ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDer Artikel erläutert vier Thesen, in denen der Beitrag der theologischen Anthropologie zum interdisziplinären Gespräch über die Sozialnatur des Menschen bestimmt wird. Die Theologie kann zu diesem Gespräch beitragen, indem sie nicht die biologische Unterscheidung von Mensch und Tier in den Vordergrund rückt, sondern die ethische Differenz von Menschlichkeit und Unmenschlichkeit zur Leitdifferenz ihrer Beschreibungsperspektive macht. Sie bringt ihre Sichtweise konstruktiv in das interdisziplinäre Gespräch ein, indem sie eine Phänomenologie und Grammatik des zwischenmenschlichen Verhältnisses entwirft, welche die Differenz von humanem (...) und inhumanem Zusammenleben von Menschen durch das Indexwort ›Gott‹ explizit macht.SUMMARYThe article presents four arguments concerning the contribution of theological anthropology to an interdisciplinary dialogue on the sociality of human nature. It defends the view that theology shall not employ the biological difference of man and animal to describe social humanity. Rather, it can challenge interdisciplinary dialogue with the social sciences by focusing on the ethical non-indifference of social humanity and inhumanity. Thus, theology has to conceptualize a phenomenology of interpersonal relationships which faces the possible neglect of inhumanity and offers a grammar of sociality making the difference of humanity and inhumanity explicit by using the index word ›God‹. Insofar as the purpose of modern law is to secure the freedom of the individual, meaning that modern law is thus a right of freedom, the question arises as to how this right of freedom relates to fear. The article first refers to the narrative of religion as a regime of fear, which is historically related to the narrative of peace through law. After analysing the religious technique of increasing and escalating the irrational and derailing moment of fear, it contrasts (...) the religious regime of fear with the modern regime of fear in the form of law and interprets the latter as an order of immunization against fear, i.e., as a technique of securing domination by ‘taking in the hostile other’ at the price of its division. In this perspective, law appears as a secularized version of the religiously driven escalation of fear; within the framework of a secular order of immanence it seeks to immobilize the relationship to the indeterminate and extraordinary as cultivated by fear in its abysmal nature. Consequently, fear returns to the realm of religion and superstition assigned to it in enlightened modernity. But, disturbingly, in pandemic society it continues to haunt the belief in the reality-assuring power of the normative legal order in the form of the intensifying fear of the ‘enemy in the body’. This article takes up the current debate on populism and democracy and deals with the philosophical critique that the twentieth-century idea of pacifism represents an ideology, the misguided nature of which must be debunked. In this context, the term ideology is referred to with a post-Marxist understanding, which interprets ideology as a collective fantasy structuring our social reality by way of a practice of disguise. Hence, the question will be raised as to whether modern religions, such as neo-Buddhism or Christianity, (...) are well advised to appropriate the idea of pacifism in order to renew their imaginary register of peace and non-violence. In conclusion, it will be argued that the imagination and promise of a peaceful community is among the biblical motives that are the source of Christian faith. However, in order to prevent a political force from turning into an ideology, biblical motives have to be interpreted from the perspective of a negative Christology, which sees pacifism as an impossible project and thus liberates us from the pitfalls of human desire. Zusammenfassung Der Artikel untersucht die in der Sozialtheorie seit der Antike gebrauchte Metapher eines sozialen Bandes im Blick auf die Religion. Mit ihr wird die Performativität sozialer Bindungen und Kohäsionskräfte und damit ihre kulturelle Hervorbringung akzentuiert. Religion kann jedoch nicht einfach mit kulturellen Akten gleichgesetzt werden, wie es oft in liberalprotestantischen Ansätzen und in Konzeptionen einer Öffentlichen Theologie der Fall ist. Alternativ wird daher das Gespräch mit poststrukturalistischen Autoren gesucht, um von ihm her einen Bezug zur offenen Metaphorik des sozialen (...) Bandes und zur These seiner Performanz zu suchen. Zusammenfassung Der Artikel versucht, eine Typologie für die Beschreibung des Verhältnisses von Religion und Kultur in Theologie und Philosophie zu entwickeln. Er problematisiert die These moderner protestantischer Theologen, welche im Anschluss an Friedrich Schleiermacher ‚Religion als Kultur‘ deuten und diese Deutung zu einer differenzlosen Identifikation beider verdichten. Nach einer Klärung der Funktion des Religionsbegriffs in den Theologien von Calvin und Schleiermacher wird die aktuelle Debatte um ein de-kolonialisiertes Kulturverständnis adressiert und von ihr aus die Möglichkeit einer Neufassung des Verhältnisses von (...) In this article, we describe four theoretical and methodological problems that have impeded implicit attitude research and the popular understanding of its findings. The problems all revolve around assumptions made about the relationships among measures, constructs, cognitive processes, and features of processing. These assumptions have confused our understandings of exactly what we are measuring, the processes that produce implicit evaluations, the meaning of differences in implicit evaluations across people and contexts, the meaning of changes in implicit evaluations in response to (...) intervention, and how implicit evaluations predict behavior. We describe formal modeling as one means to address these problems, and provide illustrative examples. Clarifying these issues has important implications for our understanding of who has particular implicit evaluations and why, when those evaluations are likely to be particularly problematic, how we might best try to change them, and what interventions are best suited to minimize the effects of implicit evaluations on behavior. When it comes to cheating in higher education, business school students have often been accused of being the worst offenders; if true, this may be a contributing factor in the kinds of fraud that have plagued the business community in recent years. We examined the issue of cheating in the business school by surveying 268 students in business and other professional schools on their attitudes about, and experiences with, cheating. We found that while business school students actually cheated no more (...) or less than students in other professional schools, their attitudes on what constitutes cheating are more lax than those of other professional school students. Additionally, we found that serious cheaters across all professional schools were more likely to be younger and have a lower grade point average. (shrink)

Benjamin Libet compared the perceived time of direct brain stimulation to the perceived time of skin stimulation. His results are among the most controversial experiments at the interface between psychology and philosophy. The new element that I bring to this discussion is a reanalysis of Libet's raw data. Libet's original data were difficult to interpret because of the manner in which they were presented in tables. Plotting the data as psychometric functions shows that the observers have great uncertainty about the (...) relative timing of events, as seen the shallow psychometric slopes. A second indication of uncertainty comes from Libet's use of three response categories, A first; B first; and A and B simultaneous. The large number of “perceptually simultaneous” responses provides a further measure of the difficulty of the judgment. There are thus a very broad range of stimulus delays in which the subject is unable to make an accurate ordering response. These points provide evidence that there is no compelling reason to invent exotic or ad hoc mechanisms to account for Libet's data since the uncertainty window is large enough to allow simple mechanism such as memory shifts. Libet argued that his data provide evidence for a backward referral in time. I argue that even though Libet's own data are weak, there are good arguments for a backward referral mechanism to help the subject make sense out of the tangled chaos of asynchronous information associated with experienced events. We argue that the dual-system approach and, particularly, the default-interventionist framework favored by De Neys unnecessarily constrains process models, limiting their range of application. In turn, the accommodations De Neys makes for these constraints raise questions of parsimony and falsifiability. We conclude that the extent to which processes possess features of system 1 versus system 2 must be tested empirically.

In an effort to assess the latest thinking in the Roman Catholic Church on economic matters, we examine the newest encyclical by Pope Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) for guidance concerning marketing and business strategy. Core ethical values, consistent with historical Catholic Social Teachings (CST), are retained. However, some important nuances are added to previous treatments, and, reflecting the mind of the current Pontiff, certain points of emphasis are shifted to account for recent global developments. Key areas (...) of consistency and differences (as we perceive them) are spelled out along with some brief commentary on the evolution of the CST position on matters of importance to business decision makers. We close our analysis with a brief discussion of how the lessons of the encyclical can be applied to selected marketing problems embedded with ethical issues, including some criteria for evaluating marketing programs. Finally, we note some editorial commentary published in the wake of the letter’s release along with our own summation. (shrink)

Dimensi sosial manusia telah lama menjadi subjek telaah filsafat sebagai wujud kesadaran bahwa manusia adalah zoon politikon (Aristoteles) atau homo sociale (Seneca). Pertanyaan umum yang biasa diajukan adalah, apakah manusia memang mampu bertindak secara altruistik, atau apakah manusia memiliki empati alamiah. Analisis ini tentu saja tidak dimonopoli oleh filsafat saja. Belakangan ini, ilmu-ilmu alam dan sosial seperti ekonomi, sosiobiologi, dan neurosains juga terlibat dalam studi atas dimensi yang dipandang khas pada manusia ini. Dalam ranah yang disebut sebagai “ekonomi eksperimental,”’ misalnya, (...) dipelajari perilaku kerjasama antarindividu yang hasilnya diharapkan dapat menjelaskan dasar perilaku sosial manusia. Dalam buku yang terdiri atas empat bab besar ini dianalisis berbagai pandangan mengenai relasi sosial manusia dalam konteks antropologi interdisipliner. Pengarang memperlihatkan perbedaan pandangan mengenai sosialitas dalam setiap bidang ilmu. Dalam disiplin neuroekonomi, sosialitas dipahami sebagai struktur preferensi perilaku manusia yang berakar pada neurobiologi. Dalam fenomenologi sosial dan etika, istilah ini mengacu pada struktur dasar perbedaan dan relasionalitas dalam relasi antarmanusia. Teologi sendiri melihat sosialitas sebagai struktur relasi manusia dengan Tuhan dan sesama. Pengarang buku ini menunjukkan bahwa konsep mengenai aspek sosial manusia dalam bidang-bidang ini memang tidak sama, dan karena itu, pemahaman mengenai sosialitas manusia perlu dibangun berdasarkan konteks disiplin yang bersangkutan........................... Pembahasan atas topik sosialitas dalam buku ini memang sangat luas dan kaya karena melibatkan banyak pemikir dalam bidang ini seperti Hannah Arendt, Thomas Hobbes, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, Axel Honneth, Charles Taylor, Paul Ricoeur, dan Emmanuel Levinas. Dalam pemaparan mengenai relasi antarmanusia dari sudut teologis, pemikiran filsuf-teolog Søren Kierkegaard banyak sekali digunakan. Di satu sisi, kehadiran begitu banyak pemikir dalam buku ini dapat membuat pembaca kewalahan dalam memahami isinya. Di sisi lain, hal ini justru dapat dilihat sebagai salah satu kekayaan buku ini, yang dapat membuka wawasan pembaca dan mengajaknya untuk lebih mendalami pemikiran tokoh tertentu sesuai dengan minatnya. Seluruh studi ini membawa pengarang kepada kesimpulan bahwa hakikat sosialitas manusia tidak- lah dapat dipahami hanya dengan membandingkannya dengan sosialitas hewan, sebagaimana biasanya dilakukan. Pada akhirnya, hakikat ke- manusiaan, termasuk sosialitasnya, akan tersingkap dalam relasi dan interaksi konkret antarmanusia, entah bersifat positif atau negatif. In this study, we examine differences in cheating behaviors in higher education between two countries, namely the United States and the Czech Republic, which differ in many social, cultural and political aspects. We compare a recent (2011) Czech Republic survey of 291 students to that of 268 students in the US (Klein et al., 2007). For all items surveyed, CR students showed a higher propensity to engage in cheating. Additionally, we found more forms of serious cheating present in the (...) Czech sample. In all cases, the differences between the US and Czech samples were statistically significant. (shrink)

Quantum Mechanics is typically divided into two parts: the unobserved amplitude given by the equations of quantum field theory and the observed measurement aspect. We argue that a better approach is insert a probability realm in the middle. The reason is that every measurement involves interactions with a complex environment where massive decoherence transforms the amplitudes into standard probabilities. The probabilities eliminate complex superpositions so that quantum states A AND B become classical states A OR B. Thus the measurement process (...) becomes a simpler and more familiar process of the observer selecting from classical type probabilities. This is close to the approach recommended by Henry Stapp. We anticipate that by using this approach many of the different interpretations of quantum mechanics become more similar to each other. An attention shift from a stationary to a changing object has to occur in feature space, in order to bind these stimuli into a unitary percept. This time-consuming shift leads to the perception of a changing stimulus further ahead along its trajectory. This attentional framework is able to accommodate the flash-lag effect in its multiple empirical manifestations.

Event-based prospective memory tasks require the realisation of a delayed intention at the occurrence of a specific target event. The present research investigates how performance in this kind of prospective memory task is influenced by the current affective state. By manipulating participants’ mood during intention realisation we tested two competing models of mood effects on memory (i.e., a capacity consuming account and a processing style account). Furthermore, we manipulated the valence of the target event to investigate mood-congruency effects in prospective (...) memory. No evidence was found for a mood-congruency effect, but the results showed that prospective memory performance increased with a sad mood. This effect is consistent with recent theories on mood-dependent processing-style regulation, postulating that a sad mood produces a more analytic and detailed processing style whereas a happy mood produces a more global and less detailed processing style. Early versions of satellite and radiosonde datasets suggested that the tropical surface had warmed more than the troposphere, while climate models consistently showed tropospheric amplification of surface warming in response to human-caused increases in greenhouse gases. We revisit such comparisons here using new observational estimates of surface and tropospheric temperature changes. We find that there is no longer a serious discrepancy between modeled and observed trends in the tropics. Our results contradict a recent claim that all simulated temperature trends in (...) the tropical troposphere are inconsistent with observations. This claim was based on the use of older radiosonde and satellite datasets and on two methodological errors: the neglect of observational trend uncertainties introduced by interannual climate variability and application of an inappropriate statistical “consistency test”.This emerging reconciliation of models and observations has two primary explanations. First, because of changes in the treatment of buoy and satellite information, new surface temperature datasets yield slightly reduced tropical warming relative to earlier versions. Second, recently developed satellite and radiosonde datasets now show larger warming of the tropical lower troposphere. In the case of a new satellite dataset from remote sensing systems, enhancedRSS warming is due to an improved procedure of adjusting for inter-satellite biases. When the RSS-derived tropospheric temperature trend is compared with four different observed estimates of surface temperature change, the surface warming is invariably amplified in the tropical troposphere, consistent with model results. Even if we use data from a second satellite dataset with smaller tropospheric warming than in remote sensing systems RSS, observed tropical lapse rates are not significantly different from those in all model simulations.Our results contradict a recent claim that all simulated temperature trends in the tropical troposphere and in tropical lapse rates are inconsistent with observations.
