Patient Decision Aids: A Case for Certification at the National Level in the United States.Glyn Elwyn, John W. Williams, Robert J. Volk, Dawn Stacey, Shannon Brownlee & Urbashi Poddar - 2015 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 26 (4):306-311.
Patient decision aids enable patients to be better informed about the potential benefits and harms of their healthcare options. Certification of patient decision aids at the national level in the United States is a critical step towards responsible governance—primarily as a quality measure that increases patients’ safety, as mandated in the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Certification would provide a verification process to identify conflicts of interest that may otherwise bias the scientific evidence presented in decision aids. (...)

Early steps in plastid evolution: current ideas and controversies.Andrzej Bodył, Paweł Mackiewicz & John W. Stiller - 2009 - Bioessays 31 (11):1219-1232.
Some nuclear‐encoded proteins are imported into higher plant plastids via the endomembrane (EM) system. Compared with multi‐protein Toc and Tic translocons required for most plastid protein import, the relatively uncomplicated nature of EM trafficking led to suggestions that it was the original transport mechanism for nuclear‐encoded endosymbiont proteins, and critical for the early stages of plastid evolution. Its apparent simplicity disappears, however, when EM transport is considered in light of selective constraints likely encountered during the conversion of stable endosymbionts into (...)

Reason and Rationality in Health and Human Services Delivery.John T. Pardeck, Charles F. Longino & John W. Murphy - 1998 - Psychology Press.
Reason and Rationality in Health and Human Services Delivery is the first book to discuss the topic of decisionmaking and services from a multidisciplinary approach. It uses theory and social considerations, not just technology, as a basis for improved services. Health and human service students and professionals will learn how to form rational and reasonable decisions that take their clients'cultural backgrounds into consideration when identifying an illness or appropriating any kind of intervention. With a particular emphasis on theories, models, organizational (...)

    John Henry Muirhead (Routledge Revivals): Reflections.John W. Harvey - 2012 - Routledge.
First published in 1942, Reflections documents the life of John Henry Muirhead and the philosophical age that he observed. The first part of the volume derives from Muirhead’s own autobiographical narrative, left unfinished when he died in May 1940. The second part features two final chapters written by John W. Harvey that comprehensively record the final stages of Muirhead’s life. Harvey’s chapters incorporate Muirhead’s unfinished final years of commentary and begin at the man’s retirement from Birmingham Chair in (...)

The Relation of Art to Nature.John W. Beatty & Bruce Rogers - 2016 - Createspace Independent Publishing Platform.
In his very convincing and lucid treatise on the fundamental principles of art, John W. Beatty gives us a most absorbing theme to follow-the relation of art to nature, as expressed in their own words by artists themselves, of different times and creeds; with, too, the opinions of philosophers and men of letters.

Is Kant’s Ethics Overly Demanding?John W. Lango - 1998 - The Paideia Archive: Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy 44:127-132.
Is Kant’s "Formula of the End in Itself" overly demanding? In addressing this question, I sketch a conception of co-obligation, that is, a sort of moral requirement that holds, not of persons distributively, but of persons collectively. I then raise a problem of devolution: How does a co-obligation for all persons devolve upon me? For instance, given that we must maximize happiness, it does not seem to follow that I must always act so as to maximize happiness. In partial answer (...)

    The Computerization of Human Service Agencies: A Critical Appraisal.John W. Murphy & John T. Pardeck - 1991 - Praeger.
This work serves as an introduction to both the theoretical and practical aspects of using computers to improve the delivery of social services. Though many practitioners believe that computerization dehumanizes clients and should be avoided, John Murphy and John Pardeck demonstrate how, through a holistic approach to computer use, this problem, and others like it, can be averted. By providing practitioners the opportunity to sharpen their conceptual skills in computer technology, this book promotes a rational understanding of the (...)

Dower observes mounting tension in U.S.-Japan relations. He identifies two factors as contributing to mutual fear: differences in capitalism on national and international levels, and stereotypical perceptions based on racial phobias.

The thought of G.W.F. Hegel while he is one of the most influential philosophers of all time is difficult to interpret or encapsulate, in part due to his use of language and in part due to the large number of Hegelian successors who have expanded upon his work. For this reason, the Historical Dictionary of Hegelian Philosophy is an extraordinarily useful tool to understand the work and environment of Hegel himself, along with the range of his followers' thought.

Words of Wisdom: A Philosophical Dictionary for the Perennial Tradition.John W. Carlson - 2012 - University of Notre Dame Press.
Like their predecessors throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have emphasized the importance of philosophy in the Catholic intellectual tradition. In his encyclical _Fides et ratio _, John Paul II called on philosophers “to have the courage to recover, in the flow of an enduringly valid philosophical tradition, the range of authentic wisdom and truth.” Where the late pope spoke of an “enduringly valid tradition,” Jacques Maritain and other Thomists often (...)
