Le premier a nous en avoir laisse un commentaire est Themistius, au IVe siecle. Entre lui et l'epoque d'Averroes, d'Albert le Grand, de Thomas d'Aquin, rien ne nous est reste sur Lambda. Themistius paraphrase le texte et y mele de tres importantes digressions. L'original grec est perdu. De (...) la traduction arabe, nous n'avons que des fragments. Mais elle avait ete integralement traduite en hebreu. C'est a partir de ces deux sources que Remi Brague propose ici une traduction litterale, avec une introduction et des notes explicatives. Une methode renouvelee permet seule de montrer que les passages les plus celebres ne nous ont pas livre tous leurs secrets, et que ceux sur lesquels le regard glisse doivent au contraire retenir l'attention. L'interpretation ici proposee refuse de separer forme et contenu: si Platon a ecrit des dialogues, et non des traites, il devait avoir ses raisons. Le sens d'un dialogue ne se limite pas a (...) celui des repliques d'un seul personnage. Socrate n'est pas le porte-parole de Platon. Platon ne parle jamais en son propre nom. C'est le dialogue tout entier qui est l'enseignement, dans son plan, dans ses personnages, dans sa mise en scene. Elle refuse de supposer le sujet du dialogue: personne ne sait ce qu'est la vertu. C'est le dialogue qui doit appprendre ce qu'elle est. Elle refuse de se laisser imposer des passages classiques - la torpille, la reminiscence - entre lesquels il n'y aurait que du remplissage. Elle refuse d'expliquer les choix de Platon pour tel personnage, telle date, telle situation, par le renvoi positiviste a des faits exterieurs a la pensee reflechie du philosophe. Elle refuse d'ignorer les recentes decouvertes sur l'enseignement oral de Platon et en retrouve les principales doctrines dans le contenu, mais aussi la forme du texte. Elle demontre ainsi sur l'exemple d'un dialogue la fecondite d'une methode applicable a l'ensemble de l'oeuvre ecrite de Platon. (shrink)

Armes de destruction massive, pollution, extinction démographique : tout ce qui menace l'homme en tant qu'espèce vivante ne fait plus de doute. Mais il existe des facteurs qui viennent de l'homme lui-même, visant à saper son humanité propre. Ces facteurs ont beau être plus difficiles à saisir, c'est eux que Rémi Brague tâche de repérer à travers une analyse fulgurante et radicale de l'idée d'humanisme. Car il ne s'agit plus de savoir comment nous pouvons promouvoir la valeur homme et ce (...) qui est humain, en luttant contre toutes les figures de l'inhumain. Il s'agit désormais de savoir s'il faut vraiment promouvoir un tel humanisme. C'est l'humanisme lui-même qui est mis à mal. Ce phénomène récent, Rémi Brague en aperçoit des signes avant-coureurs dans trois oeuvres majeures du XXe siècle, celle du poète russe Alexandre Blok, qui écrivait à l'ère de la révolution d'Octobre, et, plus près de nous, celles des philosophes Michel Foucault et Hans Blumenberg. Nous ne pouvons plus nous bercer d'illusions. Il est facile de prêcher un humanisme réduit aux règles du vivre-ensemble, mais comment le fonder? La pensée moderne est à court d'arguments pour justifier l'existence même des hommes. En cherchant à bâtir sur son propre sol, à l'exclusion de tout ce qui transcende l'humain, nature ou Dieu, elle se prive de son point d'Archimède. Est-ce une façon de dire que le projet athée des temps modernes a échoué? C'est au lecteur d'en juger. (shrink)

In »Materie und Gedächtnis« , seinem Hauptwerk, erörtert der französische Philosoph und Nobelpreisträger Henri Bergson das Zusammenwirken von Körper und Geist in der freien Handlung. Auf höchstem gedanklichen Niveau, aber in bestechend einfacher Sprache geschrieben, zählt das Werk zu den wenigen herausragenden Grundtexten der Gegenwartsphilosophie, vergleichbar »in ihrer Zeit mit Berkeleys Principles oder Kants Kritik« .Nachdem Bergson im Essai sur les données immédiates de la conscience das Verhältnis von Freiheit und Determinismus auf eine neue Basis zu stellen versucht hat, wendet (...) er sich hier, in Auseinandersetzung mit der Psychologie und Hirnphysiologie seiner Zeit, dem alten philosophischen Problem des Verhältnisses von Geist und Materie zu. Dabei reduziert er ›Materie‹ weder – idealistisch – auf reine Vorstellungen noch nimmt sie – materialistisch – als deren dinglichen Grund an, sondern sieht sie als eine Gesamtheit von ›Bildern‹, wobei er den Bildbegriff auf halbem Wege zwischen Ding und Vorstellung ansetzt und damit vor die Trennung von Existenz und Erscheinung zurückgeht. Eine herausragende Bedeutung kommt dabei dem Gedächtnis zu: hier verstanden nicht als ›mechanisches‹ Registrieren aufgenommener Inhalte, sondern als ›reines‹, lebendiges Gedächtnis, das sich einer geistigen, in der Vergangenheit entstandenen Bilderwelt bedient und der Dauer korrespondiert. Das auf Dauer ausgerichtete Gedächtnis verweist auf eine Selbstständigkeit des Geistes, die allerdings qua Handlung wieder auf den Körper zurückwirkt. »Der Geist entnimmt der Materie die Wahrnehmungen, aus denen er seine Nahrung zieht, und gibt sie ihr zurück in Form von Bewegung, der er seine Freiheit aufgeprägt hat«. Plusieurs aspects de la métaphysique, de la physique, de l'éthique et de la psychologie d’Aristote peuvent s'interpréter comme des affleurements d'un concept non-thématisé, celui d'être-dans-le-monde (l'in-der-welt-sein de heidegger). L’ensemble de la pensée grecque classique, même si elle était fascinée par l'ordre du cosmos, ne s'est guère demande ce que signifiait "être-dans-le-monde". L’expérience de la facticité, qui est un des traits fondamentaux de celle-ci, est ce qui permet à Aristote dans le protreptique, de justifier la vie philosophique ; mais il conçoit (...) celle-ci comme culminant dans la contemplation, c'est-à-dire l'accès a ce qui est au plus haut point (ch. 2). Aristote est toujours resté pris dans cette ambiguïté, qui provient de ladite transposition : son éthique révèle ses hésitations entre deux sujets de l'agir moral : le "je" à qui il incombe d'agir de par ce qu'il a d'unique, le cédé a l'homme, tel qu'il est défini par sa place parmi les autres parties de l'univers (ch. 3 & 4). Par suite, il lui faut définir l'homme comme le plus mondain des êtres sublunaires : l'homme imite l'univers grâce à son universalité, et parce qu'il est capable de saisir les réalités les plus élevées (ch. 5). Cependant, Aristote ne peut définir le topos - ce dans quoi sont les choses- sans renvoyer à notre façon particulière d'être-là, même s'il réintroduit ensuite l'idée d'univers grâce à sa théorie des dimensions du corps humain comme fondées dans la structure objective du cosmos (ch. 6). Les difficultés de la définition aristotélicienne de l'âme ainsi que celles de la doctrine de l'intellect agent proviennent de la tentative d'Aristote pour transposer ce qu'il pense implicitement comme l'ouverture même du monde à travers notre présence dans le registre de la réalité mondaine-ce qui l'oblige à réduire l'âme à la conscience de ce qui se produit parmi les choses du monde (ch. 7). Il conçoit celui-ci d'une manière telle qu'elle l'amène à exclure le mouvement spécifiquement humain au profit de la continuité absolue des corps célestes. Cependant, la contemplation de soi du premier moteur reflète l'ambiguïté non résolue de l'energeia humaine : le pur acte d'être-là et l'activité de contempler le plus haut de tous les êtres s'y fondent (ch. 8). Dort fragt Paulus: «Hat nicht Gott die Weisheit der Welt als Torheit dargestellt?» . Der Sinn, den die Formel im Zusammenhang meiner Untersuchungen annimmt, hat mit dem paulinischen Anliegen nicht das Geringste zu tun. In letzter Instanz sind beide — die Untersuchung und das Anliegen des Paulus — doch von derselben Sorge geleitet.

Car au fond, qu'a-t-elle inventé? Ni la révolution technique, ni l'urbanisation, ni la société civile, ni même la personne comme sujet de libertés... Les idées modernes ne sont que des idées prémodernes, maquillées comme une marchandise volée. Avec le recul et la capacité d'analyse que lui permet sa formidable culture, Rémi Brague nous offre une série de réflexions incisives sur les notions de Modernité, de Culture, d'Histoire, de Sécularisation, de Progrès... On the God of the Christians tries to explain how Christians conceive of the God whom they worship. No proof for His existence is offered, but simply a description of the Christian image of God. The first step consists in doing away with some commonly held opinions that put them together with the other "monotheists," "religions of the book," and "religions of Abraham." Christians do believe in one God, but they do not conceive of its being one in the same (...) way as other "monotheists," like the first of them, the pharaoh Akhenaton (18th century before J.C.), like some philosophers, e.g., Aristotle, or like Islam. Christians admit the authority of a Holy Book, but don't consider it as being the peak of God's revelation. For them, revelation culminates in the person, life, and doings of Jesus - including his passion and resurrection. Christians acknowledge the exemplary figure of Abraham, but the stories they tell about him they share with Jews, but not with Muslims, who see in him the first Muslim. The Trinity is not a way to loosen the exclusivity of the only God. It is the very way in which God is one, i.e., in the inner richness and fecundity of love. The God of the Christians is Father, but not male. Human males become fathers through the mediation of a female. God is so radically the Father of everything and, in a very special sense, of the eternal Son, that He is not in need of a partner. His fatherhood can in no way legitimate the superiority of the male over the female sex. The God of the Christians doesn't want us to obey Him in order to enslave us; He expects us to act freely according to what is good for us. Now, the Good is not something that He has in store and bestows on His creatures. The Good is what He is and He is the Good of His creatures. The God of the Christians is merciful, but He takes seriously man's freedom, even when man doesn't accept Him. Hence, He doesn't content Himself with forgiving fromthe outside. He has to contrive a system (technically speaking: salvation history or "economy of salvation") that will enable Man freely to accept His love. (shrink)

Imagine you suddenly find yourself in the control room of a vast technological apparatus, sometime in the future, where you are told that science has satisfied all the needs of all living humans. Furthermore, you learn, the next generation of the species will not be produced in the usual way, but instead by this machine, provided only that somebody push a little red button. The catch: you have to give a reason for pushing it. You hesitate: what do you say? (...) Our own world is more like this scenario than we at first may be inclined to admit, not least in the fact that, mutatis mutandis, we seem to be struggling to come up with a good answer. The problem, says Rémi Brague, is fundamentally a metaphysical one. Now, mention of 'metaphysics' in decent society these days is likely to elicit a smile or an unimpressed shrug. If there is a shelf with that label on it in your typical bookstore you are as likely to find guides to crystals, chakras, or hemp care there as you are treatises by Aristotle, Aquinas, or Kant. And, in spite of the ongoing revival of academic interest in metaphysics, it remains a rather specialist domain, a marginal sub-discipline in departments of philosophy, be they analytical or continental in cast. But if you should take it too seriously, you'll lose your bearings in the real world, and you'll go adrift in some ethereal sea of dreams. It is, in a word, irrelevant--right? (shrink)
