    The Trial of P. Egnatius Celer.J. K. Evans - 1979 - Classical Quarterly 29 (01):198-.
The literary sources for the Flavian and Antonine periods of Roman history, it is a notorious and unhappy fact, where they exist at all, are infuriatingly fragmentary, frequently obscure, too frequently inaccurate or mendacious. Significant gaps still linger even in chronology; hence it can hardly occasion surprise that we are rarely permitted a glimpse of the political activity which preoccupied the emperors and Senate.

Rationality in the Selection Task: Epistemic Utility Versus Uncertainty Reduction.Jonathan Evans & David E. Over - 1996 - Psychological Review 103 (2):356-363.
    M. Oaksford and N. Chater presented a Bayesian analysis of the Wason selection task in which they proposed that people choose cards in order to maximize expected information gain as measured by reduction in uncertainty in the Shannon-Weaver information theory sense. It is argued that the EIG measure is both psychologically implausible and normatively inadequate as a measure of epistemic utility. The article is also concerned with the descriptive account of findings in the selection task literature offered by Oaksford and (...)

    The Buddhist Nirvana and Its Western Interpreters. [REVIEW]J. H. P. - 1969 - Review of Metaphysics 22 (4):769-769.
This is a well-written analysis of the interpreters and interpretations of the Buddhist nirvana from the West. The first chapter treats the West's encounters with Buddhism before 1800, Marco Polo, etc. The remainder of the book deals with the interpretations of nirvana by Eugène Burnouf, Friedrich Max Müller, James D'Alwis, Robert Caesar Childres, Schopenhauer, Wagner, Nietzsche, Hermann Oldenberg, the Rhys Davidses, La Vallée Poussin, and Stcherbatsky. The author's own opinion is given in a few pages at the end of the (...)

    The Foundations of Empiricism. [REVIEW]J. M. P. - 1966 - Review of Metaphysics 19 (3):585-585.
In this lecture Evans studies one of the basic presuppositions of empiricism: the central doctrine of the theory of meaning of propositions, with special reference to the cleavage between verbal definition—the defining of words by reference to other words—and ostensive definition—the defining of a word by "pointing" to its object. The author shows that ostensive definition is wholly inadequate to the task of defining such words as nouns and adjectives—one can point only to their instances in the world and not (...)

Issues of “Cost, Capabilities, and Scope” in Characterizing Adoptees' Lack of “Genetic-Relative Family Health History” as an Avoidable Health Disparity: Response to Open Peer Commentaries on “Does Lack of ‘Genetic-Relative Family Health History’ Represent a Potentially Avoidable Health Disparity for Adoptees?”.Thomas May, James P. Evans, Kimberly A. Strong, Kaija L. Zusevics, Arthur R. Derse, Jessica Jeruzal, Alison LaPean Kirschner, Michael H. Farrell & Harold D. Grotevant - 2016 - American Journal of Bioethics 16 (12):4-8.
Many adoptees face a number of challenges relating to separation from biological parents during the adoption process, including issues concerning identity, intimacy, attachment, and trust, as well as language and other cultural challenges. One common health challenge faced by adoptees involves lack of access to genetic-relative family health history. Lack of GRFHx represents a disadvantage due to a reduced capacity to identify diseases and recommend appropriate screening for conditions for which the adopted person may be at increased risk. In this (...)

    Uncomfortable Implications: Placebo Equivalence in Drug Management of a Functional Illness.H. M. Evans & A. P. S. Hungin - 2007 - Journal of Medical Ethics 33 (11):635-638.
Using a fictional but representative general practice consultation, involving the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome in a patient who is anxious for some relief from the discomfort his condition entails, this paper argues that when both a drug fails to out-perform placebo and the condition in question is a functional illness with no demonstrable underlying pathology, then the action of the drug is not only no better than placebo, and it is also no different from it either. The paper also (...)

Ψ-Epistemic Quantum Cosmology?Peter W. Evans, Sean Gryb & Karim P. Y. Thébault - 2016 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part B: Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics 56:1-12.
This paper provides a prospectus for a new way of thinking about the wavefunction of the universe: a Ψ-epistemic quantum cosmology. We present a proposal that, if successfully implemented, would resolve the cosmological measurement problem and simultaneously allow us to think sensibly about probability and evolution in quantum cosmology. Our analysis draws upon recent work on the problem of time in quantum gravity and causally symmet- ric local hidden variable theories. Our conclusion weighs the strengths and weaknesses of the approach (...)

    Operator Derivation of the Gauge-Invariant Proca and Lehnert Equations; Elimination of the Lorenz Condition.P. K. Anastasovski, T. E. Bearden, C. Ciubotariu, W. T. Coffey, L. B. Crowell, G. J. Evans, M. W. Evans, R. Flower, A. Labounsky, B. Lehnert, P. R. Molnár, S. Roy & J. P. Vigier - 2000 - Foundations of Physics 30 (7):1123-1129.
Using covariant derivatives and the operator definitions of quantum mechanics, gauge invariant Proca and Lehnert equations are derived and the Lorenz condition is eliminated in U(1) invariant electrodynamics. It is shown that the structure of the gauge invariant Lehnert equation is the same in an O(3) invariant theory of electrodynamics.

On Saturday morning, February 28, 1953, the mystery of heredity appeared secure. Humans hadn't the faintest idea of how genetic information was transmitted—how the uncanny resemblance between mother and daughter, grandfather and grandson was conveyed across generations. Yet, by that Saturday afternoon, two individuals, James Watson and Francis Crick, had glimpsed the solution to these mysteries. The story of Watson and Crick's great triumph has been told and retold and has rightly entered the pantheon of scientific legend. But Watson and (...)
