    Temporalidad y finitud.Fernando Gilabert Bello - 2024 - Claridades.

The Moral Authority of Nature.Lorraine Daston & Fernando Vidal (eds.) - 2003 - Chicago: University of Chicago Press.
For thousands of years, people have used nature to justify their political, moral, and social judgments. Such appeals to the moral authority of nature are still very much with us today, as heated debates over genetically modified organisms and human cloning testify. _The Moral Authority of Nature_ offers a wide-ranging account of how people have used nature to think about what counts as good, beautiful, just, or valuable. The eighteen essays cover a diverse array of topics, including the connection of (...)

Music induces universal emotion-related psychophysiological responses: comparing Canadian listeners to Congolese Pygmies.Hauke Egermann, Nathalie Fernando, Lorraine Chuen & Stephen McAdams - 2014 - Frontiers in Psychology 5:116059.
Subjective and psychophysiological emotional responses to music from two different cultures were compared within these two cultures. Two identical experiments were conducted: the first in the Congolese rainforest with an isolated population of Mebenzélé Pygmies without any exposure to Western music and culture, the second with a group of Western music listeners, with no experience with Congolese music. Forty Pygmies and 40 Canadians listened in pairs to 19 music excerpts of 29–99 s in duration in random order (eight from the (...)

    Interpretability in Robinson's Q.Fernando Ferreira & Gilda Ferreira - 2013 - Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 19 (3):289-317.
Edward Nelson published in 1986 a book defending an extreme formalist view of mathematics according to which there is animpassable barrierin the totality of exponentiation. On the positive side, Nelson embarks on a program of investigating how much mathematics can be interpreted in Raphael Robinson's theory of arithmetic. In the shadow of this program, some very nice logical investigations and results were produced by a number of people, not only regarding what can be interpreted inbut also what cannot be so (...)

  7. Good deeds and hard knocks: The effect of past suffering on praise for moral behavior.Philip Robbins, Fernando Alvear & Paul Litton - 2021 - Journal of Experimental Social Psychology 97.
Are judgments of praise for moral behavior modulated by knowledge of an agent's past suffering at the hands of others, and if so, in what direction? Drawing on multiple lines of research in experimental social psychology, we identify three hypotheses about the psychology of praise — typecasting, handicapping, and non-historicism — each of which supports a different answer to the question above. Typecasting predicts that information about past suffering will augment perceived patiency and thereby diminish perceived agency, making altruistic actions (...)

The present article presents brief notes on the "new thought" of the German philosopher Franz Rosenzweig, in the work The Star of Redemption, with the exposure of reason and its totalitarian and violent vocation, which, since Antiquity until Modernity, was based on the tireless search for knowledge of the All, in its essence, with the formulation of concepts, in a closed experience. In contrast, the philosopher from Kassel points out his proposal for a new philosophical system, with a vocabulary similar (...)

Building on a functionalist framework for decision-making in legal translation, a holistic approach to quality is presented in order to respond to the specificities of this field and overcome the shortcomings of general models of translation quality evaluation. The proposed approach connects legal, contextual, macrotextual and microtextual variables for the definition of the translation adequacy strategy, which guides problem-solving and the rest of the translation process. The same parameters remain traceable between the translation brief and the translation product both in (...)

From the classic Frankenstein of 1931 to Matrix, which offers a version of the philosophical fable of the brain in a vat and on to Self/less, in which the consciousness of a dying tycoon is transferred to a younger man’s body, cinema has variously explored the relationship between personhood and the body by means of fictions concerning the brain and its contents.1 From the crude disembodied brains of 1950s B-movies to the neuroimaging visuals of 21st-century cyberpunk, these films localize individuality (...)

On a Supposed Dogma of Speech Perception Research: A Response to Appelbaum.Fernando Orphão de Carvalho - 2009 - Principia: An International Journal of Epistemology 13 (1):93-106.
. In this paper we purport to qualify the claim, advanced by Appelbaum that speech perception research, in the last 70 years or so, has endorsed a view on the nature of speech for which no evidence can be adduced and which has resisted falsification through active ad hoc “theoretical repair” carried by speech scientists. We show that the author’s qualms on the putative dogmatic status of speech research are utterly unwarranted, if not misconstrued as a whole. On more general (...)

    Existential graphs and proofs of pragmaticism.Fernando Zalamea & Jaime Nubiola - 2011 - Semiotica 2011 (186):421-439.
We show how Peirce's architectonics folds on itself and finds local consequences that correspond to the major global hypotheses of the system. In particular, we study how the pragmaticist maxim can be technically represented in Peirce's existential graphs, well-suited to reveal an underlying continuity in logical operations, and can provide suggestive philosophical analogies. Further, using the existential graphs, we formalize — and prove one direction of — a “local proof of pragmaticism,” trying thus to explain the prominent place that existential (...)

  43. On the Parmenidean misconception.Fernando Ferreira - 1999 - History of Philosophy & Logical Analysis 2.
This paper makes two main claims. Firstly, it imputes to Parmenides a misconception rooted in an erroneous theory of the meaning of sentences. In Parmenides' hands, this theory took the extreme form not only of being unable to make sense of falsehoods, but also of being unable to make sense of true negative predications. Secondly, it claims that Plato's double theory of "limited mixing" plus "negation as otherness" - as expounded in the Sophist - is a theory still within the (...)

As regards the issue of futura contingentia, Aquinas's interpretation turns on a phrase that has sometimes been dismissed as irrelevant or even confused: "...non tamen haec vel illa determinatae...". It is shown that this clause is in complete conformity with Aquinas's interpretation of the principles of non-contradiction and of excluded middle. According to this interpretation the meaning of propositional negation derives from the first two principles considered collectively but is not presupposed by them. With respect to time-relative modalities this implies (...)

It is possible today to observe in hindsight the epistemological landscape of the twentieth century, and the work of Albert Lautman in mathematical philosophy appears as a profound turning point, opening to a true under- standing of creativity in mathematics and its relation with the real. Little understood in its time or even today, Lautman’s work explores the difficult but exciting intersection where modern mathematics, advanced mathe- matical invention, the structural or unitary relations of mathematical knowledge and, finally, the metaphysical (...)
