From the early to mid-1970s, Michel Foucault posited that power consists of a relation rather than a substance and that this relation is comprised of unequal forces engaged in a warlike struggle against each other, resulting invariably in the domination of some forces over others. This understanding of power, which he retrospectively dubbed `Nietzsche's hypothesis' and `the model of war', underpinned his well-known analyses of disciplinary power. Yet, Foucault in his Collège de France course from the academic year 1975-6, `Society (...) Must Be Defended', suddenly began to call into question this understanding and his doubts about it did not abate well into the late 1970s. In this article, we suggest that his militant politics in the early 1970s sustained his adherence to the war model and that his more cautious political attitude later in the decade underpinned his suspicions about this model. ABSTRACT In “Il faut défendre la société”, Foucault attempted to historicize and criticize Nietzsche’s equating of the social with struggle. In order to do so, Foucault produced a descriptive discursive history of his genealogical project by deploying the method of the critical archaeology. Foucault realized thereinafter that his archaeological exposition of the genealogical discourse in fact laid bare a close historical and conceptual bond between genealogy and modern racial discourses. In the first lectures, Foucault, unearthed the genealogical discourse hidden in (...) the literature written by the nobility as they attempted to resist the centralisation of royal power. In the latter part of his lectures, he described a discursive interplay between genealogy-as-struggle and the biopolitical practices of the modern state. As such, he gave a tentatively description how the modern state inherited and extensively applied the notion of struggle in its biopolitical control on its populations. The immoral and historical consequences of this affinity, resulting in the biopolitics of genocide, warranted Foucault to distance himself from Nietzsche’s concept, which in effect resulted in rethinking the social within the framework of gouvernmentalité, in which struggle was a modality rather than the prime mover of society. This review of Turner’s “Computational Artifacts” focuses on one of the key novelties of the book, namely the proposal to understand the nature of computer programs as a “trinity” of specification, symbolic program, and physical process, replacing the traditional dualist views of programs as functional/structural or as symbolic/physical. This trinitarian view is found to be robust and helpful to solve typical issues of dualist views. Drawing comparisons with Simon’s view of the artifact as an interface, the author suggests that this (...) trinitarian view may characterize not only computational artifacts but also artifacts in general. In 1976, in “Society Must be Defended,” Foucault did more than offer an alternative genealogy of his own genealogical perspective to the one he is sometimes taken to have provided in “Nietzsche, Genealogy, History.” He also, by implication, located Nietzsche within that genealogy, one result of which is that he gave what amounts to a new perspective on how Nietzsche might be placed within the history of racisms.

Havia sobre uma mesa folhas de papel em branco, tinta, uma pena. Ora, um dia, há sobre essas mesmas folhas o texto 'Discurso do método'. Aconteceu, então, alguma coisa, um texto que significa uma filosofia nova; apresenta-se então uma história dos acontecimentos da filosofia. Isto, sem dúvida, numa época em que as histórias tradicionalmente dos acontecimentos tentavam sê-lo o menos possível; mas por que não enxergar uma reação ao mesmo tempo análoga e de sentido contrário no caso de uma história (...) que tradicionalmente não era dos acontecimentos e que seria tentada a tornar-se uma? Nessas linhas publicadas em 1978, substituí-se 'Discurso do método' por alguns pensamentos do Sr. Pascal sobre a religião e apresenta-se em seguida uma história dos acontecimentos das idéias, pois o que acontece não é uma filosofia. O que acontece, de fato, é uma conversão que faz do convertido um conversor. Tal é o ponto de vista escolhido para olhar e tentar explicar o pensamento de Pascal, entendendo-se que ele não exclui outros pontos de vista. (shrink)
