Present science policy discourse is focused on a broad concept of “techno-science” and emphasizes practical economic goals and gains. At the same time scientists are worried about the freedom of research and the autonomy of science. Half a century ago the difference between basic and applied science was widely taken for granted and autonomy was a value in high esteem. Most recent accounts of the history of science policy start abruptly from World War II, emphasize the Cold War context, and (...) neglect the pioneering role of the Soviet Union in forming todays “big science.” This paper claims that a closer look into the intellectual heritage from the early twentieth century will be helpful in navigating present issues of science policy. This paper describes the historical background and early formation of Wilhelm Johannsen's distinction between genotype and phenotype. It is argued that contrary to a widely accepted interpretation his concepts referred primarily to properties of individual organisms and not to statistical averages. Johannsen's concept of genotype was derived from the idea of species in the tradition of biological systematics from Linnaeus to de Vries: An individual belonged to a group - species, subspecies, elementary species - by representing a certain underlying type. (...) Johannsen sharpened this idea theoretically in the light of recent biological discoveries, not least those of cytology. He tested and confirmed it experimentally combining the methods of biometry, as developed by Francis Galton, with the individual selection method and pedigree analysis, as developed for instance by Louis Vilmorin. The term "genotype" was introduced in W. Johannsen's 1909 treatise, but the idea of a stable underlying biological "type" distinct from observable properties was the core idea of his classical bean selection experiment published 6 years earlier. The individual ontological foundation of population analysis was a self-evident presupposition in Johannsen's studies of heredity in populations from their start in the early 1890s till his death in 1927. The claim that there was a "substantial but cautious modification of Johannsen's phenotype-genotype distinction" from a statistical to an individual ontological perspective derives from a misreading of the 1903 and 1909 texts. The immediate purpose of this paper is to correct this reading of the 1903 monograph by showing how its problems and results grow out of Johannsen's earlier work in heredity and plant breeding. Johannsen presented his famous selection experiment as the culmination of a line of criticism of orthodox Darwinism by William Bateson, Hugo de Vries, and others. They had argued that evolution is based on stepwise rather than continuous change in heredity. Johannsen's paradigmatic experiment showed how stepwise variation in heredity could be operationally distinguished from the observable, continuous morphological variation. To test Galton's law of partial regression, Johannsen deliberately chose pure lines of self-fertilizing plants, a pure line being the descendants in successive generations of one single individual. Such a population could be assumed to be highly homogeneous with respect to hereditary type, and Johannsen found that selection produced no change in this type. Galton, he explained, had experimented with populations composed of a number of stable hereditary types. This paper demonstrates that L'Étranger , Camus's famous novel about an outsider, had by as early as 1946 become just as much of an 'insider' in terms of its affiliation to the Parisian literary tradition. More than an insider simply by virtue of its contemporary place in the French canon, then, the novel is also intertextually bound to a tradition of oxymoronic poetics dating back to Charles Baudelaire's Paris Spleen ( Les Petits poèmes en prose ). I shall examine the (...) way in which L'Étranger performs its prose poetics, thereby establishing it as exemplary of a Parisian model of modernity. Additionally, the famous scene on the beach will be considered as a liminal space and as a literary translation of Paris into the desert, which, once a joke for Paris's relationship to provincial France, became after the Second World War a new allegory for the capital's self-alterity. Throughout the history of genetics, the concept of the gene has been a hot topic. Theories of the gene as a coherent structured particle, a large molecule, or part of such molecule, were prominent from the 1920s until well after the discovery of DNA structure and its function in the production of proteins in the 1950s and 1960s. As knowledge of the material basis of heredity advanced, new and more sophisticated definitions were proposed (see, for example, Gerstein et al. 2007; (...) Müller-Wille and Rheinberger 2012). But rapid growth of knowledge about the molecular basis of biological heredity and individual development during the last half-century has made the idea of a particulate “gene” more and more elusive. I call an experiment “crucial” when it makes possible a decisive choice between conflicting hypotheses. Joharmsen's selection for size and weight within pure lines of beans played a central role in the controversy over continuity or discontinuity in hereditary change, often known as the Biometrician-Mendelian controversy. The “crucial” effect of this experiment was not an instantaneous event, but an extended process of repeating similar experiments and discussing possible objections. It took years before Johannsen's claim about the genetic stability of pure (...) lines was accepted as conclusively demonstrated by the community of geneticists. The paper also argues that crucial experiments thus interpreted contradict certain ideas about the underdetermination of theories by facts and the theory-ladenness of facts which have been influential in recent history and sociology of science. The acceptance of stability in the pure lines did not rest on prior preference for continuity or discontinuity. And this fact permitted a final choice between the two theories. When such choice is characterized as “decisive” or “final”, this is not meant in an absolute philosophical sense. What we achive in these cases is highly reliable empirical knowledge. The philosophical possibility of drawing (almost) any conclusion in doubt should be distinguished from reasonable doubt in empirical science. (shrink)

Problems are raised with the global workspace hypothesis of consciousness, for example about exactly how global the workspace needs to be for consciousness to suddenly be present. Problems are also raised with Carruthers's version that excludes conceptual representations, and in which phenomenal consciousness can be reduced to physical processes, with instead a different levels of explanation approach to the relation between the brain and the mind advocated. A different theory of phenomenal consciousness is described, in which there is a particular (...) computational system involved in which Higher Order Syntactic Thoughts are used to perform credit assignment on first order thoughts of multiple step plans to correct them by manipulating symbols in a syntactic type of working memory. This provides a good evolutionary reason for the evolution of this kind of computational module, with which, it is proposed, phenomenal consciousness is associated. Some advantages of this HOST approach to phenomenal consciousness are then described with reference not only to the global workspace approach, but also to Higher Order Thought theories. It is hypothesized that the HOST system which requires the ability to manipulate first order symbols in working memory might utilize parts of the prefrontal cortex implicated in working memory, and especially the left inferior frontal gyrus, which is involved in language and probably syntactical processing. Overall, the approach advocated is to identify the computations that are linked to consciousness, and to analyze the neural bases of those computations. [copyright: Copyright © 2020 Rolls.]. There are many advantages to defining emotions as states elicited by reinforcers, with the states having a set of different functions. This approach leads towards an understanding of the nature of emotion, of its evolutionary adaptive value, and of many principles of brain design. It also leads towards a foundation for many of the processes that underlie evolutionary psychology and behavioral ecology. It is shown that recent as well as previous evidence implicates the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex in positive as (...) well as negative emotions. The issue of why emotional states feel like something is part of the much larger problem of phenomenal consciousness. It is argued that thinking about one's own thoughts would have adaptive value by enabling first order linguistic thoughts to be corrected. It is suggested that reflecting on and correcting one's own thoughts and plans would feel like something, and that phenomenal consciousness may occur when this type of monitoring process is taking place. Zhores Medvedev and Mark Popovsky have both drawn attention to the positive response on the part of the scientific community to the early work of Lysenko on the phasic development of plants. This aspect of the Lysenko Affair is explored more fully in this paper. Vavilov's sponsorship of Lysenko is set in the intellectual context of plant physiology circa 1930, and in the political climate of the pressing needs of Russian agriculture at that time. Lysenko's rise was also favoured by (...) the Marxist philosophy of science then current in which the traditional distinction between basic and applied science was discarded and an opposition between proletarian and bourgeois science introduced. It is claimed that an understanding of the intellectual history must lie at the core of a social history of the Lysenko Affair if it is to prove adequate. (shrink)

This essay analyzes two Menippean fragments, quotations of Varro by Seneca and Tertullian respectively. The first of these describes the image of the Stoic god satirically as “round, without head, without prepuce.” This can be read as a caustic rebuttal of the main attributes of the god, such as are presented in fr. 583 B., there considered the rational origin of the whole. The latter fragment, fr. 582 a-b B. mentions a multitude of Ioves without heads and can be interpreted (...) as an ironic reference to the Stoic view of the deity: the Stoic god is at the same time singular and multiple because it is the sole source of generation of the whole. The allusion to the acephalous character of the deities in both fragments suggests an attribution of the passages to the same, lost satire, where a discussion about the nature of the gods took place. In particular, the comparison with some passages of Cicero’s De Natura Deorum permits the identification of the speaker with an Epicurean philosopher who opposes the Stoic conception of the divine. During the first half of the twentieth century there was a marked decline in biological conceptions of man and society. This paper describes the development of the views concerning eugenics held by the Norwegian scientific expertise, from open racism before World War I to a moderate nonracist eugenic program in the 1930's. It is claimed that public criticism of the popular eugenics movement by the experts came earlier in Norway than in most other countries, including the United States. The first (...) attack in 1915 was directed at dilettantic and irresponsible handling of scientific ideas, data and arguments. The conflict was over different views of science and its social role rather than over different aims for social development. The strict methodological demands that the scientific expertise wanted to enforce, provided a barrier against extreme eugenic views and proposals, and a source for critical arguments against eugenics in general. The experts differed considerably in their political views, but united in the crusade against dilettantism. They all feared premature applications of science to social problems. John Alfred Mjøen was leader of the popular eugenics movement in Norway. He learned about race-hygiene in Germany and started a public campaign in Norway around 1908. Mjøen formulated the so-called « Norwegian program for racehygiene » and played a prominent role in the international eugenics movement, but he was ostracized by Norwegian genetic scientists. Mjøen's strongest critic was Otto Lous Mohr, medical doctor and biologist, trained in genetics under T. H. Morgan. Mohr led the attack on Mjøen in 1915. Besides being a human geneticist of international prominence Mohr was strongly involved in campaigns for birth control and sexual instruction. Important supporters of a moderate eugenic program were Ragnar Vogt, founder of modern Norwegian psychiatry, and Johan Scharffenberg, psychiatrist and central public figure. Louis Pasteur’s defeat of belief in spontaneous generation has been a classical rationalist example of how the experimental approach of modern science can reveal superstition. Farley and Geison told a counter-story of how Pasteur’s success was due to political and ideological support rather than superior experimental science. They claimed that Pasteur violated proper norms of scientific method, and that the French Academy of Science did not see this, or did not want to. Farley and Geison argued that Pouchet’s experiments were (...) as valid as those of Pasteur. In this paper I argue that the core of the scientific debate was not general theories for or against spontaneous generation but the outcome of specific experiments. It was on the conduct of these experiments that the Academy made judgements favorable to Pasteur. Claude Bernard was a colleague of Pasteur, supportive and sometimes critical. I argue that Bernard’s fact-oriented methodology of “experimental medicine” is a better guide to explaining the controversy than the hypothetic-deductive view of scientific method typical of logical empiricism. There is at present uneasiness about the conceptual basis of genetics. The gene concept has become blurred and there are problems with the distinction between genotype and phenotype. In the present paper I go back to their role in the creation of modern genetics in the early twentieth century. The terms were introduced by the Danish botanist and geneticist Wilhelm Johannsen in his big textbook of 1909. Historical accounts usually concentrate on this book and his 1911 paper “The Genotype Conception (...) of Heredity.” His bean selection experiment of 1900–1903 is generally assumed to be the source of his genotype theory. The present paper examines the scientific context and meaning of this experiment, how it was received, and how the genotype theory became securely established by the early 1910s. I argue in conclusion that the genotype/phenotype distinction, which provides the empirical basis for Johannsen's gene, was scientifically well founded when introduced and still is. Keith Baverstock's criticism does not consider the force of the bean selection experiment at the time and as a paradigm for following investigations of heredity. (shrink)

Optimization, in general, is regarded as the process of finding optimal values for the variables of a given problem in order to minimize or maximize one or more objective function(s). Brain storm optimization (BSO) algorithm solves a complex optimization problem by mimicking the human idea generating process, in which a group of people solves a problem together. The aim of this paper is to present hybrid BSO algorithm solutions in the past 5 years. This study could be divided into two (...) parts: strategies and applications. In the first part, different strategies for the hybrid BSO algorithms intended to improve the various ability of the original BSO algorithm are displayed. Der vorpersönliche Leib und die persönliche geistige Existenz des Menschen sind dabei nicht sauber voneinander geschieden ; ihr Verhältnis darf auch nicht als ein statisches gedacht werden. Es ist vielmehr durch fluktuierende Übergänge in beide Richtungen gekennzeichnet. Höchst persönliche Akte sedimentieren, verwandeln sich in habituelle Erwerbe und Automatismen. Andererseits spielen derartige Habitualitäten in dem kulturellen, geistigen und persönlichen Leben des Menschen eine bedeutsame Rolle. Auf Grund dieser Voraussetzungen vermag M.-P. die Wahrnehmung des alter ego völlig anders zu beschreiben als Husserl. -Wenn mein Blick auf ein anderes Leib-Subjekt fällt, das handelt, dann empfangen alle Dinge, die das andere Subjekt umgeben, eine neue Bedeutung. Sie sind nunmehr das, was das Verhalten des Anderen aus ihnen macht. Eben deshalb sehen wir das andere Leib-Subjekt nie und nimmer als ein ausgedehntes Stück Materie an. Wir betrachten es auch nicht als einen Bestandteil der Welt. Das andere Leib-Subjekt ist vielmehr etwas, was mit der Welt umgeht, sie im Griff hat und auf sie einwirkt. So ist es erklärlich, dasz mein Leib, wenn er den Leib des Anderen wahrnimmt, darin eine vertraute Weise erkennt, sich mit den mundanen Dingen einzulassen. Er sieht in dem andern Leib ein Organ seiner eigenen möglichen Intentionen. Dieses Erkennen soll nun nach M.-P. zu einer Verschmelzung führen. So wie die Glieder meines Leibes ein System bilden, so bilden nunmehr mein Leib und der Leib des Anderen ein einziges Ganzes, das von einer einzigen namenlosen, vorpersönlichen Existenz bewohnt wird. Auf diese Weise ist die Koexistenz psychophysischer Subjekte erklärlich, nicht aber die von Mitmenschen. Doch scheint die Erhellung der letzteren keine Schwierigkeiten mehr zu bieten. Der Mitmensch ist ein Subjekt, das mit Kulturobjekten umzugehen weisz. Unter den Erzeugnissen der Kultur nun spielt die Sprache eine entscheidende Rolle. Im Dialog entwerfen ich und der Andere eine gemeinsame geistige Landschaft. Wir kommunizieren miteinander, weil wir eine gemeinschaftliche Welt besitzen. Die Antithese erinnert in mancherlei Hinsicht an die Existenzphilosophie Jean-Paul Sartre's. Mit der Einführung der subjektiven Leiblichkeit ist das Problem nicht gelöst, betont M.-P. Die Schwierigkeit ist darin gelegen, dasz das alter ego genau dieselben Ansprüche erhebt wie das ego. Ist das wahrnehende Ich ein im vollen Sinne persönliches Ich, dann kann es kein anderes persönliches Ich wahrnehmen. Ist es dagegen ein anonymes Subjekt, dann ist der Andere gleichfalls ein namenloser Organismus. Gehen wir von der letztgenannten Voraussetzung aus, dann nivellieren wir alles, was die Einmaligkeit und Einzigkeit persönlicher Existenz ausmacht. Die Unzulänglichkeit der These seigt sich, wenn wir versuchen, sie auf die Problematik des „cogito” anzuwenden. Das „cogito” legt Zeugnis von meiner individuellen Existenz ab. Zu meiner Existenz gehört ein „transzendentales Feld”, d. h. ein Bereich, warin sich alle Seiende in Objekte-für-mich verwandeln. Bevor wir ein affirmatives oder negatives Urteil über etwas fällen können, musz ich diesem Etwas einen „Platz” in meinem transzendentalen Feld zuerkannt haben. Dies gilt auch mit Bezug auf die Kommunikation und die kommunizierenden Wesen. Sie müssen gleichfalls cogita meines cogito's sein. Es gibt, versichert M.-P., einen erlebten Solipsismus der nicht transzendiert werden kann. Es ist auch nicht möglich, diesen Solipsismus durch die Einführung eines göttlichen ego aufzuheben, dessen geheime Wirksamkeit ich in mir selbst entdecke. Es ist wahr, dasz wir, ich und der andere, im Bezug auf ein überindividuelles göttliches Bewusztsein empirische Objekte wären. Wir wären dann beide den Blicken des unendlichen Zuschauers ausgesetzt ; keiner hätte dem andern gegenüber eine Vorrang. Doch hätte ich dann die Wirksamkeit des göttlichen Bewusztseins in mir infolge eines reflexiven Aktes entdeckt. Dies würde aber bedeuten, dasz ich, der ich nur Schatten bin, durch meine Erkenntnis die Fülle des Lichtes erhellt habe, die ich Gott nenne. Etwas Derartiges würde dem Wesen Gottes widersprechen. Die Antithese kann daher auch durch die Annahme eines unendlichen Bewusztseins nicht widerlegt werden. Die Negation der Negation. Inmitten der Welt begegne ich Anderen. Dies ist ein Phänomen, das sich nicht wegdisputieren läszt. Wenn solipsistische Philosophen von der volkommenen Einsamkeit des ego sprechen, dann musz betont werden, dasz selbst der Begriff der Einsamkeit einen Hinweis auf mögliche Andere enthält. Auch die Alternative : „Ich oder der Andere” ist unhaltbar. Das Denken und Formulieren der Alternative bringt ja bereits mit sich, dasz sowohl Ich wie der Andere implizite gesetzt werden. -Sartre's berühmte „ Dialektik des Blickes" besitzt nicht die Beweiskraft, die ihr vielfach zu erkannt wird. Es ist wahr, dasz der objektivierende Blick des Anderen, solange dieser tatenlos bleibt und sich nicht mitteilt, die Kommunikation zeitweilig suspendiert. Es genügt aber, dasz der Andere ein Wort spricht, um ihn der Kommunikation zugänglich zu machen. Die Antithese wäre unwiderlegbar, wenn ihre Voraussetzungen zuträfen, wenn es nur zwei Seinsweisen gäbe : das Subjekt-und das Objekt-sein, das bewuszte und das dingartige Sein, das Für-sich-und das An-sich-sein. Diese Voraussetzungen weist M.-P.ab. Er hat -einigermaszen im Anschlusz an Husserl -den Beweis dafür geliefert, dasz das wahrgenommene Ding immer als einem groszen Zusammenhang angehörig aufgefaszt wird, letztlich dem Zusammenhang einer Welt. Unser Sein zur Welt geht daher immer der Wahrnehmung von „ diesem" und „jenem” voran. Die Welt ist offenbar weder Subjekt noch Objekt, weder Bewusztsein noch Ding. Was im Bezug auf die natürlichen Welt festgestellt worden is, gilt auch von der sozialen Welt. Unser ursprüngliches Verstehen des Sozialen macht es uns erst möglich, objektivierende Urteile über Individuen und Gruppen zu fällen. -M.-P. illustriert dies an den Beispielen des Klassenbewusztseins und des Nationalbewusztseins. Weder Klasse noch Nation dürfen als ein Fatum betrachtet werden, das von auszen her über mich verhängt worden ist. Ebensowenig sind sie „Werte”, die ich als souveraine Freiheit in meiner Immanenz „gesetzt” habe. „Klasse” und „Nation” sind vielmehr bestimmte Formen der Koexistenz, die für menschliche Individuen einen Aufforderungscharakter besitzen. In ruhigen Zeiten gehen Reize von ihnen aus, die nur gelegentliche Reaktionen auslösen. Man ahnt, dasz es sie gibt, aber man weisz es nicht. In einer revolutionären Situation oder in der Stunde einer nationalen Katastrophe können sie aber Anlasz zu einer klassenbewuszten bezw. nationalbewuszten Stellungnahme geben. Was dann in der Form einer Wahl, einer Entscheidung, eines Bekentnissen in Erscheinung tritt, ist lediglich die ausdrückliche Bestätigung eines vorhergehenden stillschweigenden Engagements. In diesem Sinne bezeichnet M.-P. das Soziale als etwas, das nicht primär Objekt unseres Bewusztseins sondern eine Dimension unseres Existierens ist. Die Frage nach der Transzendenz. Sind M.-P. zufolge soziale Gebilde wie z. B. „Klasse” oder „Nation” bewutetseinstranszendente Realitäten oder bewusztseinsimmanente Inhalte ? -Es ist für M.-P. charakteristisch, dasz er diese Alternative ablehnt. Er wirft zwar das Problem der Transzendenz auf, aber er stellt es auf eine neuartige Weise. Transzendent nennt er diejenigen Phänomene, die mich übersteigen, die aber dennoch nur insoferne für mich sind, als ich sie erfasse und erlebe. Er illustriert jene Problematik an der Hand der Phänomene „Vergangenheit” und „Welt”. Die Vergangenheit ist für den Realisten eine Spur, die sich auf meiner Hirnrinde oder in meiner Pyche befindet. Für den Idealisten ist sie ein cogitatum, das ein transcendentaler Geist in meiner Innerlichkeit konstituiert. In beiden Fällen wäre die Vergangenheit Gegenwart. M.-P. zufolge hat es die Vergangenheit immer schon für mich gegeben, auch wenn ich sie nicht mittels thetischer Akte vergegenwärtigt habe. In analoger Weise ist die Welt allerdings das, was mich umringt, aber sie befaszt mich, auch ohne dasz ich mir davon reflexiv bewuszt werde. Sofern mein Bewusztsein ausdrücklich Zeugnis von ihr ablegt, musz ich die Welt immanent nennen. Sofern sk aber mein Leben bestimmt hat, bevor ich von ihr gewuszt habe, ist sie bewusztseinstranszendent. Dieselbe „negatio supposti” wendet M.-P. nun auch auf das alter ego an. Der Andere ist transzendent, denn sein Sein-für-mich kommt nicht durch irgendwelche intenþionale Leistungen - Analogieschlusz, Introjektion oder Einfühlung -zustande. Ich konstituiere den Anderen nicht, denn ich bin kein göttliches Bewusztsein. Er ist bei mir, bevor ich ausdrücklich kennende, strebende oder wertende Akte vollziehe. -Dennoch ist es wahr, dasz das alter ego der Andere in Bezug auf mich ist. Das könnte er nicht sein, wenn mein Bewusztsein sein Sein nicht bezeugte. Das Zeugnis meines Bewusztseins ist dabei die ausdrückliche Bekräftigung von etwas, das im Stillen bereits in mir lebte. Es ist jedoch erforderlich, damit der Andere mir wirklich gegenübersteht. Infolge dieser wesentlich notwendigen bewuszten Affirmation ist der Andere meinem Bewusztsein auch immanent. - Wenn M.-P. daher behauptet, dasz das alter ego sowohl transzendent als immanent ist, dann darf man das nicht als eine spielerische Ausflucht betrachten. Es bedeutet, dasz sich mein gesamtes Leben in einer Sphäre von Sozialität abspielt, und dasz diese Sphäre das bewuszte Beurteilen und Sich-Verhalten gegenüber sozialen Partnern erst möglich macht. Das transzendentale Motiv im Denken M. P.'s. Das Problem der Transzendenz stellt sich demnach bei M.-P. auf eine sehr besondere Weise : es ist die Frage nach der Seinsart eines Transzendenten, das nicht ohne weiteres Überstieg des Selbst und eines Immanenten, das nicht schlechthin Wohnen in dem Selbst ist. Überdies formuliert er das Problem nicht in statischen, sondern in dynamischen Ausdrücken und Begriffen. Wie kann ich „ Urpräsenz" sein, die jede Anwesenheit eines Anderen bei mir bedingt, und gleichzeitig „Entgegenwärtigung”, die mich entrückt, fragt er sich. -Die Lösung dieser für ihn entscheidende Frage sucht er in der Richtung einer Transzendentalphilosophie. Das Paradox der immanenten Transzendenz kann nur dann philosophisch begreiflicher werden, wenn etwas gefunden wird, das die beiden Pole : „ Mich” und „den Anderen” umspannt ; das den Gegensatz zwischen Innerlichkeit und Äuszerlichkeit aufhebt ; das Interiorität zur Äuszerlichkeit erweitert und die Exteriorität verinnerlicht. M.-P. führt zunächst einen einigermaszen veränderten Begriff der Subjektivität ein. Das Bewusztsein, das cogito, die Subjektivität ist ihm zufolge nicht ohne weiteres als Identität mit sich selbst, als Selbstanwesenheit, als Wohnen in sich selbst zu charakterisieren. Ja, die absolute Selbstanwesenheit wird in Wahrheit niemals vollkommen realisiert, da die Subjektivität gleichzeitig auch Gerichtet-sein auf den Andern, Offenstehen für die Welt und Sprung nach der Zukunft ist. Sofern nun die Subjektivität nicht starre, unveränderliche Identität sondern ek-statisches Sein beim Anderen ist, ist ihre Seinsweise keine andere als die der Temporalität. So wie die Zeit in jeder ihrer temporalen Ekstasen das zur Entfaltung bringt, was in der vorgehenden als Keim angelegt war, so ist auch die Subjektivität der Drang, das zum Ausdruck zu bringen, was bereits implizit in ihre gelebt hat. -Nach M.-P. ist es falsch zu behaupten, das Subjekt befinde sich „ in" der Zeit. Er betrachtet vielmehr Subjekt und Zeit als ein und dieselbe alles gründende Wirklichkeit. Damit hat er auch das Problem der immanenten Transzendenz seiner Lösung näher gebracht. Die Zeit ist ja einerseits Anwesen, Gegenwart, Urpräsenz ; andererseits ist sie Flusz, Entgegenwärtigung, Ekstase. Sie ist das „wahre Transzendentale”, der „Ursprung der Transzendenzen”. Damit ist auch klar, welche Rolle das transzendentale Motiv im Denken M. P.' s spielt. M.-P. befaszt sich nicht mit der Möglichkeit formaler apriorischer Prinzipien. Er entwirft auch keine Lehre von den konstituierenden Leistungen eines transzendentalen Bewusztseins. M.-P. glaubt, das „wahre Transzendentale”, das der Ursprung der Realitäten ist, in der Temporalität entdeckt zu haben. Im Lichte dieser Entdeckung meint M.-P. nun auch, das Rätsel des alter ego lösen zu können. Es ist wahr, dasz ein Bewusztsein das andere ausschlieszt. Mit der Temporalität ist es aber anders gestellt. Die Zeit ist ja das Transzendens schlechthin. Sie überfliegt alle Grenzen und überbrückt alle Abgründe. So wie meine Gegenwart einer Zukunft entgegenwächst, die ich nicht kenne und vielleicht nie kennen lernen werde, so öffnet sich eine Gegenwart auch der Gegenwart des Anderen, die mir unbekannt ist. Ich verstehe auf vorprädikative Weise, dasz im Anderen derselbe Drang derZeitungen am Werk ist wie in mir, und dieses Verständnis gestattet mir, in dem Anderen den möglichen geistigen Partner zu erkennen. Die Analyse und Interpretation der Sozialphilosophie M.-P. gibt dem Verfasser Anlasz zu einigen kritische Betrachtungen. Sie betreffen vier Denkmotive M.-P.' s : die vermeintliche Verschmelzung der psychophysischen Subjekte, seinen Begriff der Welt, seinen existenzphilosophischen und seinen transzendentalphilosophischen Ansatz. Gezeigt wird, dasz aus den beiden letztgenannten Ansätzen keine geeignete Grundlage für eine personale Sozialphilosophie zu gewinnen ist. (shrink)

The harmful consequences of fossil fuels use has resulted in the promotion of clean and renewable energies. During the past decades, green technologies have experienced a strong development, paying especial attention to wind energy, that covers a significant share of the electric energy demand. In this context, the main efforts are focused on the optimization of wind generator facilities, not only in the mechanic design but also in the energy management. Then, the present work deals with the prediction of the (...) energy generated in a small wind turbine placed in a bioclimatic house located on the north west region of Spain. This includes an analysis of the characteristics of the atmospheric variables registered during the turbine operation for a period of one year and an exploratory examination of a range of regression techniques in order to assess the suitability of using the registered information to predict the installation’s power generation levels on the short term. The study detailed in this work proves that this objective is an attainable one with a good degree of accuracy. (shrink)

Batteries are a fundamental storage component due to its various applications in mobility, renewable energies and consumer electronics among others. Regardless of the battery typology, one key variable from a user’s perspective is the remaining energy in the battery. It is usually presented as the percentage of remaining energy compared to the total energy that can be stored and is labeled State Of Charge (SOC). This work addresses the development of a hybrid model based on a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) (...) power cell, due to its broad implementation. The proposed model calculates the SOC, by means of voltage and electric current as inputs and the latter as the output. Therefore, four models based on k-Means, Agglomerative Clustering, Gaussian Mixture and Spectral Clustering techniques have been tested in order to obtain an optimal solution. (shrink)

During the perinatal period, the establishment of the attachment relationship with the fetus and subsequently with the real child is crucial for the parents' and the child's well-being. Coherently with the assumption that the attachment relationship starts to develop during pregnancy, this systematic review aims to analyze and systematize studies focused on the association between pre-natal attachment and parent-to-infant attachment, in order to clarify the emerging results and provide useful information for clinical purposes. Nineteen studies were included. Sixteen researches identified (...) a positive relationship between pre-natal attachment and parent-to-infant attachment, and three articles highlighted a negative association between antenatal attachment and post-partum bonding disorders. These results were found both in women and men, in normative and at-risk pregnancies, adopting different assessment approaches. However, only small or moderate associations were found. Future studies are needed to further confirm these findings across different populations and with different methodological approaches. Moreover, studies would be needed in order to clarify mechanisms through which pre-natal attachment influences parent-to-infant attachment, as well as protective and risk factors which intervene between these two variables. The pandemic has adversely impacted children. The vaccine roll-out to children aged 12 - 17 years is important to curb the spread of the virus and allow children to revert to some form of normality. Children’s rights to equality, education, health and food have been impeded during the pandemic. However, there is a persistent hesitancy towards the vaccine roll-out. This is apparent from a case before the High Court in Pretoria, in the pending matter between the African Christian Democratic Party (...) and others v The Minister of the National Department of Health: Dr M Phaahla and Others. SECTION27’s intervention as amicus curiae highlights the importance of vaccines, and provides evidence to illustrate the adverse impact of the pandemic on learners’ rights to equality, education, food and health. Since the Kierkegaard Studies Monograph Series (KSMS) was first published in 1997, it has served as the authoritative book series in the field. Starting from 2011 the Kierkegaard Studies Monograph Series will intensify the peer-review process with a new editorial and advisory board. KSMS is published on behalf of the Søren Kierkegaard Research Centre at the University of Copenhagen. KSMS publishes outstanding monographs in all fields of Kierkegaard research. This includes Ph.D. dissertations, Habilitation theses, conference proceedings and single author works (...) by senior scholars. The goal of KSMS is to advance Kierkegaard studies by encouraging top-level scholarship in the field. The editorial and advisory boards are deeply committed to creating a genuinely international forum for publication which integrates the many different traditions of Kierkegaard studies and brings them into a constructive and fruitful dialogue. This article investigates a series of additions made to JRL Gaster MS 2037, a newly identified copy of Peter of Poitier‘s Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi. Following a detailed description and dating of the manuscript, it investigates two sets of additions to the roll in depth. It establishes that the first motive behind the inclusion of such additions was educative – serving to extend the historic information given in the Compendium, while the second motive was devotional – elevating the status (...) of the Virgin Mary through the enhancement of her genealogical record. Given the fact that the manuscript was produced in the mid-fifteenth century, this focus on the Virgin likely had a polemic purpose, situating the manuscript in the context of debates over the Immaculate Conception, and using Alexander Nequams Expositio super Cantica canticorumto this end. In identifying the sources used, as well as the limits on the compiler imposed by the physical form of the roll, this examination of Gaster MS 2037 offers an insight into the later reception of this popular text. How would that affect urban planning “now” and in times of crisis? How do we prepare for the likelihood of rolling similar crises with an eye on returning the urban commons to citizens? -/- There is the old adage that under capitalism, risk is always socialized and profit is always privatized. We are (...) seeing it now, under the COVID-19 crisis. The huge bailouts launched by governments are symptomatic of the crisis in political economy, just as they were post-2008. “Too big to fail” has sponsored monsters that refuse to back off without threatening the collapse of the entire system. Francisco Goya’s “The sleep of Reason produces monsters …” comes to mind. -/- Physical and immaterial culture, in our current Western civilisation, are intimately linked. Yet the focus for urban design is generally on the material or physical side, with the immaterial left to its own devices. Increasingly, urban design measures are merely ameliorative and aesthetic, with the larger share shaped by a political economy dictated by market ideology or “politicalology.” What transpires, nonetheless, is an immaterial commons that constitutes a public or private intellectual commons – often a mix of the two; but, in the case of domination by market ideology, the privatization of “general intellect” proceeds by abject appropriation. In such a technocratically driven model, subjective states become increasingly important. As Indian architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi once said, “Smart cities are smart people.” -/- How might these two otherwise contiguous and synchronous systems be brought back into a properly civic-minded rapport with or without crisis-driven change? Are there alternate models for the urban commons? What measures might be put in place in advance, or as provisional intercessions? (shrink)

The paper brings existential temporality, as developed in the work of phenomenologists Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, and Husserl, into dialogue with historical materialism. What results is the development of a theoretical background for what the author terms futural materialism, which is taken to be a complimentary logical extension of historical materialist projects. To this end, it is suggested that the past and the future are best understood as materially existing in the present in an immanent way, mediated by conscious beings in the (...) form of memory, projection, residual effect, and affect. Put differently, the present's presence in the past and future play a determining roll in those temporal dimensions, which subsequently fold back into the configuration of the present. Following Nietzsche and drawing influence from Guattari and Deleuze, it is argued that past and future are relatively fluid tools to be purposively deployed in the present for particular purposes rather than being transcendent facts which subjectivity must merely contend with. It is further asserted that as part of a broader non-reductive material monist project of social transformation, both futural and historical materialism are necessary considerations. (shrink)

Introduction Understanding the views of the public is essential if generally acceptable policies are to be devised that balance research access to general practice patient records with protection of patients' privacy. However, few large studies have been conducted about public attitudes to research access to personal health information. Methods A mixed methods study was performed. Informed by focus groups and literature review, a questionnaire was designed which assessed attitudes to research access to personal health information and factors that influence these. (...) A postal survey was conducted of an electoral roll-based sample of the adult population of Ireland. Results Completed questionnaires were returned by 1575 (40.6%). Among the respondents, 67.5% were unwilling to allow GPs to decide when researchers could access identifiable personal health information. However, 89.5% said they would agree to ongoing consent arrangements, allowing the sharing by GPs of anonymous personal health information with researchers without the need for consent on a study-by-study basis. Increasing age (by each 10-year increment), being retired and primary level education only were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of agreeing that any personal health information could be shared on an ongoing basis: OR 1.39 (95% CI 1.18 to 1.63), 2.00 (95% CI 1.22 to 3.29) and 3.91 (95% CI 1.95 to 7.85), respectively. Conclusions Although survey data can be prone to response biases, this study suggests that prior consent agreements allowing the supply by GPs of anonymous personal health information to researchers may be widely supported, and that populations willing to opt in to such arrangements may be sufficiently representative to facilitate valid and robust consent-dependent observational research. Over the COVID-19 period, much attention has been paid to the governance relationship between citizens and the state. In this article, however, we focus on a feature that is less evident in the day-to-day living of the social contract: the relationship between citizens. Because this horizontal cohesion is critical to the social contract, we suggest that it should not be neglected, even amid a deepening crisis of state–citizen relations. Using the case of South Africa's vaccine roll-out as an illustration, we (...) argue that certain kinds of state failures – failures in making complex fairness decisions, in treating citizens as equals when enacting these decisions, and in providing public justification for these decisions – risk dual damage to both citizen–state and citizen–citizen relations and so undermine an already fragile social contract. Zusammenfassung Das Thema des Gottesdienstes hat in der neueren theologiegeschichtlichen Forschung bislang keine hinreichende Beachtung gefunden. Die Diskussionen über die Notwendigkeit des Gottesdienstes, seinen Charakter und seinen Symbolgehalt führten am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zu einer grundsätzlichen Erörterung des positiven Charakters des Christentums und seiner institutionellen Rolle in der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft. Die Schriften Immanuel Kants, Carl Friedrich Stäudlins und Friedrich von Hardenbergs belegen den damaligen Wandel der Gottesdienstauffassung, indem sie die Ideen der Französischen Revolution und deren Implikationen für das religiöse (...) Leben thematisieren. Kants Unterscheidung von politischer und moralischer Religion nutzte Stäudlin, um die theophilanthropische Form eines aufklärerischen Gottesdienstes zu kritisieren. Novalis beurteilte die Theophilanthropie, die er als Negation jeglicher genuinen Religion ansah, ebenfalls kritisch. In Kants, Stäudlins und Novalis' Stellungnahmen zu Fragen des Gottesdienstes deutet sich zugleich der Übergang von aufklärerischen Religionskategorien zu frühromantischen Religionsmotiven an. This volume explores the reorganisation of knowledge taking place in the course of Galileo's research process extending over a period of more than thirty years, pursued within a network of exchanges with his contemporaries, and documented by a vast collection of research notes. It has revealed the challenging objects that motivated and shaped Galileo's thinking and closely followed the knowledge reorganization engendered by theses challenges. It has thus turned out, for example, that the problem of reducing the properties of pendulum (...) motion to the laws governing naturally accelerated motion on inclined planes was the mainspring for the formation of Galileo's comprehensive theory of naturally accelerated motion.
