In this paper, we explore a rationalistic orientation in Western society. We suggest that this orientation is one of the predominant ways in which Western society tends to frame, understand and deal with a majority of problems and questions – namely in terms of mathematical analysis, calculation and quantification, relying on logic, numbers, and statistics. Our main goal in this paper is to uncover the affective structure of this rationalistic orientation. In doing so, we illustrate how this orientation structures the (...) way not only individuals but society as a whole frames and solves problems. We firstly point towards some exemplary instances of the rationalistic orientation, specifically regarding science, society, and lifeworld practice. Crucially, we argue that the rationalistic orientation is not merely based on a set of beliefs we could easily correct; but rather, that it is an affective condition tacitly shaping our engagement with the world in an encompassing way. Relating to the work of Martin Heidegger, we argue that what we have called an orientation in the beginning is in fact a rationalistic attunement. This attunement fundamentally shapes the pre-reflective level of how individuals approach the world. We elaborate this claim by showing how the rationalistic attunement concretely manifests in tangible socio-material affect dynamics. In the end, we motivate a critical stance towards this attunement, providing the ability to reflect upon and question instances where this way of framing and solving problems is counterproductive. Rousseaus Verhältnis zu den Institutionen ist zumindest ambivalent, eher paradox: Einerseits gilt er als ein dezidierter Kritiker nicht nur der Institutionen seiner eigenen Zeit, sondern von Institutionalität überhaupt. Andererseits lässt sich kaum leugnen, dass Institutionen eine wichtige Rolle in seinem Denken spielen. Man mag darin eine gewisse Zwangsläufigkeit erkennen: Sofern Rousseau nicht nur kritisieren, sondern aktiv gestalten will, sofern er nicht nur punktuell intervenieren, sondern seinen reformerischen Vorschlägen Beständigkeit verleihen möchte, bleibt er auf Institutionen und Institutionalität angewiesen. Rousseau ist in (...) diesem Sinne kein Utopist: Auch wenn seine Schriften z.T. utopische Züge aufweisen, wenn sich in ihnen die Tendenz zum Ausbruch aus dem von der Gesellschaft gesteckten Rahmen manifestiert, kehren sie doch letztlich immer wieder zu den Institutionen zurück. Dass dies keine Kapitulation vor der Macht des Faktischen bedeutet, sondern ganz im Gegenteil den Realismus eines aufgeklärten Denkens ausmacht, das sich - obgleich eminent kritisch- stets aufs Neue vor institutionelle Herausforderungen stellt, belegen die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge. ZusammenfassungIn diesem Aufsatz wird diskutiert, wie die Erkenntnisse aus Religionspsychologie und Cognitive Science of Religion für die Religionswissenschaft zugänglich werden können. Das geschieht im Rahmen eines transdiziplinären Konzeptes von Religionswissenschaft. Beide individualistischen Zugänge zu Religion\en werden kurz in Bezug auf religionstheoretische Unterschiede und die Gemeinsamkeit im Bereich des kognitionspsychologischen Paradigmas eingeführt. Für die Auseinandersetzung mit der Cognitive Science of Religion wird dargestellt, wie trotz des ontologischen Reduktionismus und in Auseinandersetzung mit dem epistemologischen Reduktionismus ein Bezug zu anderen disziplinären Zugängen der (...) Religionswissenschaft möglich ist. Dabei wird ihr Naturalismus einer Lesart des methodischen Konstruktivismus unterworfen. Es wird gezeigt, wie empirisch überprüfbare Theorien der Cognitive Science of Religion und der Religionspsychologie auf Grundlage der nomothetisch-deduktiven Wissenschaftstheorie weiterentwickelt werden, die Hubert Seiwert und Bretislav Horyna bereits in die Religionswissenschaft eingeführt haben. Insgesamt ist dies ein Vorschlag, sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Cognitive Science of Religion nicht so sehr an den Prämissen und Unterschieden aufzuhalten, sondern die psychologische Perspektive als Ergänzung in der Beschreibung und Erklärung von Religion\en zu behandeln. This volume contains the papers read at the conference on 'Semantics from different points of view' that took place at Konstanz University in Septem ber 1978. This interdisciplinary conference Vias organized by the':Sonderfor schungsbereich 99 - Linguistik' and sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsge meinschaft. Li~guists, philosophers, logicians, and psychologists met to dis cuss recent developments in the study of the semantics of natural language from the point of view of their disciplines. But this is not to say that there was (...) one particular topic shared by all the participants. The conference was organized because the seven research groups that constitute the Sonderforschungsbereich wanted to discuss their results in an international context and to get advice and guidance for the work still to be done. Therefore, quite a number of topics were covered, though at different levels of precision, under the general label 'semantics'. And the selection of topics, as well as the relative importance given to them, is due to the research interests currently represented in the Sonderforschungs bereich. (shrink)

The situation in the job market and specific expectations of job applicants lie at the heart of a peculiar “career” that has recently been experienced in refusal letters. Additional elements influencing their form and content are German law regulations. Aperitif-Briefe, Eisschreiben, and refusal letters proper are the three main variants of this text genre which has undergone noticeable evolution in the investigated period of 2001–2012. The aim of this article is to indicate the development stages of this text genre, paying (...) special attention to the aids offered to refusal letter authors by developing technology, especially by media. Anthropotechnik wird daher zu einem umstrittenen Begriff, weil die Zielsetzung und Machbarkeit der Technik von der jeweiligen Deutung des Menschenbegriffs abhängt, aber auch von der Technik auf jenen zurück wirkt. Der Autor Kevin Liggieri zeichnet in seiner begriffsgeschichtlichen Untersuchung zum Begriff der Anthropotechnik nach, wie Mensch und Technik im Laufe dieser Entwicklung immer (...) wieder neu aufeinander verwiesen sind. Cet article tente de démontrer la cohérence des contes de Diderot envisagés sous le point de vue d’un programme étho-poétique englobant, au centre duquel se trouve la notion de caractère. Le caractère chez Diderot semble donner un fondement quasi physique, en tout cas naturaliste à la morale, mais il est lui-même miné par des tensions (entre forme et force, être et paraître, fiction et morale etc.) que met en relief l’article. Après une première réflexion sur la critique du jugement moral (...) effectuée par les contes, qui permet de relever les ‘vertus’ du caractere du point de vue de la pensée morale, s’approfondit l’analyse des enjeux littéraires des contes. Il s’avère que plutôt qu’un fondement stable de la morale, le caractère (littéraire), grâce à ses ambivalences mêmes, constitue le médium privilégié de la stratégie esthétique de Diderot en tant qu’elle vise essentiellement à une compromission éthique du lecteur. Der Band thematisiert Karl Bühlers Idee des Empraktischen, fasst sie aber zugleich weiter, indem nicht nur auf sprachlich-implizites, sondern leiblich-implizites Vollzugshandeln eingegangen wird. Im Empraktischen geht es demzufolge um leiblich-implizite Wissensformen. Das Empraktische ist ein Wissen-Haben im Tun-Können. Empraktisch wissen wir, was wir wissen, solange wir nicht danach gefragt werden. Oder anders ausgedrückt: Empraktisches Wissen ist ein Wissen, das wir solange haben, solange wir es nicht metastufig problematisieren. Selbst die Reflexionswissenschaft Philosophie, deren Tun wesentlich in der Reflexion besteht, funktioniert wie (...) Sport, Sex, Wissenschaft und Kunst auf der Basis des Empraktischen. Der Band thematisiert demzufolge das Empraktische auf zwei Ebenen: auf der Ebene der Philosophie und auf der Ebene der Kunst. (shrink)

In this paper, I develop the concept ofaffective milieusby building on the recently established notion ofaffective arrangements. Affective arrangements bring together the more analytical research of situated affectivity with affect studies informed by cultural theory. As such, this concept takes a step past the usual synchronic understanding of situatedness toward an understanding of the social, dynamic, historical, and cultural situatedness of individuals in relation to situated affectivity. However, I argue that affective arrangements remain too narrow in their scope of analysis (...) since their focus mainly lies on local, marked-off, and unique constellations of affect relations. They neglect the more mundane and day-to-day affect dynamics of social life. Hence, I introduce the notion of affective milieus, which brings to light the everyday, ubiquitous affective engagements of individuals with their socio-material surroundings. Affective milieus specifically call attention to how commonplace affect relations create territories in the social universe which form and mold individuals all the time. In that way, this paper apprehends and advances recent developments in the research on situated affectivity. (shrink)

Achievements have recently begun to attract increased attention from value theorists. One recurring idea in this budding literature is that one important factor determining the magnitude or value of an achievement is the amount of effort the achiever invested. The aim of this paper is to present the most plausible version of this idea. This advances the current state of debate where authors are invoking substantially different notions of effort and are thus talking past each other. While the concept of (...) effort has been invoked in the philosophical analysis of a number of important concepts such as desert, attention, competence, and distributive justice, it has hardly ever been analyzed itself. This paper makes headway in this regard by discussing three ambiguities in the everyday notion of effort. It continues to develop two accounts of effort and shows how both of them are achievement-enhancing. (shrink)
