Entsprechend der grundlegenden Zielsetzung der Neuedition der vorsokratischen Philosophen in der Editionsreihe Traditio Praesocratica, wesentlich die Überlieferungswege und Überlieferungsintentionen der jeweiligen Zeugnisse zu dokumentieren, ist die Edition der ersten milesischen Philosophen des 6. Jh. v.Chr., Thales, Anaximander und Anaximenes, chronologisch angeordnet (von Platon und Aristoteles bis Albertus Magnus). Im ersten Band der Reihe werden die ca. 600 griechischen, lateinischen und syro-arabischen Textzeugnisse zu Thales mit deutscher Übersetzung abgedruckt. Sie sind mit erläuternden Anmerkungen, gegebenenfalls einem kritischen Apparat und vor allem einem (...) Similienapparat versehen, der die jeweiligen Traditionsstränge nachzuvollziehen hilft. In a scholion on Arist. Cael. IV 2.309b29 found in Codex Laurentianus 87.20, the scholiast ascribes to Thales a theory of generation by condensation and rarefaction. This ascription proves to be a construct whose first traces can be found in authors of the early imperial period.

Dealing with and collecting fragments has always been one of the core tasks of scholars of classical antiquity, especially classical philologists. As an examination of the relevant editions and treatises reveals, there is no agreement on what a ‘fragment’ should be. This also has to do with the polysemy of this term, which has gained a new and wider understanding, especially since the Romantic period. In the present contribution it is therefore suggested that the term ‘testimony text’ (‘Zeugnistext’) should be (...) used instead of ‘fragment’. In this way, it is also possible to avoid an editorial pre-determination regarding the authenticity of the testimonies in question. Furthermore, the question of the contextualization of the respective testimony texts will be discussed and suggestions for the practice of their presentation will be made. (shrink)

Der vorliegende Band dient dem Ziel, möglichst sämtliche Zeugnisse über Xenophanes von Kolophon aus antiker und mittelalterlicher Zeit zu versammeln und damit erstmals einen umfassenden Zugang zur antiken und mittelalterlichen Rezeption des bedeutenden vorsokratischen Philosophen zu ermöglichen. Den editorischen Prinzipien der beiden Vorgängerbände folgend werden zum einen die Zeugnisse zusammen mit einer deutschen Übersetzung in chronologischer Abfolge und unter Berücksichtigung der syrisch-arabischen Überlieferung abgedruckt; zum anderen die Themen der Xenophanes-Rezeption in Antike und Mittelalter mithilfe eines sog. Similienapparats erschlossen. Der Similienapparat (...) orientiert über thematisch ähnliche Angaben zu Leben, Lehre und ggfs. Aussprüche des Vorsokratikers, welche jeweils durch einen Begriff knapp charakterisiert werden. Am Ende des Bandes findet sich eine Auflistung sämtlicher Similien mit ihren Fundstellen. Mit Hilfe dieser Auflistung ist schnell zu sehen, unter welchen Kennzeichnungen Xenophanes im Laufe der Überlieferungsgeschichte rezipiert wurde und wo die Kennzeichnungen auftreten und wo nicht. Der Band versammelt die Beiträge einer internationalen Tagung zu zentralen Stationen der Vorsokratiker-Rezeption: Platon, Aristoteles, Autoren der hellenistischen und der Kaiserzeit, der Renaissance und der Gegenwart. Die Untersuchungen zeichnen sich durch einen rezeptionsorientierten Forschungsansatz aus und gehen in vielfältiger Hinsicht den Funktionen nach, die die Bezugnahmen auf die Vorsokratiker im jeweils untersuchten Rezeptionskontext erfüllen. Sie fragen: Welche Haltung zum rezipierten Text zeigt sich im rezipierenden Text? Dient er polemischer Abgrenzung oder vielmehr der Bekräftigung eigener Auffassungen im Rekurs auf die Autorität,der (...) Alten‘? Inwieweit lässt der rezipierende Text das Bemühen um eine unvoreingenommene, sachlich-objektive Darstellung erkennen? Konstruieren die rezipierenden Texte eine Rezeptions- oder Sukzessionslinie und wie ordnen sie sich selbst gegebenenfalls in diese ein? Wird hierbei der hermeneutische Prozess der Rezeption reflektiert oder thematisiert? Mit der Untersuchung dieser und ähnlicher Fragen greift der Band einen Forschungsansatz auf, der mit Bezug auf die Vorsokratiker ganz wesentlich von Georg Wöhrle gefördert wurde; ihm ist der Band als Festschrift gewidmet. Gemessen an Bedeutung, Rang und Wirkung steht die Rechtsphilosophie Hegels heute neben den Politiken von Platon und Aristoteles, dem Leviathan von Hobbes und dem Contrat social von Rousseau.Hegels "Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts" zählen zu den bedeutendsten Werken der neuzeitlichen Rechts- und Staatsphilosophie. In ihnen entwirft er teils unter Rückgriff auf das frühere ›Naturrecht‹, teils im Blick auf die politische und rechtliche Lage nach der Französischen Revolution und zu Beginn der Restaurationsepoche eine Philosophie des objektiven Geistes. Seit ihrer Erstveröffentlichung im (...) Winter 1820/21 sind die Grundlinien Gegenstand heftiger philosophischer und politischer Auseinandersetzungen gewesen. Taking Carnap’s classic exposition as a starting point, this paper develops a pragmatic account of the method of explication, defends it against a range of challenges and proposes a detailed recipe for the practice of explicating. It is then argued that confusions are involved in characterizing explications as definitions, and in advocating precising definitions as an alternative to explications. Explication is better characterized as conceptual re-engineering for theoretical purposes, in contrast to conceptual re-engineering for other purposes and improving exactness for (...) purely practical reasons. This volume distinguishes between two main traditions in the philosophy of science - the aristotelian, with its stress on explanation in terms of purpose and intentionality, and the galilean, which takes causal explanation as primary. It then traces the complex history of these competing traditions as they are manifested in such movements as positivism, idealism, Marxism and contemporary linguistic analysis. Hempels's theory of scientific explanation, the claims of cybernetics the rise of an analytic philosophy of action and the revival of (...) hermenuetics are all discussed. The volume also deals with causal explanation, intentionality and teleological explanation, and explanation in history and the social sciences. The author concludes that explanation of human actions cannot be reduced to simple causality, and discusses the implications of this conclusion for the disciplines of history and sociology. (shrink)

Trust constitutes a fundamental strategy to deal with risks and uncertainty in complex societies. In line with the vast literature stressing the importance of trust in doctor–patient relationships, trust is therefore regularly suggested as a way of dealing with the risks of medical artificial intelligence (AI). Yet, this approach has come under charge from different angles. At least two lines of thought can be distinguished: (1) that trusting AI is conceptually confused, that is, that we cannot trust AI; and (2) (...) that it is also dangerous, that is, that we should not trust AI—particularly if the stakes are as high as they routinely are in medicine. In this paper, we aim to defend a notion of trust in the context of medical AI against both charges. To do so, we highlight the technically mediated intentions manifest in AI systems, rendering trust a conceptually plausible stance for dealing with them. Based on literature from human–robot interactions, psychology and sociology, we then propose a novel model to analyse notions of trust, distinguishing between three aspects: reliability, competence, and intentions. We discuss each aspect and make suggestions regarding how medical AI may become worthy of our trust. (shrink)

Like many of Lukács's early essays, it is a radical critique of bourgeois culture and stems from a specific Central European philosophy of life and tradition of dialectical idealism whose originators include Kant, Hegel, Novalis, Marx, Kierkegaard, Simmel, Weber, and (...) For Descartes, minds were essentially non-extended things. Contemporary cognitive science prides itself on having exorcised the Cartesian ghost from the biological machine. However, it remains committed to the Cartesian vision of the mental as something purely inner. Against the idea that the mind resides solely in the brain, advocates of the situated and embodied nature of cognition have long stressed the importance of dynamic brain-body-environment couplings, the opportunistic exploitation of bodily morphology, the strategic performance of epistemically potent actions, the generation (...) and use of external representations, and the cognitive scaffolding provided by artifacts and social-cultural practices. According to the “extended mind” thesis, a significant portion of human cognition literally extends beyond the brain into the body and its environment. My goal in this book is to clarify the nature and scope of this thesis, and to defend its central insight that cognition is not confined to the boundaries of the biological individual. (shrink)

In moral epistemology, the method of reflective equilibrium is often characterized in terms of intuitions or understood as a method for justifying intuitions. An analysis of reflective equilibrium and current theories of moral intuitions reveals that this picture is problematic. Reflective equilibrium cannot be adequately characterized in terms of intuitions. Although the method presupposes that we have initially credible commitments, it does not presuppose that they are intuitions. Nonetheless, intuitions can enter the process of developing a reflective equilibrium and, if (...) the process is successful, be justified. Since the method of reflective equilibrium does not essentially involve intuitions, it does not constitute a form of intuitionism in any substantial sense. It may be classified as intuitionist only in the minimal sense of not reducing justification to a matter of inference relations alone. (shrink)
