Zeugnisse eines engagierten und um Freundschaft werbenden Philosophen Der Philosoph und judische Denker Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) zeigt sich in den Briefen an seinen schweizerischen Schuler und spateren Professor am Zurcher Polytechnikum, August Stadler (1850-1910), als impulsiver, mitteilsamer, Vertrauen schenkender und um Freundschaft werbender Philosoph. Seine zahlreichen Bemerkungen zu systematischen Problemen, zur damaligen Wissenschaftslandschaft und zur allgemeinen politischen Lage sind eine unschatzbare Quelle fur das intellektuelle Profil jener Zeit und besonders fur die Begegnung mit den Personlichkeiten Cohens und Stadlers. Der (...) Schwerpunkt der Ausgabe liegt auf den in Zurich aufbewahrten Schriftstucken von 1872 bis 1881. Kurz vor Beginn der Korrespondenz hatte Cohen in Berlin einen Kreis von Studenten um sich versammelt, dem sich auch August Stadler anschloss. Die personliche Nahe zwischen beiden war sofort gross und blieb trotz mancher Meinungsverschiedenheiten ungetrubt. Neuneinhalb Jahre spater, im letzten Brief dieser Reihe, erscheint erstmals der Name des neuen Marburger Privatdozenten Paul Natorp. Damit beginnt die Geschichte der sogenannten Marburger Schule. Der vorliegende Band beinhaltet somit den Ruckblick auf die Vorgeschichte dieser einflussreichen, stilbildenden Denkrichtung im wilhelminischen Deutschland. Inhaltlich nicht weniger interessant sind die spateren, nicht dem Zurcher Corpus angehorigen Briefe aus den Jahren zwischen 1886 und 1905. In ihnen aussert sich Cohen zu seinen Begegnungen mit Gottfried Keller in Zurich, zu dessen Tod und zuletzt zur Sorge um Stadlers Gesundheit. Im Anhang findet sich eine Liste samtlicher Lehrveranstaltungen Cohens in Marburg und an der Berliner Hochschule fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums. Around 1800, Johann Gottlieb Fichte's primary circle of recipients consisted not only of philosophers, but above all of theologians, religiously engaged laymen, educators, writers and caricaturists, medical practitioner, civil servants and lawyers. The entire reception in post-Kantian philosophy is limited to the years between 1792 and 1810. This period can be divided into two phases: namely the phase up to 1799, in which Fichte acquired students and followers, and the phase from 1799 onwards, in which Fichte's reception was related to (...) the atheism controversy. The discussion about Fichte began to wane in 1810, so that Beneke even claimed in 1833 that Fichte's philosophy "must be regarded as completely lost". In this revolutionary work, the author sets the stage for the science of the 21st Century, pursuing an unprecedented synthesis of fields previously considered unrelated. Beginning with simple classical concepts, he ends with a complex multidisciplinary theory requiring a high level of abstraction. The work progresses across the sciences in several multidisciplinary directions: Mathematical logic, fundamental physics, computer science and the theory of intelligence. Extraordinarily enough, the author breaks new ground in all these fields. In the field of fundamental physics (...) the author reaches the revolutionary conclusion that physics can be viewed and studied as logic in a fundamental sense, as compared with Einstein's view of physics as space-time geometry. This opens new, exciting prospects for the study of fundamental interactions. A formulation of logic in terms of matrix operators and logic vector spaces allows the author to tackle for the first time the intractable problem of cognition in a scientific manner. In the same way as the findings of Heisenberg and Dirac in the 1930s provided a conceptual and mathematical foundation for quantum physics, matrix operator logic supports an important breakthrough in the study of the physics of the mind, which is interpreted as a fractal of quantum mechanics. Introducing a concept of logic quantum numbers, the author concludes that the problem of logic and the intelligence code in general can be effectively formulated as eigenvalue problems similar to those of theoretical physics. With this important leap forward in the study of the mechanism of mind, the author concludes that the latter cannot be fully understood either within classical or quantum notions. A higher-order covariant theory is required to accommodate the fundamental effect of high-level intelligence. The landmark results obtained by the author will have implications and repercussions for the very foundations of science as a whole. Moreover, Stern's Matrix Logic is suitable for a broad spectrum of practical applications in contemporary technologies. (shrink)

Carl Menger’s Principles of Economics published in 1871 is usually regarded as the founding document of the Austrian School of economics. Many of the School’s prominent representatives, including Friedrich Wieser, Eugen Böhm-Bawerk, Ludwig Mises, Hans Mayer, Friedrich August Hayek, Fritz Machlup, Oskar Morgenstern, and Gottfried Haberler, as well as Israel Kirzner, Ludwig Lachmann, Murray Rothbard, and Don Lavoie, advanced and modified Menger’s research program in sometimes conflicting ways. Yet, some characteristics of the Austrian School remain (nearly) consensual from (...) its foundation through to contemporary neo-Austrian economists. In eight sections, we will briefly discuss some of the philosophical and methodological characteristics of Austrian economics: Austrian action theory and interpretative understanding, a relatively thoroughgoing subjectivism, methodological individualism, ontological individualism, apriorism, essentialism, an often overstated rejection of formal methods, and alertness to economic semantics. The concept of implicit definition has played a central role in the controversies about the foundations of geometry. The history of this concept, however, exhibits several important confusions. The term has been used in at least three different senses—Gergonne's position, Hilbert's position of the so-called definitions by axioms , and that of Pasch and Dubislav in the sense of Russell's contextual definition. Frege's contribution to the explication of Hilbert's view has occasioned an adequate appraisal in recent years. A summary account (...) is given. The main purpose of the paper is to present some details about the historical development of the transfer of Gergonne's term ‘implicit definition’ to the Hilbert position, a transfer which goes back to the Peano School and was disseminated by Enriques. What is informed consent in medicine? For more than a generation, this deceptively simple question has vexed the law, discomfited medicine, and generated much inspired, provocative, and even contentious commentary.The question has also spawned several lawsuits. On one side stand patients who claim that, at the time of consent, they were ignorant of a particular risk; who state that, with more or different information, they would have chosen a different treatment; and who argue that, because of an adverse outcome, they (...) now deserve remuneration. On the other side, doctors uneasily watch the lengthening list of suits. Some, troubled by the law's expectations, have reacted by variously describing informed consent as a myth, a fiction, an unattainable goal, or a snare to entrap physicians. They point to the legal commentary condemning informed consent law as ill-defined, diffuse, and fraught with inconsistency, hazy at its best and virtually indecipherable to physicians at its worst: and lacking a fair standard to determine when a patient has sufficient knowledge to give effective consent. This book considers different forms of voluntarism developed from the 13th to 18th centuries. By crossing the conventional dividing line between the medieval and early modern periods, the volume draws important new insights on the historical development of voluntarism. Voluntarism places a special emphasis on the will when it comes to the analysis and explanation of fundamental philosophical questions and problems. Since the Middle Ages, voluntarist considerations and views played an important role in the development of different theories of action, (...) ethics, metaethics, and metaphysics. The chapters in this volume are grouped according to three distinct kinds of voluntarism: psychological, ethical, and theological voluntarism. They address topics such as the threat of irrationality as the standard objection to voluntarism, incontinent actions and their explanation, the nature of the will as rational appetite, the relationship between intellect and will, the implications of conceptions of the will for political freedom, and the relations between divine freedom and the modal status of eternal truths. In Frege’s analysis of the relationship between science and fiction there are two important aspects, which the paper will discuss. It shows that Frege makes a strict distinction between Dichtung und Wissenschaft on the level of object language but not on the level of metalanguage. In his “On Sense and Reference” and in scattered remarks elsewhere Frege explains the semantics of scientific and everyday discourse. As a kind of side product he presents an explication of the concept of fictional discourse (...) concerning questions of illocutionary force and reference. Here Frege anticipates J. R. Searle’s speech-act-theory of fictional discourse, which allows to understand works of fiction as consisting of fictional discourse. On the basis of Frege’s distinctions this approach is defended against ontological arguments, which make use of terms like ‘fictive entities’ or ‘non-existent objects’ in the Meinongian tradition. Frege excludes the connotative or figurative elements of language, called “colourings and shadings” of sense or thought, from the scientific use of language and assigns such elements to “the art of poetry” or “eloquence”. The fact that the expression ‘colouring’ is itself a figurative term, raises a paradoxical question: To what extent does understanding Frege’s own explanation of the difference between sense and colouring depend on the poetic or at least rhetoric use of language? There are reasons to believe that Frege was—even if only reluctantly—aware of this paradox. Otherwise he would not have repeatedly emphasized that explanations of categorial logical distinctions cannot dispense with “figurative expressions”. Insofar as such distinctions are “reliant upon the accommodating understanding of the reader”, they pay tribute to a rhetoric of cognition. While Frege denies that colourings contribute to cognitive content, he must still admit that they make an indispensable protreptic contribution to conveying cognition. (shrink)
