Iamblichus of Chalcis: the letters. Iamblichus, John M. Dillon & Wolfgang Polleichtner - 2010 - Boston: Brill. Edited by John M. Dillon & Wolfgang Polleichtner.
Iamblichus is the only Platonist philosopher whose philosophical letters have survived from the ancient world. These nineteen letters, which are translated into English here for the first time, address such topics as providence, fate, concord, marriage, bringing up children, ingratitude, music, and the cardinal virtues, with some letters addressed to students and others to prominent members of Syrian society and the imperial administration. The letters reflect the concerns of popular moral philosophy and illustrate the more public aspects of Iamblichus s (...)

    Jamblique de Chalcis[REVIEW]O. D. - 1975 - Review of Metaphysics 28 (3):559-561.
The work of the later Greek neo-Platonists remains largely inaccessible to the modern philosopher. Many of the extant texts have not yet been translated from the Greek, and in some cases the texts that have survived are of lesser importance than those that have not, and so must be reconstructed on the basis of reports in later authors. This task of recovery has been undertaken recently in the case of the Syrian Greek Iamblichus by J. M. Dillon, and by Larsen (...)

  8. 'Oudéneia and humilitas'. Nature and function of humility in Iamblichus and Augustine.Hans Feichtinger - 2003 - Dionysius 21:123-160.
The article focuses on Jamblichus’ concept of “nothingness” in comparison to Augustine’s humility as turning-point and conditions for the soul’s ascent to the divine and/or for salvation. It claims that both authors respond to specific teachings of Porphyry, who thus appears as something like a common enemy, and can help explain certain similarities between the Hellenic theurgist and the Catholic bishop, notwithstanding other profound differences between their philosophical views on the human person and its relation to the divine.

    How did Iamblichus select Plato’s dialogues for his Canon?Д. С Курдыбайло - 2023 - Philosophy Journal 16 (4):106-123.
Iamblichus of Chalcis, one of the most prominent Neoplatonists of the third – fourth centuries AD, introduced a list of twelve principal Plato’s dialogues that should have been compulsory studied by his disciples. This list was called the Canon of Iamblichus. However, the survived Iamblichus’ writings contain no information on the Canon; and later Neoplatonists provide very scant mentions on the subject. It is the sole anonymous manuscript of the sixth century that counts twelve dialogues in the Canon and (...)

Some years past I perceived how many Falsities I admitted off as Truths in my Younger years, and how Dubious those things were which I raised from thence; and therefore I thought it requisite (if I had a designe to establish any thing that should prove firme and permanent in sciences) that once in my life I should clearly cast aside all my former opinions, and begin a new from some First principles. But this seemed a great Task, and I still expected that maturity of years, then which none could be more apt to receive Learning; upon which account I waited so long, that at last I should deservedly be blamed had I spent that time in Deliberation which remain'd only for Action.Of Things Doubtful - 2006 - In Stephen Gaukroger (ed.), The Blackwell Guide to Descartes' Meditations. A Meta-Analysis of the “Erasing Race” Effect in the United States and Some Theoretical Considerations.Michael A. Woodley of Menie, Michael D. Heeney, Mateo Peñaherrera-Aguirre, Matthew A. Sarraf, Randy Banner & Heiner Rindermann - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11:525658.
The “erasing race” effect is the reduction of the salience of “race” as an alliance cue when recalling coalition membership, once more accurate information about coalition structure is presented. We conducted a random-effects model meta-analysis of this effect using five United States studies (containing nine independent effect sizes). The effect was found (ρ = 0.137, K = 9, 95% CI = 0.085 to 0.188). However, no decline effect or moderation effects were found (a “decline effect” in this context would be (...)

LH has moderate to high population-level heritability in humans, both at the level of the high-order Super-K Factor and the lower-order factors, the K-Factor, Covitality Factor, and General Factor of Personality (GFP). Several important questions remain unexplored. We developed measures of genome-level (...)

Singing of divine identities in a liturgical space? John Damascene's treatise on the Trisagion and his anti-heretical polemics.Fr Damaskinos Of Xenophontos - 2018 - Approaching Religion 8 (2):17-26.
John Damascene, one of the most productive Greek theologians of the Middle Byzantine era, also composed a treatise on the Trisagion hymn, or how it should be sung correctly and why; a text that has been little discussed in contemporary scholarship. The present paper provides an overview of the work – with special reference to the notion of identity in John’s description of the Trinitarian doctrine. It also examines the treatise especially in the context of anti-heretical polemics. The author argues (...)

The Historia Novella is a key source for the succession dispute between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda which brought England to civil war in the twelfth century. William of Malmesbury was the doyen of the historians of his day. His account of the main events of the years 1126 to 1142, to some of which he was an eyewitness, is sympathetic to the empress's cause, but not uncritical of her. Edmund King offers a complete revision of K. R. Potter's (...)
