Evolutionary accounts of the origin of human morality may be speculative to some extent, but they contain some very plausible claims, such as the claim that ethics evolved as a response to the demands of group living. Regarding the phenomenon of moral progress, it has been argued both that it is ruled out by an evolutionary approach, and that it can be explained by it. It has even been claimed that an evolutionary account has the potential to advance progress in (...) the moral domain. This paper explores the complex relationship between evolutionary explanations of morality and the possibility of moral progress. It seeks to answer the question as to what these explanations are able to tell us about the possibility of moral progress and the ways in which such progress can be achieved. It is argued that evolutionary explanations can inform moral education and other forms of moral enhancement, and that increased evolutionary knowledge figures among the changes in the circumstances of morality that can lead to moral progress. Evolutionary explanations can show us certain limits to the possibility for humans of progressing morally as well as certain enabling conditions. It is argued that both aspects – enhancement and changes in the circumstances – are equally important for the achievement of moral progress. This is illustrated by means of two examples of areas in which moral progress seems possible: our relationship towards the distant poor and our relationship towards non-human animals. (shrink)

Sie verlaBt jedoch an keiner Stelle den Weg einer Interpretation der Phanomenologie der Erfahrbarkeit fremder Subjektivitat im Ge­ samtzusammenhang des Husserlschen Projektes einer transzendental­ phanomenologischen Philosophie aufder Grundlage der aus dem Nach­ laB verOffentlichten Schriften zu einer Phanomenologie der Intersubjek­ tivitat. Das systematische Ziel gibt jedoch die Erlaubnis, aus den ge­ danklichen Bestanden dieses Werkes einen philosophischen Gedanken­ gang zu entwickeln, der in vielem nicht mit den bisherigen Auslegungen iibereinstimmt. Die Untersuchung ist nicht (...) in erster Linie bemiiht, den Text nur getreulich nachzuzeichnen, sondern nimmt Gewichtungen vor und stellt Zusammenhange her, die es erlauben, zu einem neuen Entwurf zu kommen, der in mancher Hinsicht so nicht in den zu Husserls Lebzei­ ten veroffentlichten Texten steht. Die Aufgabe lautet folglich: auf der Grundlage von Husserls NachlaB-Texten zum Thema Intersubjektivitat eine philosophische Theorie auszuarbeiten, die iiber ein historisches In­ teresse hinaus systematische Bedeutung gewinnen kann. Aufgrund des systematischen und rekonstruktiven Interesses bleibt im folgenden die Entwicklungsgeschichte des Husserlschen Denkens weitgehend unberiicksichtigt. Dariiber hinaus beschrankt sich die Un­ tersuchung auf das transzendentalphilosophische Stadium der Husserl­ schen Philosophie und beschaftigt sich nicht mit dem Versuch einer rein deskriptiven Phanomenologie. Any account of “what is special about the human brain” (Passingham 2008) must specify the neural basis of our unique ability to produce speech and delineate how these remarkable motor capabilities could have emerged in our hominin ancestors. Clinical data suggest that the basal ganglia provide a platform for the integration of primate-general mechanisms of acoustic communication with the faculty of articulate speech in humans. Furthermore, neurobiological and paleoanthropological data point at a two-stage model of the phylogenetic evolution of this (...) crucial prerequisite of spoken language: (i) monosynaptic refinement of the projections of motor cortex to the brainstem nuclei that steer laryngeal muscles, presumably, as part of a “phylogenetic trend” associated with increasing brain size during hominin evolution; (ii) subsequent vocal-laryngeal elaboration of cortico-basal ganglia circuitries, driven by human-specificFOXP2mutations.;>This concept implies vocal continuity of spoken language evolution at the motor level, elucidating the deep entrenchment of articulate speech into a “nonverbal matrix” (Ingold 1994), which is not accounted for by gestural-origin theories. Moreover, it provides a solution to the question for the adaptive value of the “first word” (Bickerton 2009) since even the earliest and most simple verbal utterances must have increased the versatility of vocal displays afforded by the preceding elaboration of monosynaptic corticobulbar tracts, giving rise to enhanced social cooperation and prestige. At the ontogenetic level, the proposed model assumes age-dependent interactions between the basal ganglia and their cortical targets, similar to vocal learning in some songbirds. In this view, the emergence of articulate speech builds on the “renaissance” of an ancient organizational principle and, hence, may represent an example of “evolutionary tinkering” (Jacob 1977). In dem vorliegenden Buch wird auf den Anfang einer Ethik des Selbstbewußtseins im zentralen Gedankengang der idealistischen Philosophie aufmerksam zu machen gesucht: für die Kantische Philosophie mit Hilfe systematischer Überlegungen und bei Fichte, Schelling und Hegel anhand ausgewählter Texte. In dieser Ethik ist das Desiderat einer Wahrung der Eigenheit des Anderen erfüllt, indem sie als integraler Bestandteil einer Strukturexplikation des Selbstbewußtseins in der Aufklärung der Verständlichkeit der Welt für uns mit ethischen Konzepten entwickelt wird.Das Bewußtsein von sich selbst enthält eine (...) Unbestimmtheit in sich, die allein durch die ethische Beziehung zum Anderen so strukturiert zu denken ist, daß das Selbstbewußtsein weder seine interne Differenz verliert, noch in eine Beziehung extern bestimmter Relata transformiert wird. Das Ethische und das Sollen werden damit nicht als Phänomene in der Welt aufgenommen, sondern aus jener Bestimmungslosigkeit des Selbstbewußtseins entwickelt, aus der verständliche Bestimmtheiten der Welt auszuarbeiten sich die idealistische Philosophie zur genuinen Aufgabe gemacht hatte.Indem die idealistische Subjektphilosophie die Untrennbarkeit ihres tragenden Gedankens eines bewußten Selbstverhältnisses von seiner Explikation in ethischen Konzepten denkt, nimmt die Subjektivität auf der Grundlage des Selbstbewußtseins eo ipso den Status ethischer Verpflichtetheit an. In dieser ethischen Beziehung wird der Andere in einer Bestimmtheit anerkannt, die er sich nur selbst geben kann, so daß sie seine Selbstexplikation bleibt. Das Eigene des Anderen kommt deshalb im Innersten des als Selbstbewußtsein gedachten Subjekts in Gestalt der ethischen Verantwortlichkeit vor der und für die Freiheit des Anderen zur Geltung.Die idealistische Subjektphilosophie denkt das absolut Andere also bereits an ihrem Anfang in der keiner exogenen Bestimmtheit zugänglichen Selbstbestimmtheit des Selbstbewußtseins. Ein Bewußtsein des Anderen läßt sich demnach direkt im Zentrum der Philosophie des Selbstbewußtseins entdecken: als Ethik, die allein die Struktur des Selbstbewußtseins in seiner Identität und Differenz verständlich machen kann.
