Jednym z kluczowych pojęć znaturalizowanej epistemologii, a także wyrastających z niej nauk kognitywistycznych jest znaturalizowane pojęcie reprezentacji poznawczej. W ramach tego znaturalizowanego pojęcia próbuje się jednolicie ująć pojęcie błędu reprezentacyjnego. W tekście pokazane są argumenty przeciwko adekwatności stosowania znaturalizowanego pojęcia błędu reprezentacyjnego oraz wątpliwości co do tak szerokiego programu naturalizacji zagadnień związanych z ludzką pojęciowością.

Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu wyjaśnienia poznania w teleosemantyce, która jest najbardziej zaawansowaną wersją reprezentacyjnej teorii umysłu. Krytyka reprezentacjonizmu ze strony teorii poznania ucieleśnionego powoduje, że założenia i tezy teorii reprezentacyjnych powinny zostać poddane analizie w kontekście pytania o adekwatność i sukces tego podejścia. Głównym założeniem tego podejścia jest teza, że procesy poznawcze jak percepcja, myślenie pojęciowe, wiedza itp. polegają na wytwarzaniu reprezentacji mentalnych i operowaniu nimi. Materialną składową reprezentacji mentalnych są stany neuronalne mózgu, będące nośnikami treści poznawczych. Głównym problemem (...) tego podejścia jest wyjaśnienie przypisywania stanom mózgu treści pełniących funkcję reprezentacji. Teleosemantyka łączy wyjaśnienie nadawania treści z zagadnieniem intencjonalności stanów mentalnych i tezą o reprezentacyjnym charakterze poznania. Jako punkt wyjścia, zostały omówione związki jakie zachodzą pomiędzy ogólnym pojęciem reprezentacji a intencjonalnością. Ogólna struktura reprezentacji jest strukturą spełniającą warunki intencjonalności zarówno w sensie „bycia o czymś”, jak i skierowania na przedmiot intencjonalny. Problemem do rozwiązania jest konstytuowanie relacji reprezentacji i przypisywanie treści stanom mózgu. Następnie podana została analizie propozycja rozwiązania tego problemu przedstawiona przez R. Millikan w jej teorii teleosemantyki. Upatruje ona źródło intencjonalności w biologicznych funkcjach zdobywania informacji niezbędnej do przetrwania. Funkcje te spełniane są przez relacje konstytuujące reprezentacje mentalne. Semantyka reprezentacji jest nadana przez cel funkcji biologicznej, natomiast warunki prawdziwości skorelowane są z własnościami otoczenia. Końcowa część poświęcona jest omówieniu ograniczeń takiego ujęcia i przedstawieniu krytyki ze strony stanowisk antyreprezentacyjnych. Prowadzi to do konkluzji, że teleosemantyka, rozwijając relacyjne rozumienie reprezentacji wnosi do wyjaśnienia poznania ważny element. Łączy pojęcie intencjonalności z reprezentowaniem świata w umyśle. Nie daje jednak jeszcze pełnej odpowiedzi na pytanie o konstytucję treści poznawczych. Nie powinna też być traktowana jako jedyny i uniwersalny sposób rozwiązania problemu treści, ale jako jedna z propozycji wyjaśnienia elementów poznania wyposażonych w treść intencjonalną. (shrink)

Das Thema des Artikels sind sprachliche Fehler, die bei der schriftlichen Übersetzung aus dem Deutschen ins Polnische und aus dem Polnischen ins Deutsche Vorkommen. Das Ziel des Artikels ist, ihre Vielschichtigkeit und Entstehungsmechanismen zu zeigen, die vor allem mit der sprachlichen Interferenz als einer der Hauptursachen für Übersetzungsfehler zusammenhän gen. Der Artikel stützt sich auf die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen, die in den Jahren 2004-2006 in der Abteilung für Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft am Lehrstuhl für Deutsche und Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft der Universität Łódź durchgeführt (...) wurden. Die Basis für das empirische Material bildeten hierbei durch Germanislikstudenten angefertigte schriftliche Übersetzungen. Am Anfang des Artikels werden verschiedene Definitionen und Klassifizierungsmöglichkeiten des sprachlichen Fehlers präsentiert. Desweiteren konzentriert sich der Autor auf das Phänomen der sprachlichen Interferenz und führt ihre Definitionen von W. Bondzio und T. Lewandowski an. Im weiteren Teil des Artikels wird die Frage der Interferenzmechanismen erörtert, zu denen die von J. Czochralski beschriebene Automatisierung der sprachlichen Strukturen, „zwischensprachliche Zuordnung“, „Übertragung des muttersprachlichen Modells“, fehlerhafte Erweiterung des Geltungsbereiches einer Aussage oder die Vermeidung besiimmter Elemente im System der Fremdsprache gehören. Im zweiten Teil des Artikels werden Ergebnisse der Forschungen präsentiert, deren Korpus einige Hunderte von deutsch-polnischen und polnisch-deutschen Übersetzungen waren, die von Studenten gemacht wurden. Die Fehler wurden zunächst nach der Richtung der Interferenz klassifiziert, dann nach den Sprachebenen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit bei der Fehlerbeschreibung wurde аиГ die möglichen Störungen der sprachlichen Kommunikation gelenkt. Die durchgeführten Untersuchungen untermauern und erweitern die Thesen aus der Fachliteratur: Die Fehler kommen auf verschiedenen Sprachebenen vor und stören in vielen Fällen die sprachliche Kommunikation, deren Herstellung der Hauptzweck einer jeden Übersetzung ist. Der Autor des Artikels postuliert, bei der Übersetzungsdidaktik mehr Aufmerksamkeit der sprachlichen Interferenz zu widmen, was seiner Meinung nach zu besseren Resultaten verhelfen würde. (shrink)

Autor artykułu broni tezy, że niektóre systemy obliczeniowe mogą mieć własności semantyczne. Wskazana została klasa systemów obliczeniowych, w których reprezentacje mogą mieć przynajmniej dwie własności: własność odnoszenia się do obiektów (desygnowanie) i własność wspomagania rozpoznawania obiektów oznaczanych przez daną reprezentację (konotowanie). Autor argumentuje także, że własności semantyczne reprezentacji nie zależą wyłącznie od architektury systemów obliczeniowych, w których te reprezentacje występują. Konkretna architektura obliczeniowa nie jest czynnikiem kluczowym, a bodaj najmniej istotne są same rodzaje struktur danych, które mają mieć (...) własności desygnowania czy konotowania. Własność desygnowania czy konotowania nie musi być zlokalizowana w samych reprezentacjach, może być własnością wyższego rzędu, powstającą w mechanizmie wyższego poziomu. Własności semantyczne reprezentacji mogą być wielorako realizowane. Systemy klasyczne, koneksjonistyczne czy też hybrydowe mogą równie dobrze mieć własności semantyczne, jak ich nie mieć. (shrink)

Artykuł oferuje nowe rozwiązanie problemu usytuowania umysłu (situated cognition), polegające na wykazaniu, jak i dlaczego ludzki umysł wydobywa z otoczenia nie informację, lecz wiedzę. Wiedza jest definiowana jako informacja posiadająca dla organizmu określoną wartość. Zaprezentowany został mechanizm, za pomocą którego owa wartość zostaje do bodźca informacyjnego wprowadzona. Usytuowanie – według tej interpretacji – polega na tym, że część poznania procesów człowieka wykonują za niego inni ludzie, mianowicie ci, którzy wytworzyli jego otoczenie poznawcze. Otoczenie poznawcze jest definiowane jako suma wartościowych bodźców (...) informacyjnych. Wiedza wydobyta z otoczenia definiuje różne style poznawcze człowieka, które – z uwagi na zewnętrzne źródło klasyfikacji – nazywane są ekotypami poznawczymi. Wyróżnione zostają cztery ekotypy poznawcze człowieka, na podstawie kształtu ich otoczenia poznawczego (rodzaje ofert ucieleśniających wartościową informację) oraz kompetencji poznawczych niezbędnych do wydobycia wiedzy z otoczenia. Despite the fact that radio documentaries broadcast mainly strong emotions, news values of this genre are also its essential feature. Therefore, it is necessary to describe the potential of such works to deliver knowledge about the transcendent world, which could be significant for the listeners. The aim of this article is to show theses made by scholars as regards radio documentaries. Researchers’ analyses are related to the genre’s potential possibilities of to broaden people’s minds and influence the recipient’s perception.

Większość analiz i wątków niniejszego artykułu była inspirowana lekturą książki Kena Goldberga The Robot in the Garden… (KenGoldberg (red.), Robot in the Garden. Telerobotics and Telepistemology in the Age of Internet, MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts 2001). Dotyczy to zwłaszcza rozmaitych rozszerzeń systemu poznawczego człowieka, możliwości i faktu poznawania na odległość oraz nowej filozoficznej subdyscypliny, jaką jest dzisiaj teleepistemologia. Główny motyw jest jednak starszy, bardziej podstawowy i niezależny od koncepcji Goldberga oraz opisanego przezeń eksperymentu Telegarden. Stanowi go obawa przed nastaniem epoki (...) powszechnej, interaktywnej halucynacji – lęk przed ucieczką od świata realnego w stronę rozmaitych środowisk wirtualnych, obawa przed pełnym zanurzeniem się (imersją) w świat Matrixa. To z tego powodu od kilku dekad poszukuję coraz lepszych określeń poznania źródłowego, a problematyka źródłowości i granic wiedzy źródłowej, nieodmiennie, jest według mnie największy wyzwaniem każdej epistemologii: w każdej jej odmianie i na każdym etapie jej rozwoju. Neuronauki dokonały znacznego postępu w rozumieniu wyższych czynności poznawczych, w tym procesów decyzyjnych. Brakuje jednak zarówno prostych modeli, które pozwolą wyobrazić sobie te procesy, jak i głębszej refleksji nad wpływem tych wyników na zrozumienie natury umysłu, rozproszenia obaw, że nie jesteśmy tylko automatami. Płodny punkt widzenia na kwestię reprezentacji mentalnych daje próba zrozumienia, w jaki sposób informacja reprezentowana jest przez mózgi, jak w przybliżony sposób opisać stany mózgu tak, by można je było zinterpretować jako reprezentacje mentalne odnoszące się do (...) umysłu. Czym jest w nas to, co podejmuje decyzje? Jest to kluczowa kwestia dla zrozumienia wielu zagadnień klasycznej filozofii, od wolnej woli i problemu ciała i umysłu poczynając. Chociaż iluzja homunkulusa jest silna można się od niej uwolnić. Analiza procesów podejmowania decyzji wymaga zrozumienia w jaki sposób zakodowane są w mózgu najprostsze pojęcia. Jedynie przez aproksymację fizycznych stanów mózgu, zawierających znacznie więcej informacji niż stany mentalne, możemy dokonać istotnego postępu w rozumieniu i opisie reprezentacji mentalnych, przydatnych nie tylko filozofom, ale też mających zastosowania w analizie języka naturalnego, kategoryzacji pojęć w psychologii i architekturach kognitywnych w sztucznej inteligencji. Ucieleśnienie jak i enaktywizm są dla rozwoju reprezentacji pojęć bardzo istotne ale nie wystarczające. Po analizie współczesnej wiedzy o reprezentacji pojęć w mózgu zaprezentowano podejście oparte o język układów dynamicznych, które oferuje dość prosty język, pozwalający zrozumieć zaskakujące, często nieracjonalne decyzje podejmowane przez ludzi. Dzięki symulacjom komputerowym można się spodziewać znacznego postępu w rozumieniu reprezentacji mentalnych i wyższych czynności poznawczych, w szczególności procesów podejmowania decyzji. (shrink)

The main thesis of the paper is very simple, namely that the cognitive system is a representational system. The cognitive system will be defined as a system which is able to realize cognitive functions such as perception, symbolic thinking, understanding and reflection. Such a system is further characterized as: cognitively open and at the same time relatively isolated, representational, structurally complex and many-dimensional, dynamic and having functional plasticity (cognitively adaptive) and also having the capacity for self-determination. The analysis will be (...) focused on the characterization of representation (which will be defined as a certain kind of content) and on the types of representations in the cognitive system (i.e. perceptual and conceptual representations, the representation of the body and the representation of "self"). Tradycyjne teorie psychologii moralności podkreślają rolę rozumowania i „wyższych procesów poznawczych”, podczas gdy ostatnie prace z tego zakresu uwypuklają udział emocji. W niniejszym artykule rozpatruję dane pochodzące z neuroobrazowania wspierające teorię sądzenia moralnego, zgodnie z którą zarówno procesy „poznawcze”, jak i emocjonalne pełnią istotne a czasami wzajemnie konkurencyjne role. Dane te wskazują, że rejony mózgu związane z kontrolą poznawczą (przednia część zakrętu obręczy i grzbietowo boczna kora przedczołowa) są zaangażowane w rozwiązywanie trudnych moralnych dylematów, w których wartości utylitarne wymagają naruszenia (...) „osobistej” sfery moralnej, co wiąże się ze wzrostem aktywności rejonów mózgu związanych z emocjami i poznaniem społecznym (przyśrodkowa kora przedczołowa, górna bruzda skroniowa, tylna część zakrętu obręczy, bieguny skroniowe, ciało migdałowate). Odkryliśmy także, że aktywność w~obszarach mózgu obejmujących przednią część grzbietowo bocznej kory przedczołowej prognozuje różnice w sądzeniu moralnym, w odmiennych warunkach — obszary te wykazują większą aktywność podczas wydawania sądów o~charakterze utylitarnym. Przypuszczam też, że coraz lepsze rozumienie fizjologicznych i neuronaukowych podstaw wydawania sądów moralnych może mieć wpływ na rozwiązywanie dylematów moralnych w~świecie realnym. (shrink)

The article presents Moore’s concept of the naturalistic fallacy, with particular reference to two interpretations of the term: According to the interpretation, the naturalistic fallacy consists in identifying the quality of „goodness” with any other qualities, while according to the second, naturalistic fallacy would consist in identifying „good” with the natural qualities. Further, distinction is made between the naturalistic fallacy and its consequences which are sometimes confused with the fallacy itself by some authors.

The paper is an attempt to present the cognitive functions of mathematics in relation to empirical sciences. Firstly - mathematics is a 'generator' of mathematical categories used in natural sciences. In this sense mathematics is a science about the tools of cognition which it creates or perfects. Secondly - mathematics plays the role of 'prism' through which we view the world because some phenomena e.g. from the micro- and macro-world can only be seen through the prism of mathematical structures and (...) notions. And thirdly - mathematics is also a 'selector' of cognitive content. It eliminates from the cognitive field these phenomena which presently can't be grasped by the existing mathematical structures. It is worth noticing that the functions of mathematics: 'selector' and 'prism' are complementary in some sense; although they are opposites ('prism' lets you 'see' something, and 'selector' restricts this 'seeing'), they don't exclude each other. What would it be like to have a materialistic theory of language? Are humans able (not in principle but in practise) to develop such a theory? The author tries to show that the answer to the second question is „No”. The main argument is that the qualities of the theory in question would go far beyond what seems available for creatures of limited cognitive power.

This paper considers Adam Grobler's fallibilism as an attractive alternative for both epistemological fundationalism and nihilism. Fallibilism claims that science is only a collection of temporary opinions, which entails rejecting of the idea of justification in aid of establishing critical preferences. In Grobler's thought that role is played by the conclusion to the best explanation (abductionism). Grobler's ideas dismantle the belief that relativity implies relativism. This paper deals with several Grobler's problems, such as theory-ladeness thesis (interpretation of observation), problems of (...) facts, litigation of absolutism with relativism. I claim that problem of epistemic interests should be viewed as theoretical, e.g. considered as an element of our background knowledge, or wider philosophical framework (for example metaphysics). Some formulations of local internal realism are subject to paradox of self-referentiality. (shrink)

NATURALIZATION OF THE ABSOLUTE. The application of evolution’s explanatory mechanism to the study of religion The question which has troubled scholars for many decades (or even centuries) is the origin and function of religion. In this article, the author tries to sketch an outline of a new and promising paradigm in the study of religion, i.e. the evolutionary theories of religion. It is widely held belief that this enterprise should further provide an explanatory framework for an enormous amount of data (...) about human religiosity. Such an aim requires giving an overview of the three fundamental Darwinian theories which pertain to this extremely multifaceted phenomenon. The sequence in the overview is like this: (a) a historical and conceptual background, (b) a sociobiological account, (c) a cognitive account, (d) a memetic account. The paper also comprises a short presentation of so-called co-evolutionary perspective, which integrates the above-mentioned outlooks, and some shortcomings of the whole evolutionary program of the study of religion. Książka Philipa Goffa jest pozycją z zakresu szeroko rozumianej filozofii umysłu z wątkami filozofii i metodologii nauk przyrodniczych. Łączy w sobie dość umiejętnie styl popularnonaukowy z fragmentami o charakterze bardziej systematycznej analizy naukowej oraz filozoficznej. Poza centralnym tematem rozważań, jakim jest kwestia panpsychizmu, znajdujemy w niej m.in. odniesienia do znanych w filozofii świadomości eksperymentów myślowych, jak: „jak to jest być nietoperzem?”, „pokój Marii”, „chiński pokój” czy problem „filozoficznych zombie”. Mimo licznych uwag krytycznych książkę należy uznać za względnie wartościową. In philosophical literature terms: „natural theology” (or „rational theology”) and „philosophical theology” are used as exchangeable. The author argues that natural and philosophical theology are different philosophical disciplines. It is possible to point out a philosophic theology, different from natural theology, the former aims are not only supposed to show that God exists but to unifícate, interpret and explain (understand) religious faith and her tasks are not primary apologetic. The author considers that the aims of the latter discipline are bound (...) with the preference of cognitive values such as certainty, rationality and being able to use one ’s rationality to convince your opponent. In the end of this article author introduces a sketch of method of philosophical theology as different form natural theology, which could overcome one-sided views about role of philosophical argument in study of religious belief and faith and their propositional content and lead not only to a more adequate analysis of the researched reality but also to the development of other disciplines. The reason for my disagreement with Tadeusz Skalski is my objection to his attempts at demonizing the problems connected with the functioning of mind as presented in his essay. In my opinion, the inclination of the author towards demonization stems from the fact that he accepts an extremely limited „natural picture of the world”, a picture which is both reductionistic and mechanistic. It is no wonder then that neither intentionality nor the usage of language fits into this picture and - (...) what amounts to the same thing - can be naturalized. Both seem to be magic phenomena. Moreover, the range of „purely natural” categories in this picture seems to be so limited that even the behaviour of a cat which comes to his master when he whistles for it - i.e. which knows what the whistling means - cannot be described. The behaviour of chimpanzees which have an inborn knowledge that snakes are dangerous and should be avoided cannot be described on this view either. Hence, it is no surprise that each theory of how mind is functioning which has been constructed by a natural philosopher has a status of a „magic theory”. (shrink)
