Revisiting the Ontological Square.Luc Schneider - 2010 - In Anthony Galton & Riichiro Mizoguchi (eds.), Proceeding of the 2010 conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems: Proceedings of the Sixth International Conference (FOIS 2010). IOS Press.
Considerations regarding predication in ordinary language as well as the ontology of relations suggest a refinement of the Ontological Square, a conceptual scheme used in many foundational ontologies and which consists of particular substrates as well as their types on the one hand and particular attributes as well as their types on the other hand. First, the distinction between particulars and universals turns out to be one of degree, since particulars are merely the least elements in the subsumption hierarchy. Second, (...)

Have gene knockouts caused evolutionary reversals in the mammalian first arch?Kathleen K. Smith & Richard A. Schneider - 1998 - Bioessays 20 (3):245-255.
Many recent gene knockout experiments cause anatomical changes to the jaw region of mice that several investigators claim are evolutionary reversals. Here we evaluate these mutant phenotypes and the assertions of atavism. We argue that following the knockout of Hoxa-2, Dlx-2, MHox, Otx2, and RAR genes, ectopic cartilages arise as secondary consequences of disruptions in normal processes of cell specification, migration, or differentiation. These disruptions cause an excess of mesenchyme to accumulate in a region through which skeletal progenitor cells usually (...)

  11. The Ratio Bias Phenomenon : Fact or Artifact ?Mathieu Lefebvre, Ferdinand Vieider & Marie-Claire Villeval - 2011 - Theory and Decision 71 (4).
The ratio bias––according to which individuals prefer to bet on probabilities expressed as a ratio of large numbers to normatively equivalent or superior probabilities expressed as a ratio of small numbers––has recently gained momentum, with researchers especially in health economics emphasizing the policy importance of the phenomenon. Although the bias has been replicated several times, some doubts remain about its economic significance. Our two experiments show that the bias disappears once order effects are excluded, and once salient and dominant incentives (...)

Language Development and Social Integration of Students with English as an Additional Language.Michael Evans, Claudia Schneider, Madeleine Arnot, Linda Fisher, Karen Forbes, Yongcan Liu & Oakleigh Welply - 2020 - Cambridge University Press.
Given the current context of the experience of migration on schools in England and Europe, and the competing policies and approaches to social integration in schools, there is a need to understand the connection between language development and social integration as a basis for promoting appropriate policies and practices. This volume explores the complex relationship between language, education and the social integration of newcomer migrant children in England, through an in-depth analysis of case studies from schools in the East of (...)

Research Ethics, Volume 18, Issue 1, Page 13-23, January 2022. School-based research presents ethical challenges, especially with respect to informed consent. The manner in which pupils and their parents respond to an invitation to participate in research is likely to depend on several factors, including the level of trust between them and the researchers. This paper describes our recruitment and consent process for a school-based eye study in Nigeria. In the course of our study, a particular governmental incident helped to (...)

Teaching the History of Philosophy in 19th-Century Germany.Ulrich Johannes Schneider - 2004 - Teaching New Histories of Philosophy:275-295.
What does it mean to do philosophy historically, and when does the legend of philosophy begin? When Hegel tried to give a logical explanation of philosophy's history, was he doing the same thing as Eduard Zeller in his account of Creek thought, or Kuno Fischer in his narrative of modern philosophy? l do not believe so, and I shall sugges t in the following that we should carefully differentiate between the different activities commonly referred to as the history of philosophy. (...)

Ethik und Politik aus interkultureller Sicht.R. A. Mall & Notker Schneider (eds.) - 1996 - BRILL.

Things of the World: Migration, Presence, and the Arts of Presencing.Ralph Cintrón & Jason Schneider - 2019 - Philosophy and Rhetoric 52 (2):115-141.
This essay argues for the value of presence as rhetorical heuristic. Beginning with the philosophical tradition, the authors establish a long-standing interest in presence or isness, understood as the thing-itself outside subjectivity. We then trace how rhetorical theorists including Aristotle, Quintilian, and Perelman have privileged isness as a baseline for true conviction, positioning rhetoric as an effort to imitate material proofs. Such views highlight the tension between presence (things of the world in their isness) and the arts of presencing (the (...)

Hinderk M. Emrich & Udo Schneider (eds.) - 2005 - New York: P. Lang.

Kyoto in Davos. Intercultural Readings of the Cassirer-Heidegger Debate.Tobias Endres, Ralf Müller & Domenico Schneider (eds.) - 2024 - Boston: BRILL.
The famous debate between Ernst Cassirer and Martin Heidegger of 1929 in Davos was set on a global stage and, yet, inherently Eurocentric. This volume explores how the hypothetical presence of the Kyoto school founder Nishida Kitarō would have overcome this limitation.

    Von den heroischen Leidenschaften.Giordano Bruno & Ferdinand Fellmann - 1996 - Meiner, F.
