Kant’s critique/doctrine distinction tracks the difference between a canon for the understanding’s proper use and an organon for its dialectical misuse. The latter reflects the dogmatic use of reason to attain a doctrine of knowledge with no antecedent critique. In the 1790s, Fichte collapses Kant’s distinction and redefines dogmatism. He argues that deriving a canon is essentially dialectical and thus yields an organon: critical idealism is properly a doctrine of science or Wissenschaftslehre. Criticism is furthermore said to refute dogmatism, by (...) which Fichte means Spinozism. Schelling repudiates Fichte’s position in his Philosophical Letters by reviving Kant’s distinction. First, ‘critique’ for Schelling names a canon that is valid for all systems—including Spinozism—and thus favours none—not even the Wissenschaftslehre. Second, Schelling coins ‘dogmaticism’ to refer to what Kant calls ‘dogmatism’: reason’s uncritical claim to doctrine. Hence, he says all systems—even Fichte’s—are susceptible to the ‘enthusiasm’ of mistaking themselves for doctrines or ‘objects of knowledge’, instead of subjectively valid ‘objects of freedom’. I reconstruct Schelling’s argument for reviving Kant’s distinction, while noting two consequences for German idealism. First, if criticism favours no system, a system’s origin cannot be an act of knowledge, e.g., intellectual intuition, but only an act of endorsement. Second, if dogmaticism entails enthusiasm, a system’s goal cannot be absolute knowledge, but only infinite striving. Hence, by retrieving Schelling’s notion of dogmaticism, we can both gain a better understanding of the Letters and register the impact of a core Kantian distinction on the German idealist project. Der Begriff einer weisen Entscheidung ist methodisch leichter zugänglich als der allgemeine Begriff der Weisheit. Wenn wir wissen, was weise Entscheidungen ausmacht, dann öffnet sich uns auch ein Zugang zu den entsprechenden Eigenschaften und Fähigkeiten einer Person. Die Abhandlung soll zeigen, dass sich eine Analyse weiser Entscheidungen nicht auf eine attributive Lesart: „S entscheidet weise“ beschränken kann, sondern die adverbiale Lesart: „S entscheidet sich auf eine weise Art“ berücksichtigen muss. Die externalistische Perspektive der ersten Lesart führt zwar zu einer notwendigen (...) qualitativen Bedingung, der jede weise Entscheidung im Resultat gerecht werden muss. Erst die internalistische Perspektive der zweiten Lesart entspricht unseren Intuitionen, dass ein solches Resultat nicht zufällig zustande gekommen sein darf, sondern sich bestimmten epistemischen Leistungen des Akteurs verdankt, wie seiner Urteilskompetenz und Reflexionsfähigkeit der Gründe für die Entscheidung. Diese Leistungen schließen insbesondere die Meta-Fähigkeit, erststufige Gründe von zweitstufigen Gründen zu trennen ein, die sich nicht auf den Wert, den das Objekt der Entscheidung hat beziehen, sondern auf den Wert der Einstellung, die der Entscheidung zugrunde liegt. "Was sind epistemische Werte? Welcher Wert aus der Familie: Wissen, Wahrheit, Rechtfertigung, kognitive Leistung usw. ist fundamental, so dass aus ihm die anderen Werte abgeleitet werden können? Oder gilt ein Pluralismus? Welcher Wert wird final, d.h. um seiner selbst willen, geschätzt; welcher dient nur instrumentell der Realisierung eines anderen Werts? Ist, wie die Menon-Intuition nahe legt, Wissen mehr wert als wahre Überzeugung? Die Wertschätzung von Wissen scheint in dem erwarteten Ausschluss von epistemischem Zufall begründet zu sein. Aber welche Arten von (...) epistemischem Zufall können wir überhaupt ausschließen? Welche Rolle spielen dabei rechtfertigende Gründe? Ungeklärt ist auch das Verhältnis, das Werte, Normen und Ziele in unserer epistemischen Praxis eingehen. Ist Wissen und/oder Wahrheit nicht eher als gemeinschaftlich angestrebtes, durch Institutionen reguliertes Ziel unserer Erkenntnispraxis zu begreifen? Die Fragen stehen im Schnittpunkt zweier Debatten: einmal der seit ca. 50 Jahren geführten Debatte um eine Definition des Wissensbegriffs, die den Einwänden standhält, mit denen Gettier das klassische Paradigma von Wissen als wahrer, gerechtfertigter Überzeugung unterminiert hat. Zum anderen der jüngeren, seit ca. 15 Jahren geführten Debatte um den Wertbegriff. : In Kant’s writings there is no worked out theory of values. Nonetheless,he has given some hints as to what such a Kantian theory of value might look like. I argue for the claim that his theory should be classified as a version of a fitting-attitude theory of value that is nowadays advocated by several philosophers. Values are, according to Kant, dependent on proper pro-attitudes. In order for a pro-attitude to be apt, the pro-attitude must be explained by reasons that (...) are grounded in properties the attitude is about. One problem for this view is the so-called “wrong kinds of reasons problem”. According to my view, this problem can be solved by delivering distinct definitions of aptness for first- and second-order pro-attitudes. I try to show that Kant has hinted at this solution for the “wrong kinds of reasons problem”. (shrink)

Was muss eine Zeittheorie leisten, um die Persistenz solcher Entitäten in dynamischen Veränderungsprozessen adäquat zu beschreiben? Und wie ist diese Persistenz zu erklären? Ein zentrales Problem jeder Zeittheorie ist auch die Erklärung des Gegenwartsbezugs. Der (...) indexikalische Ausdruck,,jetzt" zeigt die subjektbezogene Gegenwart seines Benutzers an. Wie erklären wir uns dann den gemeinsam hergestellten Bezug auf eine objektive Gegenwart? Und welcher Typ von Ontologie ist für die Erklärung der Leistungen unseres temporalen Repräsentationssystems adäquat? Die Rekonstruktion zeitontologischer Annahmen weist auch eine formale Dimension auf: Welche Art von Zeitlogik ist ausdrucksstark genug, unsere tempushaltigen Sätze zu formalisieren? Meillassoux seeks knowledge of transcendental reality, blaming Kant for the ‘correlationist’ proscription of independent access to either thought or being. For Meillassoux, correlationism blocks an account of the meaning of ‘ancestral statements’ regarding reality prior to humans. I examine three charges on which Meillassoux’s argument depends: (1) Kant distorts ancestral statements’ meaning; (2) Kant fallaciously infers causality’s necessity; (3) Kant’s transcendental idealism cannot grasp ‘the great outdoors’. I reject these charges: (1) imposes a Cartesian misreading, hence Meillassoux’s false assumption that, (...) for Kant, objects don’t exist without subjects; (2) misreads Kant, who infers causality’s necessity from the possibility of experience; (3) casts Kant’s idealism as subjective, ignoring his perspectival portrayal of it. Bazzocchi disposes the text of the Tractatus in a user-friendly manner, exactly as Wittgenstein's decimals advise. This discloses the logical form of the book by distinct reading units, linked into a fashioned hierarchical tree. The text becomes much clearer and every reader can enjoy, finally, its formal and literary qualities.

Knowledge of mechanisms is critical for causal reasoning. We contrasted two possible organizations of causal knowledge—an interconnected causal network, where events are causally connected without any boundaries delineating discrete mechanisms; or a set of disparate mechanisms—causal islands—such that events in different mechanisms are not thought to be related even when they belong to the same causal chain. To distinguish these possibilities, we tested whether people make transitive judgments about causal chains by inferring, given A causes B and B causes C, (...) that A causes C. Specifically, causal chains schematized as one chunk or mechanism in semantic memory led to transitive causal judgments. On the other hand, chains schematized as multiple chunks led to intransitive judgments despite strong intermediate links. Normative accounts of causal intransitivity could not explain these intransitive judgments. (shrink)
