Virtual morality: transitioning from moral judgment to moral action?Kathryn B. Francis, Charles Howard, Ian S. Howard, Michaela Gummerum, Giorgio Ganis, Grace Anderson & Sylvia Terbeck - unknown
The nature of moral action versus moral judgment has been extensively debated in numerous disciplines. We introduce Virtual Reality (VR) moral paradigms examining the action individuals take in a high emotionally arousing, direct action-focused, moral scenario. In two studies involving qualitatively different populations, we found a greater endorsement of utilitarian responses–killing one in order to save many others–when action was required in moral virtual dilemmas compared to their judgment counterparts. Heart rate in virtual moral dilemmas was significantly increased when compared (...)

On the Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time: The Situationist International, 1957-1972.Elisabeth Sussman, Peter Wollen, Greil Marcus, Mark Francis, Tom Levin, Mirella Bandini & Troels Anderson - 1989 - MIT Press (MA).
These photographs, essays, drawings, and original texts document the rich agit-art legacy of the Situationist International, a group of European artists and writers who emerged from such avant-garde movements as COBRA, Lettrisme, and the Imaginary Bauhaus and from the breakup of surrealism to launch a strategy of art as cultural critique.

Gnosticismo: Um resgate conceitual motivado pela exortação apostólica gaudete et exsultate.Anderson Frezzato - 2019 - Revista de Teologia 12 (22):54-62.
The objective of this article is to present research results on the Gnosticism, motivated by Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Gaudate et Exsultate. Gnosticism appears characterized as a knowledge system that aims to attain true gnosis, that is, true knowledge. The origins of the gnostic movement are not easy to be identified, but their vestiges can be already found in the philosophy of Plato, in the Jewish literature and in the apocryphal writings of the primitive Christianity. Fought as heresy, especially (...)

Nowhere to run, rabbit: the cold-war calculus of disease ecology.Warwick Anderson - 2017 - History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences 39 (2):13.
During the cold war, Frank Fenner and Francis Ratcliffe studied mathematically the coevolution of host resistance and parasite virulence when myxomatosis was unleashed on Australia’s rabbit population. Later, Robert May called Fenner the “real hero” of disease ecology for his mathematical modeling of the epidemic. While Ratcliffe came from a tradition of animal ecology, Fenner developed an ecological orientation in World War II through his work on malaria control —that is, through studies of tropical medicine. This makes Fenner at (...)

  39. Francis Bacon: His Career and His Thought. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1962 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (1):163-163.
The major portion of the book is devoted to an extensive treatment of Bacon's political and legal career. Against this background, Anderson traces the emergence of Bacon's inductive method, from his rejection of Peripatetic principles in the Advancement of Learning to the triumph of the method with the Royal Society. The conspicuous absence of footnotes and bibliography detracts from this otherwise thorough and sympathetic study of Bacon.--D. P. B.

  42. The epistemology of democracy.Elizabeth Anderson - 2006 - Episteme 3 (1-2):8-22.
Th is paper investigates the epistemic powers of democratic institutions through an assessment of three epistemic models of democracy : the Condorcet Jury Th eorem, the Diversity Trumps Ability Th eorem, and Dewey's experimentalist model. Dewey's model is superior to the others in its ability to model the epistemic functions of three constitutive features of democracy : the epistemic diversity of participants, the interaction of voting with discussion, and feedback mechanisms such as periodic elections and protests. It views democracy as (...)

  43. Uses of value judgments in science: A general argument, with lessons from a case study of feminist research on divorce.Elizabeth Anderson - 2004 - Hypatia 19 (1):1-24.
: The underdetermination argument establishes that scientists may use political values to guide inquiry, without providing criteria for distinguishing legitimate from illegitimate guidance. This paper supplies such criteria. Analysis of the confused arguments against value-laden science reveals the fundamental criterion of illegitimate guidance: when value judgments operate to drive inquiry to a predetermined conclusion. A case study of feminist research on divorce reveals numerous legitimate ways that values can guide science without violating this standard.

The nature of cognition is being re-considered. Instead of emphasizing formal operations on abstract symbols, the new approach foregrounds the fact that cognition is, rather, a situated activity, and suggests that thinking beings ought therefore be considered first and foremost as acting beings. The essay reviews recent work in Embodied Cognition, provides a concise guide to its principles, attitudes and goals, and identifies the physical grounding project as its central research focus.

In this article, we discuss Beauchamp and Childress’s treatment of the issue of moral status. In particular, we introduce the five different perspectives on moral status that Beauchamp and Childress consider in Principles of Biomedical Ethics and explain their alternative to those perspectives, raise some critical questions about their approach, and offer a different way to think about one of the five theories of moral status that is more in line with what we believe some of its leading advocates affirm.
