  1. Rural Society in Southeast India.Kathleen Gough - 2008 - Cambridge University Press.
This book is a comparative study of caste and class in two small villages in the Thanjāvūr district of southeast India based on fieldwork done by the author in 1951–3. Differing from the usual village study, Gough's work traces the history of the villages over the past century and examines the impact of colonialism on the district since 1770. The volume's theoretical significance lies in its attempt to define more clearly the characteristics of rural class relations, particularly addressing the (...)

Design of teaching materials informed by consideration of learning-impaired students.Laurence Goldstein & A. Martin Gough - unknown
The general aim of this project is to fundamentally re-think the design of teaching materials in view of what is now known about cognitive deficits and about what Howard Gardner has termed ‘multiple intelligences’. The applicant has implemented this strategy in two distinct areas, the first involving the writing of an English language programme for Chinese speakers, the second involving the construction of specialized equipment for teaching elementary logic to blind students. The next phase is to test the effectiveness of (...)

Aesthetics and the Containment of Grief.Kathleen Marie Higgins - 2020 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 78 (1):9-20.
My point of departure is the observation that people ubiquitously turn to aesthetic practices in response to the loss of a loved one. I argue that profound loss catapults the bereaved person into an alternate “world” that differs in marked ways from the world we usually occupy, an alternate world lacking even the basic coherence we need to function. Aesthetic practices facilitate restoration of coherence to our experience, as well as reconnection with the social world and recovery from the breakdown (...)

Conceptualizing Fraudulent Studies as Viruses: New Models for Handling Retractions.Kathleen Montgomery & Amalya L. Oliver - 2017 - Minerva 55 (1):49-64.
This paper addresses the growing problem of retractions in the scientific literature of publications that contain bad data, also called “false science.” While the problem is particularly acute in the biomedical literature because of the life-threatening implications when treatment recommendations and decisions are based on false science, it is relevant for any knowledge domain, including the social sciences, law, and education. Yet current practices for handling retractions are seen as inadequate. We use the metaphor of a virus to illustrate how (...)

    Students’ Perceptions of Academic Dishonesty: A Nine-Year Study from 2005 to 2013.Kathleen K. Molnar - 2015 - Journal of Academic Ethics 13 (2):135-150.
Students from a small, private, religious college and a large, public university completed questionnaires asking their perceptions of academic dishonesty at their institution. The questionnaires used a 5-point Likert scale to determine whether the students felt it was acceptable to cheat for a specific reason such as plagiarizing or copying homework both using and not using technology. Between fall 2005 and fall 2013, 1792 usable questionnaires were collected using similar methodology, questionnaires and respondents to control for possible extraneous variables. An (...)

Evidence on Whether Banks Consider Carbon Risk in Their Lending Decisions.Kathleen Herbohn, Ru Gao & Peter Clarkson - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (1):155-175.
Banks face a dilemma in choosing between maximising profits and facilitating the sustainable use of resources within a carbon-constrained future. This study provides empirical evidence on this dilemma, investigating whether a bank loan announcement for a firm with high carbon risk conveys information to investors about the firm’s carbon risk exposure collected through a bank’s pre-loan screening and ongoing monitoring. We use a sample of 120 bank loan announcements for ASX-listed firms over the period 2009–2015. We measure high carbon risk (...)

    A Feminist Defense of the Critical-Logical Model.Kathleen Miller - 1995 - Informal Logic 17 (3).
In his (1994) "Feminism, Argumentation, and Coalescence", Michael Gilbert argues that the "Critical Thinking Industry" is antagonistic to women. Because the critical-logical skills in which the industry deals tend to be gender-specific. its adoption as the dominant mode of discourse disenfranchises women, making its overhaul a moral imperative. Following a variety offeminist epistemologists. this conclusion is reached by confiating "critical reasoning" with "communicating about ideas," as though the two were inseparable. In this paper it is argued that the inclusion of (...)

Ethical Considerations for Nurses in Clinical Trials.Kathleen Oberle & Marion Allen - 2006 - Nursing Ethics 13 (2):180-186.
Ethical issues arise for nurses involved in all phases of clinical trials regardless of whether they are caregivers, research nurses, trial co-ordinators or principal investigators. Potential problem areas centre on nurses’ moral obligation related to methodological issues as well as the notions of beneficence/non-maleficence and autonomy. These ethical concerns can be highly upsetting to nurses if they are not addressed, so it is imperative that they are discussed fully prior to the initiation of a trial. Failure to resolve these issues (...)

Feminist Critiques of Science: The Epistemological and Methodological Literature.Alison Wylie, Kathleen Okruhlik, Leslie Thielen-Wilson & Sandra Morton - 1989 - Women's Studies International Forum 12 (3):379-388.
Feminist critiques of science are widely dispersed and often quite inaccessible as a body of literature. We describe briefly some of the influences evident in this literature and identify several key themes which are central to current debates. This is the introduction to a bibliography of general critiques of science, described as the “core literature,” and a selection of feminist critiques of biology. Our objective has been to identify those analyses which raise reflexive (epistemological and methodological) questions about the status (...)

Time and Narrative, Volume 2.Kathleen McLaughlin & David Pellauer (eds.) - 1984 - University of Chicago Press.
In volume 1 of this three-volume work, Paul Ricoeur examined the relations between time and narrative in historical writing. Now, in volume 2, he examines these relations in fiction and theories of literature. Ricoeur treats the question of just how far the Aristotelian concept of "plot" in narrative fiction can be expanded and whether there is a point at which narrative fiction as a literary form not only blurs at the edges but ceases to exist at all. Though some semiotic (...)

How It Is: The Native American Philosophy of V. F. Cordova.Kathleen Dean Moore, Kurt Peters, Ted Jojola & Amber Lacy (eds.) - 2007 - University of Arizona Press.
Viola Cordova was the first Native American woman to receive a PhD in philosophy. Even as she became an expert on canonical works of traditional Western philosophy, she devoted herself to defining a Native American philosophy. Although she passed away before she could complete her life’s work, some of her colleagues have organized her pioneering contributions into this provocative book. In three parts, Cordova sets out a complete Native American philosophy. First she explains her own understanding of the nature of (...)

Development of an Instrument to Investigate Parents' Perceptions of Research with Newborn Babies.Kathleen Oberle, Nalini Singhal, Joelene Huber & Ellen Burgess - 2000 - Nursing Ethics 7 (4):327-338.
Neonatal intensive care nurses are often involved in research protocols as investigators, research assistants or staff nurses implementing the protocol and providing support and explanations to families. It is important, therefore, that nurses have information about parents’ understanding of and attitudes towards the research process. The purpose of this study was to begin an exploration of parents’ perceptions about research with newborn babies through the development and validation of a survey instrument. The questionnaire included: demographic questions; scaled items about research (...)

Living with Solomon Living with Nietzsche: A Reply to Tubert and Soll.Kathleen M. Higgins - 2015 - Journal of Nietzsche Studies 46 (3):451-463.
ABSTRACT In Living with Nietzsche, Robert C. Solomon defends the view that Nietzsche is an existentialist avant la lettre, a view that I defend. I concur with Ariela Tubert that her case that Nietzsche is a skeptic about metaphysical freedom supports Solomon's position, even if he did not necessarily see Nietzsche as holding a skeptical view. I counter Ivan Soll's arguments against Solomon's view that Nietzsche was mainly interested in promoting the life of passion, which Soll takes as insufficiently appreciative (...)

The Age of German Idealism: Routledge History of Philosophy Volume Vi.Kathleen M. Higgins & Robert C. Solomon (eds.) - 1993 - New York: Routledge.
The turn of the nineteenth century marked a rich and exciting explosion of philosophical energy and talent. The enormity of the revolution set off in philosophy by Immanuel Kant was comparable, by Kant's own estimation, with the Copernican Revolution that ended the Middle Ages. The movement he set in motion, the fast-moving and often cantankerous dialectic of `German Idealism', inspired some of the most creative philosophers in modern times: including G.W.F. Hegel and Arthur Schopenhauer as well as those who reacted (...)
