What can remain unchanged while the Ru tradition (Confucianism) is continually passed down generationally and passed on geographically to non-Chinese Asian countries and beyond? Does the answer to this question hinted by the tradition itself, viz., the ethic of Three Guides and Five Constant Virtues, still work in contemporary society? As intrigued by these fundamental questions on Ruism, scholars have debated on the nature of the ethic and its adaptability to the contemporary world. One side of scholars condemned it as (...) an outdated, premodern ethic of power which urges unconditional obedience to hierarchy, while another side championed it as a modern ethic which aims to strengthen the autonomy of each individual in reciprocal relationships. While presenting two cases of Ru business practice, viz., Shibusawa Eiichi in Meiji Japan and Peter Drucker in the contemporary U.S., the article treats the controversial ethic as a hypothesis, and assesses it using an empirical method to reinforce views of scholars who have furnished a favorable interpretation of the ethic. This article reviews Shaun O’Dwyer’s latest book, Confucianism’s Prospects: A Reassessment. By critiquing philosophical theories of “Confucian democracy” and their shared sociological assumption that Confucianism still functions as a cultural matrix for East Asian societies, O’Dwyer argues that visions on the future of Confucianism alternative to what the currently fixed institutional infrastructure of liberal democracy entails are flawed. This is mainly because if unconstrained by the infrastructure, the hardwired paternalism and elitism of Confucian ethics would necessarily impose morally taxing burdens (...) upon a de facto pluralistic society. As his student, colleague, and friend, my learning process with Robert Neville has experienced two stages of perplexity, which I think represent to a large extent other scholars' similar experience of engaging Neville's thought. The two stages can be described as follows. First, given their familiarity with existing divisions of human knowledge of religion within modern research universities, scholars reading Neville's work may be confused by questions concerning its disciplinary nature, or what it is all about. Is it theology, philosophy, (...) or religious studies? As physical exercise benefits both physical and psychological health of college students, it is important to promote the habit of physical exercise among them. This study adopted the Health Action Process Approach model to understand the exercise intention–action link and determine the moderating role of self-efficacy. We recruited 242 students from a university in China and asked them to complete a six-wave survey. The survey results indicated that exercise intention was positively related to both coping planning and action planning, which (...) pave the way to performing the action of exercise. However, such mediation effects varied under conditions of self-efficacy. Participants with high self-efficacy exhibited stronger relationships between intention and planning, and between planning and action. The study results suggest that planning has a time-lagged mediation effect in the relationship between intention and action. Additionally, the findings shed light on the moderating role of self-efficacy, which can be useful in developing health-promotion strategies for college students. (shrink)

In the past few decades, a lot of optimization methods have been applied in estimating the parameter of photovoltaic models and obtained better results, but these methods still have some deficiencies, such as higher time complexity and poor stability. To tackle these problems, an enhanced success history adaptive DE with greedy mutation strategy is employed to optimize parameters of PV models to propose a parameter optimization method in this paper. In the EBLSHADE, the linear population size reduction strategy is used (...) to gradually reduce population to improve the search capabilities and balance the exploitation and exploration capabilities. The less and more greedy mutation strategy is used to enhance the exploitation capability and the exploration capability. Finally, a parameter optimization method based on EBLSHADE is proposed to optimize parameters of PV models. The different PV models are selected to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method. Comparison results demonstrate that the EBLSHADE is an effective and efficient method and the parameter optimization method is beneficial to design, control, and optimize the PV systems. (shrink)

ObjectiveBasic combat training is a kind of necessary high-intensity training to help each military recruit convert into a qualified soldier. In China, both the physical fatigue and passive psychological state have been observed in new recruits during BCT. However, after same-intensity training, the degree of fatigue and passive mood vary among recruits. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effect of BCT on mood state of recruits with different physical fitness levels from a perspective of fatigue.Materials and methodsBefore and after (...) BCT, the degree of fatigue and mood state of participants were evaluated via the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion Scale and Profile of Mood States Questionnaire immediately after 20 push-ups as RPE and POMS scores [total mood disturbance, passive mood and positive mood ]. The participants were divided into two groups according to the RPE score measured after BCT: group 1: RPE score after BCT < 13 and group 2: RPE score after BCT ≥ 13.ResultA total of 564 recruits were included. After BCT, in group 1, TMD and passive mood Ttension, Tfatigue, Tdepression, Tconfusion declined significantly, but positive mood both increased significantly ; while in group 2, only Tanger and Testeem increased significantly.ConclusionBCT could alleviate passive mood and add to positive mood for recruits with better physical fitness, while had no ameliorative effects on or even deteriorate most of the passive mood for recruits with worse physical fitness. Interval time-varying delay is common in control process, e.g., automatic robot control system, and its stability analysis is of great significance to ensure the reliable control of industrial processes. In order to improve the conservation of the existing robust stability analysis method, this paper considers a class of linear systems with norm-bounded uncertainty and interval time-varying delay as the research object. Less conservative robust stability criterion is put forward based on augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method and reciprocally convex combination. Firstly, the (...) delay interval is partitioned into multiple equidistant subintervals, and a new Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional comprising quadruple-integral term is introduced for each subinterval. Secondly, a novel delay-dependent stability criterion in terms of linear matrix inequalities is given by less conservative Wirtinger-based integral inequality approach. Three numerical comparative examples are given to verify the superiority of the proposed approach in reducing the conservation of conclusion. For the first example about closed-loop control systems with interval time-varying delays, the proposed robust stability criterion could get MADB about 0.3 more than the best results in the previous literature; and, for two other uncertain systems with interval time-varying delays, the MADB results obtained by the proposed method are better than those in the previous literature by about 0.045 and 0.054, respectively. All the example results obtained in this paper clearly show that our approach is better than other existing methods. (shrink)

This study deals with the problem of radar waveform design based on the weighted mutual information and the difference of two mutual information metrics in signal-dependent interference. Since the target and clutter information are included in the received signal at the beginning of the design, DMI-based waveform is designed according to the following criterion: maximizing the MI between the received signal and target impulse response while minimizing the MI between the received signal and the clutter impulse response. This criterion is (...) equivalent to maximizing the difference between the first MI and the second MI. Then maximizing the difference of two types of MI is used as the objective function, and the optimization model with the transmitted waveform energy constraint is established. In order to solve it, we resort to maximum marginal allocation method to find the DMI-based waveform. Since DMI-based waveform does not allocate energy to the frequency band where the clutter power spectral density is greater than the target PSD, we propose to weight the MI-based waveform and DMI-based waveform to synthesize the final optimal waveform. It could provide different trade-offs between two types of MI. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm is valid. (shrink)

Traditional rehabilitation strategies become difficult in the chronic phase stage of stroke prognosis. Brain–computer interface combined with external devices may improve motor function in chronic stroke patients, but it lacks comprehensive assessments of neurological changes regarding functional rehabilitation. This study aimed to comprehensively and quantitatively investigate the changes in brain activity induced by BCI–FES training in patients with chronic stroke. We analyzed the EEG of two groups of patients with chronic stroke, one group received functional electrical stimulation rehabilitation training and (...) the other group received BCI combined with FES training. We constructed functional networks in both groups of patients based on direct directed transfer function and assessed the changes in brain activity using graph theory analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: after rehabilitation training, the Fugl–Meyer assessment scale score was significantly improved in the BCI–FES group, and there was no significant difference in the FES group. Both the global and local graph theory measures of the brain network of patients with chronic stroke in the BCI–FES group were improved after rehabilitation training. The node strength in the contralesional hemisphere and central region of patients in the BCI–FES group was significantly higher than that in the FES group after the intervention, and a significant increase in the node strength of C4 in the contralesional sensorimotor cortex region could be observed in the BCI–FES group. These results suggest that BCI–FES rehabilitation training can induce clinically significant improvements in motor function of patients with chronic stroke. It can improve the functional integration and functional separation of brain networks and boost compensatory activity in the contralesional hemisphere to a certain extent. The findings of our study may provide new insights into understanding the plastic changes of brain activity in patients with chronic stroke induced by BCI–FES rehabilitation training. (shrink)

Menschen verfügen über ein komplexes Vermögen der Selbstlokalisierung in Raum und Zeit. Seine eigene Position festzustellen kann in verschiedenen Kontexten Verschiedenes bedeuten. Nicht jedes unsere raumzeitliche Lokalisierung und Orientierung betreffende Problem ist philosophischer Natur. Fragen wie »Wo ist Norden?«, »Wie weit ist es nach Hause?« oder »In welcher Richtung liegt das Ziel?« sind lebensweltliche und gegebenenfalls navigatorische Fragen. Die kognitiven Mechanismen und Fähigkeiten zu untersuchen, die unseren Lokalisierungs- und Orientierungsleistungen zugrunde liegen, ist eine Aufgabe für die Kognitionswissenschaften. Die Untersuchung der (...) Grundlagen unserer Orientierungsfähigkeit wirft aber auch begriffliche Fragen auf, und diese zu klären ist eine philosophische Aufgabe. Wichtige Beiträge dazu haben Kant, Husserl, Strawson, Tugendhat und Gareth Evans geleistet. Truls Wyller steht in dieser Reihe und hat wie kein anderer den transzendentalphilosophischen Gehalt von Lokalisierungs- und Orientierungsfragen herausgearbeitet. Gegen naturalistische Verkürzungen hat er mit großer Beharrlichkeit dafür argumentiert, dass das Vermögen, seine eigene Position in Raum und Zeit zu bestimmen, Implika-tionen hat, die die Bedingung der Möglichkeit von Erfahrung betreffen. Die folgende Skizze ist ungleich bescheidener angelegt. Ich werde wenig mehr tun, als wesentliche Einsichten der Literatur zur raumzeitlichen Selbstlokalisierung zusammenzutragen, wobei ich einige Akzente anders setze als Wyller. Insbesondere werde ich versuchen, so weit wie möglich ohne Transzendentalen Idealismus auskommen. Im Wintersemester 1967/68 bin ich nach Göttingen gegangen, um dort ein Studium der Germanistik, Klassischen Philologie und Philosophie zu beginnen. Schon im zweiten Semester habe ich die Philosophie anstelle der Germanistik als Hauptfach genommen. Die Philosophie in Göttingen wurde damals von Günther Patzig und Erhard Scheibe vertreten, der eine die Kapazität der klassischen griechischen Philosophie in Deutschland, der andere – mit einem massiven Hintergrund in der Mathematik und Physik – in der Wissenschaftstheorie und Logik zu Hause.

Wittgenstein zufolge ist die Welt alles, was der Fall ist. Aber ich selbst bin - nie anders denn hier und jetzt, d.h. immer in jeweils dieser Situation; es ist folglich eine Ontologie aus der Perspektive der ersten Person moglich, und zwar im Ausgang vom Begriff der Situation. Dabei ergibt sich, dass Situativitat letztlich zu verstehen ist als absolute (nicht auf unsere oder irgendeine Art von Aktivitat zuruckfuhrbare) Prozessualitat. In deren Dynamik einbegriffen durchlaufen wir - die Situierten - unsere jeweilige existenzielle (...) Lebensbahn von der Geburt zum Tod. So zeigt sich der alte Gedanke einer unhintergehbaren conditio humana neu aus der Perspektive der ersten Person gedacht. (shrink)

Georg Konrad Morgen (1909–1982) war von 1941 bis 1945 Richter in der SS-und Polizeigerichtsbarkeit. Er ermittelte gegen hochrangige SS-Offiziere wegen Korruption; ab Juni 1943 ermittelte er auch wegen Verbrechen in den Konzentrationslagern (Buchenwald, Dachau, Auschwitz). Im November 1943 konnte sich Morgen persönlich von den Vernichtungsanlagen in Auschwitz-Birkenau überzeugen. Nach eigenen Angaben versuchte er im Rahmen seiner Möglichkeiten als SS-Richter gegen diese Verbrechen vorzugehen. So verhaftete Morgen den Chef der Gestapo in Auschwitz, Maximilian Grabner, und er versuchte auch, einen Haftbefehl gegen (...) Adolf Eichmann zu erwirken. Dennoch war Morgen der SS verbunden. Das Buch versteht sich als moralische Biographie eines zutiefst ambivalenten Charakters: es zeichnet anhand der verfügbaren Archivmaterialien nach, wie Morgen dachte und urteilte. Der exponierte erste Aphorismus des lezten Teils von Ecce Homo ist einer der herausforderndsten und erschreckendsten in Nietzsches Werk. Er handelt im Kern von der "Umwerthung aller Werthe" alst einem "Akt höchster Selbstbesinnung der Menschheit", der Nietzche zum Schicksal geworden sei und durch den er nun zum Schicksal für die Philosophie und die Menschheit werde. Der Aphorismus galt vielen als Belag dafür, dass Nietzsches Wahnsinn bereits ausgebrochen sei: als Größenwahnsinn. Doch Ecce Homo lässt in seiner klaren und konsequenten Anlage so (...) wenig wie Der Antichrist, den es vorbereiten sollte, Zeichen der Verwirrung erkennen, und Nietzsche had auch früher schon herausfordernd von seiner Aufgabe gesprochen: als Einzelner die Menschheit und die Kultur auf eine neue Stufe zu heen. man wird Nietzsches Werk nur angemessen verstehen können, wenn man auch diesem Aphorismus seinen Ort in ihm geben kann. Die folgende Abhandlung versucht ein kontextuelle Interpretation des Aphorismus: eine Interpretation aus seinem eigenen Kontext, dem Kontext von Ecce Homo und Der Antichrist und dem Kontext von Nietzches Werk im ganzen.The first aphorism of the last chapter of Ecce Homo is oen of the most challenging and terrifying in Nietzsche's work. It essentially deals with the "reevaluation of all values" as an "act of the highest self-assessment of humanity" for which Nietzsche was fated and through which he would become a destiny for philosophy and humanity. The aphorism has served as evidence to some that Nietzsche's madness had already broken out - as megalomania. Yet the clear and careful construction of Ecce Homo, like The Antichrist for which it was supposed to pave the way, do not show any signs of confusion. And Nietzshe had already spoken of his task in a challenging manner: to raise humanity and culture to a new level as a single individual. Correctly understanding Nietzsche requires being able to integrate this aphorism into this work, too. The following essay provides an interpretation of this aphorism based on the context of Ecce Homo and The Antichrist as well as against the background of Nietzsche's work as a whole. (shrink)

When, after all doubts and despair not only in others, but in oneself, philosophy remains as the only possibility, then this path to truth can be no other than through the I that I am. „Whoever philosophizes, speaks of selfhood; those who do not, do not philosophize.“ After all despair only selfhood remains for me. Being oneself is the reason of all despair and also the reason of all hope. All philosophy must begin here. The philosopher who has explored the (...) problem of selfhood in the intellectual tradion of the West most fundamentally is J.G. Fichte. In the East we find he deepest investigation of selfhood in Zen-Buddhisms, particularly in the teachings of Zen-master Dogen. Both refer selfhood essentially to action: Fichte on „ought“ and striving, and Dogen on meditation, and thus they try to conceive the essence of selfhood. Here the basic relationship of knowledge and life and their relationship is examined for selfhood, and thus the relationship between philosophy and life as well as the problem of what is philosophy.Wenn nach allem Zweifel und aller Verzweifelung, nicht nur am Anderen, sondern auch an einem selbst, nur noch die Moglichkeit des Philosophierens bleibt, kann dieser Weg zur Wahrheit kein anderer sein als der durch das Ich, das ich bin. „Wer philosophiert, redet von Selbstsein; wer das nicht tut, philosophiert auch nicht.“. Nach aller Verzweifelung bleibt fur mich nur das Ich selbst. Das Selbstsein ist der Grund aller Verzweiflung und zugleich der Grund aller Hoffnung. Alle Philosophie muss hier beginnen. Der Philosoph, der in der geistigen Tradition des Westens das Problem des Selbstseins am grundlegendsten erortert hat, ist J.G. Fichte. In der des Ostens findet man die tiefste Erorterung des Selbstseins im Zen-Buddhismus, insbesonders beim Zenmeister Dogen. Beide beziehen das Selbstsein wesentlich auf das Handeln: Fichte auf das Sollen oder Streben und Dogen auf das Uben; und sie versuchen dadurch das Wesen des Selbstseins zu erfassen. Hier soll die Grundbeziehung von Wissen und Leben und ihr Verhaltnis zum Selbstsein untersucht und damit die Beziehung von Philosophie und Leben geklart werden und das Problem, was Philosophie ist.
