Huston Smith Replies to Barbour, Goodenough, and Peterson.Huston Smith - 2001 - Zygon 36 (2):223-231.
Responses and clarifications are given to the three respondents to my recent book, Why Religion Matters, in which I discuss what I see as the drawbacks and inconsistencies of Darwinism. While certain of their criticisms are understandable, others are based on a misreading of my work. Finally, my critics fail to show that my book is mistaken in its central claim that the modern loss of faith in transcendence, basic to the traditional/religious worldview, is unwarranted, because science has not been (...)

Dynamics of Institutional Logics in a Cross-Sector Social Partnership: The Case of Refugee Integration in Germany.Andreas Hesse, Karin Kreutzer & Marjo-Riitta Diehl - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 159 (3):679-704.
This study examines how institutional logics interplay in a cross-sector social partnership that manages refugee integration in a rural district in Germany. In an inductive 15-month case study that drew on interviews and observations, we observe the dynamic materialization of institutional logics in day-to-day practices and an increasing contradiction and even rivalry between community- and market-based institutional logics over time. As a result, we delineate a model explaining the interplay of institutional logics along two dimensions: the dominance of one salient (...)

Three Paths to Feeling Just: How Managers Grapple with Justice Conundrums During Organizational Change.Julia Zwank, Marjo-Riitta Diehl & Marion Fortin - 2023 - Journal of Business Ethics 186 (1):217-236.
Managers tasked with organizational change often face irreconcilable demands on how to enact justice—situations we call _justice conundrums_. Drawing on interviews held with managers before and after a planned large-scale change, we identify specific conundrums and illustrate how managers grapple with these through three prototypical paths. Among our participants, the paths increasingly diverged over time, culminating in distinct career decisions. Based on our findings, we develop an integrative process model that illustrates how managers grapple with justice conundrums. Our contributions are (...)

    Transcendence in Traditional China.Huston Smith - 1967 - Religious Studies 2 (2):185 - 196.
China's regard for nature, as expressed in Sung landscape painting, is clear and well recognised. What the Chinese believed to exceed the natural world, the realm of ‘the ten-thousand things’, is less clear. The present essay tries to explore this question systematically.

    The Religious Significance of Postmodernism.Huston Smith - 1995 - Faith and Philosophy 12 (3):409-422.
Accepting Lyotard’s “incredulity toward metanarratives” as its definition of postmodernism, and Derrida’s “openness to the other” as deconstruction’s contribution to it this essay distinguishes three species of postmodernism: minimal (we have no believable metanarratives), mainline (they are unavailable in principle), and polemical (“good riddance!”). It then argues that the religious impulse challenges all three of these contentions. Contra polemical postmodernism, metanarratives/worldviews are needed. Contra mainline postmodernism, reliable ones are possible. And contra minimal postmodernism, they already exist - in the world’s (...)

The Influence of Corporate Elites on Women on Supervisory Boards: Female Directors’ Inclusion in Germany.Jie Huang, Marjo-Riitta Diehl & Sandra Paterlini - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 165 (2):347-364.
Although we can observe noticeable progress in gender diversity on corporate boards, these boards remain far from gender balanced. Our paper builds on social identity theory to examine the impact of corporate elites—men and women who sit on multiple corporate boards—on board diversity. We extend the main argument of social identity theory concerning favouritism based on homophily by suggesting that boards with men with multiple appointments are unwilling to include female board members to protect the monopoly value generated by their (...)

Vaccine research, as well as the development, testing, clinical trials, and commercial uses of vaccines involve complex processes with various biological data that include gene and protein expression, analysis of molecular and cellular interactions, study of tissue and whole body responses, and extensive epidemiological modeling. Although many data resources are available to meet different aspects of vaccine needs, it remains a challenge how we are to standardize vaccine annotation, integrate data about varied vaccine types and resources, and support advanced vaccine (...)

    A Thoughtful Soul: Reflections From Swedenborg.Huston Smith - 1995 - Chrysalis Books.
George F. Dole, Harvard Ph.D., has translated and arranged by theme a selection of passages from Swedenborg's works on life, heaven and hell, and the nature of God. This book is an accessible introduction for the reader new to Swedenborg, as well as a concise reference for those familiar with his philosophy. [Swedenborg's] philosophy is about as practical as one could ask. Ascetism is not the way to God.... A good person can be saved with any religion or with no (...)

Is Dating Behavior in Digital Contexts Driven by Evolutionary Programs? A Selective Review.Jorge Ponseti, Katharina Diehl & Aglaja Valentina Stirn - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
In recent years, millions of citizens all over the world have used digital dating services. It remains unknown to what extent human sexuality will be changed by this. Based on an evolutionary psychological perspective, we assume that sexual selection shaped behavioural tendencies in men and women that are designed to increase the reproductive fitness. These tendencies are referred to as sexual strategies. Males and females sexual strategies differ according to sex-dimorphic reproductive investments. We assume that this inheritance will affect human (...)
