This Special Issue [available free online] co-edited by Peg Brand Weiser (University of Arizona) and R. Scott Kretchmar (Pennsylvania State University) is entitled, "The Myles Brand (1942-2009) Era at the NCAA: A Tribute and Scholarly Review." The late Myles Brand was a philosopher (of action theory; social and political applied philosophy, philosophy of sport), former department chair (University of Illinois at Chicago; University of Arizona), dean (Arizona), provost (The Ohio State University), president (University of Oregon; Indiana University), (...) and fourth president of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). [An extensive website created in 2020 by Peg Brand Weiser of over 300 entries of his work--speeches, essays, podcasts, and videos--can be found at a website under his name.] This Special Issue includes insightful essays on the legacy of Myles Brand by authors who dig deeply into continuing controversies within higher education, intercollegiate athletics, and the values, principles, and style of Brand's leadership. They take up the gauntlet to dissect and disseminate Brand's lasting influence on the institution of the NCAA in terms of the decisions and policies enacted between 2003 and 2009 that continue to affect the well-being of today's student-athletes, the sustainability of high-cost intercollegiate competition, and now, the "threat to" or "abandonment of" (depending on your point of view) "amateur status" due to students' newfound economic agency and ability to profit from NILs (Name, Image, Likeness) monetary deals. A fuller publication from Indiana University Press followed in 1995 edited by Brand [Weiser] and Korsmeyer entitled, Feminism and Tradition in Aesthetics.

This anthology offers a unique collection of contributions focusing on the discussion about the so-called dual-process theories within the field of moral psychology. In general, dual-process theories state that in cognitive systems, two sorts of processes can be differentiated: an affective, associative process and an analytical, rule-based process. This distinction recently entered the debate on the relationship between intuitive and rational approaches to explaining the phenomenon of moral judgment. The increasing interest in these theories raises questions concerning their general impact (...) on social contexts. The anthology aims at presenting stepping-stones of an analysis of the merits and drawbacks of this development. For that purpose, the authors discuss general questions concerning the relationship between ethics and empirical sciences, methodological questions, reassessments of established terminology and societal implications of dual-process theories in moral psychology. In 1889, Danish literary critic Georg Brandes published "Aristocratic Radicalism: An Essay on Friedrich Nietzsche," which transformed the as-yet-unknown German-Swiss philosopher into a European, and ultimately global, phenomenon. The article sparked a furious public debate between Brandes and a fellow Dane, philosopher Harald Høffding, who swiftly issued a rebuttal, "Democratic Radicalism: An Objection." What began as a scholarly disagreement over Nietzsche's philosophy rapidly spiraled into a sprawling contest of competing visions of society's future, one radically aristocratic and the other radically (...) democratic. Marking the moment at which the uniquely Nordic concept of social democratic welfare was first contested in the public sphere, this debate provides insights into not only Nietzschean philosophy and its immediate reception but also the foundational concept of modern Scandinavian social, cultural, and political organization. This volume presents, for the first time in any language other than Danish, the debate in its entirety: three essays by Brandes and three by Høffding. A critical introduction by editor and translator William Banks explores the exchange in its context and convincingly argues that the principles contested by the two Danish luminaries still very much resonate in Western society today. In "Krisis der europäischen Wissenschaften und die transzen­ dentale Phänomenologie", dem zuletzt vom Husserl-Archiv in Löwen veröffentlichten Werk Husserls erscheint deutlich, welche Stellung und welche Aufgabe für ihn seine Phänomenologie in der Geschichte hat. "Menschentum überhaupt ist wesensmässig Menschsein in ge­ nerativ und sozial verbundenen Menschheiten, und ist der Mensch Vernunftwesen (animal rationale), so ist er es nur, sofern seine ganze Menschheit Vernunftmenschheit ist -latent auf Ver­ nunft ausgerichtet oder offen ausgerichtet auf die zu sich selbst gekommene, für sich selbst (...) offenbar gewordene und nunmehr in Wesensnotwendigkeit das menschheitliche Werden bewusst lei t end e Entelechie. Philosophie, Wissenschaft wäre demnach die historische Bewegung der Offenbarung der universalen, dem Menschentum als solchem 'ein­ geborenen' Vern unft". 1 Das Wesentliche des Menschen ist für Husserl im europä­ ischen Menschentum zum Durchbruch gekommen. Es ist das ihm mit der Geburt der griechischen Philosophie zugewachsene Telos, Mensch aus Vernunft sein zu wollen und nur als solcher sein zu können, "... in der unendlichen Bewegung von latenter zu offenbarer Vernunft und im unendlichen Bestreben der Selbst­ normierung durch diese seine menschheitliche Wahrheit und 2 Echtheit". Im vorläufigen Scheitern dieser Bewegung liegt für Husserl der Grund der sich in unzähligen Symptomen äussernden "Krisis 3 des europäischen Daseins". Mit dieser Erkenntnis aber ist diese Krisis kein dunkles Schicksal, kein undurchdringliches Verhält­ nis mehr, sondern wird verständlich und durchschaubar. (shrink)
