This research analyzes global children's literature from the National Council for Social Studies Notable Trade book lists from the past three years. Troubled belonging: Lived experience and the responsibility of citizenship.Elizabeth Kenyon - 2019 - Journal of Social Studies Research 43 (1):47-56.
Using data from course artifacts and interviews with three pre-service social studies teachers, I first look at how experiences from their past both reveal and shape their sense of citizenship, and then I explore how the participants hoped to use their social studies teaching to foster a particular type of citizenship.

The Physical and the Moral: Anthropology, Physiology, and Philosophical Medicine in France, 1750-1850.Elizabeth A. Williams - 1994 - Cambridge University Press.
This book explores the tradition of the 'science of man' in French medicine of the era 1750-1850, focusing on controversies about the nature of the 'physical-moral' relation and their effects on the role of medicine in French society. Its chief purpose is to recover the history of a holistic tradition in French medicine that has been neglected because it lay outside the mainstream themes of modern medicine, which include experimental, reductionist, and localistic conceptions of health and disease. Professor Williams also (...)

Medicalization of Rural Poverty: Challenges for Access.Elizabeth Weeks - 2018 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 46 (3):651-657.
This article provides a broad survey of issues facing rural communities and suggests that medicalization of poverty concepts and interventions need to be tailored to those populations. Rural poverty may be both broader and deeper than in urban areas. Those challenges seem to produce a constellation of health conditions, as rural residents struggle with unemployment and lack of opportunities. Relatedly, rural communities struggle to maintain financially viable hospitals and specialty providers. The article closes by offering a snapshot of rural-specific strategies (...)

Spooks and spoofs: relations between psychical research and academic psychology in Britain in the inter-war period.Elizabeth R. Valentine - 2012 - History of the Human Sciences 25 (2):67-90.
This article describes the relations between academic psychology and psychical research in Britain during the inter-war period, in the context of the fluid boundaries between mainstream psychology and both psychical research and popular psychology. Specifically, the involvement with Harry Price of six senior academic psychologists: William McDougall, William Brown, J. C. Flugel, Cyril Burt, C. Alec Mace and Francis Aveling, is described. Personal, metaphysical and socio-historical factors in their collaboration are discussed. It is suggested that the main reason for their (...)

The Limits of the Self: Immunology and Biological Identity.Elizabeth Vitanza (ed.) - 2012 - , US: Oup Usa.
What counts as an individual in the living world? What does it mean for a living thing to remain the same through time, while constantly changing? Immunology answers these questions with its theory of "self" and "nonself" which has dominated the field since the 1940s. Thomas Pradeu argues that this theory is inadequate, because immune responses to self constituents and immune tolerance of foreign entities are the rule, not the exception.

Justice, welfare and health care.Elizabeth Telfer - 1976 - Journal of Medical Ethics 2 (3):107.
Miss Telfer offers a new analysis, classifying health care into four systems, only one of which, the 'laissez-faire' type, is unlikely to be acceptable today. The other three systems are defined here as 'liberal humanitarian', 'liberal socialist' and 'pure socialist'. Each is analysed for its content and for the views of its protagonists and antagonists. On these issues no dogma is proclaimed as the author says she has sought to 'bring out some of the principles at issue in any discussion (...)

Political Liberalism and Its Feminist Potential.Elizabeth F. Edenberg - 2015 - Dissertation, Vanderbilt University
Rawlsian political liberalism is often rejected by feminist philosophers on the grounds that it reinstates a problematic public/private divide and includes sexist comprehensive doctrines as reasonable. My dissertation reclaims a revised version of Rawlsian political liberalism for feminist objectives. Using children who are raised in accordance with sexist comprehensive doctrines as a test case, I investigate the permissible limitations for reasonable pluralism. In the first half of my dissertation, I investigate challenges posed to Rawlsian stability and civic education. I argue (...)
