    The Mediating Self. [REVIEW]Tyler Thompson - 1989 - Idealistic Studies 19 (3):274-275.
The title of this work suggests its substance very well. The author expounds and criticizes the views of George Herbert Mead, as found in Mind, Self, and Society and The Philosophy of the Present, and Jean-Paul Sartre, as set forth in Transcendence of the Ego and Being and Nothingness. He finds that Mead’s account of the self as a social object in which reflective consciousness arises and Sartre’s emphasis upon existential spontaneity provide an instructive study in contrasts but are (...)

The great refusal: Herbert Marcuse and contemporary social movements.Andrew T. Lamas (ed.) - 2017 - Philadelphia: Temple University Press.
Herbert Marcuse examined the subjective and material conditions of radical social change and developed the "Great Refusal," a radical concept of "the protest against that which is." The editors and contributors to the exciting new volume The Great Refusal provide an analysis of contemporary social movements around the world with particular reference to Marcuse's revolutionary concept. The book also engages-and puts Marcuse in critical dialogue with-major theorists including Slavoj Žižek and Michel Foucault, among others. The chapters in this book (...)

Is That a Genuine Smile? Emoji-Based Sarcasm Interpretation Across the Lifespan.Jing Cui, Herbert L. Colston & Guiying Jiang - 2024 - Metaphor and Symbol 39 (3):195-216.
Emoji appear to be an important cue to judge whether a statement is sarcastic in computer-mediated communication. In this study, we investigated whether the smiling emoji, an indicator of sarcastic intention in the Chinese culture, exerts an influence on sarcasm interpretation across the lifespan. Statements accompanied with or without a smiling emoji were compared in unambiguous (Experiment 1) and ambiguous (Experiment 2) contexts. The results of Experiment 1 illustrated that for teenagers and the 20-year-olds the smiling emoji enhanced the perceived (...)

    Refusing Polemics.Jeffery L. Nicholas - 2017 - Radical Philosophy Review 20 (1):185-213.
Today’s Left has inherited and internalized the rift that split the New Left. This split led to Alasdair MacIntyre’s Herbert Marcuse: An Exposition and a Polemic, a book that angered many because of MacIntyre’s harsh treatment of Marcuse. I situate MacIntyre’s engagement with Marcuse against the background of the split in the New Left: on the one side, E. P. Thompson, MacIntyre, and those who then saw the revolutionary class in the proletariat, and on the other side, Perry (...)

    Practices of Calculation.Herbert Kalthoff - 2005 - Theory, Culture and Society 22 (2):69-97.
As recent studies in economic and financial sociology have underscored, calculation is central to economic practices. While some sociological accounts locate the performance of calculation within individual ability, networks of human agents or their cultural embeddedness, studies operating on the background of the sociology of (scientific) knowledge conceive of calculation as situated in the practice of the participants engaged, the technological tools used and their requirements. The article explores this point further, using a distinction which can be traced back to (...)

Education and the human quest.Herbert Arnold Thelen - 1960 - New York,: Harper.
"Human relations? Discovery learning? Community involvement? What would education be like if it were based on what we know about man, and the operation of society? In a major step toward bridging the gap between what we profess philosophically and what we do technically to advance the child's quest for knowledge, Herbert Thelen presents four learning experiences that he believes a child must have to become educated--personal inquiry, group investigation, reflective action, and skill development. He explores the ways in (...)

Alfarabi, Avicenna, and Averroes on Intellect: Their Cosmologies, Theories of the Active Intellect, and Theories of Human Intellect.Herbert Alan Davidson - 1992 - New York: Oxford University Press USA.
A study of problems, all revolving around the subject of intellect in the philosophies of Alfarabi, Avicenna, and Averroes, this book starts by reviewing discussions in Greek and early Arabic philosophy which served as the background for the three Arabic thinkers. Davidson examines the cosmologies and theories of human and active intellect in the three philosophers and covers such subjects as: the emanation of the supernal realm from the First Cause; the emanation of the lower world from the transcendent active (...)

A Hundred Years Of Spectroscopy: The fifty-third Robert Boyle Lecture, 1951: Oxford University Scientific Club.Herbert Dingle - 1963 - British Journal for the History of Science 1 (3):199-216.
A hundred years ago the science of spectroscopy, though not yet christened, may be said to have attained its majority and to be just entering on its period of full adult development. It was born, of course, with Newton's explanation of the formation of the spectrum, and for many years thereafter little of importance was added to what he had discovered. It was not, in fact, until the nineteenth century that anything of outstanding importance occurred, and then, in 1802, Wollaston (...)
