    Lumière et Nuit, Féminin et Masculin chez Parménide d’Elée : quelques remarques.Gérard Journée - 2012 - Phronesis 57 (4):289-318.
Abstract The great german Scholar, Eduard Zeller, suggested that the reference to male and female in Parmenides B12.5-6 was probably an allusion to the physical principles of `mortal opinion': Night and Light. This suggestion has been rejected by some scholars because such an association would lead us to admit that, in B12, male was associated with Night and female with Light, a theory which would be at odds with the supposed misogyny of Greek culture. However, Parmenides' account of `mortal (...)

Fast Vacuum Fluctuations and the Emergence of Quantum Mechanics.Gerard ’T. Hooft - 2021 - Foundations of Physics 51 (3):1-24.
Fast moving classical variables can generate quantum mechanical behavior. We demonstrate how this can happen in a model. The key point is that in classically evolving systems one can still define a conserved quantum energy. For the fast variables, the energy levels are far separated, such that one may assume these variables to stay in their ground state. This forces them to be entangled, so that, consequently, the slow variables are entangled as well. The fast variables could be the vacuum (...)

"This is essential reading for anyone who wants to find common ground between the best of American semiotics and better-known European theories. Extrapolating a Hierarchy of Building Block Systems Towards Future Neural Network Organisms.Gerard Jagers op Akkerhuis - 2001 - Acta Biotheoretica 49 (3):171-189.
It is possible to predict future life forms? In this paper it is argued that the answer to this question may well be positive. As a basis for predictions a rationale is used that is derived from historical data, e.g. from a hierarchical classification that ranks all building block systems, that have evolved so far. This classification is based on specific emergent properties that allow stepwise transitions, from low level building blocks to higher level ones. This paper shows how this (...)

Logics for classes of Boolean monoids.Gerard Allwein, Hilmi Demir & Lee Pike - 2004 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 13 (3):241-266.
This paper presents the algebraic and Kripke modelsoundness and completeness ofa logic over Boolean monoids. An additional axiom added to thelogic will cause the resulting monoid models to be representable as monoidsof relations. A star operator, interpreted as reflexive, transitiveclosure, is conservatively added to the logic. The star operator isa relative modal operator, i.e., one that is defined in terms ofanother modal operator. A further example, relative possibility,of this type of operator is given. A separate axiom, antilogism, added to the logic (...)

Deus sive Justitia. Note sur « Critique de la violence ».Gérard Bensussan - 2010 - Les Cahiers Philosophiques de Strasbourg 27:15-22.

'On Going Up in the World': Nation, Region and the Land Elevation Debate in Sweden.Christer Nordlund - 2001 - Annals of Science 58 (1):17-50.
The aim of the article is to analyse the relationship between Quaternary geology, the idea of land elevation, nationalism and regionalism in Scandinavia, with special regard to the contribution of Swedish geologists at the end of the nineteenth century. From a scientific point of view, the idea of land elevation was connected to the acceptance of the glaciation theory and the elevation theory of Thomas F. Jamieson, but analysed in a wider cultural context it is possible to understand both the (...)

Ontological and ethical implications of direct nuclear reprogramming.Gerard Magill & William B. Neaves - 2009 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 19 (1):pp. 23-32.
Scientific breakthroughs rarely yield the potential to engage a foundational ethical question. Recent studies on direct reprogramming of human skin cells reported by the Yamanaka lab in Japan and the Thomson lab in Wisconsin suggest that scientists may have crossed both a scientific and an ethical threshold. The fascinating science of direct nuclear reprogramming highlights empirical data that may clarify the ontological status of cellular activity in the early stages of what could become a human fetus and justify ethical options (...)

    Virtual Black Holes and Space–Time Structure.Gerard ’T. Hooft - 2018 - Foundations of Physics 48 (10):1134-1149.
In the standard formalism of quantum gravity, black holes appear to form statistical distributions of quantum states. Now, however, we can present a theory that yields pure quantum states. It shows how particles entering a black hole can generate firewalls, which however can be removed, replacing them by the ‘footprints’ they produce in the out-going particles. This procedure can preserve the quantum information stored inside and around the black hole. We then focus on a subtle but unavoidable modification of the (...)

The Firewall Transformation for Black Holes and Some of Its Implications.Gerard ’T. Hooft - 2017 - Foundations of Physics 47 (12):1503-1542.
A promising strategy for better understanding space and time at the Planck scale, is outlined and further pursued. It is explained in detail, how black hole unitarity demands the existence of transformations that can remove firewalls. This must then be combined with a continuity condition on the horizon, with antipodal identification as an inevitable consequence. The antipodal identification comes with a \ inversion. We claim to have arrived at ‘new physics’, but rather than string theory, our ‘new physics’ concerns new (...)

Attunement, Deprivation, and Drive.Gerard Kuperus - 2007 - In Christian Lotz & Corinne Painter (eds.), Phenomenology and the Non-Human Animal. Springer. pp. 13--27.
In his lecture course, The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics, Heidegger discusses three different forms of poverty and deprivation. First of all, the poverty in world of the non-human animal, second, the poverty in the being of contemporary Dasein, and, third, the deprivation of world in the fundamental attunement of profound boredom. This essay discusses these three forms of poverty or deprivation, with the goal to offer a preliminary analysis of Heidegger’s distinction between the human and the non-human animal.

The Development of the Role of the Spectator in Kant’s Thinking.Gerard Kuperus - 2010 - Idealistic Studies 40 (1-2):65-82.
In this paper I discuss the development of Kant’s Critical project in the pre-critical writings. I am particularly focusing upon the problems that Kant encounters in developing the idea of a transcendental subject. This helps us to understand the radical nature of Kant’s project in which he does not merely turn around the relationship between subject and object, but also has to redefine the nature of the subject. The development of the subject starts with Kant’s idea of an observer who (...)

Quality in ethics consultations.Gerard Magill - 2013 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 16 (4):761-774.
There is an increasing need for quality in ethics consultations, though there have been significant achievements in the United States and Europe. However, fundamental concerns that place the profession in jeopardy are discussed from the perspective of the U.S. in a manner that will be helpful for other countries. The descriptive component of the essay (the first two points) explains the achievements in ethics quality (illustrated by the IntegratedEthics program of the Veterans Health Administration) and the progress on standards and (...)

    Introduction.Gérard Bensussan & Luc Fraisse - 2018 - Les Cahiers Philosophiques de Strasbourg 43:9-12.
