The aim of this paper is to clarify the role of category theory in the foundations of mathematics. There is a good deal of confusion surrounding this issue. A standard philosophical strategy in the face of a situation of this kind is to draw various distinctions and in this way show that the confusion rests on divergent conceptions of what the foundations of mathematics ought to be. This is the strategy adopted in the present paper. It is divided into 5 (...) sections. We first show that already in the set theoretical framework, there are different dimensions to the expression foundations of. We then explore these dimensions more thoroughly. After a very short discussion of the links between these dimensions, we move to some of the arguments presented for and against category theory in the foundational landscape. Amidst the many brain events evoked by a visual stimulus, which are specifically associated with conscious perception, and which merely reflect non-conscious processing? Several recent neuroimaging studies have contrasted conscious and non-conscious visual processing, but their results appear inconsistent. Some support a correlation of conscious perception with early occipital events, others with late parieto-frontal activity. Here we attempt to make sense of those dissenting results. On the basis of a minimal neuro-computational model, the global neuronal workspace hypothesis, we propose a (...) taxonomy which distinguishes between vigilance and access to conscious report, as well as between subliminal, preconscious and conscious processing. We suggest that these distinctions map onto different neural mechanisms, and that conscious perception is systematically associated with a sudden surge of parieto-frontal activity causing top-down amplification. The conceptual history of cognitive science remains for the most part unwritten. In this groundbreaking book, Jean-Pierre Dupuy—one of the principal architects of cognitive science in France—provides an important chapter: the legacy of cybernetics. Contrary to popular belief, Dupuy argues, cybernetics represented not the anthropomorphization of the machine but the mechanization of the human. In this paper, I want to look at the dual question, namely the underlying structures of logic. Indeed, from a mathematical structuralist standpoint, it makes perfect sense to try to identify the abstract structures underlying logic. We claim that one answer to this question is provided by categorical logic. Being a philosopher with a scientific background, I immediately brought them together and tried to reconceptualize the latter in terms of the former. In a sense, I haven't stopped doing that in the last 45 years. That is why I (...) feel fully at home with the goals pursued by the organizers of this conference.I do not believe it is feasible or even desirable to operate the rapprochement between the two disciplines at a global level. The history of cognitive science is exceedingly involved, and the part played by artificial intelligence in it compared to the part played by the neurosciences has varied greatly over time.1 Only a piecemeal approach makes sense. I present here four short case studies that cover the whole period, from the beginnings in cybernetics to today's artificial intelligence (AI).In order to better situate these studies within a broader frame, I propose the diagram in Figure 1. To comment on it would require more time than available for my whole presentation. Let me just say the following. [End Page 1]It is essential to distinguish between two kinds of AI. The first to bear this name was launched by economist Herbert Simon and computer scientist Allan Newell at a Dartmouth conference in 1956. It was based on the premise that thinking is computing, with this computation bearing on sentences of a "language of thought" implementable in a digital computer. It turns out that this AI(1) was progressively substituted from the 1980s onward by an AI(2), which, to some extent, was a return to a fundamental result obtained by cybernetics in 1943. Neurophysiologist Warren McCulloch and mathematician Walter Pitts had constructed a mathematical model of a network of elementary calculators called "neurons" and explored its properties. The capacity to "think" was one of these. It was not situated at the elementary level, as was the case in AI(1), but it emerged at the collective level from the interactions between the neurons.This model was heavily criticized by the supporters of AI(1),2 and its first implementations, in the notorious "Perceptron" in particular (1957), were pitiful failures. However, the emergence of "second-order cybernetics" under the guidance of cybernetician Heinz von Foerster and the theory of complex, self-organizing systems that it helped develop, in cooperation and rivalry with similar efforts in the physical sciences, enabled the neural network model to come to a second life under different names: formal neurons, deep learning, big data, and the like. Together, they constitute AI(2).The following network of influences wouldn't have been possible without its stem, that is, the boxes containing the names of Kurt Gödel and Alan Turing. The former revolutionized logic by showing that reasoning about arithmetic and arithmetic are one and the same, insofar as it is possible to code in a 1-to-1 fashion propositions about integers (for instance, "7 is a prime number") by means of integers. The latter demonstrated that some mechanisms can self-transcend inasmuch as they generate an ensemble of outputs that cannot be defined mechanistically. Later, John von Neumann, who is credited along with Alan Turing with having invented the digital computer, would use this logical possibility to define complexity: A mechanism is complex if it is capable of generating one more complex than itself. How do chemists assign numbers to chemicals properties? What do these numbers refer to? To answer these questions, we will first point out both the context-dependence of chemicals and the epistemic limitations of chemistry. We will then investigate how chemists use various procedures to stabilize measurements and how they use mixtures of samples as “references” in order to determine the amount of different chemicals in a sample. This study will enable us to query how it is possible for chemists to (...) change one factor while holding others constant at each step of the measurement procedure. This part of our work which will lead us to query the meaning of the ceteris paribus clause and the very possibility of making holistic inferences in the domain of chemistry. To conclude, we will highlight how methodological pluralism developed by chemists makes it possible for a relational type of consistency to emerge. (shrink)

Building on the storytelling, political storytelling, and religious storytelling literatures, I examined the role religious stories play in the formation of revolutionary convictions. This study’s primary sources of data are volumes I, II, and III of The Gospel in Solentiname, a historical record of religious discussions that took place in an isolated campesino community at a seminary-like setting under a growing national revolutionary scenario in 1970s Nicaragua. My analysis of these discussions reveals that religious discourse based on stories of prophecy, (...) Christian virtue, miracles, and social challenges to revolutionary action allowed story-users to assert, explore, and promote models of action and moral orientation consistent with the making of revolution. Schmitt y énonce la nécessité pour l’Allemagne d’un « Etat total », équivalent allemand à ses yeux de « l’État totalitaire » de l’Italie fasciste. Cette prise de parole aura un (...) effet décisif : trente-cinq représentants de la finance et de l’industrie allemandes, auditeurs de la conférence, adresseront une pétition à Hindenburg, président du Reich. Ils l’inciteront à appeler le « chef du grand mouvement » au poste de chancelier du Reich. Ce « mouvement » est le déjà criminel NSDAP : le Parti national-socialiste ouvrier allemand, le parti « nazi ». Le 30 janvier 33, Hitler sera chancelier. En neuf semaines, la conférence de Schmitt aura eu pour effet d’abattre tous les obstacles à l’avènement du Troisième Reich. La formule de « l’Etat total » a donc su transmettre aux temps et aux langages une charge à l’énergie insoupçonnée, porteuse des plus grands crimes. Ainsi est révélée la responsabilité centrale de Schmitt dans la mise en place du nazisme. Ce juriste, qui étrangement apparaît pour beaucoup aujourd’hui comme un penseur politique de référence, n’a d’abord avancé qu’une seule carte d’un jeu mortifère. Mais c’était une carte maîtresse, elle était dangereusement efficace pour faire passer le pire dans l’Histoire. Il était intéressant de lire en parallèle les « Journaux » de Schmitt et de mesurer l’attention portée par le juriste aux événements, dans les semaines qui précèdent et suivent l’arrivée d’Hitler à la chancellerie du Reich. Ce qui frappe est cependant la banalité quotidienne qui transparaît dans ces notes. Si ce n’est, peut-être, qu’un mot va lui paraître acquérir un poids nouveau : « Jude », « juif ». Le réalisme scientifique occupe une place centrale dans le système philosophique de Mario Bunge. Au cœur de cette thèse, on trouve l’affirmation selon laquelle nous pouvons connaître le monde partiellement. Il s’ensuit que les théories scientifiques ne sont pas totalement vraies ou totalement fausses, mais plutôt partiellement vraies et partiellement fausses. Ces énoncés sur la connaissance scientifique, à première vue plausible pour quiconque est familier avec la pratique scientifique, demandent néanmoins à être clarifiés, précisés et, ultimement, à être inclus dans (...) un cadre théorique plus large et rigoureux. Depuis ses toutes premières publications sur ces questions et jusqu’à récemment, Mario Bunge n’a cessé d’interpeller les philosophes afin qu’ils développent une théorie, au sens propre du terme, de la vérité partielle afin de clarifier les enjeux épistémologiques liés au réalisme scientifique. Bunge a lui-même proposé plusieurs parties de cette théorie au fil des années, mais aucune de ces propositions ne l’a satisfait pleinement et la construction de cette théorie demeure un problème entier. Dans ce texte, nous passerons rapidement en revue certaines des approches proposées par Bunge dans ses publications et nous esquisserons certaines pistes qui devraient servir à tout le moins de desiderata pour la construction d’une théorie de la vérité partielle. A formalism is introduced to represent the connective organization of an evolving neuronal network and the effects of environment on this organization by stabilization or degeneration of labile synapses associated with functioning. Learning, or the acquisition of an associative property, is related to a characteristic variability of the connective organization: the interaction of the environment with the genetic program is printed as a particular pattern of such organization through neuronal functioning. Transhuman, or trans-human, is the concept of an intermediary form between human and posthuman. In other words, a transhuman is a being that resembles a human in most respects but who has powers and abilities beyond those of standard humans. These abilities might include improved intelligence, awareness, strength, or durability. Transhumans sometimes appear in science-fiction as cyborgs or genetically-enhanced humans. This book will look into the question "Can machines think?" followed by "Can humans extend their lifespan and keep up with (...) machines?" This paper argues for a largely unnoted distinction between relational and modal components in the lexical semantics of verbs. Wehypothesize that many verbs encode two kinds of semantic information:a relationship among participants in a situation and a subset ofcircumstances or time indices at which this relationship isevaluated. The latter we term sublexical modality.We show that linking regularities between semantic arguments andsyntactic functions provide corroborating evidence in favor of thissemantic distinction, noting cases in which the semantic groundingof linking through participant-role properties (...) apparently fails. Thissemantic grounding can be preserved, however, once we abstractaway from sublexical modality in lexical semantic representations.Semantically-based linking constraints are insensitive to the sublexicalmodality component of lexical entries and depend only on informationin a predicator's situational core. It is commonly assumed across the language sciences that some semantic participant information is lexically encoded in the representation of verbs and some is not. In this paper, we propose that semantic obligatoriness and verb class specificity are criteria which influence whether semantic information is lexically encoded. We present a comprehensive survey of the English verbal lexicon, a sentence continuation study, and an on-line sentence processing study which confirm that both factors play a role in the lexical encoding of participant (...) information. Certains chercheurs occidentaux et musulmans remettent en question la légitimité du mouridisme, cette tradition islamique lancée par Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba au Sénégal au tournant du xixe siècle. Par la théorie de la réception développée par Robert Jauss pour la littérature, le présent article formule l’hypothèse que le mouridisme en tant que réception de l’islam en Afrique noire est aussi valable que toute autre tradition islamique qui s’est développée depuis la mort du prophète Muhammad en 632 de notre ère. Grâce au (...) charisme et au génie d’Ahmadou Bamba, l’islam est devenu la religion populaire qu’il était appelé à être parmi les populations noires d’Afrique. Se basant sur le potentiel idéologique de l’islam, A. Bamba a réalisé l’émancipation culturelle, religieuse, politique et économique du peuple wolof et, par extension, de tous les Sénégalais, qui sont fiers de sa contribution à la lutte pour l’indépendance de leur pays. La richesse de l’enseignement et de l’action de Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba est encore à découvrir par quiconque est intéressé par la recherche des moyens pour développer le continent africain. Some Western academics and Muslim scholars often question Mouridism, this Islamic tradition initiated by Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba in Senegal at the turn of the 19th century. Through the theory of reception developed by Robert Jauss for literature, this paper argues that Mouridism as a reception of Islam in Black Africa is as true as other Islamic traditions that developed after the death of Prophet Muhammad in 632 c.e. Thanks to Ahmadou Bamba’s charisma and genius, Islam became a popular religion that it was called to be among Black Africans as well. Using the ideological potential of this religion, Ahmadou Bamba brought about the cultural, religious, political and economic emancipation of Wolof people and by extension of all Senegalese that are proud of his contribution to the struggle for the independence of their country. The wealth of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba’s teaching and action is still to be unfolded to Africans and all those interested in seeking ways to develop the African continent. (shrink)

Partisan fougueux du positivisme logique, il n'est pas étonnant que Zakî Najîb Mahmûd annonce la mort de la métaphysique traditionnelle qui se sert des concepts vides de sens. Concepts qui s'appliquent à un domaine qui ne tombe pas sous le contrôle des sens. S'il compare la métaphysique à la superstition, c'est parce que le métaphysicien se contente d'élaborer idéellement un système qu'il estime chargé d'une représentation fidèle au monde sensible. A telle enseigne qu'il s'y renferme tout en omettant les enseignements (...) fournis par la réalité sensible. Cette attitude critique vis-à-vis de la métaphysique ne l'a pas empêché de retourner au patrimoine arabe qu'il étudie dans toute son ampleur tout en dégageant les caractéristiques de l'identité arabe. Laquelle concilie l'intuition et la raison, ainsi que les valeurs et la science. (shrink)

La rondelle d'argile HT Wc 3024, trouvée fortuitement en surface en 1987, semble bien démontrer la validité d'une hypothèse proposée deux ans avant sa découverte : le nombre d'empreintes de sceau sur le pourtour d'une rondelle indique le nombre d'objets impliqués dans la transaction dont cette rondelle porte témoignage (dans le cas présent, aux six empreintes de sceau correspond le chiffre six qui suit l'idéogramme de la brebis).
