The engineering-based approach of synthetic biology is characterized by an assumption that ‘engineering by design’ enables the construction of ‘living machines’. These ‘machines’, as biological machines, are expected to display certain properties of life, such as adapting to changing environments and acting in a situated way. This paper proposes that a tension exists between the expectations placed on biological artefacts and the notion of producing such systems by means of engineering; this tension makes it seem implausible that biological systems, especially (...) those with properties characteristic of living beings, can in fact be produced using the specific methods of engineering. We do not claim that engineering techniques have nothing to contribute to the biotechnological construction of biological artefacts. However, drawing on Descartes’s and Kant’s thinking on the relationship between the organism and the machine, we show that it is considerably more plausible to assume that distinctively biological artefacts emerge within a paradigm different from the paradigm of the Cartesian machine that underlies the engineering approach. We close by calling for increased attention to be paid to approaches within molecular biology and chemistry that rest on conceptions different from those of synthetic biology’s engineering paradigm. The program of the Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe, formulated primarily by Otto Brunner, Werner Conze, and Reinhart Koselleck, calls for relating conceptual change to structural transformations of government, society, and economy in German-speaking Europe. J. G. A. Pocock, of Cambridge, identified the range of alternative and competing political discourses available to early modern writers, while Quentin Skinner, also of Cambridge, treated political theories in terms of those historical contexts and linguistic conventions which both facilitate and circumscribe legitimations of political arrangements, and (...) he described such theories as intentional speech acts. Despite the differences in the German and Anglophone modes of treating political language, however, there are no major obstacles in bringing them together. The GG could profit from Pocock's technique of analysis and comparison in identifying early modern political languages, and the issues raised by Skinner about political thought and theorizing as forms of linguistic action, as well as the effect of general linguistic conventions upon available modes of legitimating political arrangements. The Anglophone mode might profit from considering the GG's non-reductive use of social history in conjunction with that of concepts, and from the GG's systematic use of contemporary sources of language and linguistic definitions. Die Vorstellungswelten bilden einen eminent wichtigen Bestandteil historischer Forschung, weil bei kaum einem anderen Gegenstand die Menschen selbst so deutlich in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses treten wie bei menschlichen Vorstellungen, mit denen die Menschen sich selbst und ihre Umwelt wahrnehmen und sie zu erklären und zu begreifen suchen. Das Denken der Menschen ist Grundlage ihres Handelns und bildet daher einen entscheidenden Faktor aller historischen Vorgänge. Im Zuge einer sich immer stärker abzeichnenden kulturwissenschaftlichen und anthropologischen Betrachtungsweise heutiger Geisteswissenschaften dürfte das Thema (...) in Zukunft noch an Bedeutung gewinnen. Mit den religiösen Vorstellungswelten des Mittelalters aber erfassen wir den zentralen Aspekt dieser Epoche schlechthin. Ziel des Autors ist es, einen repräsentativen und zugleich informativen und anschaulichen Einblick in die geistig-religiöse Befindlichkeit der (schreibenden) mittelalterlichen Menschen aus geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive zu bieten, als ein erstes Ergebnis, an das die künftige Forschung anknüpfen oder mit dem sie sich auseinandersetzen kann. Unter dem Titel „Gott und die Welt“ ist dabei auf die Bedeutung religiöser Vorstellungen im Mittelalter, vor allem aber auf deren zentralen Ausgangspunkt mittelalterlicher Religiosität verwiesen: den Schöpfer und seine Schöpfung. Im ersten, nun vorliegenden Teilband des Werkes behandelt der Autor das mittelalterliche Gottesbild, einen Aspekt mittelalterlicher Vorstellungswelten, der hier erstmals in dieser Ausführlichkeit aufgearbeitet wird. Erkenntnisprobleme, Diskussionen um Gottes Wirken als Schöpfer, Lenker und Richter kommen dabei ebenso ausführlich zur Sprache wie Diskurse um das göttliche Wesen, das Trinitätsproblem, Gottesbeweise und bildliche Gottesdarstellungen. Der in Kürze folgende zweite Teilband wird über die materielle und personelle Schöpfung, also über den Kosmos (Natur und Kosmos, Himmel, Paradies, Hölle und Erde) und die Geschöpfe (Engel, Teufel, Menschen) sowie das Heilsgeschehen, handeln. Den Abschluß des Werkes wird ein Band über einzelne konkrete Aspekte religiöser Vorstellungen, wie Buße und Sünde, Heilige und Wunder, Tod und Jenseits, bilden. (shrink)

Der Beitrag untersucht Gerhard Richters Gemälde "Betty" (1988, WV 663-5) als bildliche Darstellung der elementaren Verletzlichkeit menschlichen Lebens. Als Theorie solcher Verletzlichkeit wird die politische Philosophie Judith Butlers herangezogen, methodisch orientiert sich die Untersuchung an Überlegungen der Bildhermeneutik Gottfried Boehms. So entwickelt der Beitrag den Gedanken einer präreflektiver normativer Verpflichtung, der in Richters Gemälde anschaulich wird. Zum Vergleich wird die Interpretation eines Gemäldes von Werner Scholz herangezogen (Antigone), die Hans-Georg Gadamer entwickelt hat.

Multinational companies (MNCs) frequently adopt corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities that are aimed at providing ‘public goods’ and influencing the government in policymaking. Such political CSR (PCSR) activities have been determined to increase MNCs’ socio-political legitimacy and to be useful in building relationships with the state and other key external stakeholders. Although research on MNCs’ PCSR within the context of emerging economies is gaining momentum, only a limited number of studies have examined the firm-level variables that affect the extent to (...) which MNCs’ subsidiaries in emerging economies pursue PCSR. Using insights from resource dependence theory, institutional theory, and the social capital literature, we argue that MNCs’ subsidiaries that are critically dependent on local resources, have greater ties to managers of related businesses and to policymakers, and that those that are interdependent on the MNCs’ headquarters and other foreign subsidiaries, are more likely to be involved in PCSR. We obtain support for our hypotheses using a sample of 105 subsidiaries of foreign firms that operate in India. Our findings enhance our understanding of the factors that determine MNCs’ political CSR in emerging economies. (shrink)

This article has two purposes. First, it aims to present a detailed analysis of the argument of “recognition” or even of the “fight for recognition”, which Hegel uses in his fragments from Jena treating of the system of philosophy, especially of the philosophy of spirit. It will be necessary to determine precedently by means of an exact interpretation the content of that expressions, in order to criticize and to compare, his original significance in Hegel with the theoretical application made by (...) Honneth. The special aim hereby is to correct and to explain the function of the “fight for recognition”, even in its sharpening significance as a “fight for life and death”, with relation to the genesis of the state of right. Second, the figure of “recognition” is related to Hegel’s Philosophy of right in the version of 1820. In this work, recognition participates in the theory of “institutions” which is analyzed by Honneth as well. Apart from the merits gained through the endeavour to introduce a classic philosophical theory into a conception of justice in society, we feel obliged to state an error in Honneth‘s interpretation in so far as he understands an institution as a simple social community of communication. For that reason, a conclusion based on a critical commentary can only include a negative recommendation, that means, not to follow those traces of interpretation but rather to defend and to consult the texts originally composed by Hegel.
