Most philosophical writing is impersonal and argumentative, but many important philosophers have nevertheless written accounts of their own lives. Filling a gap in the market for a text focusing on autobiography as philosophy, this collection discusses several such autobiographies in the light of their authors' broader work, and considers whether there are any philosophical tasks for which life accounts are particularly appropriate. Instead of the common impersonal and argumentative forms of ordinary philosophical discussion, these autobiographical texts are deeply personal and (...) largely narrative or explanatory. Original and distinctive in its efforts to think about the writings of historically recognized philosophers as communicative acts governed by their own distinctive interests and purposes, the book reveals that it is as much about the texts and the authors as it is about their doctrines and arguments. As a result the book steps back from many of the issues of substantive philosophical discussion to reflect on certain forms of writing as means to philosophical ends, to consider what those ends have included. Many years ago, Maurice Mandelbaum remarked that there were three branches of “formal” philosophy of history. One of these branches was said to deal with the objectivity of historical knowledge; a second was said to be devoted to the relation of the discipline of history to other branches of knowledge. Mandelbaum described the third branch as the “pragmatics” of the discipline of history. It was devoted to determining the “practical, educational, or intellectual value of a study of the past.” Mandelbaum (...) conceded that this is a relatively minor branch of the philosophy of history and remarked that—as of 1952—investigations in the field had become infrequent. He also claimed that this branch of the field “presupposes” the other two. (shrink)

Gupta effectively probes the methodological and ethical presuppostions of Evidence Based Medicine, and its more contestable application to psychiatry. She concludes with an endorsement of a very modest reformulation of it as one guide to practice among many.

The book reviewed is a chronological reconstruction of Freud's theory of mind which claims a particular significance for the later theoretical writings as motivated by both prior developments in the body of theory and new materials to explain.

Big Ideas for Little Kids includes everything a teacher, a parent, or a college student needs to teach philosophy to elementary school children from picture books. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book explains why it is important to allow young children access to philosophy during primary-school education. Wartenberg also gives advice on how to construct a "learner-centered" classroom, in which children discuss philosophical issues with one another as they respond to open-ended questions by saying whether they agree (...) or disagree with what others have said. Thomas Reid is now recognized as one of the towering figures of the Enlightenment. Best known for his published writings on epistemology and moral theory, he was also an accomplished mathematician and natural philosopher, as an earlier volume of his manuscripts edited by Paul Wood for the Edinburgh Reid Edition, Thomas Reid on the Animate Creation, has shown. The Correspondence of Thomas Reid collects all of the known letters to and from Reid in a fully annotated form. (...) Letters already published by Sir William Hamilton and others have been reedited, and roughly half of the letters included appear in print for the first time. Writing in 1802, Reid's disciple and biographer Dugald Stewart doubted that Reid's correspondence &"would be generally interesting.&" This collection proves otherwise, for the letters illuminate virtually every aspect of Reid's life and career and, in some instances, provide us with invaluable evidence about activities otherwise undocumented in his manuscripts or published works. Through his correspondence we can trace Reid's relations with contemporaries such as David Hume and his colleagues at both King's College, Aberdeen, and the University of Glasgow, as well as his engagement with the most controversial philosophical, scientific, and political issues of his day. Il ya 25 ans, le terrain était vierge en savoirs établis comme en données régulières et accessibles. La situation évolue en liaison notamment avec les changements de fait des relations économiques à l'échelle mondiale. Dans le contexte de la phase idéologique de «la nouvelle économie» des années 1990 qui a engagé bien (...) des travaux de chercheurs de «l'économie de l'innovation» depuis, les liens paraissent inévitables. Les SIC pourraient, encore jeter davantage de ponts avec l'économie et inciter les économistes à retrouver les dimensions sociales et humaines dans les échanges à la fois matériels et immatériels caractérisant la production des «biens culturels».Teaching the media or write this field was, in many respects, a challenge for those under Information Science and Communication. 25 years ago, the land was virgin established knowledge as regular data and accessible. The situation is changing especially in connection with changes made economic relations globally. In the context of the ideological phase of the "new economy" of the 1990s who initiated much of the work of researchers from the "innovation economy" from the links seem inevitable. CIS could still build more bridges with the economy and encourage economists to find the social and human dimensions in trade both material and immaterial characterizing the production of "cultural property".
