It is argued that the disciplinary identity of anatomy and physiology before 1800 are unknown to us due to the subsequent creation, success and historiographical dominance of a different discipline-experimental physiology. The first of these two papers deals with the identity of physiology from its revival in the 1530s, and demonstrates that it was a theoretical, not an experimental, discipline, achieved with the mind and the pen, not the hand and the knife. The physiological work of Jean Fernel, Albrecht von (...) Haller and others is explored to prove this point. In conclusion this old physiological tradition is compared to the new experimental physiology, as practised by Francois Magendie and Pierre Flourens. (shrink)

Distributional fairness of corporate distributions is an important social issue linked to accounting for equality. Value added and the information contained in the value added statement can conceptually be regarded as a reflection of how the company is managed for all stakeholders. We investigate value added information published in sustainability reports to determine if the information provided is useful for assessing distributional fairness between stakeholders. We find that the value added information disclosed lack conciseness, comparability and understandability. The divergence is (...) considerable and the explanations of the disclosed information so limited that the usefulness of the value added disclosures must be questioned. Our results suggest several obfuscating techniques in the disclosure of value added information, including disclosing information that is conceptually compromised, resulting in comparability issues and disclosing information that can’t be verified by reconciling back to the financial statements. Our findings have clear ethical and moral implications as they stress the societal issue of distributional fairness. It seems that companies are either reluctant to provide value added information that is useful, or deliberately use value added disclosures to obfuscate. Information reflecting distributional fairness is therefore compromised. (shrink)

How different neural crest derivatives differentiate in distinct embryonic locations in the vertebrate embryo is an intriguing issue. Many attempts have been made to understand the underlying mechanism of specific pathway choices made by migrating neural crest cells. In this speculative review we suggest a new mechanism for the regulation of neural crest cell migration patterns in avian and mammalian embryos, based on recent progress in understanding the expression and activity of receptor tyrosine kinases during embryogenesis. Distinct subpopulations of crest‐derived (...) cells express specific receptor tyrosine kinases while residing in a migration staging area. We postulate that the differential expression of receptor tyrosine kinases by specific subpopulations of neural crest cells allows them to respond to localized growth factor ligand activity in the embryo. Thus, the migration pathway taken by neural crest subpopulations is determined by their receptor tyrosine kinase response to the differential localization of their cognate ligand. (shrink)

The coronavirus disease pandemic fundamentally disrupted humans’ social life and behavior. Public health measures may have inadvertently impacted how people care for each other. This study investigated prosocial behavior, its association well-being, and predictors of prosocial behavior during the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and sought to understand whether region-specific differences exist. Participants from eight regions clustering multiple countries around the world responded to a cross-sectional online-survey investigating the psychological consequences of the first upsurge of lockdowns in spring 2020. Prosocial behavior (...) was reported to occur frequently. Multiple regression analyses showed that prosocial behavior was associated with better well-being consistently across regions. With regard to predictors of prosocial behavior, high levels of perceived social support were most strongly associated with prosocial behavior, followed by high levels of perceived stress, positive affect and psychological flexibility. Sociodemographic and psychosocial predictors of prosocial behavior were similar across regions. (shrink)

The paper attempts to give an outline of the main doctrines of the Brentano-School and to mark the place of Bergman's contributions to descriptive Psychology. The idea of an immanent object is rejected by Marty and Bergman and was critized by Bergman in the framework of the 'concept-intuition'-distinction. It is shown that Bergman's critic leads to an interesting defense of the thesis of the privacy of mental contents.

Wittgenstein, possibly the most influential philosopher of the twentieth century, is often labelled a Neopositivist, a New-Kantian, even a Sceptic. Questions on Wittgenstein , first published in 1988, presents a selection of nine essays investigating a matter of vital philosophical importance: Wittgenstein’s relationship to his Austrian predecessors and peers. The intention throughout is to determine the precise contours of Wittgenstein’s own thought by situating it within its formative context. Although it remains of particular interest to Anglo-Saxon philosophers, special familiarity with (...) Austrian philosophy is required to appreciate the subtle and profound influence which this cultural and philosophical setting had on Wittgenstein’s intellectual development. Professor Haller has spent his career exploring these themes, and is one of the foremost authorities on both Wittgenstein and contemporary Austrian philosophy. Die Grundlagen der Erfahrung können auf zwei Arten "begründet" werden, entweder durch Rechtfertigung einer Begründungskette, deren Anfangs- und Endglieder nicht-abgeleitete Urteüe sind, also fundamentalistisch oder antifundamentalistisch, z.B. durch Kohärenz der Urteile. Der dezisionistische Standpunkt Neuraths verschiebt allerdings nur die Begründung und hebt sie nicht auf.

In Garvers Aufsatz soll gezeigt werden, daß in den Philosophischen Untersuchungen der Begriff der Lebensform dem Begriff der gemeinsamen menschlichen Handlungsweise synonym ist. Demgegenüber verteidigt die vorliegenden kritische Betrachtung Wittgensteins Auffassung, nämlich die Möglichkeit der Vielfalt möglicher Lebensformen. Auch wenn man gegen eine Inflation von Lebensformen polemisiert, braucht man nicht zu behaupten, es gebe nur eine menschliche Lebensform. Das ist falsch. Einige historische Hinweise dienen der weiteren Aufklärung der Bedeutung des Ausdrucks "Lebensformen".

Vermutlich durch Stumpf und eigene Mitarbeiter wie Mally angeregt, wählt Meinong erstmals 1909 Wissenschaftstheorie zum Thema einer Vorlesung (die Typoskriptunterlage dieses Kollegs ist im Ergänzungsband zur Gesamtausgabe wiedergegeben). Den Hauptteil der so dargelegten Theorie nimmt die Klärung der Begriffe der beiden Arten von Wissenschaften ein, die es überhaupt geben kann: Daseinsfreie und Wirklichkeits- oder Daseinswissenschaften. Alle Wissenschaften, mit Ausnahme der daseinsfreien Gegenstandstheorie, sind auf vollständige Gegenstände gerichtet, beziehen sich auf sie. Das Gebiet des Wirklichen wird erfüllt von physischen und psychischen (...) Gegenständen. Es gibt aber das Gebiet der heimatlosen Gegenstände, die von keiner „beglaubigten Wissenschaft aufgenommen sind". Diese fallen in das Gebiet der Gegenstandstheorie, während sie in den etablierten Wissenschaften nur als Erfassungsmittel von Wirklichem involviert sind. Daseinsfreie Wissenschaften sind nach dem Prinzip der Unabhängigkeit des Soseins vom Sein (Mally 1903) Soseins Wissenschaften. Entscheidend ist angesichts der neuen Aufgabe der Wiederentdeckung unmöglicher und unvollständiger Gegenstände die daseinsfreie Betrachtungsweise der Gegenstandstheorie in bezug auf alle Arten von Gegenständen. Idealisierungen sind ein Mittel zur Begriffsbildung, etwa um ungenaue und vage Begriffe zu präzisieren. Idealisierungen sind auch ein Mittel zur Vereinfachung der Darstellung komplexer und komplizierter Sachverhalte. Sind wissenschaftliche Theorien desgleichen bloße Idealisierungen? Und, wenn dies zutreffen sollte, Idealisierungen wessen? Diese Fragen führen sogleich zu den Problemen fiktiver Begriffe und an den Rand metaphysisch belasteter Probleme. Die Untersuchung dieser Fragen erfolgt in einer Auseinandersetzung mit St.Körners Auffassung von der Natur der Idealisierungen.

We discuss gauge transformations in QED coupled to a charged spinor field, and examine whether we can gauge-transform the entire formulation of the theory from one gauge to another, so that not only the gauge and spinor fields, but also the forms of the operator-valued Hamiltonians are transformed. The discussion includes the covariant gauge, in which the gauge condition and Gauss's law are not primary constraints on operator-valued quantities; it also includes the Coulomb gauge, and the spatial axial gauge, in (...) which the constraints are imposed on operator-valued fields by applying the Dirac-Bergmann procedure. We show how to transform the covariant, Coulomb, and spatial axial gauges to what we call “common form,” in which all particle excitation modes have identical properties. We also show that, once that common form has been reached, QED in different gauges has a common time-evolution operator that defines time-translation for states that represent systems of electrons and photons. By combining gauge transformations with changes of representation from standard to common form, the entire apparatus of a gauge theory can be transformed from one gauge to another. (shrink)

Wittgenstein's attitude toward philosophy and philosophical problems is examined with the result that - in spite of his own strong criticism of his earlier work - the aim of philosophy remains the same throughout his life: clarity for its own sake. Wittgenstein's concept of philosophy is sketched as non-naturalistic and anti-systematic with the recommendation of being unbiased as the only remedy for falling again into the old traps. The criticism of the Russell-Frege view of existential quantification and generalization included in (...) the "Big Typescript" is outlined as well as the position toward verification Wittgenstein maintained in between his beginning to work in philosophy anew and his first attempt of systematizing the results in the "Big Typescript". Ausgehend vom Gegensatz ^absolut-relativ' wird im ersten Abschnitt sprachliche Relativität versus Absolutheit anhand von P. Ungers Analyse semantischer Relativität und der Unterscheidung invariantischer und kontextualer Analyse behandelt. Im zweiten Abschnitt wird das Relativismusproblem in bezug auf psychologische (und soziologische) Relativität diskutiert und in der Gruppe der ersteren Wittgenstein, Kripke und Putnam erwähnt und deren Argumente über die Unmöglichkeit privater innerer Gegenstände zur Widerlegung subjektiver Relativität herangezogen. Sodann wird gezeigt, daß das analoge Argument zugunsten eines Relativismus auf soziokulturellem Gebiet auftritt. Rahmenrelativität (...) scheint demnach unvermeidbar. Ein Absolutheitsanspruch des Relativismus selbst bleibt unerfüllbar. (shrink)
