  5. Attention, Technology, and Creativity.Carolyn Dicey Jennings & Shadab Tabatabaeian - 2023 - In D. Graham Burnett & Justin E. H. Smith (eds.), Scenes of Attention: An Interdisciplinary Inquiry. Columbia University Press.
    An important topic in the ethics of technology is the extent to which recent digital technologies undermine user autonomy. Supporting evidence includes the fact that recent digital technologies are known to have an impact on attention, which balances "bottom-up" and "top-down" influences on cognition. As described in numerous papers, these technologies manipulate bottom-up influences through cognitive fluency, intermittent variable rewards, and other techniques, making them more attractive to the user. We further reason that recent digital technologies reduce the user’s (...) to exert top-down attention due to the scale of the content—they provide far more content at a much faster pace than other technologies, which over time reweights the balance of attention in favor of bottom-up influences. After reviewing evidence for these effects, including their temporal duration, we consider their downstream effects on both autonomy and creativity. We find that while the impact of recent digital technologies on top-down attention may allow for more idea generation, that creativity also depends on control, which is undermined by these technologies. We are more circumspect with autonomy, reasoning that in certain cases it might not make sense to see user autonomy as harmed through these effects. We conclude with other ways that recent digital technologies may improve creativity, which may act as an offset to the detrimental impacts of these technologies. (shrink)

    I begin–because I take the history of philosophy seriously–with the Scholastic distinction between categories and transcendentals. A category is a concept applicable to every being except God. A transcendental is a concept applicable to every being including God. Every being, it was thought, can be said to be one, good, and true–the last word meaning that the being can be known, and, at least by God, is known. Sometimes beauty was added to unity, goodness, and truth; sometimes also power, (...) to influence others. I accept all five transcendentals. But I think the Scholastics, like the ancient Greeks, somewhat misconceived the relation of being–also substance–to other fundamental concepts. Being seems to contrast with becoming, which applies to every concrete reality other than God as classically conceived; yet nothing in the five transcendentals explicitly involves becoming, even as a possibility. God was for two millennia defined as immutable perfection; other realities were by comparison imperfect as well as mutable. What in any sense becomes was supposed less than what simply is without becoming–as though the idea of changeable entities was arrived at by subtracting from the idea of immutable perfection!     The associative theory of creativity states that creativity is associated with differences in the structure of semantic memory, whereas the executive theory of creativity emphasises the role of top-down control for creative thought. For a powerful test of these accounts, individual semantic memory structure was modelled with a novel method based on semantic relatedness judgements and different criteria for network filtering were compared. The executive account was supported by a correlation between creative ability and broad retrieval (...). The associative account was independently supported, when network filtering was based on a relatedness threshold, but not when it was based on a fixed edge number or on the analysis of weighted networks. In the former case, creative ability was associated with shorter average path lengths and higher clustering of the network, suggesting that the semantic networks of creative people show higher small-worldness.
