This article examines whether and how the participation of women in the firm’s board of directors and senior management enhances financial performance. We use the Fama and French (1992, 1993) valuation framework to take the level of risk into consideration, when comparing firm performances, whereas previous studies used either raw stock returns or accounting ratios. Our results indicate that firms operating in complex environments do generate positive and significant abnormal returns when they have a high proportion of women officers. Although (...) the participation of women as directors does not seem to make a difference in this regard, firms with a high proportion of women in both their management and governance systems generate enough value to keep up with normal stock-market returns. These findings tend to support the policies currently being discussed or implemented in some countries and organizations to foster the advancement of women in business. (shrink)

This study relies on environmental stewardship, a stakeholder-enlarged view of stewardship theory, and institutional theory to analyze the relationship between CEO compensation and firms’ environmental commitment in a worldwide sample of 520 large listed firms. Our findings show that environment friendly firms pay their CEOs less total compensation and rely less on incentive-based compensation than environment careless firms. This negative relationship is stronger in institutional contexts where national environmental regulations are weaker. Our findings have important theoretical meaning and practical implications. (...) Results show that CEOs do not necessarily act opportunistically; rather some of them may be willing to act as stewards of the natural environment and accept a lower, less incentive-based compensation from environment friendly firms. This study also provides evidence of the important influence of the institutional context in setting-up CEO compensation as the relationship is stronger when national environmental regulations are weaker. Our findings question the universal validity of agency theory in explaining CEO compensation. Compensation based on pecuniary incentives might be less indicated to motivate CEOs who feel rewarded by playing a stewardship role for environment friendly firms. When designing compensation for CEOs, compensation committees and external compensation advisors should consider psychological and institutional factors that might affect CEO motivation. (shrink)

The inconclusiveness of previous research on the association between gender diverse boards and corporate social performance has led us to revisit the question in light of stakeholder management and institutional theories. Given that corporate social responsibility is a multidimensional concept, we test the influence of GDB on various groups of stakeholders. By considering the interaction between stakeholders’ power and directors’ personal motivations toward the prioritization of stakeholders’ claims, we find that GDB are positively related to CSR dimensions that are related (...) to less powerful stakeholders such as the environment, contractors, and the community. However, GDB do not appear to have a significant impact on CSR dimensions that are associated with stakeholders who benefit from more institutionalized power, such as employees and customers. This study investigates the effect of country-level emancipative forces on corporate gender diversity around the world. Based on Welzel’s theory of emancipation, we develop an emancipatory framework of board gender diversity that explains how action resources, emancipative values and civic entitlements enable, motivate and encourage women to take leadership roles on corporate boards. Using a sample of 6390 firms operating in 30 countries around the world, our results show positive single and combined effects of the framework components on board gender (...) diversity. Our research adds to the existing literature in a twofold manner. First, our integrated framework offers a more encompassing, complete and theoretically richer picture of the key drivers of board gender diversity. Second, by testing the framework empirically, we extend the evidence on national drivers of board gender diversity. (shrink)

Companies that are serious about corporate governance and business ethics are turning their attention to gender diversity at the most senior levels of business . Board gender diversity has been the subject of several studies carried out by international organizations such as Catalyst , the World Economic Forum , and the European Board Diversity Analysis . They all lead to reports confirming the overall relatively low proportion of women on boards and the slow pace at which more women are being (...) appointed. Furthermore, the proportion of women on corporate boards varies much across countries. Based on institutional theory, this study hypothesizes and tests whether this variation can be attributed to differences in cultural settings across countries. Our analysis of the representation of women on boards for 32 countries during 2010 reveals that two cultural characteristics are indeed associated with the observed differences. We use the cultural dimensions proposed by Hofstede to measure this construct. Results show that countries which have the greatest tolerance for inequalities in the distribution of power and those that tend to value the role of men generally exhibit lower representations of women on boards. This study assesses the causal relationship between corporate social performance (CSP) and financial performance (FP). We perform our empirical analyses on a sample of 179 publicly held Canadian firms and use the measures of CSP provided by Canadian Social Investment Database for the years 2004 and 2005. Using the “Granger causality” approach, we find no significant relationship between a composite measure of a firm’s CSP and FP, except for market returns. However, using individual measures of CSP, we find a robust (...) significant negative impact of the environmental dimension of CSP and three measures of FP, namely return on assets, return on equity, and market returns. This latter finding is consistent, at least in the short run, with the trade-off hypothesis and, in part, with the negative synergy hypothesis which states that socially responsible firms experience lower profits and reduced shareholder wealth, which in turn limits the socially responsible investments. This study investigates the engagement of family firms in corporate social responsibility. We first compare their corporate social performance to non-family firms. Then, following recent evidence on the heterogeneity of family firms, we examine two factors that may influence CSP within family firms: the level of family control and the governance orientation of the country in which they operate. This research is based on a theoretical framework which considers both agency and socioemotional wealth influences on family firms CSR engagements. Overall, (...) we find that family firms exhibit lower CSP than non-family firms. But when focusing on family firms, our analyses show a curvilinear relationship between family control and CSP. At lower levels of control, family owners invest more in social initiatives to protect their SEW. Beyond a threshold level of control that we estimate at 36 % in our sample, economic considerations prevail over SEW and social performance starts decreasing. We also find that family firms operating in stakeholder-oriented countries are more attentive to social concerns than those operating in more shareholder-oriented countries. (shrink)

This article proposes and empirically tests a theoretical framework incorporating Reidenbach and Robin’s (J Bus Ethics 10(4):273–284, 1991 ) conceptual model of corporate moral development. The framework is used to examine the relation between governance and business ethics, as proxied by diversity management (DM), and financial reporting quality, as proxied by the magnitude of earnings management (EM). The level of DM and governance quality are measured in accordance with the ratings of Jantzi Research (JR), a leading provider of social and (...) governance research for institutional investors. This DM score is part of an index developed by JR that investment managers use to integrate DM criteria into their investment decisions. As expected, a negative relation between corporate DM development and financial reporting quality is found while controlling for other factors known in the literatures on governance and accounting choices to affect earnings quality. Despite some caveats presented in conclusion, this study contributes to the ethics, governance, and financial reporting literatures by studying the dynamics between governance and ethics in the prevention of EM. ArgumentAfter having measured the velocity of the nervous impulse in the 1850s, Helmholtz began doing research on the temporal dimensions of visual perception. Experiments dealing with the velocity of propagation in nerves were carried out occasionally for some fifteen years until their final publication in 1871. Although the temporal dimension of perception seems to have interested Helmholtz less than problems of geometry and space, his experiments on the time of perception were technically rather subtle and seminal, especially compared with experiments (...) performed by his contemporaries, such as Sigmund Exner, William James, Rudolf Hermann Lotze, Ernst Mach, Wilhelm Volkmann, and Wilhelm Wundt. Helmholtz’s conception of the temporal aspects of perception reflects the continuity that holds between psychophysiological research and the Kantian philosophical background. (shrink)

In the latest years of the 6th/12th century, two chains of affiliation of a distinctive kind make their appearance in the Muslim world, in the East on one hand, and in the West on the other: the first is referred to in the sources as silsilat al-muṣāfaḥa, the second as silsilat al-mushābaka. These ‘chains’, mentioned mostly in works pertaining to the genre of prosopographic literature in the largest sense, experienced a broad and rapid expansion throughout the dār al-islām. They are (...) linked to a specific ritual aimed at perpetuating, across generations, a physical contact with the Prophet. Novel forms of matter, such as states made of gluons (glueballs), multiquark mesons or baryons and hybrid mesons are predicted by low energy QCD, for which several candidates have recently been identified. Searching for such exotic states of matter and studying their production and decay properties in detail has become a flourishing field at the experimental facilities now available or being built - e.g. BESIII in Beijing, BELLE II at SuperKEKB, GlueX at Jefferson Lab, PANDA at FAIR, J-PARC and in (...) the upgraded LHC experiments, in particular LHCb. A modern primer in the field is required so as to both revive and update the teaching of a new generation of researchers in the field of QCD. These lectures on hadron spectroscopy are intended for Master and PhD students and have been originally developed for a course delivered at the Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. They are phenomenologically oriented and intended as complementary material for basic courses in particle and nuclear physics. The book describes the spectra of light and heavy mesons and baryons, and introduces the fundamental properties based on symmetries. Further, it derives multiplet structures, mixing angle, decay coupling constants, magnetic moments of baryons, and predictions for multiquark states and compares these with suitable experimental data. Basic methods of calculating decay angular distributions and determining masses and widths of resonances are also presented. The appendices provide students and newcomers to the field with the necessary background information, and include a set of problems and solutions. (shrink)

Cet ouvrage présente les fondements philosophiques et scientifiques du développement actuel des biotechnologies. Ce développement se fonde, philosophiquement, sur l'idée de la réalisation du possible largement commentée dans la tradition philosophique. Il est montré en outre comment le bricolage biotechnologique résulte de propriétés nouvellement reconnues de l'évolution biologique elle-même, qui procède selon le principe du bricolage moléculaire exposé par François Jacob. L'intimité des relations entre biotechnologie et évolution biologique, qui reste mal comprise en général, est ici détaillée à un niveau (...) fondamental, celui de la biologique moléculaire des trente dernières années et des techniques comme l'ADN recombinant et plus récemment l'évolution dirigée et les diverses formes de clonage. Les questions d'éthique et de politique scientifique liées aux biotechnologies sont également examinées. Les réflexions sur le thème biologie et société et la responsabilité scientifique exprimées depuis une trentaine d'années sont présentées en même temps que les divers cadres et actions politiques et institutionnels des biotechnologies. L'ouvrage, qui insiste sur l'extraordinaire malléabilité des structures biologiques, est aussi bien un plaidoyer pour l'exploration maîtrisée des possibles qu'un argumentaire pour une anthropologie philosophique de l'action humaine. La première constitue une introduction à l'épistémologie des sciences en général, articulée autour de notions telles que " vérité ", " problème ", " champ ", " paradigme ", etc. Les auteurs de référence y sont Gaston Bachelard, Pierre Bourdieu, Karl Popper, Michel Meyer. Il s'agit en gros de montrer comment l'activité scientifique secrète ses propres modes d'énonciation de vérités, contribuant ainsi à récuser tout projet (...) de relativisme radical. La seconde partie consiste en une application de ces préceptes aux sciences du social, notamment à la sociologie. Y sont examinées les oppositions paradigmatiques classiques, ainsi que celles de l'explication à la compréhension, de la démarche qualitative à la démarche quantitative, etc. Le souci didactique domine dans l'écriture et dans la réduction des références à l'indispensable. Faut-il définir la phénoménologie comme une discipline transcendantale? Si toute phénoménologie consiste en un " dire les phénomènes " (legein ta phainomena) qui les approche et les décrit tels qu'en eux-mêmes, le logos phénoménologique doit-il être compris exclusivement - ou même principalement - en référence à la logique mathématique issue de Frege? Enfin, qu'en est-il de la phénoménologie dans son rapport à la métaphysique, non pas au sens " scolaire " du terme, mais dans celui - que lui ont conféré (...) Nietzsche, Bergson et Heidegger - d'une configuration historique unitaire de la pensée occidentale dans son ensemble? Ces trois questions parcourent ce recueil d'études et lui confèrent sa cohésion interne. À travers elles, il s'agit de se frayer un chemin vers la question de l'apparaître en tant que tel, qu'Héraclite a placée au ceux du questionnement de la " philosophie " naissante, et que l'entreprise phénoménologique ne peut manquer de soulever et, à son tour, de perpétuer. Tout au long des années trente, un groupe de jeunes intellectuels non conformistes réunis dans le mouvement " Ordre Nouveau " ont lancé dans le débat une pensée radicalement nouvelle en rupture avec les idées dominantes du collectivisme conquérant et du capitalisme traditionnel. Ils avaient nom Denis de Rougemont, Robert Aron, Arnaud Dandieu, Daniel-Rops, Emmanuel Mounier. Alexandre Marc, philosophe jeté hors de sa Russie natale par la victoire des bolcheviques, était leur fédérateur et animateur principal.0De ces idées, il fit une (...) doctrine, le fédéralisme personnaliste, à l'approfondissement et à la diffusion de laquelle il consacra toute sa vie. On pourrait la croire aujourd'hui oubliée. Et pourtant, c'est en elle qu'ont germé des réalisations et des propositions, révolutionnaires en ces temps et très présentes dans les débats actuels : fédéralisme européen, crise de civilisation, allocation universelle, subsidiarité et régionalisme, etc.0Il en est jusqu'à la pensée dialectique du " en même temps ", chère au macronisme, qui apparaît comme une transposition hasardeuse de la dialectique inclusive, théorisée par Alexandre Marc. Sa disparition, voilà vingt ans, appelle une évaluation de cette doctrine et une tentative d'appréciation critique de sa pertinence. Ce livre s'efforce d'illustrer cette ambition au travers des réflexions des auteurs sur certains de ses aspects névralgiques comme le personnalisme, la crise, la dialectique ou l'action politique.0Certains ont été des élèves et des proches collaborateurs d'Alexandre Marc ; d'autres ne l'ont connu qu'au travers de ses écrits ou de ses conférences. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that aesthetics had its place in Fichte’s early system of the WL, and that due to contingent circumstances he did not have the chance to expound it. But we can reconstruct the main lines of what his aesthetics would have looked like if we pay attention to the article sent to Schiller in 1795 on the “spirit” and the “letter” in philosophy, completing it with the courses he gave in the preceding months (...) on that topic and with other sources. We discover not only that aesthetics is an important part of the philosophical system but that art stands close the act of philosophising itself. In fact, both the philosopher and the artist draw from the same original source: “spirit” as defined in Kant’s third Critique. For the philosopher as well as for the artist the central faculty is then “imagination”, an imagination that relies on “feeling”. In the end Fichte sketches an aesthetics based on the creative genius of the artist, leaving little room for the faculty of judgment and for taste, that is: the receptive attitude toward beauty, that play a prominent role in Kant’s aesthetics. A la suite d'Augustin, des philosophies aussi différentes que celles de Bergson, Husserl ou Heidegger n'hésitent pas à le soutenir : le temps n'est pas d'abord dans les choses, mais il provient, plus originairement, des actes, des attitudes ou des comportements par lesquels un sujet (ou, éventuellement, un Dasein) s'attend ou se souvient, anticipe des possibles ou décide de lui-même, c'est-à-dire temporalise dans leur unité indissoluble l'avenir, le passé et le présent. C'est (...) cette thèse que le présent ouvrage s'efforce de discuter et de soumettre à un examen critique. Quelle compréhension du temps au cours de la métaphysique a rendu possible sa " subjectivation "? N'est-ce pas d'abord une certaine saisie du phénomène temporel comme phénomène intratemporel? Et cette interprétation, dont il devient possible d'entreprendre une généalogie à la lumière des analyses de Platon, Aristote et Augustin, ne prescrit-elle pas son cadre conceptuel à la métaphysique elle-même? Mais, si la temporalité n'est pas pensable à l'aune de la subjectivité métaphysique (dont le Dasein, à certains égards du moins, constitue l'ultime figure), n'est-il pas requis, pour tenter d'en produire une phénoménologie, de changer de fil conducteur? C'est en ce point que le présent ouvrage rejoint le projet de L'événement et le monde, celui d'une herméneutique événementiale de l'humain, dont il constitue à la fois l'approfondissement et l'achèvement. In this introductory paper, I try to give an overview of the concept of normativity in its philosophical history and its contemporary interpretations and uses in different fields. From philosophy of logic and mathematics to philosophy of language and mind, and to philosophy of medicine and care, normativity is found as a key concept pointing at the possibility of scientific and technical progress and improvement of human life in the interaction between the individual and his environment.

William of Ockham (c.1287-1347) is known to be one of the major figures of the late Middle Ages. The scope and significance of his doctrine of human thought, however, has been a controversial issue among scholars in the last decade, and this book presents a full discussion of recent developments. Claude Panaccio proposes a richly documented and entirely original reinterpretation of Ockham's theory of concepts as a coherent blend of representationalism, conceptual atomism, and non reductionist nominalism, stressing in the (...) process its special interest for current discussions in philosophy of mind and cognitive sciences. Le développement est devenu une préoccupation majeure depuis un demi-siècle. L'idée dominante - confiant à l'État l'impulsion décisive et à la nation une souveraineté ombrageuse - a basculé au profit de la loi du marché et de l'ouverture internationale. Néo-keynésienne ou néo-classique, l'analyse du développement a reçu quatre critiques majeures tenant à la causalité, au processus, à la rationalité et au fonctionnement. Les limites d'une action qui laisse les deux tiers de l'humanité en marge du processus, suscitent l'émergence de nouveaux (...) critères d'équité, de gouvernance, d'éthique ou d'écologie. Les atouts de la communauté francophone s'inscrivent dans une connaissance empirique de cette diversité, elle transparaît dans ses approches universitaites, mais elle manque encore d'un ancrage suffisant pour donner à l'ensemble une vigueur économique de référence et une solidarité effective.Development has been a major topic for the last fifty years. The dominant idea – letting the State provide the decisive impulse for progress and the Nation a prickly form of sovereignty – has shifted in favour of market forces and the international context. Both neo-Keynesian and neo-classical forms of analysis were criticized on four levels : causality, process, rationality and functioning. The limits of a policy which excludes two thirds of humanity have led to new criteria of equity, ethics, governance and ecology arising. The French speaking community has the advantage of possessing good empirical knowledge of diversity which can be seen in the rich and varied approaches of researchers. However this knowledge is not sufficiently anchored to foster strong economic development and effective solidarity in the whole community. (shrink)
