part of its influence at present probably because an ethics of responsibility allows to respond better to the contemporary challenges than a « virtuous » discourse or an ethics of virtue. Ils en arrivent à la conclusion que le gouvernement fédéral, au nom de l’intégrité, devrait abolir le poste de conseiller en éthique puisque ce dernier, dans les faits, ne joue qu’un rôle de conseiller politique. Les auteurs proposent également, exemples à l’appui, de revitaliser nos démocraties parlementaires et d’en augmenter la transparence par l’entremise d’institutions publiques redevables (...) uniquement au parlement. Cet article se veut une illustration de nos recherches sur les scandales et la production de connaissance concernant les vulnérabilités organisationnelles. Il présente un segment des résultats de l’analyse découlant de la recherche exploratoire faite au sein de la nouvelle administration municipale de la Ville de Laval. Cette recherche voulait valider l’utilité des diagnostics des risques éthiques pour les organisations qui tentent de se sortir de la tourmente d’un scandale. Notre chantier de recherche sur la gestion des risques éthiques dans (...) les organisations publiques a été développé pour pallier les limites du champ d’intervention traditionnel de l’éthique appliquée, c’est-à-dire une éthique purement individuelle qui se limite trop souvent à mettre en doute la responsabilité professionnelle des acteurs et faire la promotion de la stricte compétence éthique des acteurs. Nous embrassons ici plutôt une démarche de recherche orientée vers une éthique dite institutionnelle, c’est-à-dire une éthique qui invite à remettre en question les actions individuelles et collectives en les mettant en contexte dans les situations d’actions. L’éthique institutionnelle qui est sous-jacente à l’approche défendue dans ce texte nous amène à réfléchir tant sur la qualité des conduites professionnelles que sur les facteurs qui, dans l’environnement du travail, ont une incidence négative sur la qualité des conduites. Le but de cet article est de démontrer que la recherche sur l’éthique dans les services publics ne peut plus se faire en vase clos autour de l’analyse des valeurs éthiques et la résolution des dilemmes éthiques, elle doit plutôt s’ouvrir à des analyses plus systémiques en jetant un regard analytique tant sur le cadre normatif, les instances régulatoires, la culture organisationnelle, le design institutionnel et les processus de gestion ; tout cela pour mieux saisir toutes les dimensions institutionnelles qui influencent la qualité des conduites des acteurs organisationnels.
