The recent discussions on the label “historical epistemology” provide us with an interesting example of branding of concepts, ideas and methods. Given this recent interest in the meaning of the expression “historical epistemology”, a detailed analysis of its genealogy and context of emergence may provide some conceptual clarification in a discussion that is often confused and curiously silent on the long tradition of sociology of knowledge. In spite of the growing interest witnessed in the study of the relationship between emotion and language, the determination of the emotional valence of sentences, paragraphs or texts has so far attracted little attention. To bridge this gap, a technique based on the emotional aspect of words is presented. In this preliminary study, we have compared the affective tones of the sentences of four texts as perceived by readers, to the values generated by the words that compose the texts. The (...) results support the psychological reality of the affective tones of linguistic units larger than a word, and the possibility of their evaluation through the lexical information. Such information should be. useful for studying the role of emotional interest on text processing and for the analysis of the natural stories produced by people in reaction to stressful events. Academic debates are so frequent and omnipresent in most disciplines, particularly the social sciences and humanities, it seems obvious that disagreements are bound to occur. The aim of this paper is to show that whereas the agent who perceives his/her contribution as being misunderstood locates the origin of the communication problem on the side of the receiver who "misinterprets" the text, the emitter is in fact also contributing to the possibility of this misunderstanding through the very manner in which his/her (...) text is written. In other words, I propose a symmetric approach to understanding misunderstandings: taking simultaneously into account the position of the reader in the scientific field and the structure of the texts of the writers. The paper thus proposes to complement the sociological analysis of controversies in a scientific field with the close reading of texts, a practice usually found in studies of argumentation, in order to explain the occurrence of misunderstandings. The debate surrounding the charge of "relativism" among sociologists of scientific knowledge provides us with a case study to analyse in detail the argumentative context of misunderstanding. This article uses the methods of citation and network analysis to map the global structure of the intellectual field and its development over time. Through the case study of Mersenne's, Oldenburg's and Darwin's correspondences, we show how looking at letters as a corpus of data can provide a global representation of the evolving conversation going on in the Republic of Letters and in intellectual and scientific fields. Aggregating general correspondences in electronic format offers a global portrait of the evolving composition (...) of the intellectual and scientific scene, its changing foci of interests and the fortune of the intellectual discussions as expressed in cited persons in the letters. Such tools help replace a purely metaphoric use of the term “network” by a visible map of the intellectual relations between people on which well defined calculations of the centrality of the positions of different actors can be made as well as their evolution over time. These techniques provide welcome additions to the tool kit of scholars in an age where the computer and the web offer new ways of mapping and mining the rich store of information contained in intellectual correspondences. ☆ I would like to thank Alain Couillard for the production of the figures and Vincent Larivière and the anonymous referees of the journal for useful comments and suggestions on an earlier version of this paper. On the basis of bibliometric data, this chapter shows that international collaboration in the social sciences and humanities has increased strongly between 1980 and 2014, but that the pattern of exchange has known few structural changes. At the basic level of production capacity and article output, the global field of the SSH is best described as a Euro-American duopoly. At the higher level of co-authorships and citations, however, the field structure tends to be monopolistic: no language can compete with English, (...) no country can rival with the USA. Globalization effects have been relatively weak, and the growth of transnational exchange has reproduced rather than undermined existing hierarchies. Due to its hegemonic position, USA journals remain largely national in their authorship and references, and researchers in the USA are less frequently involved in transnational co-authorship than their colleagues in Europe. For European researchers, transnational collaboration has become somewhat more global in scope, but most of it has remained with the USA and other English speaking countries; China is the only country that has become significantly more important. In European countries the reference pattern indicates that bi-nationalism is the predominant form of transnational exchange: citation hierarchies are dominated by a combination of national and American journals, whereas international and European journals are virtually absent. Patterns of transnational collaboration and exchange thus tend to be structured like star networks with many relations to the center, less frequent relations among semi-central countries, and infrequent or absent relations among semi-peripheral and peripheral countries. La fin du second millénaire a été marquée par un retour en force des différents discours vertueux : celui tenu par les fondamentalistes, isla-mistes et intégristes, par les populistes, par les médias dans les « affaires » de corruption et autres, par les « post-matérialistes » et par les commu-nautariens substantialistes et néo-aristotéliciens. Ce type de discours semble toutefois aujourd’hui perdre en influence, et ce, sans doute, parce qu’une éthique de la responsabilité permet de mieux faire front aux défis contemporains (...) qu’un discours vertueux ou une éthique de la vertu.The end of the second millennium was marked by the return in force of various « virtuous » discourses : that of the fundamentalists, Islamists and integrists, that of the populists, that of the mass media in the cases of corruption, that of the « post-materialists » and that of the neo-Aristotelian communitarians. However, this kind of discourse seems to lose a part of its influence at present probably because an ethics of responsibility allows to respond better to the contemporary challenges than a « virtuous » discourse or an ethics of virtue. Cet article tente de démontrer que l’un des plus grands défis qui se posent aux conseillers en éthique organisationnelle est l’élaboration d’un projet d’éthique des affaires qui soit assez convaincant pour persuader les entrepreneurs et les gestionnaires de l’intérêt de l’intégrer à la culture de leur entreprise. Un authentique projet d’éthique des affaires devrait être en mesure de faire comprendre aux entrepreneurs que le questionnement sur le sens des valeurs qui guident leurs organisations ne peut plus être différé : la (...) conjoncture contemporaine y est favorable et le contexte politique actuel l’exige. Il ne s’agit cependant plus de concevoir l’éthique comme une simple technique de gestion de l’image corporative, mais d’en intégrer les valeurs à la culture « managériale », à la « culture vécue » des organisations. Cet article se veut une illustration de nos recherches sur les scandales et la production de connaissance concernant les vulnérabilités organisationnelles. Il présente un segment des résultats de l’analyse découlant de la recherche exploratoire faite au sein de la nouvelle administration municipale de la Ville de Laval. Cette recherche voulait valider l’utilité des diagnostics des risques éthiques pour les organisations qui tentent de se sortir de la tourmente d’un scandale. Notre chantier de recherche sur la gestion des risques éthiques dans (...) les organisations publiques a été développé pour pallier les limites du champ d’intervention traditionnel de l’éthique appliquée, c’est-à-dire une éthique purement individuelle qui se limite trop souvent à mettre en doute la responsabilité professionnelle des acteurs et faire la promotion de la stricte compétence éthique des acteurs. Nous embrassons ici plutôt une démarche de recherche orientée vers une éthique dite institutionnelle, c’est-à-dire une éthique qui invite à remettre en question les actions individuelles et collectives en les mettant en contexte dans les situations d’actions. L’éthique institutionnelle qui est sous-jacente à l’approche défendue dans ce texte nous amène à réfléchir tant sur la qualité des conduites professionnelles que sur les facteurs qui, dans l’environnement du travail, ont une incidence négative sur la qualité des conduites. Le but de cet article est de démontrer que la recherche sur l’éthique dans les services publics ne peut plus se faire en vase clos autour de l’analyse des valeurs éthiques et la résolution des dilemmes éthiques, elle doit plutôt s’ouvrir à des analyses plus systémiques en jetant un regard analytique tant sur le cadre normatif, les instances régulatoires, la culture organisationnelle, le design institutionnel et les processus de gestion ; tout cela pour mieux saisir toutes les dimensions institutionnelles qui influencent la qualité des conduites des acteurs organisationnels. Un calcul logique, au sens large, est une méthode de résolution appliquée au traitement d'une structure propositionnelle. Les propositions constituant cette structure peuvent aussi bien être des expressions d'une langue naturelle (comme le français) que des expressions d'un langage formalisé (comme l'arithmétique), liées entre elles par une dépendance de nature fonctionnelle. Cet ouvrage constitue une introduction à deux outils de calcul en logique du premier ordre, soit le calcul en arbres de consistance et le calcul en déduction naturelle. La première (...) partie, centrée sur la notion de structure propositionnelle, expose les concepts, les objets et les méthodes propres à la logique propositionnelle. Dans la deuxième partie, la logique propositionnelle est étendue à la logique prédicative au moyen de la quantification et de concepts caractéristiques d'un langage du premier ordre. Les deux outils de calcul sont ensuite enrichis de manière à pouvoir traiter des fonctions propositionnelles, soit des prédicats du premier ordre.De nombreux exemples et exercices, accompagnés de leurs solutions, aideront l'étudiant à progresser vers des calculs toujours plus complexes et à raffiner ses méthodes de calcul logique. Christoph Jäger has argued that Dretske’s information-based account of knowledge is committed to both knowledge and information closure under known entailment. However, in a reply to Jäger, Dretske defended his view on the basis of a discrepancy between the relation of information and the relation of logical implication. This paper shares Jäger’s criticism that Dretske’s externalist notion of information implies closure, but provides an analysis based on different grounds. By means of a distinction between two perspectives, the mathematical perspective and (...) the epistemological perspective, I present, in the former, a notion of logical implication that is compatible with the notion of information in the mathematical theory of information, and I show how, in the latter, Dretske’s logical reading of the closure principle is incompatible with his information-theoretic epistemological framework. The interpretation of quantum mechanics is an area of increasing interest to many working physicists. In particular, interest has come from those involved in quantum computing and information theory, as there has always been a strong foundational element in this field. This paper introduces one interpretation of quantum mechanics, a modern ‘many-worlds’ theory, from the perspective of quantum computation. Reasons for seeking to interpret quantum mechanics are discussed, then the specific ‘neo-Everettian’ theory is introduced and its claim as the best (...) available interpretation defended. The main objections to the interpretation, including the so-called “problem of probability” are shown to fail. The local nature of the interpretation is demonstrated, and the implications of this both for the interpretation and for quantum mechanics more generally are discussed. Finally, the consequences of the theory for quantum computation are investigated, and common objections to using many worlds to describe quantum computing are answered. We find that using this particular many-worlds theory as a physical foundation for quantum computation gives several distinct advantages over other interpretations, and over not interpreting quantum theory at all.
