Producing, Localising, and Imagining Knowledge. On “false maps” and “scientific expeditions” in the Brazilian‐French Debates about Guyana (1880s–1900s). This paper analyses the interferences between knowledge production, space and colonial claims from translocal, actor‐based perspectives. Due to its ‘thickness’ the examined material, found particularly at the Perthes collection (Gotha/Germany), allows multifaceted views on a topic which influences our scientific knowledge‐based world views. In his writings the Swiss naturalist Emil Göldi underlined his point of view that was both ‘Brazilianized’ and scientific. Especially (...) his letters and articles between the 1880s and the 1900s are testimony to his positioning in situ (‘an Ort und Stelle’) against the cartographic ‘alienated’‐colonial perspectives of French scientists, especially those of his counterpart Henri Coudreau. Sometimes it reads more like an adventure story than a scholarly debate. By working with and using the internationally renowned periodical Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen (Perthes), Göldi managed to design an image of the spatial situation that convinced the deciding people and thus to obtain for Brazil a huge territory in the Eastern part of the Guyanas. English summary: Gadamer's main work, Truth and Method, will be published in 2010, exactly 50 years after the first edition, in a slightly corrected version as an inexpensive student edition. This is seen as one of the few standard works of German post-war philosophy which has achieved worldwide recognition. The huge reaction to this is surprising for many reasons, among other things because in this work an important new theory is presented in intimations only using the author's own conceptual (...) instruments; in fact the author is careful when touching on ancient themes in the philosophical approach to the world. The main question in the work is: What actually happens when we understand? Gadamer focuses on the historical dimensions of understanding, including his famous rehabilitation of prejudice. In addition to the systematic excursus, the book contains an intellectual history of hermeneutics, which is convincing in its virtuosity in dealing with a variety of inspirational figures such as Hegel, Dilthey, Husserl and Heidegger. The amiability and objectivity with which Gadamer invites his readers to a discussion are what account for the enormous influence of this exemplary textbook. So heftig und kontrovers wie der von Patsy L’Amour LaLove, einer an der HU Berlin promovierten Geschlechterforscherin, herausgegebene Essayband (Beißreflexe, 2017) wurde seit langer Zeit kein (wissenschaftliches) Buch mehr diskutiert. Es drängt sich der Eindruck auf, dass die sich selbst als aktivistische »Polittunte « verstehende Herausgeberin offensichtlich den Zeitgeist eines mit sich selbst strauchelnden Queerfeminismus getroffen habe: Solch eine Vielzahl an mehr als nur leidenschaftlichen Reaktionen allerlei Couleur konnte eine in erster Linie akademische Anthologie mit Texten zur aktuellen Verfassung der (...) LGBTIQ*-Kultur und -Szene sowie zum Stand der akademisch geführten und im Zweifelsfall auch gelebten Queer Studies seit geraumer Zeit nicht verzeichnen – was sich unter anderem in der mittlerweile nun vierten Auflage des Titels innerhalb eines Jahres seit Veröffentlichung niederschlägt. Im Zuge der Debatte, welche in den letzten Wochen und Monaten in verschiedensten Medien (Zeit, Tagesspiegel, NZZ, FAZ, Süddeutsche) um die Publikation entbrannte, haben sich sowohl die darin versammelten AutorInnen als auch Judith Butler, Sabine Hark, Paula-Irene Billa, Alice Schwarzer und andere zu Wort gemeldet. Der selbst als Autor in besagtem Band vertretene freie Journalist und Redakteur Dirk Ludigs beanstandet seinerseits, dass die queeren akademischen Diskurse unserer Tage einem toten Rennen gleichen. Der Stellungskrieg der Kulturtheorien verändere nicht nur nichts mehr in den Köpfen aller Teilnehmenden, seine Debatten gehen zudem noch praktisch spurlos an all jenen vorbei, zu deren Verbesserung der Verhältnisse sie angeblich geführt werden würden. Es sei, so die Position des selber seit den 80er Jahren in der queeraktivistischen Szene Berlins sozialisierten Autors, an der Zeit, die (zu) weitgehende Akademisierung queeren Denkens und Handelns kritisch zu hinterfragen und nach fruchtbaren Quellen für einen anderen queeren Aktivismus zu suchen. Eine entgegengesetzte Position vertritt Andrea Geier. Auch sie räumt ein, dass die Identitätspolitik in eine Krise geraten sei –der Vorwurf, dass mehr um die Anerkennung von Identitäten statt für deren Überwindung gekämpft werde, würde darüber hinaus von Neudeutungen postmoderner Theorien begleiten werden sowie von der Frage, ob sich aus akademischen Theoriediskursen überhaupt noch emanzipatorisches Potential gewinnen ließe. Ihr Beitrag erörtert aus akademisch geschulter und kritischer Perspektive diese Entwicklungen und plädiert mit Nachdruck für eine Debattenkultur, welche sich mit intersektional geschärftem Blick notwendig komplexen Aushandlungsprozessen der uns heute in all ihren komplexen Facetten und Problematiken begegnenden Identitätskultur und -politik auseinandersetzt. It has been a long time since a (scientific) anthology has been discussed so intensely and controversially as it has been the case with the volume of Patsy L’Amour LaLove (Beißreflexe, 2017), who achieved her PhD in Gender studies at the HU Berlin. It is not easy to shake off the impression that the editor, who thinks of herself as an activist »Polittunte« (political pansy) has captured the Zeitgeist of a queer-feminism that is at war with itself: a fact which is reflected in the multitude of rather passionate responses from all kinds of social backgrounds; no other first and foremost academic anthology composed of texts concerning the current constitution of the LGBTIQ*-culture and –scene as well as discussing the current status of academically argued and sometimes lived queer-studies has been able to garner so much attention. The huge success of this work is also reflected in this being the fourth edition within one year since its original publication. Referring to the debate kindled by the anthology which has been present in different newspapers over the past weeks and months (Zeit, Tagesspiegel, NZZ, FAZ, Süddeutsche), some of the authors have made a public statement as well as other public figures such as Judith Butler, Sabine Hark, Paula-Irene Billa and Alice Schwarzer. Free journalist and editor, Dirk Ludigs, who is an author of one of the articles from the anthology has since stated that today’s academic discussion concerning queer subjects resembles a dead heat. The practice of positional warfare in culture theories not only fails to evoke a change in the minds of its participants but rather passes by the very people whose circumstances it originally helped to alleviate. Being an author of the Berlin queer-activist scene since the 1980s he states that it is time to challenge the (too) extensive academisation of queer thinking and action and to be on the outlook for other sources of queer activism. Andrea Geier supports a contradicting position; she, too, acknowledges the crisis of identity politics – the accusation that the fight is mainly about recognition of identity and less about the triumph over it is backed up by new interpretations of postmodern theories as well as the question of whether it is possible to gain emancipatory potential out of academic theory-driven discussions. Her article discussed these developments from an academically educated and critical perspective and expressively supports the call for a culture of debate that, with a keen eye for intersectional themes, discusses the necessarily complex negotiation processes of identity culture and politics in all their facets and inherent problems. The paper examines Fritz Jahr as a possible role-model in bioethical education. It consists of two parts. The first part builds upon the acknowledged data and theories about how Fritz Jahr proposed the bioethical imperative and changed his way of thinking. It provides arguments for and against known claims and expands the knowledge background with the focus on reconstructing the thought process and some presumptions that led to the formulation of bioethical imperative. The second part uses these results to infer (...) five features to show how we can extract and define methodological features from Jahr’s personality and activity, which confirm and enhance integrative projects. An attempt has been made to understand that something such as “Jahrian methodology”, might be sensible enough to provide scientific knowledge and cultural orientation without simplifying the bios, but that it is pointless without integration with educational models, and to emphasise this I conclusively consider the role of bioethicists in the 21st century. It seems that the revitalisation of Fritz Jahr’s thought has come just at the right time. During the course of its rapid development, bioethics managed to assume different forms, but also to become both reduced in its underlying intention and hyper-specialised in its theoretical and practical aspects. Summed up in his bioethical imperative, Fritz Jahr’s thought prompts us to re-examine both its underlying intention and its field of interest. Accordingly, this paper centres on Jahr’s bioethical imperative, its origins, construction and (...) implications, aiming to scrutinise Jahr’s original thought and his message within the contemporary discourse on bioethics in general and that on integrative bioethics in particular. The latter is examined only in its outlines, leaving room for a possible upgrade. Lastly, the paper looks at the Rijeka Declaration as a document that represents an attempt to both conceptually and methodologically transform contemporary bioethics within the context of Jahr’s thought.*. In 1997, thanks to a conference paper by Rolf Löther of Berlin Humboldt University, the name of Fritz Jahr (1895-1953) was mentioned for the first time as the creator of the term and concept of bioethics (Bio-Ethik). As yet, Hans-Martin Sass of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics has been the only one to analyze Jahr's ideas more thoroughly, dedicating to the subject a series of papers (see Sass 2007). In December 2010, a collection of 15 papers by Jahr was published (...) in the German original, while in May 2011, a selection of 16 papers appeared in English translation (Jahr 2011).So who, in fact, was Jahr? 90 Jahre nach der Erstpublikation von Heideggers Hauptwerk Sein und Zeit rekonstruieren die verschiedenen Beitrage des Bandes den fundamentalontologischen Denkansatz im Horizont der Philosophie der Moderne ebenso wie der abendlandischen Metaphysik und nicht zuletzt im Zusammenhang von Heideggers Denkweg. Wie wenige Werke der Philosophie entfaltet Heideggers chef d'oeuvre noch immer eine ungebrochene Faszination. In den Aufsatzen verbinden sich unterschiedliche Zugange zu Heideggers Werk, von der Phanomenologie uber die philologisch-textimmanente Interpretation bis zu Verfahrensweisen der analytischen Philosophie. Sie lassen sich daher (...) als reprasentativer Querschnitt heutiger auf dessen Denken konzentrierter Heidegger-Forschung verstehen. Innen- und Aussenperspektiven erganzen einander dabei fruchtbar. Die in Sein und Zeit exponierten und entwickelten Phanomene und Begriffe werden gleichermassen sowohl in ihrer immanenten Bedeutungsstruktur wie auch in ihren Kontexten und ihrer systematischen Relevanz analysiert. : In 1927, Fritz Jahr, a Protestant pastor, philosopher, and educator in Halle an der Saale, published an article entitled "Bio-Ethics: A Review of the Ethical Relationships of Humans to Animals and Plants" and proposed a "Bioethical Imperative," extending Kant's moral imperative to all forms of life. Reviewing new physiological knowledge of his times and moral challenges associated with the development of secular and pluralistic societies, Jahr redefines moral obligations towards human and nonhuman forms of life, outlining the concept of (...) bioethics as an academic discipline, principle, and virtue. Although he had no immediate long-lasting influence during politically and morally turbulent times, his argument that new science and technology requires new ethical and philosophical reflection and resolve may contribute toward clarification of terminology and of normative and practical visions of bioethics, including understanding of the geoethical dimensions of bioethics. Das Paper präsentiert die Grunddaten über die Laufbahn Fritz Jahrs , des deutschen Lehrers und Theologen, welcher sich erstmalig in der Geschichte, in einem Artikel aus dem Jahre 1927, des Fachbegriffs ,Bio-Ethik‘ bedient sowie das Konzept einer neuen, auf dem „bioethischen Imperativ“ ruhenden Disziplin unterbreitet hat – die Revision des kantischen kategorischen Imperativs, ausgedehnt auf Tiere und Pflanzen. Während einige Angaben über die Publikationen von Fritz Jahr allerdings bekannt sind , blieb wiederum Jahrs biografischer Hintergrund bislang rundherum unerforscht. Zudem (...) durchforstet das vorliegende Referat kurz und bündig die Entdeckungschronologie von Jahrs OEuvre gegen 1997, indem es das Datum sowie den Ort der Bioethik-Konzeption um etwa ein halbes Jahrhundert rückwärts und von einem Kontinent zum anderen verlegt. The paper presents the basic data about the life of Fritz Jahr , the German teacher and theologian who, for the first time in history, in an article from 1927, used the term ‘bio-ethics’ and proposed a concept of a new discipline based upon the “bioethical imperative” – a revision of the Kantian categorical imperative, extended onto animals and plants. While some data, however, about the publications by Fritz Jahr have been known , the biographical background of Jahr was completely (...) unexplored as yet. The present paper briefly investigates also the chronology of the discovery of Jahr’s work in about 1997, shifting the date and the location of the conception of bioethics for about half a century back and from one continent to the other. Die Revitalisierung des Gedankens Fritz Jahrs scheint rechtzeitig aufzutreten. Der Bioethik gelang es, im Laufe ihrer temporeichen Entwicklung diverse Formen anzunehmen, nichtsdestotrotz in ihrer Grundintention reduziert sowie in ihren theoriebezogenen und praktischen Aspekten hyperspezialisiert zutage zu treten. Die Idee Fritz Jahrs, summiert in dessen bioethischem Imperativ, gibt uns den Ansporn, sowohl die Grundintention der Bioethik als auch ihr Gegenstandsgebiet von Neuem in Augenschein zu nehmen. Mithin richtet sich diese Arbeit auf Jahrs bioethischen Imperativ, dessen Ansatzpunkte, Konstruktion und Implikationen, mit zweifachem (...) Vorhaben: Jahrs Quellgedanken auszuforschen sowie eine Auslegung seiner Botschaft im Rahmen des zeitgenössischen Diskurses zur Bioethik – speziell zur integrativen Bioethik - zu wagen. Das Letztere wurde lediglich durch Anmerkungen ausgeführt, indem es einen Manövrierraum zum eventuellen Gedankenaufbau offenließ. Abschließend nimmt der Text einen Rückblick auf die Rijekaer Deklaration als ein Dokument, das einen Versuch der konzeptuellen und methodologischen Transformation der gegenwärtigen Bioethik im Kontext von Jahrs Idee darlegt. Unter dem umfangreichen schriftlichen Nachlass von Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz besitzt die im Jahre 1714 in Wien entstandene so genannte Monadologie ohne Zweifel einen herausragenden Stellenwert. Seit ihrer Entstehung und bis in die Gegenwart hinein ist die geradezu hingeworfene Gelegenheitsschrift einer der wirkmachtigsten Schlusseltexte der Leibniz'schen Philosophie geblieben. Ziel dieses Bandes ist es, die Interpretation, Rezeption und Transformation der Monadologie erstmals zu bundeln und ins Verhaltnis zueinander zu setzen. Im Fokus stehen diejenigen Prozesse und Reflexionen, die die Leibniz'sche Monadenlehre im (...) Im Berliner Wissenschaftsjahr 2010 wird die Charité, das größte Universitätsklinikum Europas, ihr 300-jähriges Jubiläum feiern. Zu diesem Anlass entstand der vorliegende Band,,Charité 300 - Geschichte, Gegenwart, Horizonte". Es zeigt, wie aus dem 1710 als Pesthaus vor den Toren Berlins gegründeten Krankenhaus heute eines der international führenden Zentren medizinischer Forschung und Lehre wurde. Schwerpunkt ist dabei die rasante Entwicklung der Charité in den Jahren seit der Wende und die Zukunftsperspektiven dieses traditionsreichen Wissenschaftsstandorts von Weltrang. An evaluating survey of the development of the neuroethics of pharmaceutical cognitive enhancement (PCE) during the last decade, focussing on the situation in Germany, has been undertaken. This article presents the most important conceptual problems, current substances and central ethical and legal issues. Very first guidelines and recommendations for policy-makers are formulated at the end of the text.

Ethical approval must be obtained before medical research can start. We describe the differences in EA for an pseudonymous, non-interventional, observational European study. Sixteen European national coordinators of the international study on very old intensive care patients answered an online questionnaire concerning their experience getting EA. N = 8/16 of the NCs could apply at one single national ethical committee, while the others had to apply to various regional ECs and/or individual hospital institutional research boards. The time between applying for (...) EA and the first decision varied between 7 days and 300 days. In 9/16 informed consent from the patient was not deemed necessary; in 7/16 informed consent was required from the patient or relatives. The upload of coded data to a central database required additional information in 14/16. In 4/16 the NCs had to ask separate approval to keep a subject identification code list to de-pseudonymize the patients if questions would occur. Only 2/16 of the NCs agreed that informed consent was necessary for this observational study. Overall, 6/16 of the NCs were satisfied with the entire process and 8/16 were unsatisfied. 11/16 would welcome a European central EC that would judge observational studies for all European countries. Variations in the process and prolonged time needed to get EA for observational studies hampers inclusion of patients in some European countries. This might have a negative influence on the external validity. Further harmonization of ethical approval process across Europe is welcomed for low-risk observational studies. Getting ethical approval for low-risk, non-interventional, observational studies varies enormously across European countries. (shrink)

Sigmund Freuds »Jenseits des Lustprinzips« und die darin entwickelte Todestriebhypothese werden seit 100 Jahren kontrovers diskutiert, wobei die »zaudernde« Rezeption den im Text beschriebenen und vorgeführten »Zauderrhythmus« des Freud’schen Denkens abbildet. Die vorliegende Arbeit nimmt ausgehend von einer Skizze der Freud’schen Kernannahmen zum Todestrieb eine werkgeschichtliche Einordnung vor und stellt dann die Rezeptionsgeschichte einschließlich der Vorschläge zur Modifikationen in verschiedenen psychoanalytischen Denklinien vor (Klein-Bion, Lacan und andere französische Autoren, Bedeutung der Aggression). Neuere Ansätze werden unter dem Blickwinkel dialektischen Denkens und (...) des Einbezugs von Objektverlust betrachtet und Bezüge zur Sozialpsychologie und Kulturphilosophie dargestellt. Geendet wird in einer Diskussion der Konzeptualisierung »jenseits« des Lustprinzips, des Status des Todestriebs als Trieb sowie der Frage nach einem Triebmonismus. (shrink)
