Rethinking The Courage to Be for American Culture Today.Mary Ann Stenger - 2018 - International Yearbook for Tillich Research 13 (1):197-216.
This essay compares the cultural context for The Courage to Be with the present American context and then assesses the extent to which Tillich’s analysis is helpful in understanding and/or addressing current challenges to faith and life. Two aspects of culture that need to be addressed today are 1) the importance of our human bodies in how we live and in how we relate to others and 2) issues of justice and power. People still experience the anxieties of fate and (...)

The impact of governmental assistance on insurance demand under ambiguity: a theoretical model and an experimental test. [REVIEW]Marielle Brunette, Laure Cabantous, Stéphane Couture & Anne Stenger - 2013 - Theory and Decision 75 (2):153-174.
This article deals with the impact of governmental assistance on insurance demand under ambiguity, i.e., in situations where probabilities are uncertain. First, using a model of insurance demand under ambiguity, we derive theoretical predictions about the impact of several governmental assistance programmes on optimal insurance demand. For example, governmental assistance through a fixed public support scheme implies that partial insurance is always optimal under fair insurance with ambiguity. Second, we present the results of an experiment designed to test these predictions. (...)

The Question of Addiction and TranscendenceIt has become a truism to say that virtual reality (VR) is addictive. Case, the protagonist of William Gibson’s Neuromancer, dreams of connection to the net like a junkie jonesing for a fix. Trafics de Proust: Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, Deleuze, Barthes.Anne Simon - 2016 - Paris: Hermann.

Transformations in Personhood and Culture After Theory: The Languages of History, Aesthetics, and Ethics.Christie McDonald & Gary Wihl (eds.) - 2005 - Pennsylvania State University Press.
The essays in this collection focus on the essentially moral desire within humanistic inquiry to seek a point of contact between personal experience and intellectual reflection. The book is concerned with the development of a plural vocabulary of transformation that stems from the language of historians, philosophers, feminists, and aestheticians. It delineates a significant and widespread change in intellectual perspective that resists homogenizing the objects of study to abstract conceptual models and structures. What emerges from this volume are personal, responsible, (...)

Employees as Conduits for Effective Stakeholder Engagement: An Example from B Corporations.Anne-Laure P. Winkler, Jill A. Brown & David L. Finegold - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 160 (4):913-936.
Is there a link between how a firm manages its internal and external stakeholders? More specifically, are firms that give employees stock ownership and more say in running the enterprise more likely to engage with external stakeholders? This study seeks to answer these questions by elaborating on mechanisms that link employees to external stakeholders, such as the community, suppliers, and the environment. It tests these relationships using a sample of 347 private, mostly small-to-medium size firms, which completed a stakeholder impact (...)

Global Reporting Initiative and social impact in managing corporate responsibility: a case study of three multinationals in the forest industry.Anne Toppinen & Kaisa Korhonen-Kurki - 2013 - Business Ethics: A European Review 22 (2):202-217.
We examine recent evolution in corporate responsibility in the forest industry, an important natural‐resource‐based industry which is under rapid internationalisation and structural change under challenging financial pressures. We address two recent trends in corporate communication: corporate disclosure, that is the adoption of consistent external reporting standards [namely the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) ], and the growing awareness of engagement with and impact on local communities through philanthropy, generation of prosperity, communication and the social impact of core activities. This study uses (...)

After the Anthropocene: Green Republicanism in a Post-Capitalist World.Anne Fremaux - 2019 - Cham: Springer Verlag.
The environmental crisis is the most prominent challenge humanity has ever had to battle with, and humanity is currently failing. The Anthropocene—or so called ‘age of humans’—is indeed a period when the survival of humanity has never been so much at risk. This book locates itself in the field of critical green political theory. Fremaux's analysis of the current environmental crisis calls for us to embrace radical shifts in our modes of being; or, in other words, socially progressive innovations that (...)

Financial Management Effectiveness and Board Gender Diversity in Member-Governed, Community Financial Institutions.Anne Marie Ward & John Forker - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 141 (2):351-366.
Although non-profit organisations typically have high representation of females on their boards, relatively little is known about the effects of gender diversity in these organisations particularly in relation to financial management. In this archival study, resource dependency theory and agency analysis are combined to provide theoretical insight and empirical analysis of gender diversity on effective financial management in member-governed, community financial institutions. The investigation is possible due to the unique characteristics of the organisational form and region being examined—credit unions in (...)

Concepts and Cases in Nursing Ethics, Third Edition.Michael Yeo, Anne Moorhouse, Pamela Kahn & Patricia Rodney (eds.) - 2010 - Peterborough, CA: Broadview Press.
Concepts and Cases in Nursing Ethics is a case-based exploration of the core principles of health care ethics applied to nursing. The book is a collaboration between philosopher-ethicist Michael Yeo and nurse-ethicist and educators Anne Moorhouse, Pamela Khan, and Patricia Rodney. It thus combines philosophical and ethical analysis with extensive knowledge and experience in nursing and health care. The book is organized around six main concepts in health care ethics: beneficence, autonomy, truthfulness, confidentiality, justice, and integrity. A chapter is (...)

Concepts and Cases in Nursing Ethics maps the ethical landscape of contemporary nursing. The book is the product of a collaboration between philosopher-ethicist Michael Yeo, nurse-ethicist Anne Moorhouse, and six representatives of various areas of professional nursing. It thus combines philosophical and ethical analysis with nursing knowledge and experience in a manner that is both understandable and relevant. The book is organized around six main concepts in nursing ethics: beneficence, autonomy, confidentiality, truth-telling, justice, and integrity. A chapter is devoted (...)

As for Avicenna the human soul is a complete substance which does not inhere in the body nor is imprinted in it, asserting its survival after the death of the body seems easy. Yet, he needs the body to explain its individuation. The paper analyzes Avicenna's arguments in the De anima sections, V, 3 & 4, of the Shifā ' in order to explore the exact causal relation there is between the human soul and its body and confronts these arguments (...)

  37. Cultural analysis in historical sociology: The analytic and concrete forms of the autonomy of culture.Anne Kane - 1991 - Sociological Theory 9 (1):53-69.
In an effort to clear away confusions regarding the role of cultural analysis in historical explanation, this paper proposes a new approach to the issue of cultural autonomy. The premise is that there are two forms of cultural autonomy, analytic and concrete. Analytic autonomy posits the independent structure of culture-its elements, processes, and reproduction. It is achieved through the theoretical and artificial separation of culture from other social structures, conditions, and action. Concrete autonomy establishes the interconnection of culture with the (...)

'Right Relation' Revisited: Implications of Right Relation in the Practice of Church and Christian Perceptions of God.Anne Spalding - 2001 - Feminist Theology 10 (28):57-68.
The idea of right relation embodies mutuality and personal autonomy. Disagreement, anger, chaos, pain and helplessness are openly recognised within the community rather than suppressed in order to maintain what is held in common. Right relation has both personal and political benefits, and enables the promotion of love and justice in church and society. Sadly, right relation has often been far from the practice of church and, as a result, many Christian feminists have preferred to build right relation outside the (...)
