Education and its borderlines. An essay about the nature of education.Herner Sæverot & Glenn-Egil Torgersen - 2013 - Phenomenology and Practice 6 (2):108-120.
This essay initiates a fundamental discussion about education’s nature and character, and raises the questions: Is education reliant on other disciplines as, for example, psychology, sociology and philosophy? Or may education be thought of independently, without being reliant on other disciplines? These questions are discussed in the light of Theodor Litt’s educational reading of Hegel’s understanding of dialectics, as it appears in the book Phenomenology of Spirit, in order to support that education has a relational and dialectic nature. In the (...)

Should Biodiversity be Useful? Scope and Limits of Ecosystem Services as an Argument for Biodiversity Conservation.Glenn Deliège & Stijn Neuteleers - 2015 - Environmental Values 24 (2):165-182.
This article examines the argument that biodiversity is crucial for well-functioning ecosystems and that such ecosystems provide important goods and services to our human societies, in short the ecosystem services argument (ESA). While the ESA can be a powerful argument for nature preservation, we argue that its dominant functionalist interpretation is confronted with three significant problems. First, the ESA seems unable to preserve the nature it claims to preserve. Second, the ESA cannot explain why those caring about nature want to (...)

Obligation or Desire: Variation in Motivation for Compliance With COVID-19 Public Health Guidance.Ting Ai, Glenn Adams & Xian Zhao - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Why do people comply with coronavirus disease 2019 public health guidance? This study considers cultural-psychological foundations of variation in beliefs about motivations for such compliance. Specifically, we focused on beliefs about two sources of prosocial motivation: desire to protect others and obligation to society. Across two studies, we observed that the relative emphasis on the desire to protect others as an explanation for compliance was greater in the United States settings associated with cultural ecologies of abstracted independence than in Chinese (...)

Nobody in this debate questions the point that neuroeconomics remains full of potential, and little else as yet. If so, that really is progress of sorts. I was getting afraid that we would have to open nominations for the Captain Ahab Award for obsessive work on the promotion of neuroeconomics.

    «Pining for the Wild».Glenn Deliège - 2007 - Ethical Perspectives 14 (4):405-429.
In this paper, I critically assess the position the Dutch environmental- philosopher Martin Drenthen develops on the philosophical import of the “wilderness-concept,” especially with regards to the practical implications he draws from it for nature-preservation-practices.By situating Drenthen’s work in the context of the Dutch debate on which kind of nature should serve as the basis for Dutch preservationist policies, I typify Drenthen’s position as inhering in the tension between an “engaged” environmental philosophy that tries to give a substantive account of (...)

Where are the Boys? Where are the Men? A Case Study from Cambodia.Glenn Michael Miles - 2016 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 33 (3):185-196.
This paper examines the vulnerability of boys and young men to trafficking and sexual abuse/exploitation globally as an often-hidden problem. Exploration of the story of Joseph in Genesis and how he was trafficked to Egypt by his brothers and then sexually harassed by Potiphar’s wife will challenge a number of assumptions about vulnerability. The research that has been conducted in Cambodia and the Asia region demonstrates that boys and young men are indeed vulnerable and require our attention. Awareness and response (...)

Why Church History Matters in Seminary and Church: Then (1812) and Now (2012).Glenn T. Miller - 2012 - Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology 66 (4):396-408.
This article highlights three moments in the teaching of Church History in American Protestant seminaries: the early 19th century, the early 20th century, and the present. In each, the interaction between Church History and the pastoral needs of the church is highlighted.

    Ideas and Animals: The Hard Problem of Leibnizian Metaphysics.Glenn A. Hartz & Catherine Wilson - 2005 - Studia Leibnitiana 37 (1):1 - 19.

The Politics of the Soul: Eric Voegelin on Religious Experience.Glenn Hughes (ed.) - 1998 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
The Politics of the Soul: Eric Voegelin on Religious Experience includes eight essays examining one of the most profound studies of religious experience to appear in the last century: that of the political philosopher Eric Voegelin. Voegelin is increasingly recognized as a political theorist of exceptional scope and erudition and the most important philosopher of his time since Toynbee, and his treatment of religious experience is a crucial part of his overall analysis of existence and history. This collection of essays (...)

  25. How Noam Chomsky is discussed.Glenn Greenwald - unknown
One very common tactic for enforcing political orthodoxies is to malign the character, "style" and even mental health of those who challenge them. The most extreme version of this was an old Soviet favorite: to declare political dissidents mentally ill and put them in hospitals. In the US, those who take even the tiniest steps outside of political convention are instantly decreed "crazy", as happened to the 2002 anti-war version of Howard Dean and the current iteration of Ron Paul (in (...)

Doing it both ways – experimental practice and heuristic context.Glenn W. Harrison & E. Elisabet Rutström - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (3):413-414.
Psychologists can learn from the procedural conventions of experimental economics. But the rationale for those conventions must be examined and understood lest they become constraints. Field referents and the choice of heuristic, matter for behavior. This theme unites the fields of experimental psychology and experimental economics by the simple fact that the object of study in both cases is the same.

Is the evidence for hyperbolic discounting in humans just an experimental artefact?Glenn W. Harrison & Morten Igel Lau - 2005 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 28 (5):657-657.
We question the behavioral premise underlying Ainslie's claims about hyperbolic discounting theory. The alleged evidence for humans can be easily explained as an artefact of experimental procedures that do not control for the credibility of payment over different time horizons. In appropriately controlled and financially motivated settings, human behavior is consistent with conventional exponential preferences.

    Platonic Piety. [REVIEW]Glenn Lesses - 1991 - Review of Metaphysics 45 (1):138-141.
Commentators too often have failed to locate Plato's epistemology in a historically sensitive interpretation. Michael Morgan's Platonic Piety makes this charge and seeks to address it by incorporating Plato's attitude toward Greek religion in his reading of Plato's middle dialogues. In particular, he examines the consequences of "human aspiration to divine status". Morgan has two main objectives. First, he wishes to consider how religious assumptions affect Plato's treatment of political, metaphysical, and especially epistemological issues from the Meno to the Phaedrus. (...)
