    Concerning an essential condition of cooperative work.Malcolm G. Preston - 1948 - Philosophy of Science 15 (2):96-99.
The purpose of my remarks is to draw some conclusions about the conditions which must be realized if physical, biological and social scientists are to work effectively in reaching common goals. I shall draw these conclusions on the basis of my experience as a psychologist whose participation in the war effort found him a member of a team composed principally of physicists and research engineers. I may say that while my experiences were largely at the level of the lower echelons (...)

Centrality of Sampajāno in the Buddha’s Teachings.Malcolm R. Printer - 2019 - Journal of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research 36 (2):217-228.
The Buddha taught a unique and verifiable method to end suffering in sentient beings. This is the eightfold noble path. But there are 84,000 discourses in which the Buddha describes just how one may come out of suffering. Is a seeker then expected to learn all these 84,000 discourses? Is there a shorter way out for the ardent meditator? There is. There is one discourse in particular that propounds the essence of the Buddha’s Teaching in crisp and clear terms. It (...)

The disambiguation of the Royal Academy of Arts.Malcolm Quinn - 2011 - History of European Ideas 37 (1):53-62.
This article uses Jeremy Bentham's notion of disambiguation, which links language to power and ‘sinister interest’, to analyse criticisms of the Royal Academy of Arts by Benthamites and Philosophic Radicals at the Select Committee on Arts and Manufactures of 1835/6. This practice of disambiguation aimed to produce a distinction between the Royal Academy of Arts and the publicly funded art school. I situate this activity within the linguistic turn taken by Bentham's ethics, and its relevance to a dilemma of pedagogy (...)

Gender and Religious Faith Experiences of Adult Christian Exemplars.Malcolm Reid & Paul Kennedy - 2009 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 31 (1):91-114.
Open-ended survey responses from 205 Christian exemplars drawn from 37 distinct congregations within 19 Christian denominations in the Northwest and New England regions of the United States were analyzed by chi-square and multiple regression analyses to determine relationships between religious experience and gender. Results indicated that men were more likely than women to describe positions of leadership/responsibility/service as influential to their faith, and to indicate their own personal sin as a faith challenge. Women were more likely than men to describe (...)

  7. Musical movement and aesthetic metaphors.Malcolm Budd - 2003 - British Journal of Aesthetics 43 (3):209-223.
Roger Scruton's extraordinarily rich and impressive book The Aesthetics of Music has not received the attention it deserves. In this paper I take issue with one of its most striking claims, namely that the basic perceptions of music are informed by spatial concepts understood metaphorically. To evaluate this claim it is necessary to grasp Scruton's theory of metaphor, which has largely been neglected. I sketch his theory and derive from it the essence of his claim about the fundamental role of (...)

    Are People in a Persistent Vegetative State Conscious?Malcolm Horne - 2009 - Monash Bioethics Review 28 (2):1-12.
Recently, brain imaging has provided controversial evidence of persisting awareness in some people whose brains are so severely injured that consciousness is minimal or absent, but in whom prolongation of life depends on the provision of continuing medical care. The clinicians understanding of the persistent vegetative state is briefly outlined and the evidence provided by brain imaging of awareness in this condition is reviewed. Information regarding consciousness in progressive acquired dementias are considered in the context of management of these conditions. (...)

The Aesthetic Appreciation of Nature I advance a view of the aesthetic value of nature that Glenn Parsons seeks to contest. Here I attempt to show three things. The first is that his critique of my view of the aesthetic value of a natural thing is malfounded. The second is that his proposed alternative, which is intended to vindicate the claim to objectivity of certain judgements of the aesthetic value of a natural thing, is unconvincing. And the third is that, (...)

Karl Marx's Social and Political Thought: Civil society, ideology, morals, and ethics.Bob Jessop & Charlie Malcolm-Brown - 1990 - Psychology Press.
As one of the most central social and political theorists, Marx's thought has endured to become part of the fabric of modern conscience. These volumes provide students of politics and economics with immediate access to Marx's contribution to social and political thought and show how his work has been received and modified by others.

The cytoskeleton and motor proteins of human schistosomes and their roles in surface maintenance and host–parasite interactions.Malcolm K. Jones, Geoffrey N. Gobert, Lihua Zhang, Philip Sunderland & Donald P. McManus - 2004 - Bioessays 26 (7):752-765.
Schistosomes are parasitic blood flukes, responsible for significant human disease in tropical and developing nations. Here we review information on the organization of the cytoskeleton and associated motor proteins of schistosomes, with particular reference to the organization of the syncytial tegument, a unique cellular adaptation of these and other neodermatan flatworms. Extensive EST databases show that the molecular constituents of the cytoskeleton and associated molecular systems are likely to be similar to those of other eukaryotes, although there are potentially some (...)

New Zealand health care financing 'reforms' perceived in ideological context.Malcolm Brown - 1996 - Health Care Analysis 4 (4):293-308.
Health sector financing reforms that have been ongoing over the last decade in most developed countries are rooted in philosophical terms in the ideology of economic rationalism. The ideology suggests that it is possible to artificially create markets for activities in contexts where markets do not develop naturally, and that the creation of these artificial markets leads to resource allocations that are both more efficient and more equitable than historical arrangements. The application of the ideology to New Zealand's health sector (...)

  43. Kant on Natural Beauty.Malcolm Budd - 1996 - In The aesthetic appreciation of nature. Clarendon Press.
Outlines Immanuel Kant's conception of an aesthetic judgement and his classification of aesthetic judgements, and then expounds and examines Kant's various claims about aesthetic judgements of natural beauty. Kant's problematic identification of the distinctive pleasure of the beautiful is rejected; obscurities in his notion of a judgement of dependent beauty are identified; his classification of aesthetic judgements is deemed incomplete; and his claim that there is an ideal of human beauty is shown to be unconvincing. Explains what Kant means by (...)

  44. Kant on Natural Beauty and Morality.Malcolm Budd - 1996 - In The aesthetic appreciation of nature. Clarendon Press.
Examines Kant's view of the connection between a love of natural beauty and morality. Kant claims that anyone who takes an immediate interest in natural beauty can do so only in virtue of possessing at least the germ of a morally good disposition; someone who is in essence a morally good person cannot reflect on natural beauty without this reflection generating an immediate interest in natural beauty; and it is right to demand that each person takes such an interest. I (...)

  45. Kant on the Sublime in Nature.Malcolm Budd - 1996 - In The aesthetic appreciation of nature. Clarendon Press.
Explains Kant's idea of a pure aesthetic judgement of the sublime in nature and his division of the sublime into the mathematically and the dynamically sublime. Kant's account of the mathematically sublime contains numerous obscurities, some of which I highlight. I reject his leading idea that the mathematically sublime rests on a so‐called aesthetic estimation of magnitude, one that must inevitably be defeated by the infinity or limitlessness of nature or space. I also reject his accounts of the double‐aspect emotions (...)
