From Human-Spirit Resonance to Correlative Modes: The Shaping of Chinese Correlative Thinking Jinhua Jia.Jinhua Jia - 2016 - Philosophy East and West 66 (2):449-474.
Scholars have generally agreed that correlative thinking represents a defining feature of traditional Chinese thought, and their discussions on this enduring mode of thinking have led to a better understanding of the Chinese intellectual and cultural tradition. Although scholars have seldom looked into the causes of the formation of early Chinese correlative thought, some of their discussions have provided inspiration for further investigation.A number of scholars have indicated that the concept of resonance was a fundamental factor in Chinese correlative thinking. Semiospheric Translation Types Reconsidered From the Translation Semiotics Perspective.Hongwei Jia - 2019 - Semiotica 2019 (231):121-145.
Due to the logical problems of unclear boundaries, staggered parallels, disordered standard, etc., existing in Jakobson’s intralingual, interlingual, and intersemiotic translations, the first triadic division of translation in terms of semiotics has been criticized since the 1980s. However, most of the previous semiotic research in China and the world at large still stays on the interlingual translation of literary texts, neglecting semiotic transformations as a sign activity and semiosis between tangible signs and intangible ones in the same and/or different period (...)

A Meta-Analytic Review of Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Financial Performance: The Moderating Effect of Contextual Factors.Shenghua Jia, Junsheng Dou & Qian Wang - 2016 - Business and Society 55 (8):1083-1121.
The relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate financial performance has long been a central and contentious debate in the literature. However, prior empirical studies provide indefinite conclusions. The purpose of this study is to review systematically and quantify the CSR–CFP link in a meta-analytic framework. Based on 119 effect sizes from 42 studies, this study estimates that the overall effect size of the CSR–CFP relationship is positive and significant, thus endorsing the argument that CSR does enhance financial performance. Furthermore, (...)

Fraud, Enforcement Action, and the Role of Corporate Governance: Evidence From China.Chunxin Jia, Shujun Ding, Yuanshun Li & Zhenyu Wu - 2009 - Journal of Business Ethics 90 (4):561-576.
We examine enforcement action in China’s emerging markets by focusing on the agents that impose this action and the role played by supervisory boards. Using newly available databases, we find that supervisory boards play an active role when Chinese listed companies face enforcement action. Listed firms with larger supervisory boards are more likely to have more severe sanctions imposed upon them by the China Security Regulatory Commission, and listed companies that face more severe enforcement actions have more supervisory board meetings. (...)

This study uses the institutional perspective to examine the interaction effects between the subnational institutional context and firm-level parameters on corporate environmental behaviors, based on a unique cross-sectional data set of private firms compiled from three different sources in China. Our results suggest that both enforcement stringency of environmental regulations at the provincial-level and private firms’ foreign ownership negatively affect compensation fees, which are levies charged for firms’ emissions. Enforcement stringency also moderates the firm-level relationship between foreign ownership and compensation (...)

Ethical Leadership and Knowledge Hiding: A Moderated Mediation Model of Psychological Safety and Mastery Climate.Chenghao Men, Patrick S. W. Fong, Weiwei Huo, Jing Zhong, Ruiqian Jia & Jinlian Luo - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics.
According to social learning theory, we explored the relation between ethical leadership and knowledge hiding. We developed a moderated mediation model of the psychological safety linking ethical leadership and knowledge hiding. Surveying 436 employees in 78 teams, we found that ethical leadership was negatively related to knowledge hiding, and that this relation was mediated by psychological safety. We further found that the effect of ethical leadership on knowledge hiding was contingent on a mastery climate. Finally, theoretical and practical implications were (...)

Moral Identity in Cultural Context: Differences Between Canadian and Chinese University Students.Fanli Jia, Tobias Krettenauer & Lihong Li - 2019 - Journal of Moral Education 48 (2):247-262.
ABSTRACTAlbeit the moral identity construct has gained a pivotal status in moral psychology, previous research largely neglected cultural differences. The present study investigated moral identity from a cross-cultural perspective by comparing Western and Eastern cultures in three different contexts: family, school and community/society. The sample included 185 young adults from Canada and 148 from China. A modified version of the moral identity interview was administrated in each culture. All participants were asked to select 12–15 attributes describing a high moral person (...)

We examine the dynamics between enforcement actions and the responses from both the board of directors and supervisory boards amid China's governance reform. Rather than examining determinants of fraudulent activities, we investigate, after enforcement actions are imposed, whether the board of directors and supervisory boards react differently, and whether their different reactions play a role in preventing future occurrences of frauds. We find that both boards react to enforcement actions, but only the responses from the board of directors help us (...)

Critical Mass of Women on BODs, Multiple Identities, and Corporate Philanthropic Disaster Response: Evidence From Privately Owned Chinese Firms.Ming Jia & Zhe Zhang - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 118 (2):303-317.
Although previous studies focus on the role of women in the boardroom and corporate response to natural disasters, none evaluate how women directors influence corporate philanthropic disaster response (CPDR). This study collects data on the philanthropic responses of privately owned Chinese firms to the Wenchuan earthquake of May 12, 2008, and the Yushu earthquake of April 14, 2010. We find that when at least three women serve on a board of directors (BOD), their companies’ responses to natural disasters are more (...)

The Role of Corporate Donations in Chinese Political Markets.Ming Jia & Zhe Zhang - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 153 (2):519-545.
Many corporations actively engage in political activities to enhance their relationships with politicians, facilitating access to scarce resources and creating competitive advantages. We investigate corporate donations to explore how they initiate interactions between firms and new local leaders in China. Specifically, we propose that political turnover creates unique opportunities for firms to win over new officials via corporate donations, especially in competitive markets. Moreover, we find that firms that make generous donations at the beginning of a new city secretary’s tenure (...)

How Does the Stock Market Value Corporate Social Performance? When Behavioral Theories Interact with Stakeholder Theory.Ming Jia & Zhe Zhang - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics 125 (3):1-33.
This study examines how the reference-point effect and sunk-cost fallacy interact with stakeholder theory and influence how investors evaluate corporate social performance. We propose that ex-ante (pre-IPO) corporate social performance influences ex-post (post-IPO) perceived riskiness and that this relationship is U-shaped. We also evaluate how CEO duality and company age moderate this U-shaped relationship. Using young and newly public entrepreneurial firms in China, and focusing on stock returns in the secondary market, empirical results and robustness tests provide strong support for (...)

This paper investigates the emerging effect of mutual fund involvement on the agency problem between majority and minority shareholders during the pre-IFRS period in China indicated by earnings informativeness from an ethical perspective. We find that the presence of mutual fund hampers earnings informativeness implying that mutual funds in general, at their early stage in China, are not yet capable of serving as an effective monitor. This finding is in sharp contrast to the role of institutional investors in mature markets (...)

Word Power: The Impact of Negative Media Coverage on Disciplining Corporate Pollution.Ming Jia, Li Tong, P. V. Viswanath & Zhe Zhang - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 138 (3):437-458.
Sequences of individual words make up media reports. And sequences of media reports constitute the power of the news media to influence corporate practices. In this paper, we focus on the micro-foundations of news reports to elaborate how an atmosphere of negative news reports following an initial exposure of corporate pollution activity can help stop such activity through their impact on corporate managers. We extend our understanding of the corporate governance effect of news media by considering two new aspects of (...)

Does Servant Leadership Affect Employees’ Emotional Labor? A Social Information-Processing Perspective.Junting Lu, Zhe Zhang & Ming Jia - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 159 (2):507-518.
Emotion management in the workplace is drawing increasing attention from researchers. However, they still know little about how positive leadership affects employees’ emotional labor. Building on social information-processing theory, we examine whether and how a servant leadership style influences employees’ emotional labor. Using a sample of 305 employees in 81 work units of 25 subcorporations at a food company in China, we find that servant leadership relates negatively to surface acting but relates positively to deep acting at work. We also (...)

Linkboost: A Link Prediction Algorithm to Solve the Problem of Network Vulnerability in Cases Involving Incomplete Information.Chengfeng Jia, Jie Ma, Qi Liu, Yu Zhang & Hua Han - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-14.
The vulnerability of network information systems has attracted considerable research attention in various domains including financial networks, transportation networks, and infrastructure systems. To comprehensively investigate the network vulnerability, well-designed attack strategies are necessary. However, it is difficult to formulate a global attack strategy as the complete information of the network is usually unavailable. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a novel prediction algorithm named Linkboost, which, by predicting the hidden edges of the network, can complement the seemingly missing but (...)

Lump wave and line rogue wave of the -dimensional Mel’nikov system are derived by taking the ansatz as the rational function. By combining a rational function and different exponential functions, mixed solutions between the lump and soliton are derived. These solutions describe the interaction phenomena of the lump-bright soliton with fission and fusion, the half-line rogue wave with a bright soliton, and a rogue wave excited from the bright soliton pair, respectively. Some special concrete interaction solutions are depicted in both (...)

Their Pain, Our Pleasure: How and When Peer Abusive Supervision Leads to Third Parties’ Schadenfreude and Work Engagement.Yueqiao Qiao, Zhe Zhang & Ming Jia - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-17.
Abusive supervision negatively affects its direct victims. However, recent studies have begun to explore how abusive supervision affects third parties. We use the emotion-based process model of schadenfreude as a basis to suggest that third parties will experience schadenfreude and increase their work engagement as a response to peer abusive supervision. Furthermore, we suggest that the context of competitive goal interdependence facilitates the indirect relationship between PAS and third parties’ work engagement on schadenfreude. We use a mixed-method approach to test (...)

Li Zehou 李澤厚, one of the outstanding contemporary thinkers, coins the term “emotio-rational structure” for his ethical theory. Li emphasizes a balanced and integrated structure of emotion and reason, and the core of this structure is an innovative combination of Kantian rationalism and Confucian ethics. Li admires Immanuel Kant’s rational ontology of ethics, but criticizes his exclusion of human emotion and desire. Li advocates complementing Kantian rationalism with the Confucian ethics of emotion, which he calls “emotion as substance”. He believes (...)

Sequence Stratigraphy of Lacustrine Rift Basin in Paleogene System of Bohai Sea Area: Architecture Mode, Deposition Filling Pattern and Their Response to Tectonic Rifting Processes.Changgui Xu, Huan Lu, Zhangqiang Song & Donghui Jia - forthcoming - Interpretation:1-60.
The Bohai Sea area is a complex lacustrine rift basin characterized by multi-stage rifts, poly-cycle superimpositions, and multiple genetic mechanisms. Three types of sequence boundaries have been recognized from the Paleogene strata of offshore Bohai, including two first-, three second- and ten third-order sequence boundaries. The third-order wedges, composed of the low-stand system tract, lake expansion system tract and high-stand system tract, are significant for hydrocarbon exploration. The sequence stratigraphic patterns vary in different periods. The LST and EST developed mainly (...)

The network models under two conditions including single weight and double weights are established, respectively, to study the problem of synchronization and identification. A finite-time projection lag synchronization method is proposed and the unknown parameters of the network are identified. First of all, based on Itô’s formula and the stability theory of finite-time, a credible finite-time adaptive controller is presented to guarantee the synchronization of two nonidentical (...)

The antibody candidate set generated by the clonal selection algorithm has only a small number of antibodies with high antigen affinity to obtain high-frequency mutations. Among other antibodies, some low-affinity antibodies are replaced by new antibodies to participate in the next clonal selection. A large number of antibodies with high affinity make it difficult to participate in clonal selection and exist in antibody concentration for a long time. This part of inactive antibody forms a “black hole” of the antibody set, (...)

Considerable interest exists regarding the media’s influence on corporate reactions, but the link between media visibility and corporate philanthropic response is not clear. Natural disasters thus provide an environment that makes visible the general processes relevant to that link. Based on agenda-setting theory, stakeholder theory, and impression-management theory, we propose that corporations that are highly visible in the news media are more likely to engage in CPR and donate more money. We also propose that companies with reputations for irresponsibility or (...)

Firstly, several sets of Gaussian signals are utilized to realize the decoupling between the dynamic linear blocks and the static nonlinear blocks of a MISO Wiener system. Then, the correlation analysis is adopted to identify the parameters of the linear parts, and the problem that the output of static nonlinear block is immeasurable can be solved. As a result, it can circumvent the problem (...)

The conduction of the diodes is discussed and the characteristics of the pinched hysteresis loop are analyzed by both numerical simulations and circuit simulations. The hysteresis loops of each phase not only are pinched at the origin but also have the other two intersection points in the first quadrant and the third quadrant when three-phase bridge rectifier circuit is running under normal operation. Other conditions are also discussed (...)
