    Plaidoyer pour une autre constitution.Bernard Remiche & Charles-Etienne Lagasse - 1974 - Res Publica 16 (1):117-132.
The 1970 amended Belgian Constitution is at the cross-roads of two currents of history, on one hand, once more the traditional values of the Occidental society ; on the other hand a double communal pressure contests an unitary state : from underneath affirmation of three Belgiannational communities, from above, apparition of a «supra-national party».The authors make a critical examination of the cropping up of bonding institutions in a «pré-fédéral» state, then they clearly state the principles of a really federal Constitution (...)

Framework for the Analysis of Nanotechnologies’ Impacts and Ethical Acceptability: Basis of an Interdisciplinary Approach to Assessing Novel Technologies.Johane Patenaude, Georges-Auguste Legault, Jacques Beauvais, Louise Bernier, Jean-Pierre Béland, Patrick Boissy, Vanessa Chenel, Charles-Étienne Daniel, Jonathan Genest, Marie-Sol Poirier & Danielle Tapin - 2015 - Science and Engineering Ethics 21 (2):293-315.
The genetically manipulated organism crisis demonstrated that technological development based solely on the law of the marketplace and State protection against serious risks to health and safety is no longer a warrant of ethical acceptability. In the first part of our paper, we critique the implicitly individualist social-acceptance model for State regulation of technology and recommend an interdisciplinary approach for comprehensive analysis of the impacts and ethical acceptability of technologies. In the second part, we present a framework for the analysis (...)

The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has shed more light on the difficulty of making health care decisions integrating scientific knowledge and values associated to life and death issues, human suffering, quality of life, economic losses, liberty of movement, etc. But the difficulties related to health care decisions and the use of innovative drugs or technologies are not new, and many countries have created agencies that have the mandate to evaluate new technologies in health care. Health Technological Assessment (HTA) reports’ aim is (...)

Etienne Balibar in Conversation: Revisiting European Marxism.Charles Barthold - 2019 - Theory, Culture and Society 36 (7-8):231-247.
In this interview, Balibar provides a number of reflections on the articulation of different Marxist traditions, including Italian Marxism and the Neue Marx Lektüre, to his own Althusserian position. Similarly, he comments on his relationship to the readings of French theory upon Marx’s oeuvre. He further develops an analysis of the contemporary challenges posed by capitalism – and its different crises – to critical theory, social sciences and social movements. Then, he argues that financialization and the Anthropocene are central issues. (...)

Critique des nouvelles servitudes.Yves Charles Zarka & Christian Delacampagne (eds.)

    Etienne Souriau : a dialogue between ontology and aesthetics.Dominique Château - 2023 - Aisthesis: Pratiche, Linguaggi E Saperi Dell’Estetico 15 (2):5-13.
In addition to being a great aesthetician who established the teaching and research of aesthetics in France, Étienne Souriau is an important philosopher, notably for his contribution to ontology. His aesthetics and his ontology are closely entangled. The purpose of this article is to study the relationship between these two rings, in this case inseparable, but distinct, of philosophy. We will use a comparison with the phenomenology of Charles Peirce, relevant insofar as, by different ways, art for the (...)

    Charles Taylor. [REVIEW]Peter Redpath - 2003 - Review of Metaphysics 57 (2):441-442.
Anyone who enjoys reading Étienne Gilson’s stunning works on the relation between metaphysics and art, such as Painting and Reality and The Arts of the Beautiful, should love Piotr Jaroszynski’s Metaphysics and Art. In my opinion, the book is a masterpiece, deserving of the same level of lofty respect that scholars give to comparable works by Thomistic scholars such as Gilson and Jacques Maritain. Anyone seriously interested in the relationship of metaphysics and art, the way this relationship has developed (...)

Being questioned about the nature of Christian faith, Mark Twain famously declared it as 'believing what you know ain't so'. Indeed, the role of reason for faith is a matter of dispute. Jesus, some argue, was not a philosopher or a teacher of wisdom. Rather, he is the saviour because of his unassuming sacrificial death and resurrection. Not reason, but the leap of faith is the ultimate condition of salvation. The Enlightenment however epitomises a Copernican revolution in favour of reason. (...)

    Geoffroy's Giraffe: The Hagiography of a Charismatic Mammal. [REVIEW]Olivier Lagueux - 2003 - Journal of the History of Biology 36 (2):225 - 247.
In 1826, the Pasha of Egypt offered to the King Charles X an unusual present: a living giraffe. While offering remarkable animals was a common practice among monarchs, the choice of a giraffe was somewhat extraordinary since it was the first representative of its kind to set foot in France. The Royal Menagerie of the Paris Muséum national d'histoire naturelle was asked to oversee the transportation of this precious mammal and Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, one of its professors, was (...)

The Myth of Interiority (Le Psychologue Malgré Lui).Charles Travis - 2024 - Topoi 43 (1):233-242.
Non-factive representing is what makes room for truth and falsehood. In the ontologically central aspect of the verb it comes in two forms: allorepresenting (saying-that), and autorepresenting (taking-that). Each form relates thinkers to thinkables in its proprietary way. Autorepresenting invites a certain sort of misunderstanding. It may seem to call for enabling in a particular determinate way. Just here psychologism despite oneself may strike. Allorepresenting rests on capacities of a different sort. It relates itself, and thereby its author, to a (...)

COVID-19 human challenge trials and randomized controlled trials: lessons for the next pandemic.Charles Weijer - forthcoming - Research Ethics.
The COVID-19 pandemic touched off an unprecedented search for vaccines and treatments. Without question, the development of vaccines to prevent COVID-19 was an enormous scientific accomplishment. Further, the RECOVERY and Solidarity trials identified effective treatments for COVID-19. But all was not success. The urgent need for COVID-19 prevention and treatment fueled an embrace of risks—to research participants and to the reliability of the science itself—as allegedly necessary costs to speed scientific progress. Scientists and (even) ethicists supported overturning longstanding norms protecting (...)

Darwin: German mystic or French rationalist?Michael T. Ghiselin - 2015 - History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences 36 (3):305-311.
The notion that Charles Darwin embraced the German Romantic tradition seems plausible, given the early influence of Alexander von Humboldt. But this view fails to do justice to other scientific traditions. Darwin was a protégé of the Englishman John Stevens Henslow and was a follower of the Scott Charles Lyell. He had important debts to French scientists, notably Henri Milne-Edwards, Étienne and Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, and Alphonse de Candolle. Many Germans were quite supportive of Darwin, but not (...)

The Right to Expressive Voting Methods.Pierre-Étienne Vandamme - forthcoming - Res Publica:1-22.
In mass democracies, voting—in elections or referendums—is the main way in which most citizens can publicly express their political preferences. And yet this means of expression is sometimes perceived by them as highly frustrating, partly because it does not allow for much expression. Dominant voting methods lead to a reduction of options, pressure citizens to vote tactically at the cost of expressing their genuine preferences, and fail to convey what they really think about different candidates, parties, or options. Yet citizens (...)

    The Explanation of Behaviour.Charles Taylor - 2021 - Routledge.
The Explanation of Behaviour was the first book written by the renowned philosopher Charles Taylor. A vitally important work of philosophical anthropology, it is a devastating criticism of the theory of behaviourism, a powerful explanatory approach in psychology and philosophy when Taylor's book was first published. However, Taylor has far more to offer than a simple critique of behaviourism. He argues that in order to properly understand human beings, we must grasp that they are embodied, minded creatures with purposes, (...)
