The aims of this paper are threefold. The first aim is to provide a critique of the reform proposal of the Harvard School of Public Health for Hong Kong's health care system through privatization of the public sector services. The second aim is to argue for the duty of society to guarantee every member equal access to a basic level of health care based on the values of equity, care and free choice. The third aim is to explore some suggestions (...) about delivery structures and financial arrangements of a dual sector health care system which will better enable society to provide a basic level of health care that is sustainable and affordable, while being at the same time consistent with the values of care, equity and free choice. In this book, Koo discusses political change in the view of Confucian thought. This study focuses on the Book of Change, which is one of the nine basic books of Confucius School; it has dominated oriental thought in this field for more than three thousand years. The aim of this study is to analyze and arrange its theory of change, and to apply it to political reality. Therefore, this book analyzes and summarizes the theories of change and applies those theories (...) to political change. From that process, the theories of political changes are developed. Die Kritik der Urteilskraft legt zum ersten Mal die philosophische Bedeutung des Geschmacks im Rahmen des Kritizismus dar. Es handelt sich um eine kritische Lösung für ein Problem, das Kant über zwei Jahrzehnten beschäftigt und ihn in Verlegenheit gebracht hatte. In der Schwierigkeit, die menschliche Fähigkeit zur ästhetischen Beurteilung des Schönen und das subjektive Gefühl der Reflexion philosophisch zu erklären, verbarg sich ein umfangreicheres Problem. Denn das ästhetische Problem stellte exemplarisch die Schwierigkeit dar, die Rationalität des sinnlichen Individuums auf Grundlage (...) der modernen Metaphysik und Erkenntnistheorie aufzustellen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung rekonstruiert die Entwicklung des ästhetischen Projekts Kants von 1770 bis 1790 vor dem Hintergrund dieser Problematik, mit dem Ziel, die Rolle der Kritik des ästhetischen Geschmacksurteils im System der Vernunft zu erörtern und die historische Bedeutung dieser Theorie im Kontext der Leibniz-Wolffschen Schulphilosophie zu beleuchten. I argue that emotions are not only rational in-themselves, strictly speaking, but they are also instrumentally rational, epistemically rational, and evaluatively rational. I begin with a discussion of what it means for emotions to be rational or irrational in-themselves, which includes the derivation of a criterion for the ontological rationality of emotions (CORe): For emotion or an emotion there exists some normative standard that is given by what emotion or an emotion is against which our emotional responses can be judged (...) or evaluated in virtue of the fact that our emotions manifest our rationality. I argue for the importance of clarifying the distinction between metaphysical, semantic, and meta-semantic concerns regarding what Emotion is. This allows us to see that those involved in the Scientific Emotion Project and the Folk Emotion Project are in fact involved in the same project – the Science of Emotion. It also helps us understand why questions regarding the natural kind status of Emotion, as well as answers to questions regarding the value of ordinary language emotion terms or concepts to (...) emotion research, will not help resolve the observed crisis in the Science of Emotion. Richard Nisbett's The Geography of Thought is one of several recent works that have highlighted purported differences in thinking patterns between East Asians and Westerners on the basis of empirical research. This has implications for teaching and for other issues such as cultural integration. Based on a framework consisting of three distinct notions of rationality, this paper argues that some of the differences alleged by Nisbett are either not real or exaggerated, and that his geography of thought fails to provide (...) an adequate account of thinking styles across cultures. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for teaching and learning critical thinking that can be drawn from the framework developed. (shrink)

Ante la desvalorización y rechazo de los partidos y la política en general, Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez reivindica a ésta en su sentido originario: como participación de los miembros de la comunidad en las decisiones sobre los asuntos que interesan a todos. La política así (...) entendida mantiene un nexo indisoluble con la ética, sin perder su autonomía, se encuentra con la política al perseguir ésta la realización de fines y valores con un contenido profundamente moral, y la política se carga de moral no sólo por el contenido de sus fines, sino al impregnar sus medios, la actividad práctica de sus sujetos y las motivaciones que los empujan. Sánchez Vázquez apuesta, así, por una moral que no se quede amurallada en la conciencia individual, y la llama a recuperar el lugar que le corresponde en el escenario propio de la política: la vida pública.
