Real-Time Height Measurement for Moving Pedestrians.Wenju Zhou, Fulong Yao, Wei Feng & Haikuan Wang - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-15.
Height measurement for moving pedestrians is quite significant in many scenarios, such as pedestrian positioning, criminal suspect tracking, and virtual reality. Although some existing height measurement methods can detect the height of the static people, it is hard to measure height accurately for moving pedestrians. Considering the height fluctuations in dynamic situation, this paper proposes a real-time height measurement based on the Time-of-Flight camera. Depth images in a continuous sequence are addressed to obtain the real-time height of the pedestrian with (...)

Heterogeneous and Homogenous Multistabilities in a Novel 4D Memristor-Based Chaotic System with Discrete Bifurcation Diagrams.Lilian Huang, Wenju Yao, Jianhong Xiang & Zefeng Zhang - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-15.
In this paper, a new 4D memristor-based chaotic system is constructed by using a smooth flux-controlled memristor to replace a resistor in the realization circuit of a 3D chaotic system. Compared with general chaotic systems, the chaotic system can generate coexisting infinitely many attractors. The proposed chaotic system not only possesses heterogeneous multistability but also possesses homogenous multistability. When the parameters of system are fixed, the chaotic system only generates two kinds of chaotic attractors with different positions in a very (...)

The Role of Consequences of Moral Action in Maximizing Moral Elevation.Zhuojun Yao & Robert Enright - 2018 - Journal of Moral Education 47 (4):1-15.
Moral elevation is described as a state of positive emotion that includes uplifting feelings, positive views of humanity and a desire to be a better person. Numerous empirical studies have demonstrated that elevation has powerful effects on people’s moral intention and behavior. The next step is to investigate how to maximize the emotion of elevation. According to the evolution of moral elevation research and the theory of moral disgust, we hypothesized that the consequences of moral action would influence moral elevation. (...)

A Deep Learning Approach for a Source Code Detection Model Using Self-Attention.Yao Meng & Long Liu - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-15.
With the development of deep learning, many approaches based on neural networks are proposed for code clone. In this paper, we propose a novel source code detection model At-biLSTM based on a bidirectional LSTM network with a self-attention layer. At-biLSTM is composed of a representation model and a discriminative model. The representation model firstly transforms the source code into an abstract syntactic tree and splits it into a sequence of statement trees; then, it encodes each of the statement trees with (...)

    The Undesirable & The Adesirable.Vida Yao - 2019 - Philosophy and Phenomenological Research 99 (1):115-130.
The guise of the good thesis can be understood as an attempt to distinguish between human motivations that are intelligible as desires and those that are not. I propose, first, that we understand the intelligibility at stake here as the kind necessary for the experience of reactive attitudes, both negative and positive, to the behavior and motivations of an agent. Given this, I argue that the thesis must be understood as proposing substantive content restrictions on how human agents perceive objects (...)

Language as an Instrument of Soteriological Transformation From the Madhyamaka Perspective.Yao-Ming Tsai - 2014 - Asian Philosophy 24 (4):330-345.
Buddhist teachings and practices can be viewed as a journey of soteriological transformation, where language, as a tool for the analysis of views, occupies a place of special significance and importance. This article examines how the concept of non-duality, from the Madhyamaka perspective, has served as a powerful rhetorical device with the explicit aim of fostering soteriological transformation. Among the various expressions representative of the Madhyamaka perspective, two are particularly explored in this article for their facilitation of soteriological transformation: the (...)

FMT and Microbial Medical Products: Generating High-Quality Evidence Through Good Governance.Pilar N. Ossorio & Yao Zhou - 2019 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 47 (4):505-523.
This article argues that current data for the safety and efficacy of fecal microbiota transplants as a treatment for any indication, including recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, is low-quality. It develops a governance proposal that encourages production of high-quality evidence by incentivizing well-designed RCTs of stool and stoolderived microbial products. The proposal would require that FDA change its current enforcement approach, but it would not require any change in statutes or regulations.

  13. Grace and Alienation.Vida Yao - 2020 - Philosophers' Imprint 20 (16):1-18.
According to an attractive conception of love as attention, discussed by Iris Murdoch, one strives to see one’s beloved accurately and justly. A puzzle for understanding how to love another in this way emerges in cases where more accurate and just perception of the beloved only reveals his flaws and vices, and where the beloved, in awareness of this, strives to escape the gaze of others - including, or perhaps especially, of his loved ones. Though less attentive forms of love (...)

    Boredom and the Divided Mind.Vida Yao - 2015 - Res Philosophica 92 (4):937-957.
On one predominant conception of virtue, the virtuous agent is, among other things, wholehearted in doing what she believes best. I challenge this condition of wholeheartedness by making explicit the connections between the emotion of boredom and the states of continence and akrasia. An easily bored person is more susceptible to these forms of disharmony because of two familiar characteristics of boredom. First, that we can be – and often are – bored by what it is that we know would (...)

In the literature, CSR’s roles on firm performance are found to be positive, negative, or neutral. This inconclusive pattern suggests there may be a more complicated mechanism at work than the traditional focus on simple linear associations. We propose and test an inverted-U-shaped relationship between CSR and shareholder value, the fundamental measure of firm performance. Further, we incorporate a critical firm attribute, marketing capability, to moderate the nonlinear link between CSR and shareholder value, thereby exploring a previous understudied area involving (...)

Student employability is a key aspect of any university degree. The relationship between high student learning outcomes and high employability is a problem that needs to be addressed and improved by colleges and universities. Students with high employability can find good jobs after graduation and perform well in the workplace. Employability is associated with the success of university education, thus giving the university a good reputation. This study explores the development of employability, alongside teaching and student learning abilities to examine (...)

    The Buddhist Theory of Self-Cognition.Zhihua Yao - 2005, 2009 - Routledge.
This highly original work explores the concept of self-awareness or self-consciousness in Buddhist thought. Its central thesis is that the Buddhist theory of self-cognition originated in a soteriological discussion of omniscience among the Mahasamghikas, and then evolved into a topic of epistemological inquiry among the Yogacarins. To illustrate this central theme, this book explores a large body of primary sources in Chinese, Pali, Sanskrit and Tibetan, most of which are presented to an English readership for the first time. It makes (...)

Parmenides expelled nonbeing from the realm of knowledge and forbade us to think or talk about it. But still there has been a long tradition of nay-sayings throughout the history of Western and Eastern philosophy. Are those philosophers talking about the same nonbeing or nothing? If not, how do their concepts of nothing differ from each other? Could there be different types of nothing? Surveying the traditional classifications of nothing or nonbeing in the East and West have led me to (...)

Finite-Time Synchronization of Uncertain Complex Dynamic Networks with Nonlinear Coupling.Yiping Luo & Yuejie Yao - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-14.
The finite-time synchronization control is studied in this paper for a class of nonlinear uncertain complex dynamic networks. The uncertainties in the network are unknown but bounded and satisfy some matching conditions. The coupling relationship between network nodes is described by a nonlinear function satisfying the Lipchitz condition. By introducing a simple Lyapunov function, two main results regarding finite-time synchronization of a class of complex dynamic networks with parameter uncertainties are derived. By employing some analysis techniques like matrix inequalities, suitable (...)

We combine prior research on ethical decision-making in organizations with a rational choice theory of corporate crime from criminology to develop a model of corporate offending that is tested with a sample of U.S. managers. Despite demands for increased sanctioning of corporate offenders, we find that the threat of legal action does not directly affect the likelihood of misconduct. Managers’ evaluations of the ethics of the act, measured using a multidimensional ethics scale, have a significant effect, as do outcome expectancies (...)

The problem of empty terms is one of the focal issues in analytic philosophy. Russell’s theory of descriptions, a proposal attempting to solve this problem, attracted much attention and is considered a hallmark of the analytic tradition. Scholars of Indian and Buddhist philosophy, e.g., McDermott, Matilal, Shaw and Perszyk, have studied discussions of empty terms in Indian and Buddhist philosophy. But most of these studies rely heavily on the Nyāya or Navya-Nyāya sources, in which Buddhists are portrayed as opponents to (...)

Recent anthropological analyses of Chinese attitudes towards privacy fail to pay adequate attention to more ordinary, but more widely shared ideas of privacy – ideas that, moreover, have changed dramatically since the 1980s as China has become more and more open to Western countries, cultures, and their network and computing technologies. I begin by reviewing these changes, in part to show how contemporary notions of privacy in China constitute a dialectical synthesis of both traditional Chinese emphases on the importance of (...)
