  13. Love Analyzed.Roger E. Lamb (ed.) - 1997 - Westview Press.
Philosophers have turned their attention in recent years to many previously unmined topics, among them love and friendship. In this collection of new essays in philosophical and moral psychology, philosophers turn their analytic tools to a topic perhaps most resistant to reasoned analysis: erotic love. Also included is one previously published paper by Martha Nussbaum.Among the problems discussed are the role that qualities of the beloved play in love, the so-called union theory of love, intentionality and autonomy in love, and (...)

    Infant Crying in Hunter-Gatherer Cultures.Hillary N. Fouts, Michael E. Lamb & Barry S. Hewlett - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (4):462-463.
By synthesizing evolutionary, attachment, and acoustic perspectives, Soltis has provided an innovative model of infant cry acoustics and parental responsiveness. We question some of his hypotheses, however, because of the limited extant data on infant crying among hunter-gatherers. We also question Soltis' distinction between manipulative and honest signaling based upon recent contributions from attachment theory.

Weaning and the Nature of Early Childhood Interactions Among Bofi Foragers in Central Africa.Hillary N. Fouts, Barry S. Hewlett & Michael E. Lamb - 2001 - Human Nature 12 (1):27-46.
Western scholarly literature suggests that (1) weaning is initiated by mothers; (2) weaning takes place within a few days once mothers decide to stop nursing; (3) mothers employ specific techniques to terminate nursing; (4) semi-solid foods (gruels and mashed foods) are essential when weaning; (5) weaning is traumatic for children (it leads to temper tantrums, aggression, etc.); (6) developmental stages in relationships with mothers and others can be demarcated by weaning; and (7) weaning is a process that involves mothers and (...)

    The Phenomenology of Pornography.Clyde E. Willis - 1997 - Law and Philosophy 16 (2):177 - 199.
Most people are familiar with Justice Stewart's now classic statement that while he cannot describe pornography, he certainly knows it when he sees it. We instantly identify with Justice Stewart. Pornography is not difficult to recognize, but it does elude description. This is because traditional attempts at description are attempts that seek to explain at either an abstract or empirical level rather than at the level that accounts for experience in its totality. Justice Stewart's lament represents the need to understand (...)

Matching Patients to an Intervention for Back Pain: Classifying Patients Using a Latent Class Approach.Martine J. Barons, Frances E. Griffiths, Nick Parsons, Anca Alba, Margaret Thorogood, Graham F. Medley & Sarah E. Lamb - 2014 - Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice 20 (4):544-550.
Classification of patients with back pain in order to inform treatments is a long‐standing aim in medicine. We used latent class analysis (LCA) to classify patients with low back pain and investigate whether different classes responded differently to a cognitive behavioural intervention. The objective was to provide additional guidance on the use of cognitive behavioural therapy to both patients and clinicians.

    Birth Management and Perinatal Care.Michael E. Lamb - 1993 - Human Nature 4 (4):323-328.
In the past four decades, obstetric and neonatal care practices have changed dramatically throughout the western world. As a result, humans now confront unprecedented situations for which they have no biological preparation or cultural experience. In these special issues, an integrated view of the evolving practices of birthing and infant care are discussed from a variety of perspectives. Contributors attempt to show how understanding of the biomedical and psychosocial issues can be informed by cross-cultural and cross-species evidence concerning birth management, (...)

Misunderstandings often develop when scientists from different backgrounds use the same words when they mean different things by them. Theorists must therefore choose and define their terms carefully. In addition, proponents of “new” theories need to demonstrate empirically that theirs are more powerful than the existing theories they wish to supplant. Wilson & Sober have not yet done this.
