The paper focuses on automation of signal processing, which also considers analysis of biomedical data, such as EEG. The results of the study prove that this enables a better understanding of signal changes and makes it possible to address some specific disturbances. It also makes it possible to describe the relevant changes in signals mathematically and helps to create markers of various brain disorders. This paper presents the study at the initial stage and focuses on the mathematical markers of concentration (...)

    Diagnostic Wannabes.Jennifer Radden - 2023 - Philosophy Psychiatry and Psychology 30 (3):279-281.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Diagnostic WannabesJennifer Radden, PhD (bio)Saunders explores challenges for the clinician faced with self-styled sufferers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and fibromyalgia. The diagnostic system was not meant to be used as “a scaffold for identity,” she points out. Yet wannabe patients now step into the clinic wielding self-proclaimed diagnoses as social identities. Saunders explains the context where such (...)

Diagnostic staging and stratification in psychiatry and oncology: clarifying their conceptual, epistemological and ethical implications.Julia Tinland, Christophe Gauld, Pierre Sujobert & Élodie Giroux - forthcoming - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy:1-15.
Staging and stratification are two diagnostic approaches that have introduced a more dynamic outlook on the development of diseases, thus participating in blurring the line between the normal and the pathological. First, diagnostic staging, aiming to capture how diseases evolve in time and/or space through identifiable and gradually more severe stages, may be said to lean on an underlying assumption of “temporal determinism”. Stratification, on the other hand, allows for the identification of various prognostic or predictive subgroups based (...)

Diagnostic and prognostic significance of individualized medicine for acute myeloid leukemia with normal karyotype in patients younger than 65 years: a systematic review and meta-analysis with regard to FLT3-ITD. [REVIEW]Matthias Port, Miriam Böttcher, Felicitas Thol, Nicole Trachte, Jürgen Wasem, Arnold Ganser, Laura Pouryamout & Anja Neumann - 2013 - Ethik in der Medizin 25 (3):183-193.

Research on leukaemia cells surplus to diagnostic needs in children.M. M. Reid - 1994 - Journal of Medical Ethics 20 (4):225-228.
The ability to improve diagnosis and refine prognosis in children with acute leukaemia is improving steadily. A growing number of tests can and are being performed on leukaemic cells. These include surface-marker analysis, DNA content, cytogenetics and studies of gene rearrangements. Increasingly large bone-marrow samples, now usually obtained under general anaesthesia, are required to make secure diagnoses. Ethical issues arise from three major areas. 1) Current research on leukaemia cells requested by the Medical Research Council is considered by local (...)

We show that the structure (C,+,·) has no proper non locally modular reducts which contain +. In other words, if $X \subset \mathbf{C}^n$ is constructible and not definable in the module structure (C,+,λ a ) a ∈ C (where λ a denotes multiplication by a) then multiplication is definable in (C,+,X).

    Staring Back.Chris Marker - 2007 - MIT Press.
Photographs by one of French cinema's most influential and enigmatic artists. Any new film and any new book by French filmmaker Chris Marker is an event. Marker gave film lovers one of their most memorable experiences with La Jetée —a time-travel montage set after a nuclear war that inspired Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys. His still camerawork is not as well known, but Marker has been taking photographs as long as he has been making films. Staring Back presents (...)

Since its inception in the Middle Ages, the university classroom can be characterized by students gathered around a sage who imparts his or her knowledge. However, the effective classroom of today looks vastly different: First-year engineering students not only learn basic engineering principles, but are also guided to consider their own inner values and motivations as they design and build adaptive devices for people with disabilities; students in a large chemistry lecture work animatedly together in small groups on inquiry-based activities (...)

Political Theory is a broad field, comprising subjects as varied as conceptual analysis, positive political theory, political philosophy, and the history of normative political thought. The present edited volume includes contributions to all of these fields: Contested concepts such as extremism or freedom are discussed, issues such as expertocracy, dirty hands, global poverty and inequality are tackled from a normative perspective; empirical topics such as the conditions of democratic stability or the relationship between rational action and informational inequalities are illuminated (...)

The Borel Complexity of Isomorphism for Theories with Many Types.David Marker - 2007 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 48 (1):93-97.
During the Notre Dame workshop on Vaught's Conjecture, Hjorth and Kechris asked which Borel equivalence relations can arise as the isomorphism relation for countable models of a first-order theory. In particular, they asked if the isomorphism relation can be essentially countable but not tame. We show this is not possible if the theory has uncountably many types.

Logarithmic-exponential series.Lou van den Dries, Angus Macintyre & David Marker - 2001 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 111 (1-2):61-113.
We extend the field of Laurent series over the reals in a canonical way to an ordered differential field of “logarithmic-exponential series” , which is equipped with a well behaved exponentiation. We show that the LE-series with derivative 0 are exactly the real constants, and we invert operators to show that each LE-series has a formal integral. We give evidence for the conjecture that the field of LE-series is a universal domain for ordered differential algebra in Hardy fields. We define (...)

1 Evidence-based policy requires researchers to provide the answers to ecological questions that are of interest to policy makers. To find out what those questions are in the UK, representatives from 28 organizations involved in policy, together with scientists from 10 academic institutions, were asked to generate a list of questions from their organizations. 2 During a 2-day workshop the initial list of 1003 questions generated from consulting at least 654 policy makers and academics was used as a basis for (...)
