How can we make businesspeople more concerned about the truth of the information they spread or allow to circulate? In this age of ‘fake news’, ‘business bullshit’ and ‘post-truth,’ the issue is of the utmost importance, especially for business trustworthiness in the internet economy. The issue is related to a kind of epistemic responsibility, that consists in accounting for one’s own epistemic wrongdoings, such as making a third party believe something false. Despite growing interest in epistemic misbehavior in the literature (...) of business ethics, the question of epistemic responsibility has been neglected. The aim of this paper is therefore to address this gap, by proposing a notion of epistemic responsibility for business, that may help regulate undesirable epistemic behavior, such as the spreading of false information. To define this notion of epistemic responsibility, I have introduced the concept of epistemic fault. Being epistemically responsible consists in being disposed to account for alleged epistemic faults. This notion of epistemic fault relies on a theoretical framework which combines a typology of eight ‘epistemic values’, a normative stance regarding these values, and a dispositional approach to epistemic virtues and vices. I use this theoretical framework to integrate the various accounts of epistemic virtues and vices found in the literature into a single explanatory scheme. Combined with the notion of epistemic responsibility itself, such an integrative framework should facilitate the practical application of an operational epistemic ethics in business, i.e., the development of virtuous epistemic practices. Starting with a review of research on love as an emotion, with an emphasis on romantic love, it is argued that despite strong emotional correlates evidence is lacking to conclude that love would meet the criteria of basic emotions. Theoretical developments are proposed where love is conceived of as a combination of an objectless drive, a desire for love, and a mythical and scripted representation that offers the possibility of labeling the current core affect. I argue that the basic motive (...) for love is not so much the partner’s personal attributes, but rather the benefits of the transformative power of being in love. (shrink)

Les Annales ont tracé, depuis leurs débuts dans les années 1930, des frontières avec la sociologie. L’étude de trois moments majeurs (l’ère des fondateurs, le moment Braudel et la décennie 1980) permet de saisir le travail d ‘horographie comme un enjeu sans cesse actualisé dans les rapports de force institutionnels et épistémologiques. L’identité collective des Annales, émergeant dans ces débats de délimitation avec la sociologie, s’appuie sur un réseau de valeurs et de références continuellement ajusté.

The necessity of epistemological theorisation for management science is questionable. However, epistemology can be useful if the following distinction between three kinds of epistemology, usually overlooked, is taken into account: epistemology as a structured academic discipline, epistemology as an intellectual exercise produced outside academic epistemology, and finally the epistemology specific to each researcher. When this distinction is not made, epistemology can become counterproductive and impede scientific work.

Social entrepreneurship is a precarious activity that must always strike a delicate balance between commercial principles and social concerns. There is no shortage of discussion concerning the possible solutions that could help to maintain this balance, and social entrepreneurs are striving to reconcile conflicting aims on a daily basis, but the economic roots of this precariousness remain. Based on an analysis of these root causes, we propose a new radical approach to this precariousness, “radical” in the etymological sense of the (...) term “root”. We start by identifying what determines the dilemma that lies at the heart of the precariousness of social entrepreneurship in present-day economic institutions. This enables us to identify the institutional conditions that might allow us to overcome it. The first condition is linked to the conservation of money in individual trade, which might be alleviated. To determine the second condition, we introduce the notion of the endogeneity of the institutional solutions to the dilemma. The lesser the involvement of the actors concerned by its formulation, the less endogenous is the solution. On this basis, we suggest institutional reforms that could prompt entrepreneurs to organize themselves in support of the actions of the most socially oriented entrepreneurs, thus safeguarding their sustainability. En centrant mes analyses sur La voix et le phénomène et plus particulièrement sur son chapitre V, « Le signe et le clin d’œil », qui déconstruit la temporalité husserlienne du Présent-Vivant, j’essaie de montrer comment Derrida parvient enfin à faire de l’intentionnalité donatrice du sens et productrice d’une représentation idéale, une (...) compulsion de répétition aveugle et mécanique. This paper addresses two disciplinary expansion trends in social sciences: in sociology, by denying the distinction between human and non-human; in archaeology, relying on the objet-mémoire concept, which associates the ideas of social interaction and memory processes. We discuss them from an ethnographic study of the ordinary containers in a biology laboratory. The signs, drawn or engraved on their surface, are a proxy for a joint analysis of artifacts, textuality, institutionalization processes, and social stratification. Rather than such disciplinary expansions, we (...) argue in favor of an ethnography based on the “cultural technology” trend. ---------------------- Cet article identifie deux programmes d’extension disciplinaire en sciences sociales, fondés sur une redéfinition du statut accordé aux objets : en sociologie, en niant la distinction entre humain et non‑humain ; en archéologie, en introduisant le concept d’« objet‑mémoire », qui intègre l’interaction sociale et les processus mémoriels. Leur discussion est menée à partir d’une ethnographie des contenants usuels d’un laboratoire de biologie. Les marques apposées à leurs surfaces permettent l’analyse conjointe des ensembles d’artefacts, de leur textualité, des processus d’institutionnalisation et de la stratification sociale du laboratoire. This article explores the plurivocality of temporalities that is at work in contemporary management. The aim is to understand the relationship that a century-old industrial company has with temporality. Based on a longitudinal case study and a series of interviews conducted within the family business Fleury Michon, the article identifies the discursive mobilizations of different temporalities specific to contemporary capitalism. The logics of the long term are required as constitutive elements of the company. In a presentist regime, these temporalities interact, (...) clash and sometimes oppose each other. One of the challenges of management is to produce both a possible conciliation of these temporalities and an euphemization of the power relations that they cannot conceal. (shrink)

The Strategic Choice Approach (SCA) is a method meant to deal with operational decision in a strategic way and to manage different sources of uncertainty in decision-making processes. The paper describes how SCA can deal with the future in the specific realm of urban planning in current cities, which represents a typical example of Wicked Problem, taking into account the three different levels of uncertainties that the method aims to manage (Uncertainties about the working Environment, UE; Uncertainties about Related decisions, (...) UR; Uncertainties about guiding Values, UV). We argue that these three types of uncertainties are referred to the ‘ordinary’ problems of modern and contemporary cities. The project of an architectural/urban transformation has to do with this kind uncertainties and implications – in overcoming a series of approvals of different institutional order – and, with this purpose, takes the form of a contract. Instead, this categorisation doesn’t conceive some new and uncertain challenges of future cities, around climate change, infrastructural disruption, insecurity, pandemics, at local and global scales, that are currently under debate in the cities. In this study we suggest that this character of uniqueness can imply the exploration of a new category of uncertainty in the SCA scheme, the ‘uncertainty about disruptive events (UD)’, a type of catastrophic or just unknown in their effects. First of all, we define the PSMs (Problem Structuring Methods) as methods of structuring the «wicked problems». Secondly, we examine the SCA as «a strategic choice process through time», taking into account the three different levels of uncertainty that the method intends to manage. (shrink)

Derrida est-il aujourd'hui un philosophe qui peut nous aider à penser ce qui nous arrive? Résolument oui. La pensée de Derrida est toujours d'une brûlante actualité à condition de savoir la lire. Cet essai l'explicite en interrogeant à travers "l'excès de vie", cet étrange concept de "spectre" qui fait de la philosophie derridienne une philosophie inouïe, pour ne pas dire une philosophie de l'inouï. Comment penser le spectre? Voici un concept peu philosophique qui travaille de manière absolument inédite toute la (...) philosophie derridienne. La philosophie de Derrida est un "corps spectral" dont cet essai reconstitue les articulations. En montrant que la déconstruction peut être pensée comme le résultat de la jonction improbable de l'intentionnalité husserlienne (ou du Présent-Vivant) et de la compulsion de répétition freudienne, il laisse ressurgir un survivant qui bien loin de porter la mort, excède la vie présente pour se projeter vers l'à venir. De manière tout à fait inattendue, une telle approche per- - met tout d'abord de comprendre comment la philosophie derridienne s'inscrit dans la tradition philosophique tout en la déconstruisant, pour l'ouvrir sur son dehors. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:IntroductionAu xive siècle, Walter Burley s'est rendu célèbre par les polémiques qu'il a conduites contre la position théologique de Guillaume d'Ockham sur la quantité et sur ses conceptions réductionnistes en philosophie naturelle du mouvement et du lieu, au point de lui avoir consacré en 1335, presque trente ans après ses premiers commentaires aristotéliciens, une réécriture d'un certain nombre de passages de ses œuvres physiques et logiques. Dans sa définition (...) du lieu, Ockham refuse que le terme d'ultimum appartenant au corps contenant, ne soit pas le corps contenant lui-même. L'objet de cette étude est de comparer les études sur le lieu de Walter Burley avant et après 1320. Nous montrerons tout d'abord qu'avant 1320, Burley est marqué par la position averroïste sur le lieu et rejette la définition aristotélicienne des Catégories. Nous constaterons alors qu'après cette date, Burley consacre au lieu une étude beaucoup plus détaillée et développée qui doit prouver contre Ockham que le lieu n'est ni un corps ni une surface. Nous terminerons cette analyse en définissant le critère principal de distinction entre les deux époques d'écriture sur le lieu, l'intérêt accru de Burley pour les indivisibles et la structure du continu après 1320.La Reception Aristotelicienne et Averroïste du Lieu Chez BurleyAristote présente deux définitions contradictoires du lieu. Dans les Catégories, il cite le lieu dans la liste des quantités continues telles que la ligne, la surface, le corps et même le temps. Dans son livre iv de la Physique, le lieu est la limite du corps contenant. Dans le premier cas, le lieu est vu comme une capacité réceptive d'un corps et ses parties, dont la caractéristique est d'occuper un lieu. Dans le deuxième cas, Aristote nie que les parties du corps distinctes du corps, occuperaient un lieu par elles-mêmes. De plus, les parties d'un corps continu ne correspondent pas à la nature des parties qui pourraient être dans un lieu, c'est-à-dire des parties strictement séparées de ce qui fait leur contour. Dans la première définition du lieu comme espèce de la quantité, le lieu possède l'extension tridimensionnelle du corps logé. Cette interprétation est remise en cause dans la Physique. La définition aristotélicienne du lieu d'un corps est finalement basée sur quatre paramètres: le lieu n'est pas une partie du corps logé mais il a une capacité de contenance de ce corps, le lieu est aux justes dimensions du corps logé, le lieu est séparable du corps logé puisque ce dernier peut changer de lieu, le lieu propre se distingue du haut et du bas. Dans l'étude aristotélicienne sur la nature du lieu, sont envisagées quatre possibilités dont seule la dernière est véritablement retenue, puisqu'elle remplit les quatre conditions exposées plus haut dans sa définition: il s'agit de la surface du corps contenant. This article serves as an introduction to the special issue discussing the usefulness of philosophy in managerial practice. We present the papers included in this special issue and identify keynote directions for further research. The initial intention of the call for papers was to promote this topic on research agendas by offering a platform for discussing if, why, and how philosophy can complement and enhance management practice. Now that this special issue has been published, we see a broader significance: the (...) arguments explored here are a starting point for more in-depth studies of the connections that can occur between specific philosophical concepts, theories, methods on the one hand, and concrete managerial practices on the other. A growing body of research informs us that an effective, efficient fight against chronic American poverty, producing benefits far exceeding costs, is possible. It begins by protecting children from developmental risks. This book describes those risks, along with the programs and policies we know protect children and families. A policy framework for the pursuit of an intrepid new goal – the purposeful protection of America’s most vulnerable children on a large scale – would end chronic poverty as we know it.

We discuss a recent approach to investigating cognitive control, which has the potential to deal with some of the challenges inherent in this endeavour. In a model-based approach, the researcher defines a formal, computational model that performs the task at hand and whose performance matches that of a research participant. The internal variables in such a model might then be taken as proxies for latent variables computed in the brain. We discuss the potential advantages of such an approach for the (...) study of the neural underpinnings of cognitive control and its pitfalls, and we make explicit the assumptions underlying the interpretation of data obtained using this approach. Foucault's analysis of an aesthetics of existence is presented as an instrument to practice ethical thought without the presupposition of an autonomous subject. The implications of Foucault's aesthetics of existence for ethical thought are traced to the work of Nietzsche. In Foucault's work, experiences of oneself are not a given, but are constituted in power relations and true-and-false games. In the interplay of truths and power relations, the individual constitutes a certain relationship to him- or herself. Foucault designated the relation (...) to oneself and one's existence as the main area of ethical concern and the most important field where aesthetic values are to be applied. In his aesthetics of existence, he invited the individual to problematize the relationship with the self and by using 'self-techniques' to transform it into a work of art. La sociologie historique des sciences et des techniques est, davantage qu'une discipline, une pratique et une mise en oeuvre d'un ensemble varié de méthodes historiques et sociologiques croisées. Cet ouvrage propose donc une approche méthodologique et empirique de ce segment de recherche aux riches potentialités. Deux problématiques structurent le livre. Il s'agit tout d'abord d'enquêter sur la production et la circulation des concepts dans des contextes variés (marxisme, épistémè foucaldienne). Ensuite, parce que la sociologie historique des sciences et des techniques (...) offre une potentialité d'expressions théoriques larges, l'ouvrage avance la proposition d'une conceptualisation du rapport entre savoir et pouvoir autour d'un régime régulatoire des sciences et des techniques. Le cadrage par le droit, la professionnalisation de certaines activités savantes, les effets de la bureaucratisation et la mobilisation de valeurs spécifiques délimitent un ensemble de pratiques scientifiques et techniques déployé par et pour l'État. Given certain standard assumptions-that particular sentences are meaningful, for example, and do genuinely self-attribute their own falsity-the paradoxes appear to show intriguing patterns of generally unstable semantic behavior. In what follows we want to concentrate on those patterns themselves: the pattern of the Liar, for example, which if assumed either true or false appears to oscillate endlessly between truth and falsehood.

The effective implementation of regulation in organizations is an ongoing concern for both research and practice, in order to avoid deviant behavior and its consequences. However, the way compliance with regulations is actually enacted or “performed” within organizations instead of merely executed, remains largely under-characterized. Evidence from an ethnographic study in the compliance unit of a French investment bank allows us to develop a detailed practice approach to how regulation is actually implemented in firms. We characterize the work accomplished by (...) compliance analysts who are in fact, “curving” the script of regulation within what we conceptualize as a “comfort zone”. Beyond agency, ethics appears as a key element in linking the “letter of the law”, which serves as a referential anchor to guide action, with the complex nature of specific situations. We analyze the way individuals and compliance teams cope with, interpret, struggle and in fine, perform regulation within this comfort zone. A particular interest is thus given to the work of embedded ethics in this process, as an enabler to partly recouple compliance with the regulated activity. We find that blind execution is not only impossible, but also devoid of meaning both from regulatory, risk management, and business perspectives in organizations. We highlight and characterize a hermeneutic dimension to this work, essential to effectively perform regulation in complex environments, and we suggest some directions for further research. (shrink)

The commentaries by Cacioppo and Cacioppo, Jankowiak, Marazziti, and Aron and Aron admirably illustrate the multifaceted nature of love and the difficulty of bringing together such diverse perspectives. Rising love is still far from being the subject of true experimental study since the experimenter often only observes the consequences thereof, and attempts to reconstitute in hindsight the circumstances of its onset.

Although expressions of facial emotion hold a special status in attention relative to other complex objects, whether they summon our attention automatically and against our intentions remains a debated issue. Studies supporting the strong view that attentional capture by facial expressions of emotion is entirely automatic reported that a unique emotional face distractor interfered with search for a target that was also unique on a different dimension. Participants could therefore search for the odd-one out face to locate the target and (...) attentional capture by irrelevant emotional faces might be contingent on the adoption of an implicit set for singletons. Here, confirming this hypothesis, an irrelevant emotional face captured attention when the target was the unique face with a discrepant orientation, both when this orientation was unpredictable and when it remained constant. By contrast, no such capture was observed when the target could not be found by monitoring displays for a discrepant face and participants had to search for a face with a specific orientation. Our findings show that attentional capture by emotional faces is not purely stimulus driven and thereby resolve the apparent inconsistency that prevails in the literature on the automaticity of attentional capture by emotional faces. Daydreaming appears to have a complex relationship with life satisfaction and happiness. Here we demonstrate that the facets of daydreaming that predict life satisfaction differ between men and women , that the content of daydreams tends to be social others , and that who we daydream about influences the relation between daydreaming and happiness variables like life satisfaction, loneliness, and perceived social support . Specifically, daydreaming about people not close to us predicts more loneliness and less perceived social support, whereas (...) daydreaming about close others predicts greater life satisfaction. Importantly, these patterns hold even when actual social network depth and breadth are statistically controlled, although these associations tend to be small in magnitude. Individual differences and the content of daydreams are thus important to consider when examining how happiness relates to spontaneous thoughts. (shrink)

There is currently no consensus regarding what measures are most valid to demonstrate perceptual processing without awareness. Likewise, whether conscious perception and unconscious processing rely on independent mechanisms or lie on a continuum remains a matter of debate. Here, we addressed these issues by comparing the time courses of subjective reports, objective discrimination performance and response priming during meta-contrast masking, under similar attentional demands. We found these to be strikingly similar, suggesting that conscious perception and unconscious processing cannot be dissociated (...) by their time course. Our results also demonstrate that unconscious processing, indexed by response priming, occurs, and that objective discrimination performance indexes the same conscious processes as subjective visibility reports. Finally, our results underscore the role of attention by showing that how much attention the stimulus receives relative to the mask, rather than whether processing is measured by conscious discrimination or by priming, determines the time course of meta-contrast masking.
