The Foundation of Philosophy and Atheism in Heidegger's Early Works - Prolegomena to an Existential-Ontological Perspective.Istvan V. Kiraly - 2009 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 8 (22):115-128.
The paper analyzes, from a perspective which is itself existential-ontological, the way in which in an early text of Martin Heidegger, Phänomenologische Interpretationen zu Aristoteles (Anzeige der hermeneutischen Situation) [1922] – which had already outlined some determinative elements of the ideas expounded in Being and Time –, the meditation on the always living and current conditions and hermeneutical situation of philosophizing expanded in fact into an inquiry about the origins, grounds, essence and sense of philosophy as such. Meditation in (...)

Religion and Atheism: Beyond the Divide.Anthony Carroll & Richard Norman (eds.) - 2016 - New York: Routledge.
Arguments between those who hold religious beliefs and those who do not have been at fever pitch. They have also reached an impasse, with equally entrenched views held by believer and atheist - and even agnostic - alike. This collection is one of the first books to move beyond this deadlock. Specially commissioned chapters address major areas that cut across the debate between the two sides: the origin of knowledge, objectivity and meaning; moral values and the nature of the human (...)

The philosophy of Anthony Collins: free-thought and atheism.

Beyond theism and atheism: Heidegger's significance for religious thinking.Robert S. Gall - 1987 - Hingham, MA, USA: Distributors for the U.S. and Canada, Kluwer Academic Publishers.
Through an analysis of key themes in Heidegger's work, the book challenges the traditional theological appropriation of Heidegger and the usual characterizations of religious thinking in terms of faith or belief in, or experience of, some ultimate reality. Heidegger, it is argued, offers a unique approach to a variety of issues and problems in contemporary religious thought and philosophy of religion that results in understanding religious thinking as a resolute openness to the holiness and meaningfulness of the world.

Saints, heretics, and atheists: a historical introduction to the philosophy of religion.Jeffrey K. McDonough - 2022 - New York, NY, United States of America: Oxford University Press.
This book offers a historical introduction to fundamental questions in the philosophy of religion. It is divided into twenty-five chapters. The first chapter discusses the nature of piety drawing on Plato's Euthyphro. The next three chapters discuss the nature of evil, free will, foreknowledge, and sin in the context of Augustine's On Free Choice of Will. Chapter Five discusses Anslem's "ontological" argument for the existence of God. Chapter Six explores Ibn Sina's account of the nature of the soul and (...)

Talking seriously about God: philosophy of religion in the dispute between theism and atheism.Asle Eikrem & Atle Ottesen Søvik (eds.) - 2016 - Wien: Lit.
Talk about God is often the source of controversy. Theists and atheists are equally passionate when making their stand for or against belief in God. In this book, a wide range of philosophers of religion have come together to discuss how serious talk about God ought to be conducted for theists and atheists alike in what should be their common pursuit for truth. The essays both address methodological questions and provide a range of concrete samples of serious God-talk, spanning from (...)

Epicureans and Atheists in France, 1650–1729.Alan Charles Kors - 2016 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Atheism was the most foundational challenge to early-modern French certainties. Theologians and philosophers labelled such atheism as absurd, confident that neither the fact nor behaviour of nature was explicable without reference to God. The alternative was a categorical naturalism, whose most extreme form was Epicureanism. The dynamics of the Christian learned world, however, which this book explains, allowed the wide dissemination of the Epicurean argument. By the end of the seventeenth century, atheism achieved real voice and life. (...)

Theism and Atheism in a Post-Secular Age.Morteza Hashemi - 2017 - Cham: Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan.
This book examines the post-secular idea of 'religion for non-believers'. The new form of unbelief which is dubbed as 'tourist atheism' is not based on absolute rejection of religion as a 'dangerous illusion' or 'mere prejudice'. Tourist atheists instead consider religion as a cultural heritage and a way of seeking perfection. What are the origins of these new forms of atheism? What are the implications of the emergence of a type of atheism which is more open toward (...)

Beyond Theism and Atheism: Axiarchism and Ananthropocentric Purposivism.Tim Mulgan - 2017 - Philosophy Compass 12 (6):e12420.
Two familiar worldviews dominate Western philosophy: materialist atheism and Abrahamic theism. One exciting development in recent philosophy of religion is the exploration of alternatives to both theism and atheism. This paper explores two alternatives: axiarchism and ananthropocentrism. Drawing on the long tradition of Platonism, axiarchists such as John Leslie, Derek Parfit and Nicholas Rescher posit a direct link between goodness and existence. The goodness of a possible world is what makes it actual. Ananthropocentric Purposivism holds that (...)

Difficult atheism: post-theological thinking in Alain Badiou, Jean-Luc Nancy and Quentin Meillassoux.Christopher Watkin - 2011 - Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press.
Difficult Atheism shows how contemporary French philosophy is rethinking the legacy of the death of God in ways that take the debate beyond the narrow confines of atheism into the much broader domain of post-theological thinking. Christopher Watkin argues that Alain Badiou, Jean-Luc Nancy and Quentin Meillassoux each elaborate a distinctive approach to the post-theological, but that each approach still struggles to do justice to the death of God.

    Evolution and atheism: Has Griffin reconciled science and religion?James H. Fetzer - 2011 - Synthese 178 (2):381-396.
The distinguished theologian, David Ray Griffin, has advanced a set of thirteen theses intended to characterize (what he calls) “Neo-Darwinism” and which he contrasts with “Intelligent Design”. Griffin maintains that Neo-Darwinism is “atheistic” in forgoing a creator but suggests that, by adopting a more modest scientific naturalism and embracing a more naturalistic theology, it is possible to find “a third way” that reconciles religion and science. The considerations adduced here suggest that Griffin has promised more than he can deliver. On (...)

Angels and Atheists.Fredrick Curry - 2013-09-05 - In Galen A. Foresman (ed.), Supernatural and Philosophy. Wiley. pp. 125–138.
We often lament our limited nature as human beings. Supernatural is certainly no stranger to this theme and often contrasts the many weaknesses of man to the awesome power of angels, demons, and otherworldly creatures. It should be enough to show that angels can reasonably be atheists by showing two things. First, the best arguments in favor of the existence of God are no better if Anna and Cas think about them, and second, that these angels are also in no (...)

Border Crossings: Toward a Comparative Political Theory.Fred Reinhard Dallmayr & Packey J. Dee Professor of Philosophy and Political Science Fred Dallmayr - 1999 - Global Encounters: Studies in.
Comparative political theory is at best an embryonic and marginalized endeavor. As practiced in most Western universities, the study of political theory generally involves a rehearsal of the canon of Western political thought from Plato to Marx. Only rarely are practitioners of political thought willing (and professionally encouraged) to transgress the canon and thereby the cultural boundaries of North America and Europe in the direction of genuine comparative investigation. Border Crossings presents an effort to remedy this situation, fully launching a (...)

    Hume beyond Theism and Atheism.Ariel Peckel - 2024 - Hume Studies 49 (1):9-33.
This paper defends a rigorous reading of Hume’s critiques of arguments for the existence of God and of the belief in God against interpretations that endorse Humean theism, deism, and fideism. The latter include Donald Livingston’s theist reading, J. C. A. Gaskin’s “attenuated deism” reading, and Edward Kanterian’s “humble fideism” reading. I also examine whether Hume’s rejections of a positive theology commit him to agnosticism or atheism. My innovative challenge to such conclusions maintains that, while elements of both agnosticism (...)

Are theism and atheism totally opposed? Can they learn from each other?J. Adam Carter - 2017 - In Mark Harris & Duncan Pritchard (eds.), Philosophy, Science and Religion for Everyone. New York: Routledge. pp. 82-92.
One very natural dividing line that—for better or worse—is often used to distinguish those who believe in God from those who do not is that between theism and atheism, where ‘theism’ is used to mark the believers and ‘atheism’ the non-believers. Such contrastive labels can serve many practical functions even when the terms in question are not clearly defined. Individuals are often, on the basis of their beliefs and values, attracted toward one such label more so than the (...)

I proffer a success argument for classical logical consequence. I articulate in what sense that notion of consequence should be regarded as the privileged notion for metaphysical inquiry aimed at uncovering the fundamental nature of the world. Classical logic breeds necessitism. I use necessitism to produce problems for both ontological naturalism and atheism.

Alexandre Kojève’s interpretation of Hegel has incited debate since his Introduction à la lecture de Hegel first appeared in 1947. Amongst his most controversial assertions is the claim that Hegel’s “philosophy is radically atheistic and non-religious.” Scholars have attempted to refute him by citing the pertinent passages from the Phenomenology, the Science of Logic and the Encyclopedia, not to mention the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion and the Proofs of the Existence of God. But such refutations are (...)

In this book on philosophy of God, Bonansea, emeritus professor of philosophy of the Catholic University of America, gives the results of many years’ reflection and teaching. It comprises three parts. The first is a discussion of various forms of atheism. The second is a consideration of forms of theistic proofs for the existence of God. The third is a treatment of issues concerning the relationship between God and the world.
