Les principes de la didactique narrative de la philosophie sont justifiés théoriquement. Or, il y a un fossé entre la théorie et la pratique, qui n’est comblé ni par Rehfus ni par Martens. Martens définit les philosophes comme experts de certaines communautés scientifiques. Le dialogue avec les étudiants, en tant qu’activité pragmatique systématique, est le lieu de la philosophie. « La didactique de la philosophie est ŕ la fois la connaissance et l’aptitude ŕ l’autodétermination commune. » Cependant, ce partenariat dialogique (...) reste une construction postulée. La position de Rehfus affirme la męme chose, en prétendant que la conscience de la modernité traverse une crise et que, par conséquent, la philosophie pourrait aider ŕ rétablir l’identité du moi. Pourtant, l’école ne peut résoudre le problčme d’évaluation du processus de rétablissement du moi. Les concepts et les constructions théoriques ne sont toutefois pas identiques ŕ la réalité: ce ne sont que des instruments heuristiques. La société et l’histoire ne sont pas des constructions monistes qui doivent ętre saisies par la pensée, mais des possibilités qui doivent ętre comprises dans le fond. Adopter le récit contribue ŕ la propédeutique scientifique en fournissant une approche valable pour la narration. (shrink)

Doch es besteht eine Kluft zwischen Theorie und Praxis, die weder von Rehfus noch von Martens überbrückt wurde. Martens definiert die Philosophen als Experten einer bestimmten wissenschaftlichen Gemeinde. Der Dialog mit den Schülern, als eine systematisch unternommene pragmatische Wende, liege im Bereich der Philosophie. Philosophische Didaktik sei beides, Erkenntnis und Fähigkeit zur gemeinsamen Selbstbestimmung. Trotzdem bleibt die oben genannte dialogische Partnerschaft ein postuliertes Konstrukt. Rehfus bestätigt mit seiner Einstellung das Gleiche, (...) indem er behauptet, dass das Modernitätsbewusstsein eine Krise durchläuft und dass folglich die Philosophie bei der Wiederherstellung der Ego-Identität hilfreich sein kann. Doch die Schule könne das Problem der Evaluierung des Ego-Restaurierungsprozesses nicht lösen. Allerdings sind Konzepte und theoretische Konstrukte mit der Wirklichkeit nicht identisch; sie sind heuristische Instrumente. Die Gesellschaft und die Geschichte sind keine monistischen Konstrukte, die der Verstand nachzuvollziehen hat, sondern Möglichkeiten, die in ihrem Grunde zu erfassen sind. Die Aneignung der Narration trägt zur wissenschaftlichen Propädeutik bei, weil es den richtigen Zugang zur Narration sichert. (shrink)

The modern outlines of philosophical didactics are justified on theoretical grounds. But there is a gap between theory and practice, which is bridged neither by Rehfus nor by Martens. Martens defines philosophers as experts of a certain scientific community. Dialogue with students, as a pragmatic turn undertaken systematically, is the place of philosophy. “Philosophical didactics is both: knowledge and ability of joint self-determination.” However, the above dialogical partnership remains a postulated construct. Rehfus’s position states the same, claiming that the consciousness (...) of modernity is going through a crisis, and that, accordingly, philosophy may help to restore ego-identity. Yet, the school can not solve the problem of evaluation of the process of ego restoration. Concepts and theoretical constructs are, nevertheless, not identical with reality, they are heuristic instruments. Society and history are not monistic constructs to be comprehended by the mind, but possibilities to be comprehended fundamentally. Taking the narrative upon oneself contributes to scientific propaedeutics by providing an approach valid for narration. (shrink)

Rethinking the relationship between eighteenth-century Pietist traditions and Enlightenment thought and practice, _The Practices of Enlightenment_ unravels the complex and often neglected religious origins of modern secular discourse. Mapping surprising routes of exchange between the religious and aesthetic writings of the period and recentering concerns of authorship and audience, this book revitalizes scholarship on the Enlightenment. By engaging with three critical categories--aesthetics, authorship, and the public sphere--_The Practices of Enlightenment_ illuminates the relationship between religious and aesthetic modes of reflective contemplation, (...) autobiography and the hermeneutics of the self, and the discursive creation of the public sphere. Focusing largely on German intellectual life, this critical engagement also extends to France through Rousseau and to England through Shaftesbury. Rereading canonical works and lesser-known texts by Goethe, Lessing, and Herder, the book challenges common narratives recounting the rise of empiricist philosophy, the idea of the "sensible" individual, and the notion of the modern author as celebrity, bringing new perspective to the Enlightenment concepts of instinct, drive, genius, and the public sphere. This contribution to a set of case studies, titled “In the Humanities Classroom,” focuses on one session of a Columbia University seminar, Aesthetics and Philosophy. A teologia de Karl Rahner teve um grande impacto no concílio Vaticano II e no tempo que se Ihe seguiu. Em ordem a compreender-se o seu argumento teológico é importante tomar em conta as suas bases filosóficas, especialmente a sua compreensão do "método transcendental". Neste sentido, opresente artigo começa por prestar atenção à abordagem transcendental de Kant. Em seguida investiga a transformação do método transcendental operada na obra de Joseph Maréchal, o qual fez uso dele em ordem a demonstrar a (...) orientação dinâmica do conhecimento humano e da sua decisão em favor do "Absoluto do Ser". Deste modo, o autor do artigo demonstra até que ponto Maréchal fornece uma fundação para a metafísica, a qual é bem diferente da metafísica do racionalismo que Kant tinha criticado. Inspirado por Heidegger, Rahner deu a esta abordagem transcendental uma viragem fenomenológica, ao mesmo tempo que forneceu uma reinterpretação de termos-chave da metafísica clássica, a qual encara como não dependente de uma cosmologia ultrapassada e que ao mesmo tempo é de grande relevância existencial para a vida humana. O artigo visa demonstrar, deste modo, até que ponto esta reinterpretação influenciou o pensamento teológico de K. Rahner. /// The theology of Karl Rahner had an enormous impact on Vatican II and the time following. In order to understand his theological reasoning it is important to take into account his philosophical foundations, especially his understanding of the "transcendental method". This article pays attention to the transcendental approach of Kant. Then it investigates the transformation of transcendental method in the work of Joseph Maréchal who used it to show the constitutive function of the dynamic orientation of human knowledge and decision towards the "Absolute of Being". He thereby provides a foundation for metaphysics, which is quite different from the metaphysics of rationalism which Kant had criticised. Inspired by Heidegger, Rahner gave this transcendental approach a phenomenological turn. He provided a reinterpretation of key terms of classical metaphysics, which is not dependent on an outmoded cosmology and which is at the same time of existential relevance for human life. Spectroscopy is a scientific topic at the interface between Chemistry and Physics, which is taught at high school level in relation with its fundamental applications in Analytical Chemistry. In the first part of the paper, the topic of spectroscopy is analyzed having in mind the well-known Johnstone’s triangle of chemistry education, putting in evidence the way spectroscopy is usually taught at the three levels of chemical knowledge: macroscopic/phenomenological, sub-microscopic/molecular and symbolic ones. Among these three levels, following Johnstone’s recommendations the macroscopic (...) one is the most useful for high school students who learn spectroscopy for the first time. Starting from these premises, in the second part of the paper, we propose a didactic sequence which is inspired by the historical evolution of spectroscopic instruments from the first spectroscopes invented by Gustav Kirchhoff and Robert Bunsen in 1860 to the UV–vis spectrophotometers which became common since the 1960s. The idea behind our research is to analyze the conceptual advancements through the history of spectroscopy and to identify the key episodes/experiments and spectroscopic instruments. For each of them, a didactic activity, typically an experiment, is then proposed underlining the relevant aspects from the chemistry education point of view. The present paper is the occasion to reflect on the potentialities of an historical approach combined with a laboratorial one, and to discuss the role of historical instruments and related technological improvements to teach spectroscopy. Hilary Putnam is one of the world’s leading philosophers. His highly original and often provocative ideas have set the agenda for a variety of debates in philosophy of science, philosophy of mind and philosophy of language. In the literature, the pragmatic dimension of metaphors has been clearly acknowledged. Metaphors are regarded as having different possible uses, especially pursuing persuasion. However, an analysis of the specific conversational purposes that they can be aimed at achieving in a dialogue and their adequacy thereto is still missing. In this chapter, we will address this issue focusing on the classical distinction between the explanatory and persuasive uses of metaphors, which is, however, complex to draw at an analytical level and often (...) blurred and controversial also from a theoretical point of view. Building on the analysis of explanation in different theories and fields of study, we show how it can be conceived as characterized by a cognitive and a pragmatic dimension, where the transference of understanding is used pragmatically for different dialogical goals - such as informing, making a joint decision, and most importantly persuading. In this sense, the cognitive effects of understanding are not incompatible with a persuasive dialogical purpose. This theoretical proposal will be applied to examples drawn from the medical context, to show how a pragmatic approach to explanation can account for the complexity of the cases that can be found in actual dialogical contexts. Catalogue of an exhibition which addresses contemporary printmaking issues/concerns within a Tasmanian context.

Probability as understood today, namely as a quantitative notion expressible by means of a function ranging in the interval between 0–1, took shape in the mid-17th century, and presents both a mathematical and a philosophical aspect. Of these two sides, the second is by far the most controversial, and fuels a heated debate, still ongoing. After a short historical sketch of the birth and developments of probability, its major interpretations are outlined, by referring to the work of their most prominent (...) representatives. The final section addresses the question of whether any of such interpretations can presently be considered predominant, which is answered in the negative. (shrink)

My aim in this paper is to investigate what epistemic role, if any, do appeals to representations play in cognitive neuroscience. I suggest that while at present they seem to play something in between a minimal and a substantive explanatory role, there is reason to believe that representations have a substantial contribution to the construction of neuroscientic explanations of cognitive phenomena.

The coloniality of power introduces the basic and universal social classification of the population of the planet in terms of the idea of race, a replacing of relations of superiority and inferiority established through (...) domination with naturalized understandings of inferiority and superiority. In this essay, Lugones introduces a systemic understanding of gender constituted by colonial/modernity in terms of multiple relations of power. This gender system has a light and a dark side that depict relations, and beings in relation as deeply different and thus as calling for very different patterns of violent abuse. Lugones argues that gender itself is a colonial introduction, a violent introduction consistently and contemporarily used to destroy peoples, cosmologies, and communities as the building ground of the "civilized" West. In this Chapter, Maria Kronfeldner discusses whether psychological essentialism is a necessary part of dehumanization. This involves different elements of essentialism, and a narrow and a broad way of conceptualizing psychological essentialism, the first akin to natural kind thinking, the second based on entitativity. She first presents authors that have connected essentialism with dehumanization. She then introduces the error theory of psychological essentialism regarding the category of the human, and distinguishes different elements of psychological essentialism. On that basis, Kronfeldner (...) connects historical, socio-psychological, and philosophical insights in order to show that although essentialism can act as a catalyst for dehumanization, it is not necessary for it. Examples relate to dehumanization in the context of colonialism and evolutionary thinking, to the history of dehumanizing women from Aristotle to 19th-century craniology, and to contemporary self-dehumanization and ‘lesser mind’ attribution.
