The power of routine and special observations: producing civility in a public acute psychiatric unit.Bridget Hamilton & Elizabeth Manias - 2008 - Nursing Inquiry 15 (3):178-188.
The power of routine and special observations: producing civility in a public acute psychiatric unit This study directly addresses controlling aspects of psychiatric nursing practice, which are currently marginalised in practice and research. We first consider the discursive tensions surrounding the mandated goal of social control in public acute psychiatric units, particularly referring to those units located within medical hospitals. We attest to the enduring social control mandate in psychiatric nursing and explore ways in which it is enacted.Specific nursing practices (...)

Social science and linguistic text analysis of nurses’ records: a systematic review and critique.Niels Buus & Bridget Elizabeth Hamilton - 2016 - Nursing Inquiry 23 (1):64-77.
The two aims of the paper were to systematically review and critique social science and linguistic text analyses of nursing records in order to inform future research in this emerging area of research. Systematic searches in reference databases and in citation indexes identified 12 articles that included analyses of the social and linguistic features of records and recording. Two reviewers extracted data using established criteria for the evaluation of qualitative research papers. A common characteristic of nursing records was the economical (...)

Ethical Standards for Business Lobbying: Some Practical Suggestions.J. Brooke Hamilton & David Hoch - 1997 - Business Ethics Quarterly 7 (3):117-129.
Rather than being inherently evil, business lobbying is a socially responsible activity which needs to be restrained by ethical standards. To be effective in a business environment, traditional ethical standards need to be translated into language which business persons can speak comfortably. Economical explanations must also be available to explain why ethical standards are appropriate in business. Eight such standards and their validating arguments are proposed with examples showing their use. Internal dialogues regarding the ethics of lobbying objectives and tactics (...)

II—Rhythm and Stasis: A Major and Almost Entirely Neglected Philosophical Problem.Andy Hamilton - 2011 - Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society 111 (1pt1):25-42.
This article develops a dynamic account of rhythm as ‘order‐in‐movement’ that opposes static accounts of rhythm as abstract time, as essentially a pattern of possibly unstressed sounds and silences. This dynamic account is humanistic: it focuses on music as a humanly‐produced, sonorous phenomenon, privileging the human as opposed to the abstract, or the organic or mechanical. It defends the claim that movement is the most fundamental conceptualization of music—the basic category in terms of which it is experienced—and suggests, against Scruton, (...)

Google in China: A Manager-Friendly Heuristic Model for Resolving Cross-Cultural Ethical Conflicts.J. Brooke Hamilton, Stephen B. Knouse & Vanessa Hill - 2009 - Journal of Business Ethics 86 (2):143-157.
Management practitioners and scholars have worked diligently to identify methods for ethical decision making in international contexts. Theoretical frameworks such as Integrative Social Contracts Theory (Donaldson and Dunfee, 1994, Academy of Management Review 19, 252–284) and more recently the Global Business Citizenship Approach [Wood et al., 2006, Global Business Citizenship: A Transformative Framework for Ethics and Sustainable Capitalism. (M. E. Sharpe, Armonk, NY)] have produced innovations in practice. Despite these advances, many managers have difficulty implementing these theoretical concepts in daily (...)

  17. God Vs. The Gavel: Religion and the Rule of Law.Marci A. Hamilton & Edward R. Becker - 2005 - Cambridge University Press.
God vs. the Gavel challenges the pervasive assumption that all religious conduct deserves constitutional protection. While religious conduct provides many benefits to society, it is not always benign. The thesis of the book is that anyone who harms another person should be governed by the laws that govern everyone else - and truth be told, religion is capable of great harm. This may not sound like a radical proposition, but it has been under assault since the 1960s. The majority of (...)

Intellectual property rights, the bioeconomy and the challenge of biopiracy.Chris Hamilton - 2008 - Genomics, Society and Policy 4 (3):1-19.
The last several decades have seen the emergence of intellectual property rights (IPRs), especially patents, as a key issue in developments across the fields of law, the economy and the biosciences, and as part of the burgeoning "bioeconomy". This paper examines how the categories of nature and knowledge, so vital to IPR regimes that support bioeconomy-type projects, are challenged by the allegation of biopiracy. It reflects on the relationship between nature, IPR and the bioeconomy, and presents an example of how (...)

    Sustainable global health practice: An ethical imperative?Bridget Pratt - 2022 - Bioethics 36 (8):874-882.
We are in the midst of a crisis of climate change and environmental degradation that will only get worse, unless significant changes are rapidly made. Globally, the healthcare sector causes a large share of our total environmental footprint: 4.4% of greenhouse gases. Sustainable healthcare has emerged as a way for healthcare sectors in high‐income countries to help mitigate climate change by reducing their emissions. Whether global health should be sustainable and what ethical grounds might exist to support such a claim (...)

The Ethics of Selective Mandatory Vaccination for COVID-19.Bridget M. Williams - 2022 - Public Health Ethics 15 (1):74-86.
With evidence of vaccine hesitancy in several jurisdictions, the option of making COVID-19 vaccination mandatory requires consideration. In this paper I argue that it would be ethical to make the COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for older people who are at highest risk of severe disease, but if this were to occur, and while there is limited knowledge of the disease and vaccines, there are not likely to be sufficient grounds to mandate vaccination for those at lower risk. Mandating vaccination for those (...)

    A multidimensional account of social justice for global health research.Bridget Pratt - 2023 - Bioethics 37 (7):624-636.
A transformation of global health research is urgently needed if it is to eliminate long‐standing structural inequities within the field and help reduce global health disparities. Ethics has a key role to play in fostering such a transformation: it can help identify what the transformation should entail. Yet, ethics scholarship linking global health research to greater equity and social justice has limited authority and capacity to do so for two related reasons: it largely fails to apply theories and concepts of (...)

A Framework to Link International Clinical Research to the Promotion of Justice in Global Health.Bridget Pratt & Bebe Loff - 2013 - Bioethics 27 (3):387-396.
How international research might contribute to justice in global health has not been substantively addressed by bioethics. Theories of justice from political philosophy establish obligations for parties from high-income countries owed to parties from low and middle-income countries. We have developed a new framework that is based on Jennifer Ruger's health capability paradigm to strengthen the link between international clinical research and justice in global health. The ‘research for health justice’ framework provides direction on three aspects of international clinical research: (...)
