The Epistemological Benefits of Socrates’ Religious Experience.Audrey Anton - 2016 - History of Philosophy & Logical Analysis 19 (1):70-87.
There seems to be tension between portrayals of Socrates as both a committed philosopher and a pious man. For instance, one might doubt Socrates’ commitment to philosophy since he seems to irrationally defer to a daimonion. On the other hand, the fact that he challenges messages from Oracles and the gods’ role concerning the origin of the pious draws into question Socrates’ piety. In this paper, I argue that Socratic piety and rationality are not only compatible, but they are also (...)

    Peirce’s Logic.Audrey L. MacDonald - 1964 - The Monist 48 (3):332-345.
In this essay, the general ideas of Peirce’s theories of logic are brought together in an attempt to show how the various aspects of logic were arranged to develop an objective representation of the universal forms of reasoning.

    Adjusted Ratification: Post-Commitment Actions to UN Human Rights Treaties.Audrey L. Comstock - 2019 - Human Rights Review 20 (1):23-45.
A rich literature examines human rights treaty commitment and compliance. A subset of this literature has begun to examine the international legal actions states make following treaty ratification. I argue that the ways that states legally engage with treaties following commitment to UN human rights treaties is much more nuanced and differentiated than scholars have thus far presented via Reservation, Understanding, and Declaration. I introduce a first descriptive analysis of what I term Post-Commitment Actions to UN human rights treaties and (...)

Neuronal phenomena associated with vigilance and consciousness: From cellular mechanisms to electroencephalographic patterns.Anton M. L. Coenen - 1998 - Consciousness and Cognition 7 (1):42-53.
The neuroanatomical substrates controlling and regulating sleeping and waking, and thus consciousness, are located in the brain stem. Most crucial for bringing the brain into a state conducive for consciousness and information processing is the mesencephalic part of the brain stem. This part controls the state of waking, which is generally associated with a high degree of consciousness. Wakefulness is accompanied by a low-amplitude, high-frequency electroencephalogram, due to the fact that thalamocortical neurons fire in a state of tonic depolarization. Information (...)

Consciousness without a cortex, but what kind of consciousness is this?Anton M. L. Coenen - 2007 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 30 (1):87-88.
Merker suggests that the thalamocortical system is not an essential system for consciousness, but, instead, that the midbrain reticular system is responsible for consciousness. Indeed, the latter is a crucial system for consciousness, when consciousness is regarded as the waking state. However, when consciousness is regarded as phenomenal consciousness, for which experience and perception are essential elements, the thalamocortical system seems to be indispensable. Does a lack of emotions make chatbots unfit to be psychotherapists?Mehrdad Rahsepar Meadi, Justin S. Bernstein, Neeltje Batelaan, Anton J. L. M. van Balkom & Suzanne Metselaar - forthcoming - Bioethics.
Mental health chatbots (MHCBs) designed to support individuals in coping with mental health issues are rapidly advancing. Currently, these MHCBs are predominantly used in commercial rather than clinical contexts, but this might change soon. The question is whether this use is ethically desirable. This paper addresses a critical yet understudied concern: assuming that MHCBs cannot have genuine emotions, how this assumption may affect psychotherapy, and consequently the quality of treatment outcomes. We argue that if MHCBs lack emotions, they cannot have (...)

In the present essay my aim is first to review and extend Frank’s thinking on ‘the sociology of development,’ and second, I will attempt to apply his insights to some of the new or present-day directions in sociological theory and research with a view to showing how they might be seen as contributing to ‘the underdevelopment of sociology.’ Beginning with the vision of the founding fathers of sociology broadly understood, I will argue that that vision and the promise of sociology (...)

Essays in Ancient Greek Philosophy I.John P. Anton & George L. Kustas (eds.) - 1971 - Albany: State University of New York Press.
The essays in this volume treat a wide variety of fundamental topics and problems in ancient Greek philosophy. The scope of the section on pre-Socratic thought ranges over the views which these thinkers have on such areas of concern as religion, natural philosophy and science, cosmic periods, the nature of elements, theory of names, the concept of plurality, and the philosophy of mind. The essays dealing with the Platonic dialogues examine with unusual care a great number of central themes and (...)

The Foundational Debate: Complexity and Constructivity in Mathematics and Physics.Roland Omnès, Anton Zeilinger, G. Cattaneo, M. L. Dalla Chiara & R. Giuntini - 2010 - Springer.
Constructibility and complexity play central roles in recent research in computer science, mathematics and physics. For example, scientists are investigating the complexity of computer programs, constructive proofs in mathematics and the randomness of physical processes. But there are different approaches to the explication of these concepts. This volume presents important research on the state of this discussion, especially as it refers to quantum mechanics. This `foundational debate' in computer science, mathematics and physics was already fully developed in 1930 in the (...)

Several such coalitionshave been formed in North America, Europe, andAustralia with the goal of improving community foodsecurity and promoting sustainable local food systems.Pioneer coalitions have served as models, yet therehas been little systematic evaluation of thesemodels.

Background The prioritization protocols for accessing adult critical care in the extreme pandemic context contain tiebreaker criteria to facilitate decision-making in the allocation of resources between patients with a similar survival prognosis. Besides being controversial, little is known about the public acceptability of these tiebreakers. In order to better understand the public opinion, Quebec and Ontario’s protocols were presented to the public in a democratic deliberation during the summer of 2022.
