A treatise on toleration and other essays. Voltaire & Joseph McCabe - 1935 - Amherst, N.Y.: Prometheus Books. Edited by Joseph McCabe.
Voltaire (1694-1778), novelist, dramatist, poet, philosopher, historian, and satirist, was one of the most renowned figures of the Age of Enlightenment. In this collection of anti-clerical works from the last twenty-five years of Voltaire's life, he roundly attacks the philosophical optimism of the deists, the so-called inspiration of the Bible, the papacy, and vulgar superstition. These great works reveal Voltaire not only as a polemicist but also as a profound humanitarian. Selections include "Poem on the Lisbon Disaster," "We Must Take (...)

Who am I?: The influence of affect on the working self-concept.Linda M. Isbell, Joseph McCabe, Kathleen C. Burns & Elicia C. Lair - 2013 - Cognition and Emotion 27 (6):1073-1090.
Two experiments investigated the impact of affect on the working self-concept. Following an affect induction, participants completed the Twenty Statements Test (TST) to assess their working self-concepts. Participants in predominantly happy and angry states used more abstract statements to describe themselves than did participants in predominantly sad and fearful states. Evaluations of the statements that participants generated (Experiment 2) demonstrate that these effects are not the result of (1) participants describing positively and negatively valenced information at different levels of abstraction, (...)

The Social Record of Christianity.Joseph McCabe - 2000 - Book Tree.
Includes The Lies and Fallacies of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Shows how Christianity has controlled the functions of society. Western civilization has been dependent upon the Christian religion for its ethical and moral teachings and, ultimately, its conduct. McCabe demonstrates, however, that the moral and ethical conduct of western civilization was never good and the chief cause of this has been Christianity. The Renaissance was a rebirth or revival of art, literature, and learning, with the major catalyst being Martin Luthers (...)

  7. Aquinas, Prudence, and Proactive Parenting: The "Treatise" Applied.Joseph Mccabe - 1996 - Dissertation, University of Ottawa (Canada)
This dissertation is on prudence and its role in child-rearing. More specifically, it is on how Thomas Aquina's Treatise on Prudence can with profit be used to help parents today in the task of raising their children well. It is the author's conviction that Aquinas has a unique and important contribution to make to the contemporary debate on 'parenting', so-called, and the dissertation is a defense of that conviction. The paper is divided into three Parts, with each Part consisting of (...)

    Mill's ‘Modern’ Radicalism Re-Examined: Joseph Persky's The Political Economy of Progress.Helen McCabe - 2020 - Utilitas 32 (2):147-164.
In The Political Economy of Progress, Joseph Persky argues for seeing John Stuart Mill as a consistent ‘radical’ with much to offer modern ‘radical’ political discourse. In this article, I further this claim with consideration of Mill's political philosophy, as well as his political economy. Exploring Mill's commitment to radical reordering of the economy, as well as emphasizing his commitment to egalitarianism; his historically nuanced view of ‘the progress of justice’; and his desire for a transformation of social relations (...)

    Mill's Socialism Re-examined.Joseph Persky - 2020 - Utilitas 32 (2):165-180.
McCabe and Turner raise a number of perceptive points concerning my treatment of John Stuart Mill's political economy of progress and its relation to socialism. In giving context to their points this article first tries to clarify Mill's understanding of socialism as anchored in his positive classical economics. Mill the utilitarian philosopher endorses socialism, but he anticipates its arrival based on his materialist understanding of history. In this materialist context, the article argues that Mill expects the economy of worker (...)

  29. The Stoic Theory of Implanted Preconceptions.Matt Jackson-McCabe - 2004 - Phronesis 49 (4):323-347.
A number of late Stoic sources describe either ethical concepts or a supposed universal belief in gods as being innate in the human animal. Though Chrysippus himself is known to have spoken of "implanted preconceptions" (ἔμφυτοι προλήψεις) of good and bad, scholars have typically argued that the notion of innate concepts of any kind would have been entirely incompatible with his theory of knowledge. Both Epictetus' notion of innate concepts of good and bad and the references to an innate belief (...)

The influence of instructions and terminology on the accuracy of remember–know judgments.David P. McCabe & Lisa D. Geraci - 2009 - Consciousness and Cognition 18 (2):401-413.
The remember–know paradigm is one of the most widely used procedures to examine the subjective experience associated with memory retrieval. We examined how the terminology and instructions used to describe the experiences of remembering and knowing affected remember–know judgments. In Experiment 1 we found that using neutral terms, i.e., Type A memory and Type B memory, to describe the experiences of remembering and knowing reduced remember false alarms for younger and older adults as compared to using the terms Remember and (...)

    Nietzsche Cluster: Introduction.Joseph Ward - 2013 - International Journal of Philosophical Studies 21 (1):1 - 2.
Nietzsche was a philosopher who prided himself, in deliberate contradistinction with previous philosophers, on his ‘historical sense’. But this leaves many questions unanswered about the precise role of the historical in Nietzsche’s philosophy. Perhaps most importantly, can the conception of genealogy in Nietzsche’s later philosophy, as a revised historical method, be taken to represent his mature philosophical methodology in general? I argue, firstly, that there is considerable continuity between Nietzsche’s conceptions of history in the early essay ‘On the uses and (...)

Academic integrity policies at 200 institutions of higher education were examined for the presence of academic prohibitions against the nonmedical use of prescription stimulants or any other cognitive enhancing drug. Researchers used online search tools to locate policy handbooks in a stratified random sample of IHE’s drawn from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System database, searching for NMUPS/CED use as violations of either academic integrity or alcohol and other drug policies. Of 191 academic integrity policies found online, NMUPS/CED prohibitions were (...)

    Plato’s Individuals.Allan Silverman & Mary Margaret McCabe - 1997 - Philosophical Review 106 (3):470.
Plato's Individuals is rich and rewarding. McCabe's reading will compel us to examine anew the presuppositions we bring to the enterprise of understanding Plato. Her devotion to showing that her thesis is found almost everywhere in the corpus is noteworthy. At times she also seems to strain to assimilate modern and Platonic concerns. If one can accept that Plato's tripartite soul goes over into something we might recognize as the problem of personal identity, it can only be because we (...)

On interpreting the relationship between remember–know judgments and confidence: The role of instructions☆.Lisa Geraci, David P. McCabe & Jimmeka J. Guillory - 2009 - Consciousness and Cognition 18 (3):701-709.
Two experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that the nature of the remember–know instructions given to participants influences whether these responses reflect different memory states or different degrees of memory confidence. Participants studied words and nonwords, a variable that has been shown to dissociate confidence from remember–know judgments and were given a set of published remember–know instructions that either emphasized know judgments as highly confident or as less confident states of recognition. Experiment 1 replicated the standard finding showing that (...)

  47. Form and Argument in Late Plato.Christopher Gill & Mary Margaret McCabe (eds.) - 1996 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Why did Plato put his philosophical arguments into dialogues, rather than presenting them in a plain and readily understandable fashion? A group of distinguished scholars here offer answers to this question by studying the relation between form and argument in his late dialogues. These penetrating studies show that the literary structure of the dialogues is of vital importance in the ongoing interpretation of Plato.

In this study meal sharing is used as a way of quantifying food transfers between households. Traditional food-sharing studies measure the flow of resources between households. Meal sharing, in contrast, measures food consumption acts according to whether one is a host or a guest in the household as well as the movement of people between households in the context of food consumption. Our goal is to test a number of evolutionary models of food transfers, but first we argue that before (...)
