This volume--one of several in a series on contemporary philosophy in Italy and in the U. Besides the expected articles on Croce, Gentile, existentialism, neo-scholasticism, and the philosophy of history, there are, among others, articles on analytic philosophy, marxism, and the philosophy of science. The appendix supplies information on Italian philosophic centers, organizations, and journals, as well as brief (...)

This volume is an introduction to the subject of guilt in the light of present day philosophic and psychoanalytic thought. The author presents a sweeping account of guilt "in the subject," the guilt "of the subject," guilt in relation to morality and in relation to the feeling of guilt in the psychological domain, guilt as illusion, and guilt as reality.-R. Viewing Husserl's posthumous works in the light of their evolution, Pedroli considers his transcendental phenomenology and his efforts towards the foundation of philosophy as a rigorous science. An ample bibliography is appended. --R. D. G.

    La Scepsi Etica di Giuseppe Rensi. [REVIEW]D. G. R. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (4):695-695.
A fine introduction to Rensi's work in general, since the development of his ethical thought is presented in relation to the rest of his philosophy. The author also traces its connections to Kant, Spinoza, and other modern philosophers. The work is more expository than critical; contains an extensive bibliography on Rensi.--R. D. G.

An uncritical presentation of Lavelle's theory of value. Though the author rightly attempts to relate Lavelle's axiology to his psychology and ontology, the relation of value to Lavelle's philosophy as a whole remains sketchy.--R. D. G.

Réflexions métaphysiques sur la mort et le problème du sujet. [REVIEW]D. G. R. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 12 (2):323-323.
Time and death are the unifying themes of this work in twelve propositions. Beginning with the self as subject, M. Echeverria is led in successive propositions to the acknowledgment of the Other. With the Other is given the temporal dimension of human experience; this reveals the possibility of living for the world or for eternity. The final proposition states that "the Other, as he will reveal himself at our death, is the final cause of our acts."--R. D. G.

    Theorie du Champ de la Conscience. [REVIEW]D. G. R. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (4):692-692.
Beginning from a psychological point of view, the author moves into a strictly phenomenological study of the organization of perception and of consciousness. His thesis is that every field of consciousness has three domains, viz., a theme, a field or background, and a fringe area, each of which has its own type of organization. The work breaks some new ground in phenomenology and contains a sketch of the ontological implications of the study.--R. D. G.

Translated from the Italian, this work forms part of the author's La philosophie de l'intégralité; it deals dialectically with the essence of being and with existence and reality, throwing interesting light on values, love, and morality.

    R. D. Laing and theology: the influence of Christian existentialism on The Divided Self.Gavin Miller - 2009 - History of the Human Sciences 22 (2):1-21.
The radical psychiatrist R. D. Laing's first book, The Divided Self (1960), is informed by the work of Christian thinkers on scriptural interpretation — an intellectual genealogy apparent in Laing's comparison of Karl Jaspers's symptomatology with the theological tradition of `form criticism'. Rudolf Bultmann's theology, which was being enthusiastically promoted in 1950s Scotland, is particularly influential upon Laing. It furnishes him with the notion that schizophrenic speech expresses existential truths as if they were statements about the physical and organic world. (...)

The focus of this study was to analyze the content, distribution, and comparative genome relationships of 996 chromosome bin-mapped expressed sequence tags accounting for 2266 restriction fragments on the homoeologous group 3 chromosomes of hexaploid wheat. Of these loci, 634, 884, and 748 were mapped on chromosomes 3A, 3B, and 3D, respectively. The individual chromosome bin maps revealed bins with a high density of mapped ESTs in the distal region and bins of low density in the proximal region of the (...)

Reassessing the approach to informed consent: the case of unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in adult thalassemia patients.Salvatore Pisu, Giovanni Caocci, Ernesto D’Aloja, Fabio Efficace, Adriana Vacca, Eugenia Piras, Maria G. The informed consent process is the legal embodiment of the fundamental right of the individual to make decisions affecting his or her health., and the patient’s permission is a crucial form of respect of freedom and dignity, it becomes extremely important to enhance the patient’s understanding and recall of the information given by the physician. This statement acquires additional weight when the medical treatment proposed can potentially be detrimental or even fatal. This is the case of thalassemia patients pertaining to (...)

The genesis of a mediaeval historian: Pierre Duhem and the origins of statics.R. N. D. Martin - 1976 - Annals of Science 33 (2):119-129.
Contrary to what might be expected given a religious or other motivation, Pierre Duhem's interest in mediaeval science was the result of his surprise encounter with Jordanus de Nemore while working on Les origines de la statique in the late autumn of 1903. Historical assumptions common among physicists at that time may explain this surprise, which occasioned a frantic search for more mediaeval precursors for Renaissance mechanics. It also raised serious historiographical problems that threatened even his methodological views, until they (...)
